The 2011 NHL All Star Super Skills Competition Chat Station
The NHL All Star Super Skills Competition will take place tonight at 7 PM EST on VERSUS and TSN. Patrik Elias will be inthe accuracy competition and(update: apparently not) the new skills challenge relay. Talk about the whole competition in the comments to this post.

I really like the visuals on the ice – highlights on the empty end of the rink, the giant sheet showing the whole player, it’s a good way to highlight who is who.

I wonder....
…. if they offered a million dollars (cash, tax-free) to the winner of this event if we’d see the sick shoot-out moves.
Maybe someone like Ovechkin wouldn’t care, considering the guy makes $9 million/season and has all the endorsements. Don’t you think some of the guys on rookie contracts who are marginal All-Stars would go all out for a chance at the big payday they might not ever otherwise see?
I agree with the Ovechkin part, but I think its safe to say everyone here will make a lot of money. I would expect the rookies to be more conservative though, without a doubt.
I just want some sort of incentive so this competition isn’t a snooze-fest. I know these goalies are good…. but half the shooters looked like they didn’t give a darn. It’s one thing for the ASG itself to be a joke, because it has been for years and years. It’s quite another for this to be one.
Find some sort of reward for the winning shooter that means something. I don’t care if it’s cash, a snazzy car, a half-dozen lingerie models, points in the standings (well, maybe not)…. just something to encourage them to show off their skills for the fans.
But everyone’s showed their skills so far? Tonight there was a new hardest shot record, all kinds of things attempted in the shootout showcase, Daniel Sedin going 8 for 9 in accuracy, goalies in a fastest skater competition, and an elimination shootout.

This is the fans’ weekend. We know the ASG doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot, but that it’s here to showcase the best players and entertain the fans. So make the players be entertaining. Pull out the fun stuff, the exciting stuff. Half the players in that shoot-out competition seemed to me like they didn’t give a rat’s rear end about it, which is why (IMO) you saw a bunch of slap shots, dekes with little shooting, etc.
Well, that’s you. I didn’t get that sense. The final shootout had no slapshots and attempted dekes for shots.
