The 2011-2012 New Jersey Devils Supporters Section

If you recall from last year, you may remember a bunch of home games in the second half of the season with ticket offers to sit in a section, stand all game, and scream your heart out for the New Jersey Devils. This was deemed the Supporters Section. Sort of like student sections at big time Division 1 colleges (like Rutgers or Syracuse - I did that for you John) or supporters clubs for soccer teams around the world - it's to create a positive atmosphere for the home team and wreak havoc for the visitors.  Almost a year ago, John had this idea for the Devils - in which it may enhance the game experience at Prudential Center. Only a couple months later, that idea became a reality, and on December 17th against Nashville, the supporters section was born.

A few more opportunities arose as the season went alone, and it became more and more popular - one game where the tickets were sold out in a mere few hours. The idea was a hit and it paid off. This year the supporters section will be around for even more game. How many you ask? All 41 home games.

I'm proud to say that not only am I season ticket holder for the first time in my life, but I am also apart of the inaugural supporters section. The seats were close to selling out when I bought them and that was over a month ago. It was a great deal - $1000 bucks for some very good seats. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.

The section held meetings, picked three captains where they work hand and hand with Devils management and marketing. We had a decent turnout for the three preseason games, figuring out chants, names, and logos. After the jump is a little more information on the section and a breakdown of what you will be hearing from section 122.

[UPDATE:  My Devils Season Ticket Representative gave me a call today to let me and all of you know that if you are interesting in getting season tickets in the supporters section, there are still a few seats available.]

Star-divide

First - I want to give you some video evidence of how much fun this it looks. Example 1; Example 2; Example 3; Example 4. These were from last season at February 4th against Florida.

Also, I know everyone int he section that I have talked too is a season ticket holder. If you want to go to a game here or there, people are finding it difficult to sit in the same section. I have read that people are getting tickets around section 122 and may just converge over and be apart of the crowd. I will try and get more info on that for you guys and gals are interested. Section 122 is in the corner behind the net where the Devils defend twice.

The Captains - Greg Kuhn, Mindy Drexel and Dennis Frazier. They were voted by their fellow peers and have done a great job so far. I've talked with them a few times and any information they get, they are willing to tell  me so I can let all of you guys know too. Greg sent out the welcome email and I want a share a blurb from that:

It’s important to remember what our job as Devil supporters is. We are there to support our team, and help breathe some life into an otherwise quiet hockey arena. Let’s not try to change the world of hockey , but to support our team, wreck the moral of the opposing team and gain the respect and admiration of 17,000 plus hockey fans, that hopefully will want to be like us and join the ranks. Don’t forget, hockey fans, not just Devil fans will see our efforts and maybe we can be the premiere example of a fan supporter section that will spread to other NHL teams.

I really took this in becuase of a number of reasons. We do want the respect of the rest of the Devils fanbase. We want the other fans in the arena to join in on our chants and screams and whatnot and make The Rock a difficult place to play in. Maybe it will the Devils perform and give them an extra boost in their play, and maybe it won't - but having 17,625 people on your side never hurts.

The Name - The group will not be called the Devils Supporters Section. The captains and the group have brainstormed a number of ideas and we have come up with one. I can't tell you, becuase it will be released during Opening Night. I will tell you it's a pretty sick name. I will though tell you after the game. Once the name is released, there will be a public facebook group in which I ask you to join. I'm going to bring up getting a twitter account for the section as well.

The Rules - Yes there are rules: From the same email from Greg:

CODE OF CONDUCT

All section members must follow these rules:

-Wear red and/or be in Devils gear.
-Remain standing for all three periods and be ready to chant the whole game.
-Take part in all chants with the section.
-Be LOUD in your support of your Devils!
-NO leaving the game early!
-DO NOT sell your tickets to fans who are not willing to abide by the above rules.
-DO NOT sell your tickets to fans of the opposing team.

Pretty straight forward if you ask  me. The last one would be stupid to do. Why would a fan of the visiting team want to sit around a bunch of standing Devils fans? A dumb one, that's who.

The Logo - A logo for the section will also be reveled on Opening Night. There has been some issues between the group and the Devils but that will happen when things start fresh. I've got a sneak peak of it and it's really nice. I can't wait until it's on a t-shirt.

The Chants - This isn't the be all end all list. More chants will probably be created but like i said, we only had three games to try out the things we had. There are specific times that we would like to do things as well. Here they are -

Start of game:  "Let's Go Devils" (clap-clap-clap,clap,clap)

When play resumes after 10:00 minute mark of every period: Baumann's Chant (you know Baumann). He's been doing the spell out of Devils ever since I was a fan. It's simple: "Give me a D; Give me a E, Give me a V...etc" Then to a "Let's Go Devils" This is tradition here, it must stay alive.

3:40 mark of every period: A 10 second countdown...

3:30 mark of every period: Constant noise and cheering for 30 seconds. This is new and it's awesome. It represents three Stanley Cups and 30 years of Devils hockey (1981-82 to 2011-12). The 30 can stand for Marty as well.

Start of the 2nd and 3rd period: "I Believe That We Will Win!" It starts with the first word and progressively gets longer. We will do that if the team is down to start those periods. If the Devils are up or tied - "Let's Go Devils"

Last minute of game: Constant noise of cheering whether winning or losing (if the Devils are down one goal I assume).

During penalty kill:  "Defense!" (clap-clap), "Clear That Puck"  "Kill" (horn/clap) "Kill" (horn/clap)..etc..

Opposing team penalty call:  "You Can't Do That" (clap-clap-clap,clap,clap)

Powerplay:  "Pass, Shoot, Score" (clap)

After Devils Goal and Song: [Chant Player Name] (clap-clap-clap,clap,clap)

Other:

"Go Devs Go"

"Here We Go Devils, Here We Go!" (clap-clap)

Whistle Melody- "Rangers Suck"

The list will probably change, and I will keep you updated when that happens. If you have any ideas, let us know in the comments. Your opinions on these also matter - the section wants feedback and what works and what doesn't.

So fellow Devils fans - what do you think of the Rock having a section like this for all 41 games? Will it work like last year? Will it get watered down? What are some things you want to see from us? The better criticism we get will only make the group better. Thanks for reading.

Good luck in keeping that enthusiasm up for all 41 games ladies and gentlemen! We are behind you (and maybe we can sub in from time to time)!

Awesome idea. Glad to see it come to fruition.

This is great. I did get season tickets this year, but not in the supporter’s section. I thought about it, but I’m the quiet type during a game (unless the Devils score).

I can’t wait to see this group in action for every game. It was awesome the few times that it was done last year, and I think this is going to grow into something big!

by dasru on Oct 5, 2011 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Gonna be a good year.

Looking forward to this season, and 122 is going to have a great time no matter how it turns out. Good article, I think you pretty much covered everything. Let’s just hope our enthusiasm is contagious and brings more energy to an arena not really known for it.

This is somewhat relevant .. and I figure this is a decent forum to ask this question.

In regards to:

Wear red and/or be in Devils gear.

What’s the plan for “Opening Night White”?

I’m trying to decide whether I should just wear my red Brodeur jersey, and wave the free shirt around, or wear my old blank white jersey (which is too small for me now).

by dasru on Oct 5, 2011 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know. I’m not happy with the White Out. I don’t think many are actually. It’s dumb…the Flyers will be in white on Saturday. White t-shirts are cheaper than red ones. I’m be sporting my Home Away Devils Jersey.

Well, I suppose it’s a good chance for the supporters section to show how organized they are.

For instance, are they all willing to wear the white to play along? Or are they just gonna wear red and say to hell with the rules.

Both are attractive choices.

by Alan Wright on Oct 7, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

The captains are talking to the Devils about that issue. We don’t to come off as stubborn or hypocritical and be different than the rest of the arena yet at the same time we want them to join in chants and noise. But at the same time, this is opening night for our section too, where the name and logo is to be revealed – so in a way the Devils want us to stand out.

Gotcha.

Well at this point I’ll just have to defer to you and the captains. I’m not a ticket holder, but I’m enthusiastic about the supporters section and I hope it spreads to the nearby sections within the next two seasons. After that, it will inevitably cascade to the entire upper tier.

Is there a way for non-supporters section fans to submit chant suggestions?

Submit them here in the comments. I’ll bring them up to the captains and other people about it and we’ll try them out at some games. The more chants, the better. And the more people know about them, the louder they can be at the Rock!

Great post Matt! I’m so happy to be a part of the supporter section. I’m tired of having a quiet arena for the best team in the NHL. I’m one of the captains and my main job is to organize the facebook/twitter. We have pages set up for both, but cannot launch them until opening night when the name and logo are revealed.

Judging on our three preseason games, I’m incredibly happy/surprised by how well it has turned out. In just three preseason games, we have a standard chant order down and have had people come into our section as far as section 12 and the goal bar just to be a part of the “fun” section. There is no doubt that we will have a blast at every game and I hope it spreads through the entire arena.

In regards to the opening night white, I also dislike this idea. I will be wearing my Red jersey since I doubt the free white shirt will fit me (i’m 6’7’’).

Non supporters will be able to submit suggestions once the public facebook page is launched after the opening game. That will be the best place to reach us. It is slightly difficult to understand chants through text so maybe a quick video on facebook or youtube to explain exactly how it’s said would be awesome.

by Dfraz on Oct 5, 2011 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

I didn’t but these seats even though I planned to. There isn’t a way of getting single game tickets for these seats once in a while, like if a member can’t make it? I’d like to know that, but yeah, the supporters section is great, I was there for the Tampa game last year in the section, and us fans felt like we had something to do with the come back win that game. (Also was the first win of the incredible run of the second half)

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

by KovyisLove on Oct 5, 2011 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

As Dfraz said – once the public facebook group and twitter account get going after everything is released, you can probably contact them through those and see what happens. If I can’t make it to a game, I’ll be sure to let people know through that if I can’t sell it personally.

i’m really excited that this has come together this year. i thought the fact that they were only letting season ticket holders into the section would really screw things up, but i’ve heard the section during the penalty kill in preseason. hopefully it goes well during the season.

as far as i know single game tickets are NOT available right now. This is to avoid opposing fans from sitting in the section. We’ve already had issues with rangers fans. I assume partial plans may be available. But the supporter section is only from row 8 back. so there may be single tickets available in rows 1-7. Also check ticket exchange because someone may sell their tickets for a game.

Couple of ideas

86 the Rangers Suck, you’re a Devils Supporters group, not haters (unless they are the opponent that night)

I see tix in your Section available for sale on StubHub, find out who’s tix they are and have a talk with them.

Pass-shoot-score seems distracting to the Devils while on the PP?

Who about heckling the opposing goalie?

while i agee that being a hater is lame, supporting the devils includes supporting their hatred of their hated rivals. even if this section does do the cheer, someone else in the arena will.

by poopydoodie11 on Oct 5, 2011 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with the sentiment of not doing the “Rangers suck” cheer, but I’ve never been to a Devils game where someone didn’t start it. It may as well come from the supporters section.

Funny story. I remember going to a Philly game at the old Continental Airlines arena, being outside smoking, and all the Devils and Philly fans bonding over a good ole Rangers suck chant. It was probably the only time I’ve enjoyed being around Philly fans…

by SonicJoe on Oct 5, 2011 7:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah I agree about the Rangers suck chant, it seems bitter, why not just (whatever team were playing) sucks? Also seeing how we were skipped over to play the rangers in a winter classic its going to be hard for people to see the devils as the main rival for the rangers now.

matt im so glad theyre doing the countdown cheer. when i saw this post i was gonna email you the idea for that, but then i actually read it and saw that youre going to be doing it. the nordiques fans did it last year at the last game and it was so nuts. i really hope it catches on, ill pass it on to the people in my sections :)

by poopydoodie11 on Oct 5, 2011 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

They need to somehow label this section on ticketmaster.

I am not a member of the group but I am a supporter. I feel though that when buying tickets it needs to be specified what to expect when sitting in this section now that ticketmaster allows you to select your actually individual seat, row, and section. I am sure that there are a lot of people who would not want to be sitting near these people, specifically below row 8 of this section and in order to enhance their experience at the game they should be warned of what to expect.

This would also help make it possible to allow those of us who want to be a part of the section for a game but are not season ticket holders to do so.

by youngdog86 on Oct 5, 2011 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

The countdown from the nordiques game last year was awesome. And the ‘30 seconds of insanity’ is great too. I really hope this catches on. I’m going to do my best to get it going up in 212

Please can we do something like this? Their fans will straight up belt out the song for the entire game after their boys score. Maybe we can change the “reds” to “devs”? If we can get our 17000 to belt “oh when the devs go marching in” for half the game it would make the rock a tough place to play.

Absolutely love the “Glory to the Devils.” It’s a really easy melody to go along with and it is something that will really resonate in the arena if people start belting it out.

I’m always jealous of teams that have songs to sing after goals and what not. Perhaps as a rugger, I’m predisposed to drunkenly singing things at/after sporting events.

Such an awesome idea guys.

I’ve been to a couple NY Red Bulls games and their supporters section is crazy, the Empire Supporters Club or something like that. Surprised it is yet to catch on in other sports, but I’m glad the Devils are innovating. Please keep me in mind if anyone who has the season tickets cannot make a game, I would gladly (and proudly) stand in their place.

I think this has the potential to be something great

Hopefully those leading the chants onward are brave enough to keep going regardless if the Devils are winning, tied, or losing. A proper supporter is still supporting when the team is up 3-0 as they are when down 0-3.

As a general bit of advice, supporters sections tend to “borrow” what other supporters do in other leagues and such. I would encourage those in this Devils supporter section to check out a Red Bulls game and see what the South Ward does or check out other places where groups propagate. Learn how they’re organized, what they chant, and recognize what’s good and discount what’s bad.

“Hopefully those leading the chants onward are brave enough to keep going regardless if the Devils are winning, tied, or losing.”

We are. Being heckled by Rangers fans when we were down a goal at the preseason game we ultimately lost didn’t break our stride at all. If we can keep it going while losing to the Rags of all teams, I think we should do alright.

Also, we have discussed checking out what Red Bull fans do, and while we will borrow and adapt some of their ideas, we also want to establish this group’s own unique identity and not borrow TOO heavily from other similar groups. In other words, we’re already on it!

Suck chants

I may be in the minority, but I think (along with every family member or friend I’ve taken to a game) the suck chants should get tossed (maybe aside from the Ranger chant when we are actually playing them). I understand it has become tradition but anything can become a tradition and any tradition can change. I’ve been a fan since 87-88 so please don’t doubt my enthusiasm for the team, but the suck chants come across as ignorant and is a bad model for the kids. I’m sure we can come up with better kick-ass chants than those. Just my opinion, attack me if you will, you can look me up on twitter with the same username as well. Let’s Go Devils!!!!!!!!!

Yeah...

I’ve personally felt the same way, but that’s not something that would be easy to change. Give it time though, and who knows? If everyone starts brainstorming and comes up with something better, maybe we can run with it and see what happens. I’m not really expecting something as set in stone as the “you suck” chant vanishing unless the goal song changes.

as a college hockey fan

1. I hate bringing up Cornell here (but they are such our college analog even if I hate admitting that) but they do something similar to the name chant thing on goals that is pretty awesome (and that I know some soccer teams do as well.) Example:
Announcer: New Jersey Devil’s goal, his 7th of the season, scored by number 9, Zach Parise
Fans: Parise!
Announcer: Assisted by #26, Patrik Elias
Fans: Elias!
Announcer: And #15 Petr Sykora
Fans: Sykora!
Announcer: That’s Parise his 7th from Elias and Sykora at 8:15 of the second period
Fans: Second Period!

2. Also for after a goal chanting “sieve!” or “it’s all your fault” or some combination thereof is a classic (I’ve tried doing it at Devils games but alas with only my family in on it, it never caught on). Just youtube it’s all your fault sieve on Youtube and see which the best one is (I have my own personal favorite but it’s not on Youtube and I’d prefer less cowbells at Devils games).
Heckling the opposing goaltender the start of the periods when he’s down your end is also good and of course praising Marty when he’s down your end to start.
Depending on Rock/Devils policy, hanging a banner that says sieve on one side and goalie on the other and switching depending on who is in net (Marty=goalie, other guy=sieve) is a college staple.
My school, when the hava nagila is played by a band or the pa, sings while pointing at the correct goaltenders “sieve sieve, sieve goalie sieve sieve,” etc. Not sure if that ever gets brought out at the Rock but it can always be a capella if that isn’t a stupid idea (I’m never convinced that something solely my school’s band does is a good idea)
Just never do the BC goal chant – it takes 3 days and the opposing team usually scores in the middle of it (have actually seen this at least twice and it’s never not funny). It’s the Frankenstein’s monster of every other goal chant in the history of forever.

3. To bring back Cornell (aaugh!): they only do this once, as the teams are coming out for the 3rd period, but it looks so cool and it’s not like we don’t use this song already so maybe for when this is played at the Rock? (You might start to figure out my bias with this video).

4. I Believe That We Will Win is Awesome. We did it down 17 once at a basketball game and almost came back. It’s also great to pull out as a rally is close but not quite there yet. That’s the only reason I’m hesitant on doing it 2x a game when losing at a set time. Sometimes you just need to do it when it feels right: winning or losing- I busted it out after an interception in our home opening football game and lost my voice as a result but it caught on and we did, in fact, win. Utah State does it better than my school though- but please, no ripping off your shirt. Speaking of Utah State, another college basketball/hockey classic: Winning Team/Losing Team.

I’ve been in a hockey press box the last two going on three years unable to do these types of things (only games I get to go to are women’s hockey games anymore and it’s just weird being that guy) so I’m super excited (if you couldn’t tell) for this idea and hope to get to a few games when I can near/in the supporter’s section. KUTGW!

PS- If anyone ever needs a quick history of the fan traditions of ECAC hockey (or to a lesser extent, Hockey East or other college hockey) then I’m your guy.

Agreed on I Believe That We Will Win

1 Min Left

This might go against the people that want to get rid of the suck chant (but hey, college hockey fans are bruttal), but at Clarkson U we had a neat one toward the end of the first period. It went something like this:
Announcer: There’s 1 minute left in the 1st period.
Fans: Oooooooooooookaaaaaaaaaay, and SLU still sucks!

SLU = St. Lawrence University for those that don’t know. We would do it for whatever team we were playing, not just our hated rivals.

Don’t know if this would work though as the crowd is going to be going nuts at the 3:30 mark.

The Winning Team/Losing Team

chant that Utah State does is nothing short of epic. If there is one chant to add to the arsenal soon, it’s that one. If the whole arena began to pick up on it, it would be like nothing else. Of course, it would need to be reserved for the Devils being up at least 2 with probably no more than 45 or 30 seconds left. Giving up a tying goal with the extra attacker would deflate that a bit.

Whistle suck chant

There was a time and a place for “you suck” chants, and that time has passed. Especially because the “Rangers suck” part has grown into something gross, sexual, and homophobic about the Flyers. It’s stupid and it needs to end. The Devils are a respectable, professional franchise and their fans should be professionals as well.

As to the supporters section, I think it’s great: I wish I could afford season tickets, but I can’t. So, maybe next year.

ALSO: I encourage EVERY hockey fan and ESPECIALLY season ticket holders to use their tickets and the tickets of other season ticket holders to grow the fanbase. There is nothing like live hockey and a live crowd to interest someone in the game and in this team. So, do try to spread the love around and bring some new people into Satan’s flock.

by Alan Wright on Oct 6, 2011 7:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Clarification.

Admittedly, the “you suck” chant after a goal is fun and people like it, though it doesn’t make sense. These guys are professionals. They don’t suck. The Devils score because THEY are good, not because the opposing goalie sucks. When the Devils score on Tim Thomas or Patrick Roy, is it because he sucked? No. When people score on Marty, is it because he sucked? No.

I especially don’t like the whistle I guess. Replacing the rock-and-roll you-suck chant would require the Arena not to play the song and thousands of people not to say it.

I just don’t like negative cheers, booing (except for booing blatantly bad falls or truly dangerous penalties), and so forth.

by Alan Wright on Oct 6, 2011 7:36 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree completely

although I am guilty of joining in on the Rangers Suck thing. My bigger issue is the Flyers part of it, and I never join in on that. I don’t think anyone in the Supporter Section really did either when we played them last week. It’s immature and tasteless, and goes against the image of respect and class that I feel the franchise itself reflects around the league. To an extent, the Rangers Suck chant does to, but not nearly as much as the Flyers part. It just goes too far, especially in an arena where a lot of people bring their families and children. Five and six year old kids don’t need to hear that.

I’m all for trying to get rid of the "Rangers suck "and “You suck” chants, but I have no idea how, or even if, that would possibly work since the people that dislike them are in the vast minority.

There is no need to do any "suck" chants ever

Except in rare occassions spur of the moment, Ex: end of a game vs the Rags where the Devils are up a few goals and some Rags players try something dirty on the ice.

The Rangers Suck, Flyers *%$$^( chant is an embarrassment and needs to stop right now.
It actually decreases our attendance and hurts our beloved franchise as I know parents who will not take their kids to games because of that chant specifically and other profanities.

Lets take this one step at a time

Regardless of what myself or anyone else thinks about it, the “Hey You Suck” goal score chant is one of the few moments in the game when most of the crowd gets up and yells and supports the team. Is it my favorite? No, its not my favorite. But my reasons are not because its “offensive”. Cmon guys lets be honest, “suck” stopped being a bad word when you get to be about 6 or 7 years old.. And unless your children are 3 years old, they hear many worse words than “suck” at school from their friends every day, I can guarantee you that. Personally, I wish we had a slightly cooler goal song. But, it is what it is. My point is, I think the purpose here is to grow the fan culture and raise the noise level in the stadium. The way we will do this RIGHT NOW is NOT by changing one of the few loud moments of cheering we have every game (the goal score chant). Also, I ont believe anyone here has the power/ influence AT THIS TIME to change something like that anyway. Lets first get the stadium rocking for 60 minutes – yelling, singing , cheering. Maybe some of you who have a problem with the goal score chant can take my approach – make it your goal right now to bring the noise and the positive cheeers to your section and make it AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE. I don’t mean to sound like I’m speaking for or on behalf of the supporters group or anything like that, because I am certainly not. I am just a diehard fan who wants to help spread the energy and noise this great group is creating to my section of the arena as best I can, for the purpose of creating a loud , fun , environment.

Cmon guys lets be honest, "suck" stopped being a bad word when you get to be about 6 or 7 years old..

There’s nothing wrong with the word, but there is with the usage. As mentioned above, it’s not even a true statement most of the times it’s used. Beyond that, a hockey game shouldn’t have to also be a teaching moment to explain to a child what fellatio is.

And unless your children are 3 years old, they hear many worse words than "suck" at school from their friends every day.

That’s not a proper excuse. They probably also hear all manner of unsavory language in movies, in music and in video games. In all of these cases those parents that are concerned with such things limit their child’s exposure. In this case that would mean keeping them from attending Devils games, and it’s tragic that there are parents who can’t share their love of the Devils and of hockey in general, as well as foster the growth of future fans, because a handful of uncreative people prefer to uselessly taunt another team than show some basic respect.

by elesias on Oct 6, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Also:

I disagree. Based on what I’ve read and the people I’ve talked to, it’s continued because it’s expected and most people go along with simply it because others are doing it. Basic mob mentality.

The way to curb it is precisely with this group making a deliberate effort to not use it, and preferably, to alter it. This group already has the respect of the rest of the fans for its organization, enthusiasm and atmospheric contributions. With that comes an inherent ability to lead as the casual fans and those not sitting in the Supporter sections follow their lead to be a part of it.

by elesias on Oct 6, 2011 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Disagree. No one here right now has the influence to change the Devils goal scoring song. Maybe next year, who knows. As long as the song is played as is, the arena will shout “hey you suck” mob mentality or not

by JTdevs on Oct 6, 2011 10:32 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That’s the point. Mob mentality means that the mob—that is, the vast majority of attendees—follow what everyone else is doing. All it takes is someone(s) to change it and the “mob” will follow.

Agree on all your assessments!! I think or hope we ‘as a group’ are smart enough to come up with more positive chants. JTdevs, I don’t think waiting till next year or waiting until they change the goal song are valid excuses, or just the need for loud noise and fan support. The fans will support what the majority do at the game, and now is the time for change. I can’t believe that fans like you do not agree with how ignorant it sounds to chant ‘you suck’ when our Devils score or how tasteless it is. It’s just a bad image. And I’m not a ‘prude’ or anything, I’ve been a Marine, been on hockey teams, and my work has the same atmosphere; I don’t have any problem with crudeness in its proper environment, but I think ‘we fans’ should have higher standards, as does the organization!!

by seantuf10 on Oct 6, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

hey Sean, your right — I do think the most important thing to address right now is to fill up the vast amount of “quiet time” that exists at all of our games. That is my personal belief. Obviously others, (yourself, elesias included) disagree.. My personal belief is still that if this group should focus on successfully integrating new positive chants into the “quiet time” during the games. If this is done successfully, the group will gain influence among the casual fans and followers, and change of deeper rooted traditions will be more easily achieved. To walk in on day one and say “hey everyone, this is how things are gonna be done from now on” , is an approach that I think will be more poorly received. Let the arena see what this group can do. Let the arena take up a few of the new chants and become more enamored with the energy level and atmosphere the group brings. Then , when you reach that point —THEN you go ahead and implement the changes of the more deeply entrenched traditions , i.e. the “you suck” chant, and do so with greater success.

by JTdevs on Oct 6, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

All it takes is a couple of fans to start a chant

Fans can be loud in any section.
Also, more fans need to pay attention to the game, oohs and aahs effect.

by Real Big Devils Fan on Oct 6, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

They don’t have to be mutually exclusive, nor does anyone have to attempt a totalitarian “thou shalt not chant!” rule.

If a large group of people institute a new chant over the old one, there’s a good chance it might catch on and the old one will be largely abandoned. Simple as that.

by elesias on Oct 6, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I still maintain that even within the context ‘you suck’ , it is not that offensive. I guess what is ‘offensive’ and what is not is a subjective and personal scale. To me its not, to others it is. Whether you want to limit your childrens exposure to that word is your personal choice, just like the the movies and tv shows you allow your children to watch. My larger and more important point is , like it or not, the chant is not going anywhere right now, but if we all as fans do what we can to focus our energies on increasing the support and noise level throughout the arena with more positive cheers and noise, maybe this can be addressed in the future.

by JTdevs on Oct 6, 2011 10:30 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

It isn’t about offensiveness, necessarily. It’s about there being a right time and place for the inevitable questions from a child, and a hockey game not being the preferable choice, nor should it be.

My larger and more important point is , like it or not, the chant is not going anywhere right now

Which is my larger and more important point. It’s not going to change if it’s accepted because “hey, who am I to change it?”

by elesias on Oct 6, 2011 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s about there being a right time and place for the inevitable questions from a child, and a hockey game not being the preferable choice, nor should it be.

Absolutely , couldn’t agree more , and there is no reason to make it as such. Easily handled.

Kid: “Dad, what does ‘you suck’ mean?”
Dad: “It means they stink, son. It means they’re not good.”

On a side note, hockey games feature grown men punching each other in the face at times, not the best example for our children either, and surely something that would beg the question “Why are they hitting each other?”

It’s not going to change if it’s accepted because "hey, who am I to change it?"

That’s not entirely my attitude, although I can see how it could be perceived as such as I re-read my previous posts. If enough people feel this is doable and the group laid out plans to go forward with an alternative I felt was better, I would support it 100 % and take a leadership role in trying to get fans in my section to do the same.

Right now , Devils games pretty much involve about a total of 5 minutes of loud fan noise /cheering/ chanting and about 55 minutes of silence. I just thought it makes more sense to first focus on the other 55 minutes of silence. Once that is addressed, lets improve / tweak the other 5 minutes if necessary, and clearly there are arguments to do so.

by JTdevs on Oct 6, 2011 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

I completely agree with the ranger suck chat. I think it’s stupid. I actually typed up this list that was published in the article and I didn’t have that there so I don’t know at what stage it was added. No one in the supporter section has initiated that whistle.

I also think that the YOU SUCK in the song is dumb, but that will only change if the song itself changes which I think they should do anyway because that song is so overused across various NHL teams. I think at least 8-10 teams use that song. At least we added something to it, but I personally want the devils to be unique and have their own song.

Unfortunately these things are not going to change. People will keep doing it. I also found it pretty stupid how at the rangers game no one did it, but isles and flyers it was done.

Point is The supporters do not start that rangers suck whistle. Will some join in, probably, but our goal is to be a presence in the arena, but a classy one. Our rangers and Flyers fans are some of the worst around and we all know that. There was a big altercation with some rangers fans during a PRESEASON game because we were cheering while down by a goal. Point is, we know how these fans are. We’re better than that and the “suck” chants are more on their level of fandom and support.

by Dfraz on Oct 6, 2011 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

change the song, change the chant

I agree that it’s time to change the goal song/chant – and freely admit to being a “You Suck” yeller – it’s a reflex at this point. If the Devils change the song, and the Supporters take the lead in changing the chant I don’t see whay it couldn’t happen.
Love being in the Supporters section and agree – let’s keep it loud and classy, if that’s not a total oxymoron:-)

I hate the Rangers like any good Devils fan should

I don’t like their fans either and would not be friends with any of them, for real.

But I still think the Supporters Section should be Pro-Devils and not anti-anything.
If a Supporters member wants to join in with a Rangers Sucks chant that started in Section 215, go ahead, but don’t start the chants I would think.

I think the Devils should play off of their name.

And, therefore only play satanist metal songs about death, zombies, evil, demons, and so forth. Or just The Misfits and Danzig.

Seriously though, the Devils shouldn’t be playing any Disney songs or cheesy songs and chants about saints marching in. It’s hockey. It’s New Jersey. And we’re the Devils. We play tough, and the songs should be tough.

Scrap the chicken dance, the YMCA song, Cotton-eyed Joe and all those played-out arena songs we’ve been hearing for years.

Their name isn’t based on Satan, though. I am, however, on board with hearing some Danzig in the arena.

Scrap the chicken dance, the YMCA song, Cotton-eyed Joe and all those played-out arena songs we’ve been hearing for years.

I’d like to add Bon Jovi to that list, also. Just because he’s from NJ doesn’t mean people from NJ want to listen to him. If they’ve got to go with a local boy, the aforementioned Danzig is from Lodi.

by elesias on Oct 6, 2011 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s based of the New Jersey devil… technically from “Flyers territory” in the Pine Barrens. That said, the team has been identified with the devil more than with the New Jersey Devil. Personally, I think they should play off of that in some kind of way, and not just in cartoonish ways. I have my own ideas about that but that’s a story for another day.

After typing that comment, I couldn’t get any info about whether Danzig was a Devils fan. When he was coming up, if anything he’d be a Rangers fan.

Of course there are others, too!, Broooose, Danzig, Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons, Connie Francis, The Shirelles, Lou Monte, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, … tons of other NJ bands to choose from. Dillinger Escape Plan, Skid Row, E-Town Concrete, the Bouncing Souls, the Fugees… and let’s not forget Frank Sinatra and George Clinton!

Tons of hometown talent. Hell, Newark used to be a center for jazz in the Northeast. I’m not sure how to Jazz fits into a hockey game, but I’d rather hear that than listen to Slippery When Wet.

I’m not in marketing, but I can’t imagine that a campaign centered on the physical manifestation of evil to billions of people worldwide is the smartest move. It might do well with the angst-ridden teenager crowd on coolness factor alone, but let’s be honest, angsty teenagers are not the ones spending money on season tickets and merchandise.

by elesias on Oct 7, 2011 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it could have a wider appeal than you may think. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but I haven’t yet finished condensing my thoughts in a meaningful way to express them. So, I will continue to hold off.

But, for our purposes I will say that I think the Devils, as a franchise, should be darker and their music more intense and serious. I’m a happy person and I love Whitney Houston, David Bowie, Queen, The Beatles… whatever. But that stuff generally doesn’t belong at a hockey game because it’s often not intense and invigorating enough.

I want the Devils to be like a Haunted House and a dark, creepy Tim Burton movie as much as possible. The colors and logo are perfect for this. (Not that mascot, that’s corny). Making Newark “scarier” does present a problem though.

by Alan Wright on Oct 7, 2011 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

While I would personally agree with you, I think you underestimate the Puritanical outlook of the average American (or at least the very vocal minority) and the outrage it might cause if an overzealous crusader got it stuck in their craw that it was destroying modern civilization and poisoning New Jersey’s youth.

It could very easily and very quickly become a nationwide (if not worldwide—I can just see the Pope issuing a statement about it) “issue” with politicians piling on to push their personal agendas and attract voters.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing because, as the old adage goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity… but that may be pushing the envelope to being the exception to the rule. While it would certainly appeal to a certain number of people in certain demographics, I’d venture to say that it would alienate far more and that the demographics it did appeal most to aren’t the ones most marketing agencies would target as typical hockey fans with the disposable income available to not only maintain, but increase revenue.

by elesias on Oct 7, 2011 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s true that the “average American” (always a useful construct even if it is something of a canard) is more puritanical than I am. But, I would suggest they may be too puritanical to live hockey, or support a team called the Devils. Also, the puritanical American doesn’t live in Wayne, NJ or Glen Rock, NJ. He lives in Wayne County, Indiana or Little Rock, Arkansas. So, they’re not the target market for the team or its merchandise.

If The Pope and his legion or Westboro Baptist Church are actually willing to protest the New Jersey Devils… well then that’s one hell of a media coup for the Devils. Pun intended.

I may underestimate how vociferous those puritans are, but I also can’t speak much to NHL fan demographics. I think the arena fans are mostly male, mostly white, mostly 18-35, and mostly loudmouth jerks. Well, I am anyway.

The problem is that celebrating the persona that many people around the world feel has Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot and Jeffrey Dahmer all over for dinner every night will attract the attention of non-hockey supporters.

All it takes is a soccer mom in East Middle-of-Nowhere, Kansas to take affront and it balloons from there.

by elesias on Oct 7, 2011 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You might be right, but I guess I don’t care!

But, it’s funny you should mention having Hilter, Pol Pot, and Dahmer for dinner because that’s actually a feature of one of the oldest images of Satan… literally, having sinners for dinner.

Specifically, I’m referring to the image of Satan in Dante’s Divine Comedy, in which Satan resides at the 9th circle of The Inferno. There, frozen into a lake, Satan’s three heads gnaw on Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. The theory is simple: Satan betrayed God though he was once his most favored of angels, and those three betrayed their masters though they were most favored as well. It’s there, in the most vile circle of hell that they are punished.

For me, the symbolism is much more interesting: The Devil, dark and disgusting himself, sits on a hockey rink gnawing at the heads of other sinners.

addition to the cheers

When goals are scored, the announcer won’t say players’ last names. The fans are expected to shout them. like:

announcer: New Jersey goal, scored by number 17, ILYA….
crowd: KOVALCHUCK!!
announcer: assisted by number 9, ZACH
crowd: PARISE!!

They’ve tried this before without telling anyone they were doing it which just lead to awkward silence… “DAAVIIIIIIIID……. clarkson.”

Now that there’s a way to get these ideas out, it looks like they’re trying it again. Not sure if they’re starting it off immediately with the game tomorrow or not. I guess we’ll see.
