10/17/2011 New Jersey Devils Prospect Update: Keith Kinkaid, Blake Pietila, Jon Merrill & More
As the college, junior and AHL schedules are in full season mode, which give us a lot of statistics to update and other items to discuss. After the jump I highlight some of the action from the past week, and talk about Keith Kinkaid's call-up, Jon Merrill's soap opera of a suspension, Reid Boucher's goal scoring and more!
Albany suffered through another tough weekend, dropping two of three games to start the season at 1-4. The only notable occurrence of the past week was what looks like Keith Kinkaid's ascension to the '1A' role in Albany. Martin Brodeur's shoulder injury necessitated a call up and it was Kinkaid who was summoned to Nashville to backup Johan Hedberg on Saturday night, not Jeff Frazee. Perhaps Kinkaid was called up just because Frazee was scheduled to start Saturday anyway. But after Frazee was torched for six goals on Saturday night against the Worcester Sharks, Kinkaid seems like he has quickly leapfrogged Frazee on the organization's goaltending depth chart. Kinkaid is only two years younger than Frazee, so the fact that he is a technically a 'rookie' won't stop the organization from fast tracking his development. With a long gap in the schedule, and the need to insert the likes of Eric Boulton and Cam Janssen into the lineup, the Devils sent forward Adam Henrique down to Albany to get some playing time as opposed to sitting in the press box.
Earlier in the week defensemen Joe Sova and Harry Young were assigned to Kalamazoo of the ECHL in order for them to get some playing time. I was surprised a bit by the assignments. Young is someone who will drop the gloves and provide some toughness which Albany currently lacks. Sova, who played in a few games last year after leaving college early to sign with the Devils, did have some developing to do in the AHL, but didn't seem to need any time in the ECHL. That said, with Matt Corrrente, Matt Taormina, Jay Leach and Peter Harrold all occupying the Albany blue-line there was little opportunity for him to play right now. Injuries will likely bring him back to Albany sooner rather than later.
2011 4th round pick Reid Boucher is lighting up the OHL with 10 goals (two hat tricks). Before we all get ahead of ourselves it's important to note that he plays on a really good team and with his age and experience you shouldn't be surprised at his performance. I am still not sold on the OHL being the best development path for Boucher (we knew he had a great shot, that wasn't a question) and hope the Devils get him some time in the AHL this year and next to help push his progress along.
It was a full slate of NCAA games this weekend and one player who stood out to me was 2011 5th round draft pick Blake Pietila. The Michigan Tech freshman didn't add any goals to his stat line this week, but he has put up 20 shots in his four games, a really good total for a true freshman in the WCHA. He has helped set-up a few goals for his teammates and the scouting report on him by Kirk Luedeke that he' brings a very high compete level and outstanding overall feel for the game', seems to be holding true.
Jon Merrill continues to sit out for the Michigan Wolverines while he serves his twelve game suspension. Over the past week, some ominous quotes from Red Bersenson about Merrill came up via Michael Spaeth from TheWolverine.com:
Sophomore defenseman Jon Merrill is eligible to return to practice this week after he was suspended for a violation of team rules Sept. 24. However, it doesn't sound like he will rejoin the team anytime soon.
"There is a point in the policy where he's allowed anytime after the first two weeks and right now we're debating that," said Berenson.
A 2010 second-round selection of the New Jersey Devils, Merrill was an all-conference second-team selection in 2011 after contributing seven goals and 18 assists with a plus/minus of plus-11.
As his suspension drags on, his potential as a flight risk escalates, but Berenson will not bow to that pressure just to reinstate him.
"I don't worry about it but it's part of the situation," he said. "Any time a kid is suspended or hurt or even benched, he can quit or if he's good enough he can leave and play junior hockey or sign a pro contract.
"Is that a possibility? Yeah. Do I think it will happen? No. But Jon is in a situation he has to get out of.
"We're talking about doing what's best for the kid and what's best for the program. Sometimes they go hand-in-hand and sometimes they don't."
Adding more fuel to the fire about a potential departure to the OHL's Plymouth Whalers was a tweet over the weekend by BlueChipBulletin.com editor Thomas Wharry here that stated that Merrill was in attendance at a Plymouth game over the weekend.
It sounds more and more like Merrill may not return to the Wolverines. If he does jump ship I will predict that Lou Lamoriello promptly trades him for $0.35 cents on the dollar.
Thanks for reading and sound off below on Merrill, Pietila or anything else prospect related.

I hope Lou doesn’t trade Merrill. Trading him when his value is this low seems like a bad idea.

seems like? it definitely is. trading merrill would be a horrendous idea. if he jumps ship, so be it – it’s his decision to do so.

This is only my opinion, but if he jumped ship to OHL I would move him. If you quit on your team and school after you were dumb enough to get suspended (when you knew you already had a microscope on you) that’s not speaking volumes about your character. A character that was already in question.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
I don’t like that Burlon has played in only 1 game. Stupid Peter Harrold is wasting a spot on that team.
Burlon should be at Michigan. I don’t think the Devils wanted to sign him, but he left early and so they did. He’s not much of a prospect.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
I disagree. I think he could be a solid back-end NHL defenseman, and he’s a decent passer, too. I think his game will be strong in the NHL someday. I’m not calling him the next Niedermayer, and rightfully so because he’s not, but he is a solid player.

do you have any evidence at all for these assertions?
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
Do you have any evidence at all for your assertions Triumph? The scouting report on Burlon projected him as a 3rd pairing, potentially 2nd pairing defenseman. This is reiterated by the fact that he was taken as a 2nd round pick by the Devils. He was fairly successful at Michigan and continued to make steady progress. A few games into the AHL season and you are already declaring him “Not much of a prospect.” He’s only 21 years old, and has yet to complete a single AHL season. Injuries will occur on both the AHL and NHL team giving Burlon games at the AHL level and a chance to gain valuable experience.
Give him a little time before claiming he’s “not much of a prospect.”

Yes, there’s a decent chance that Burlon can be a 2nd or 3rd pairing player – I’m not writing off his NHL career; I should have been clearer. There is a tendency for people to go on HF reports and hope when it comes to prospects – see also comments around here in 2010 that penciled Tyler Eckford into the Devils’ top 8 D. DownGoesAvery’s post reads like it was ripped straight from an HF prospect report.
But let’s get a few things straight:
A: The 3rd pairing ‘regular’ is much rarer than people think. A young defenseman on the third pairing either gets shuffled off to another team, or promoted to the top 4. There’s not many players who’ve gotten 16-17 minutes for the same team for many years. Nor is this player particularly valuable or irreplaceable.
B: Where Burlon was drafted doesn’t have that much import anymore, that was 3 years ago – what matters a lot more is how he’s done since then, and I don’t think anyone’s been too blown away with his college career.
It’s nice that Burlon is adding some depth to the system, but he’s already behind 3 players drafted after him, depth chart wise – that also is not a good sign. He can easily overcome that, however (see also: Mark Fayne).
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
Completely agree. I think bringing Harrold in was a stupid idea. There’s too many defensemen in the system. The Devils could add an NHL-caliber center for some of them.

I wonder what that means? I hope Lou doesn’t trade him. He’s talented and young. Give him some time to mature. He wouldn’t be in NJ for several years anyway, there is time to let it play out.
I just hope Jon gets on the straight and narrow.
You can’t just give up on the guy. He shined at the World Jrs, he’s got a lot of talent at both ends.

A Question About Merrill
Jon Merrill was widely reported to have fallen to the Devils in the 2nd round two years ago due to character concerns. Based on his stellar performance last year, as well as his disappointing suspension, where do you think he would go if that draft was held again today?
I really don’t know how much weight GMs give to character, so I’m curious what others think.
by TheTrapezoidConspiracy on Oct 17, 2011 2:02 PM EDT reply actions
I know he wasn’t in the first round of a re-draft by TSN, but I don’t put much stock in that. Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus has Merrill ranked as the 9th overall defensive prospect going into this season, but again that doesnt count for any potential character concerns.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
If you ask me, character is a top of list. Hockey is the perfect definition of team sport because it’s such a rough discipline. Players live together for months. It’s all about indivual commitments for the sake of a group. And for example, we all know what a team cancer could do in a locker-room.
I don’t mean Jon is team cancer since I know nothing about this story, but that could be a real problem for Lou, eventually.

totally unnecessary sarcasm. merrill’s character should be judged insofar as it may cause problems in his hockey career or to his hockey team. we don’t even know what he did to get this suspension. but we do know that his previous indiscretions had nothing at all to do with hockey.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
we don’t even know what he did to get this suspension
We don’t. But we do know that what ever it was, was pretty damn stupid to have Michigan suspend him for 12 games AND not allow him back to practice yet.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
He probably got caught drinking a beer or smoking a J. I find it incredibly frustrating that they won’t say what he was suspended for which leads me to believe that it not only wasn’t hockey related, but something we probably all would agree might just be a teen being a teen.
If it was really bad and not hockey related, like a sexual assault or theft, his punishment would have been way more severe.
I think if it was something like that there wouldn’t have been any penalty. To me, it’s now an issue of him not being able to come back to practice after being eligible. That’s more than ‘teen being a teen’ situation I would think.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
Oh sure there would have been a penalty for an athlete an scholarship with so many eyes on him. Michigan isn’t a a small Liberal Arts college who might simply issue a stern wag of the finger for something like that.
Other possible scenero I see is either plagiarism or cheating on the academic side.
Cmon, if Michigan was suspending athletes for 20% of their season for drinking there wouldn’t be many active scholar-athletes.
I hope it is something like getting caught drinking, but again I think he would have been able to make amends and re-join practice by now if it was.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
Well, this is kind of like the Mike Richards/ Jeff Carter thing with the Flyers, and they got traded.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
The difference is Paul Holmgren’s an idiot and traded them because he wanted to sign an overrated goalie who’s never won anything on his own instead of just paying $2 mil to Tomas Vokoun.

Except the Flyers are undefeated in regulation so far and have at least got somewhat of decent returns.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
Trading Merrill for 0.35 cents on the dollar would be an absolute waste, and it is something that will not happen.
If he is moved at all it would be at the trading deadline if the Devils feel they are in a position to win. That is, if they feel like moving him at all.
I am still skeptical about his “character problems.” He is not an NBA or NFL player that is constantly seen at a club throwing money in the air, shooting himself in the leg, bringing a gun into the locker room, assaulting people, drunk driving, etc.
Yes, Lou does not tolerate any type of poor behavior off the ice, however the Devils would have passed on Merrill if they believed his character problems would eventually become a distraction to the team.
Both of Merrill’s “incidents” might as well be labeled as “confidential” because only vague details have come out about what it is he has done.
Merrill is currently an important prospect for this franchise. If he stays within the Devils organization it will most likely be 2-3 seasons before he is given a legitimate opportunity to make the NHL lineup. By that point Larsson will be 21, Tedenby 24, Josefson 23, Kovalchuk 31, Zajac 29, and hopefully Parise will still be on the team at the age of 30. Adding Merrill to that current group will give the Devils an outstanding core. It would also give the Devils two talented defensemen on two separate pairings, something that has not been seen since Stevens and Niedermayer were on the team together.
The organization knows the potential and talent of Jon Merrill. They would not have drafted him if they did not believe his character flaws were simply an issue of maturity. I am waiting for more information about the incident, and within the month I would assume Merrill’s next path will be mapped out. Whether that is in Plymouth or with Michigan remains to be seen.

merrill
i realize that there are privacy issues here both for the player and for michigan that prevent things from being discussed openly but unless and until we know exactly what happened and why berenson does not appear anxious to have the player rejoin the team all of this is unfair speculation and i think we should all adopt a ‘wait and see’ attitude and be patient

I did some detective work, and found Merrill’s facebook page. I don’t think it’s his personal page, mind you, rather a fan page or whatever:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jon-Merrill/173481866012140
(I don’t know how to post a fancy word-link thing)
The most recent post includes: “There is a distinct possibility that the suspension could be related to underaged drinking.”
Somewhat facetiously, I think this is a huge relief here if it turns out to be the case. No, I don’t advocate underage drinking blah blah Lord knows I did not, but I’m not an NHL prospect and I get the responsibility and everything. But it could’ve been much, much worse, like another “hazing” incident or whatever. It’s kinda stupid to say hopefully it’s drinking, but relating to his career this is probably the least he could’ve done to get the suspension.
Also, I could swear somewhere along the line I heard that Jonathan Toews got caught once in an underage-drinking situation and was disciplined a little by UND after he was drafted by Chicago. Could be wrong on this, no evidence here, but anyone else remember something like it?
With all due respect, if there’s no evidence, I don’t think it’s fair to speculate.

Scott Gomez drank under the age of 21…..and it was out of the Cup
The speculation so far is probably around what he did. Alcohol (maybe having it in his room or being belligerent around campus), grades, academic integrity. I don’t think it was drugs or sexual assault – becuase then the authorities would have gotten involved or he would have been suspended from school. He’s still enrolled in the school and going to class (hopefully).
I understand the kid is still a kid and everyone makes mistakes. So he had a beer. So he didn’t do good in his classes (the term student-athlete is becoming a joke in some cases if you ask me but that’s for another time and blog(s)). Maybe he was on double secret probation with the team and it’s a combination of things?
I’m kind of glad the coach is being kind of hard on him. It will straighten him out and it may be good for him. But if he wants to play hockey, then let him. If he leaves to play in juniors – so what? Things change and it may be good for him. He committed to UM at 14 – maybe it’s not what he wants 7 years after he made a crucial decision in his life.

Merrill getting traded? I doubt it.
I really, really, really would be surprised if Merrill is traded because of whatever happened that nobody really actually knows outside of Merrill, Red, and Michigan Hockey’s staff or even if he jumps to the OHL.
Yes, this organization is Lou’s way or the highway. Yet, there have been a few recent prospects with character issues that didn’t automatically see them jettisoned from the organization.
The most infamous one would be Mike Jefferson, who just about made the NHL team in 2000, played 2 games, and refused to report to Albany leading to his suspension (and provided one hell of a quote in the process). The prolonged beef lasted into 2001-02 during which he legally changed his name to Mike Danton. He apparently got another chance in 2002’s camp and made the team again in 2002-03 and played 17 games. Another refusal to report was the last straw and so was eventually traded to St. Louis. This 2008 article at NBC Sports is a good summation of his sordid saga.
Then there’s 2006 first round draft pick Matthew Corrente. In 2006-07, he and four other members of Saginaw were suspended for “breaking team rules.” On top of that, he had trouble keeping his temper at times and racked up dumb PIM in his development. Yet, he remained in the system – and still is in the organization, even though I doubt he’ll be a full-time NJ Devil at this point.
Let’s not forget Patrice Cormier. OK, he wasn’t necessarily a bad character as he was the captain of Canada’s WJC team. However, he also had his moments of recklessness, worst of all wrecking Mikael Tam’s face with his elbow. The Devils stuck with Cormier and only traded him to Atlanta upon the Thrashers’ request in the Kovalchuk trade.
Lastly, 2011 draft pick Reid Boucher of the USHL didn’t stick with his NCAA committment and joined the Sarnia Sting for this year. If the Devils didn’t mind that, then they’re not going to mind Merrill jumping.
Basically, if a player has some potential talent and is being punished by their team or league, then the Devils aren’t going to cut ties with the prospect. Character issues alone aren’t going to be the reason that Lou moves a prospect – and certainly not one who has played as well as Merill has done in the NCAA. I think he remains in the system whether he stays at Michigan or goes to the OHL.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The New Jersey Devils SBN Blog
Corrente’s ‘breaking of team rules’ was much more severe, I believe it involved sexual assault allegations that couldn’t be proven.
Whatever the case with Merrill is, players of all stripes have fought against their worse natures with varying results. Chris Pronger got dealt from Hartford in part because of character issues – that deal really didn’t work out very well for Hartford.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
Also, Jamieson Oleksiak (Dallas’ 1st round pick) left Northeast after playing a year there to play with Saginaw.

Since we’re all speculating here, I’d guess that there was a minor incident (drinking makes sense), but that Merrill’s response to it was poor. Team rules are typically that the student-players have to abide by a code of conduct, and are responsible for not doing so. If Merrill’s reaction to being caught was disrespectful or something similar, then this suspension makes sense. That it’s dragging out like this tells me that the coach still isn’t satisfied with Merrill’s attitude.
I doubt that Lou is giving this as much attention as we are, to be honest. I agree with the thought that a trade is unlikely, and would be a mistake at this point.
Sorry if it is a dumb question but how are you defining prospect?
I see that alot of the AHL players are not on here. So for example Corrente. Is he either no longer a prospect or is there a concrete basis used – e.g. he has played NHL games.
Also, I happen to notice you are not including all the players that The Hockey News identifies as “being in the system”. Why is that?

I typically use NHL rookie rules to follow/not follow a player. The only player I noticed I cut off when I put my excel sheet into the article was Frazee. Although with a 6.00 GAA and a .752 SV % you are not missing much.
Corrente/Zharkov also cleared through waivers another sign that they aren’t really a prospect.

Merrill should not be traded
Unless it is a similar scenario to Cormier where the other team asked for the player. It would be stupid trading Merrill at an all time low when you essentially have 4 cheap years to see how he matures. At the end of those 4 years it is quite possible that he has tremendous value on the trade market even if you want to move him.
Blake Pietila is a player I really have my eye on. I believe it’s known the under 18 development program hands minutes to their favorites so better players may be stuck down on the depth charts. Also it is very hard to determine how 17 year old speedy energy players will develop. Some turn into Ryan Callahan’s while others turn into nothing. 20 shots in 4 games shows he is willing to take the puck to the net, which causes goals.
