Arnott and Brodeur with disturbing quotes, more trades coming sooner rather than later?
There's more to this than I thought, so I figured I'd go with a fan post over a fan shot.
Now, as we know, there were many reasons to trade Jamie Langenbrunner. He wasn't happy here, he wanted to win elsewhere, he needed the change of scenery, the Devils need to get younger and get something back for him before he left as a UFA in July. Personally, I am not happy with the return. There were reports from some reliable sources suggesting that packages of a single prospect and 4th or 5th round pick were available, and if you can get a sure thing now, you do it. Anyway, something is better than nothing, and that's what ended up happening.
I am aware, as any rational person would be (that is not meant to offend anyone) that you trade your UFA-to-be's away for a return when you're losing and looking ahead. It's a simple economic trend that almost always applies to professional sports. If you have a player you're likely going to lose, and you're not prepared to make a serious playoff run, you get something back for him. I am fine with the Langenbrunner trade in that regard, and now other general managers know that Lou has given up on this season and that we are open for business.
With that said, I am a little concerned with comments made by Jason Arnott today. Have a look:
“I’m being serious,” Arnott said.
Being on a team that almost certainly won’t make the playoffs is something new for Arnott, like most of the other Devils’ players. He made it clear he’d like to have a chance to help another team win.
“I’ve never been in this situation before,” he said. “I didn’t really want to be in this situation. I came here to try and win and be in the playoffs. So, it’s a little unfamliar territory for myself. It’s not a great feeling, but it’s the business of the game and, of course, I’d love to play in the playoffs and help another team win, but we’ll see what happens.”
Well, think of it this way, Nashville is fourth in the Western Conference as I type this, New Jersey is 30th in the league. It's safe to say Arnott wouldn't mind being in Nashville right now, but again, I could be wrong. I'm sure Arnott will be moved, and the return may mirror Langenbrunner's deal, I can't imagine anything drastically different.
Then there's Martin Brodeur. I still am not sure I completely understand what he means when he says:
If the organization did make it clear that it wanted to tear the whole team down and start over from scratch next season, then, Brodeur said, he would prefer to move elsewhere.
“Definitely,” Brodeur said. “No question because you want to play, you want to have success. You want to have at least another chance to win another championship.”
And Brodeur believes that will be possible with the Devils in 2011-12.
What's possible with the 2011-12 Devils? A blowup? Does Brodeur look at himself and think that once the Devils lose him, they have to rebuild? Lou said today that he is not rebuilding (see Versus article). Lou never rebuilds. He's never really had to rebuild completely. My question is, why did Brodeur say what he did? This is different from his previous comments where he stated he would be moved IF Lou Lamoriello felt he needed to be moved.
It all comes down to Zach Parise. He's a very powerful person right now, and his loyalty will be tested dramatically over the next few months. The Devils' short-term fate rests in Parise's decision. If Parise stays with the Devils for a reasonable contract, the Devils will have fewer holes to fill and can realistically look at making the playoffs before Patrik Elias' contract comes off the books after 2012-13, and that might be his final deal, who knows. I believe Elias is done with the Devils after one season after his current deal ends. If Parise does not re-sign, the rebuilding process becomes a much longer one.
Look, I've said it before and it remains true, NHL teams need good goaltending, not great goaltending to win now. They need clutch saves at certain points of a hockey game, but it doesn't matter if you have Niemi or Miller in net. Think of the good teams this season: Pittsburgh, Philly, Tampa, Washington, Dallas, even the Canucks to an extent, they have good goaltending for the most part, but none of them, not even Luongo is elite right this moment.
So it all depends on how Lou Lamoriello handles his first real rebuild. Lou might just deal Langenbrunner, Arnott, Hedberg and Greene, the free agents. Maybe he deals Mair too. Or maybe he tries to get significantly younger and moves Bryce Salvador, Clarkson, White, maybe he can get rid of Rolston somehow, Zubrus, and maybe he trades Brodeur. I personally doubt Lou is going to blow this team up. That is unlike Lou no matter how bad things get. Hopefully, the Devils can add defensemen and maybe even a decent center to this team in all of this, and young players at that. Hopefully the Devils can go into this draft in 2011 knowing who to draft: Couturier or Larsson, because one of them will fill the Devils' top need. Right now, there are holes on the roster and it would take more than one draft pick to fix them. This might be Lou Lamoriello's biggest test as a general manager.

I just blockquoted Arnott’s quote on John’s post. I too think it may be an unofficial trade demand. What is so disturbing about it? He’s going to be a UFA, and it’s also likely he won’t return next year. Why not trade him for something in return? At least try and get a 2nd rounder for him.
As for Marty, I don’t think it’s going to happening. When Rolston was going through his waiver/re entry process, there was talks of trading him. Lou said he wouldn’t do it. Marty said he wants to be here. A blow up would be a rebuilding, and like you said Lou doesn’t believe in it. He also mentioned the rebuilding in the audio file I attached in my Langenbrunner post.
For the Devils, it’s not rebuilding; It’s a changing of the guard. A new core is emerging. Marty believes the team can content next year. Lou is getting that team ready for next year right now. In the audio file, Lou mentions that players need to be signed for next year. I can’t help but think Parise was on his mind. Here’s the file.

Brodeur has been so loyal to the Devils (negotiating contracts without an agent and purposely taking less money to help the team) I just can’t see him ever leaving. If the Devils are for some reason still this despicably bad one year from now (about halfway through next season) then MAYBE Brodeur will want to be traded for both himself and to help the Devils. I think Marty understands how lucky he’s been for most of his career, that the Devils have been able to put a competitive team out on the ice pretty much every season since he’s been in the league.
Arnott wanting to be traded is no surprise. He hasn’t been that great this year (though he was the best the Devils had for a while), but I think that has to do with the team around him. He could be better somewhere else, and the Devils would be better off getting something for him before his contract ends.
I guess it’s not disturbing as much as it is sad. Arnott truly genuinly wanted to play here, and now he wants out for all practical purposes.

dont forget if we dont get first pick in the lottery we will at least get larsson 2nd or Ryan Nugent Hopkins 3rd. It sucks because the draft doesnt seem to be to strong this year and this year happens to be the first year the devils will have a low pick. As for Couturier, he really didnt impress me at the world juniors, not producing much, then again he was on the fourth line for Canada. Nugent hopkins seems intriguing and kind of looks like a matt duchene, as for larsson some people compare him to a young niklas lidstrom? who knows but the projected top three dont seem to strong this year wich dissapoints me.
Where’s the source for the quotes?

No, you didn’t specify. You wrote a whole separate post where you quoted someone else’s work without giving them credit.

Still unacceptable. Link to the posts by Gulitti where you copied and pasted his quotes.
All other people reading this: Quoting someone else’s work online without linking to where you found it is tantamount to plagiarism. Don’t do this.

Moving Brodeur could be the best move for the future
There are teams in the playoff race that can use a veteran goaltender with a very successful history. These are teams that have young talent in other positions. Right now Brodeur hasnt had a great season but that blame has a lot to do with the people in front of him. Problem is he doesnt have much time left until he is just a serviceable goalie, he is close to the end of his career he cant be great forever and you have to admit that. He still has a good value and can offer a nice return from a team in need of a goaltender to complete there team for the playoffs.
Some problems with the team I see trying to rebuild is that they cannot try and rebuild around Brodeur he doesnt have enough time yet. There is also no young backup that is even close to ready to take the reigns as the starter and Hedberg is not the long term answer either. Moving Brodeur will guarantee a #1 pick from this years draft even if the Devils #1 is taken by the nhl, also it would include some good young talent for him.
For this team to rebuild they have to think about the long term of their goalie core, right now it is very old and wont be remaining for very long. If the Devils can move their most valuable asset for goaltenders for a good young prospect goalie a good pick and maybe some extra picks or prospects it would be the best move for the future. Hedberg can be left to the starting role for this tanking season and in the rebuild as a young goalie grows to take over the spot. This will also free up a good amount of cap space for resigning Parise and the other 11 spots that are up for resigning or filling for next season.
Brodeur is desirable with a little bit of contract time left and if a team has a decent defense then he will start having a much better season then he is. Hedberg has a much smaller cap hit and can maintain the starting position on this flop of a season while a kid is developed to take over that spot in a rebuilt franchise.
Arnott is just a rental and wont net a very big return especially with his price a third or fourth round pick to a team looking for a playoff birth is not a very high chance of a nhl player being spawned from it
Elias is the only other player of value that can be moved but he isnt really slumping bad and can be a veteran retained to lead the way for a rebuilt team but the rebuild has to start with the defense and the goaltending there is still talented guys remaining on the front that can be revitalized.
When did honesty become disturbing?
There were reports from some reliable sources suggesting that packages of a single prospect and 4th or 5th round pick were available, and if you can get a sure thing now, you do it.
A prospect is not a “sure thing.”
Wanted: a 2nd goal

I would take a second round pick over a prospect and a lower pick any day.
Perfect examples would be Shea Weber – 53rd overall and another example is Merril. He has been a great pick in my eyes and so far is looking to be a great pick.

Don’t go expecting Merrill to be the next savior. He’s good, don’t get me wrong, he impressed me at the WJC, but he’s still young and has a lot of maturing left to do. He’s not a sure thing until he makes it to the NHL, and we’ll see how he develops. He’s a guy you want to keep your eye on.

All picks can be questionable best odds are for a first rounder though. A good prospect is another story if a teams staff is atleast decent at tracking a prospects development they can make a pretty good assumption on who will be an impact player. Its never a sure thing but prospects give you a better idea of an NHL caliber player then picks especially lower round picks

From HNIC "Satellite Hot Stove"
I’m about to do something here that breaks one of John’s rules, but I don’t have a link to cite at the moment. Pierre LeBrun’s commentary/rumor mill part of the “Hot Stove” won’t be posted to his ESPN blog until sometime tomorrow, but he did mention a few things about the trade market and a couple of Devils. To recap:
- Jason Arnott will waive his NMC and accept a trade out of town. LeBrun expects Arnott may be the next guy off the island, and perhaps in the not-too-distant future.
- Los Angeles has expressed interest in Patrick Elias, but Elias will not waive his NMC for the Kings… or, for that matter, anyone else. Elias will not be traded.
- Florida is attempting to extend Tomas Vokoun before they open the trade market on him. I know, he’s not a Devil…. but his availability (or lack thereof) might impact the goaltending market. If he’s not there, it might become easier to move Johan Hedberg.
John, I apologize for not having a link, but one won’t exist unless someone taped the segment and posts it to YouTube or somesuch. LeBrun’s blog on ESPN’s hockey page is usually pretty good about updating his comments during “Hot Stove” sometime on Sunday, but I don’t know when. Once I find it, I’ll post again here with a link.
You cited something (HNIC). People (including myself) have cited other information from MSG’s pre and post game shows so I don’t think he’ll have a problem.
As for Arnott, I’m not surprised. Get rid of some payroll, get something (anything) in return for him, and give some younger guys more time. There are centers like Josefson and Henrique that could really benefit here.

That’s fine for TV – it’s really a big problem when a link exists (and was clearly used via C&P) and there’s no link to attribute it to in the post.

I read Brodie’s quote in the original context as to meaning that he believes the 11-12 team capable of competing for the championship, not a blow-up occuring. He would have wanted to get out if the Devs had said that there was a rebuild coming, and hasn’t Lou already put the poo-poo on that concept aside from clearing UFAs to get picks for the draft?
Did I read that wrong? Just sounded like the optimist that he has always been.
