Devils Scoring Chance Summary for Game 1 and Game 2
Welcome to the first scoring chance post of the year. Before I get into anything I want to suggest checking out my intro to scoring chances post right here. It should help you in understanding everything that you will see below. Also I should note that I am kind of stingy when it comes to chances. I used a pretty hard line when it came to the scoring area, so even if a shot was slightly out I still didn't count it.
Despite losing in their first game of the year the Devils actually did a pretty good job of limiting the Flyers scoring chances. They led 9-6 in chances after two periods but then fell apart in the third getting out chanced 6-0. Ilya Kovalchuk had a poor night going -4 at even strength and also giving up 2 chances while on the PP. Adam Larsson led the way for the defensemen going +3 at even strength and Petr Sykora managed to finish the night at +5.
Patrik Elias led the team with 3 scoring chances but only managed to get one on net. Zach Parise had 2 chances on net and Kovalchuk led the team with 2 chance assists. Continue after the jump for all the tables and graphs.

This is the head to head chart for the game. This shows the even strength head to head comparisons for each player. It shows how the Elias' line was pretty successful against basically the whole Flyer lineup, while the Zubrus' line was pretty horrible. Boxes without a number means that that player didn't have chance for or against, boxes with a zero means that they ended up even.

The Devils 2nd game was very similar chance wise after 2 periods compared to game 1. They were tied with Carolina with 8 chances apiece heading into the 3rd but this time the Devils had a strong 3rd, out chancing the Hurricanes 4-1. Ilya Kovalchuk made up for his lackluster opening night leading the forwards with a +3 at even strength. He also led the team in chances and chances on goal. The Elias line was a little less successful this game only managing 1 ES chance but it resulted in the Devils first goal of the year.
Larsson had another good game leading the defensmen with a +3 and had 2 chance assists. Mark Fayne also had a strong night with a +3 and got a chance on goal.

Here’s my take on the PHI-NJD game.
We got fairly similar chances, I tend to be more generous than other recorders. By the end of the game I was surprised the Devils actually managed to keep it that close because they sure seemed like they were being dominated throughout the game.

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome – Did I mention this is awesome?
Being used to Corsi – I have to understand this is a way of measuring the quality of one’s possession. As you said in your first post:
Corsi approximates puck possession; if you have a high Corsi that means you are attempting more shots than your opponent, which means you have the puck more often and in an attacking position. Scoring chances measure how well a player is utilizing that puck possession and if they are getting off quality shots.
By the way, I hope those Corsi scripts are up soon so we can combine both stats.
In terms of the first game, the Devils seem to take advantage of the very little possession they had. That’s probably the only positive out of that game. I was worried about how Salvador and Volchenkov would fair – that pairing seems to be shutting everything down minus that one gaffe in the first game. Nice job

It was a scoring chance assist for Tallinder. Sykora had the miss from him.

Ok I see there, from rebound… but to me Tallinder’s shot was a real SC though….

Take it up with C. J. haha.
He did say he was stingy with giving chances. The Flyers link from Todd has Tallinder with one with 4:41 left in the 1st.

Yeah it only goes to the highlights anyway.
I’m generous, CJ is stingy. It’ll all work out at the end as long as we’re consistent.

I remember now. Tallinder was ever so slightly behind the circle. It was close though. Almost exactly where Larose scored from today, which I didn’t count either.
It is you the boss ;)

i was curious whether you would count larose’s goal as a scoring chance – i thought it was inside the circles, but it was close. whatever the case, the ‘canes really didn’t generate much at even strength.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
I was wondering that as well. Is there anyway C.J. can take into account movement when counting scoring chances? For example, on that play, Larose was skating at high speed, making it much more difficult for the goaltender to get set and try and stop the shot. There’s a big difference between a shot taken from that spot at high speed like Larose did and a shot taken from the same spot with the shooter stationary. Just some food for thought.
Excellent work CJ
I’m not at all surprised to see that Ruutu-Jokinen-Stewart got rolled upon by, well, all of the Devils today. They were real nonfactors on the ice. The Kovalchuk-Josefson-Palmieri line really enjoyed their time against Pitkanen too.
On a more negative note, the power play has to do better than 5 chances over two games. Especially when the other team in both games gets a combined 8 on their PPs (6 by Carolina alone!).

i think scoring chances might miss the boat on the NJ power play overall, but we’ll see

they’re running an umbrella – i don’t know how many shots they’ll end up generating below the circles.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
I don’t think that means the Devils are counting on point shots or shots from the wall to go in. They should still be trying to get shots from the area.

no, but i do think they are counting on kovalchuk shots going in from there + tips, screens, rebounds on other point shots. i guess that doesn’t make it that much different from other power plays, though.

I think these stats will shed some light on which players are actually worth their salaries, and what leads to wins. I bet at the end of the season we will see a very high correlation between scoring chances and wins.
Just a little feedback:
Maybe include a stat on how often we convert our scoring chances, that way we can see from game to game whether we are steady in converting our scoring chances.

I’ve been tracking chances for the Canes and my data agrees with yours for the most part. Carolina had an abysmal third period and it cost us big time. The Kovalchuk line destroyed our second line (who failed to generate one chance for at even strength) so that really killed us too.
Here’s my data if you want to compare.

We had almost identical totals but a few different chances. It seems you were less generous with misses and I was less generous with the high slot shots.

I generally only count missed shots if they come from the slot.
