Devils Ups and Downs: Week 7

Clarkson has become the New Hotness.

It's time for Week 7 of Devils Ups and Downs. The Devils went 2-2 over the last 7 days with one incredibly rage-inducing loss (Which thankfully, no one saw because of all the Crosbymania). Regardless, here's who made the biggest impacts and who regressed the most.

Biggest Gains- David Clarkson

Okay, maybe it's time for me to stop complaining about him. He's simplified his game alot and it seems to be working. I haven't seen nearly as many Clarkarounds as I have before. He's doing a good job passing the puck and providing solid physical play. He's also not fighting- which is excellent because the way he's playing, him spending 5 minutes in the box.

Also, I'd like some Ketchup with my Crow please.

Biggest Losses- Nick Palmieri

He might have had a two goal game on Tuesday vs Boston, but after Kovalchuk returned, he was pretty much relegated to 4th line duty on Saturday and scratched for Rod Pelley.

Notes

Martin Brodeur

Up_medium_medium

MB has been the difference maker for the Devils since his return. That and he's the only Devil who seems interested in playing the full 60 minutes (see what I did there? *crickets*)

Johan Hedberg

Down_medium_medium

Moose will see some action- but with Brodeur's solid play over the last week he's likely only going to see action when the Devils have Back-to-Back games. Also needs to stop playing the puck

Notes

Mark Fayne

Down_medium_medium

He didn't have a lot of trouble with Seguin, Vanek or Stamkos, but was beaten by those team's other lines as well as Florida's top line. If he continues to play this inconsistently I hope Urbom or Gelinas replace him.

Mark Fraser

Down_medium_medium

Could see action with Volchenkov's injury.

Andy Greene

Up_medium_medium

About the same defensively and contributing offensively. Which is exactly what the Devils re-signed him to do.

Adam Larsson

Dash_medium_medium

With the slight increase in games in November, fatigue is catching up to Larsson- he looked pretty out of it against the Sabres. Regardless, he's finally finding his offensive games- with two assists in the last two games and 5 points (1 G, 4 A) in November.

Bryce Salvador

Dash_medium_medium

Hasn't been bad or good in general.

Henrik Tallinder

Dash_medium_medium

Like Salvador, he hasn't been noticeable in a bad way or a good way.

Anton Volchenkov

Ow_medium_medium_medium_medium

His play was decent this week, but the team really missed him on Monday. For all we know he could be back Tomorrow with a full cage.

Notes

Eric Boulton

Ow_medium_medium_medium_medium

Could be back soon. Or not.

Ryan Carter

Dash_medium_medium

He's been great- he's just got to cut down on the dumb penalties.

David Clarkson

Up_medium_medium

See: Biggest Gains

Patrik Elias

Dash_medium_medium

Not sure if he can get any better or any more consistent. Had a 7 game points streak snapped and comes back with 4 points in the next three games.

Adam Henrique

Dash_medium_medium

He's holding his ground, he just hasn't scored since the Hurricanes game. Does look dangerous and hungry though.

Cam Janssen

Up_medium_medium

He Drew a Penalty. That's probably the only contribution he'll have this season, and since he really can't get any worse...

Jacob Josefson

Ow_medium_medium_medium_medium

Still out until February.

Ilya Kovalchuk

Up_medium_medium

Since returning from Injury, he's got 2 goals and an assist. Looks like he's back to 100%,

Brad Mills

Dash_medium_medium

Not good or not bad. About the same.

Nick Palmieri

Down_medium_medium

See: Biggest Losses

Zach Parise

Up_medium_medium

Has been much better this week, but he does have a tendency to disappear at times. He could really use Zajac.

Rod Pelley

Dash_medium_medium

He got into a game. Did nothing, however

Petr Sykora

Up_medium_medium

Continues to work well with Elias and Zubrus

Mattias Tedenby

Dash_medium_medium

He’s been playing great, he’s just yet to capitalize on it like Clarkson has.

Travis Zajac

Ow_medium_medium_medium_medium

He's skating, but no new updates from TG or Chere.

Dainius Zubrus

Up_medium_medium

Killing Penalties and facing tough competition, all while still providing some solid offense.

How’s Anton been doing this season? Before the injury.

Pretty much invisible, which is what you want from your shut-down monster.

He doesn’t so much play with the defensive coverage partner he needs to really line guys up for crushing hits in NJ, but he is very efficient as he quietly does his job. He’ll occasionally unleash the cannon, usually miss, but he’s not here to score goals. Loves us the Anton. The injury isn’t anything serious. Probably won’t miss any time.

I’m not going to lie to you. It felt good and I’m going to do whatever is in my power possible to stay there as long as I can. - Petr Sykora on playing on a line with Elias and Parise.

I loved me some Anton too

Wish him all the best. Was one of my favourites in Ottawa. :D

Glad to hear he is doing well.

I agree with all of these except Fraser. He didn’t even play at all this week so I would have expected him to be neutral.

yeah that was a litte harsh. I kind of diagree with Fayne as well. He is apparently the only D man on the team who shot the puck on net and occasionlly get it to go in. And he had a goal this week. His D hasnt been perfect but he is beating Andy Greene in ice time and thus far has been more consistent than Greene in ice time.

DeBoer

Do we have a ranking on the coach as well? Its fairly concerning that his team didnt feel motivated to finnish out the game and get a win for ther coach against his former team. That could be signs of a chemistry problem between coach and players. But there is more evidence: the devils havent played 60 minutes hardly at all this year, the LA Kings being the only exception that comes to mind. This is another indication the coach may not be getting the battle level and motivation out of his players that is arguably a coaches number one responsibility. A futher sign of worry is that under DeBoer neither Kovy nor Parise have really gotten it going yet. We saw the difference between the kovy unde MaClean and Lemaire. Yes he had a rebound goal, but has yet to be a dominant force on the ice. Parise has only been worse, you used to always know when parise was on the ice, now he is oftne invisible of late. All the above needs to chance and DeBoer’s report card is mixed at best given the lack of 60 minute play.

by max16s on Nov 22, 2011 2:12 PM EST reply actions

I’m starting to give Cam a little more respect. He hasn’t really been gooning it up, and the puck has moved in the right direction sometimes when he’s been out there. I’d still prefer a 10 minute guy capable of scoring, but at least I’m not a quivering mass of panic every time he steps on the ice.

by Murdoc on Nov 22, 2011 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Cam Janssen’s role on this roster is to goon it up. That he’s not doing it…. and that other players are doing it for him when he’s on the ice is not a particularly promising sign. Peter DeBoer clearly does not trust Janssen in very many situations, considering how often someone else is double-shifted in that spot on the 4th line.

This team would be much better off with a different player in that spot who might offer something else. Even if “something else” is enough faith from the coaching staff to play more than four minutes per night, especially in light of how much ice time some of the other forwards are logging.

I disagree about Fayne, Kovy and Parise.

Fayne is doing ok to me, even last night. I’m really more concerned by Salvador.
Kovy doesn’t look like he’s 100% or he just needs to be slower player at RW, still not a good news.
Parise has to be a more effective player.

i agree completely. Dont know where the positive stuff on parise is coming from. slow start generous descrption of his season thus far. Kovy still has to get going. you hope he is healthy. and Fayne can at least put the puck on net from the blue line.

by max16s on Nov 22, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

A little harsh on Fayne. I for one would not like to see what Urbom or Gelinas would do with that ice time.

Tedenby is playing great? What have you been watching?

by NJ#27 on Nov 22, 2011 3:12 PM EST via mobile reply actions

he does have some serious skill and speed. devils need to find a way to get production out of him.

by max16s on Nov 22, 2011 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

That’s easy, send him to Albany to play against near-NHL level talent.

by elesias on Nov 22, 2011 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

I have to agree – why is Tedenby getting an up arrow? For two good periods in Boston?

I’m actually ready to trade him.

by NJDOhio on Nov 23, 2011 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

I’m sure there are a whole bunch of teams that would love to give up a few picks or a middling RW or something to get a young player with Teddy’s obvious raw talent. If they’re not going to play him on a scoring line, they should send him to Albany. At least he’ll get more minutes there and have a real offensive role.

by Felon on Nov 23, 2011 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Love this as a weekly feature. Agreed that Faynes is a little harsh. I dont think the leash on him would be that short considering Fayne has proven he can be effective and has done so while playing almost 20 minutes a night.

On the bright side: Henrique is 5th in rookie scoring with 11 pts. Larsson is tied for 2nd in rookie scoring among defensemen with 5 pts (1 behind Marc Andre Gragnani)

by JoeyV on Nov 22, 2011 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Ive been kind of dissapointed in Larsson’s shot. thought he would pull a better trigger from the point than ive seen thus far

by max16s on Nov 22, 2011 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Fayne

Really harsh on Fayne. You point to the Florida game. But he was only on for one of Florida’s goals. Which was caused by a turnover by Faynes partner Tallinder.

For a guy who is a +2 +/- (which leads the team tied with Green and Elias) and on pace for 12 goals. Who has probably been the best all around D-man.

a bit ruff.
