New Jersey Devils & Anaheim Ducks Trade
As reported in the link by Tom Gulitti, the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks just made a deal. Devils acquire defenseman Kurtis Foster and minor league goalie Timo Pielmeier; Ducks get in return Mark Fraser, Rod Pelley, and a 2012 7th round pick. I feel like this is the Zalewski deal all over again, which is to say, "eh."

I think taking a roll of the dice with Foster as a PP specialist is well worth Pelley, Fraser and a 7th round pick. Both of those guys weren’t even playing. Foster will.
This
He may not pan out to be more than a bottom two D man, but we just traded two guys without roster spots for a guy who by any measure is an NHL defenseman, and a spare part goalie.
Foster will likely do more for our PP than Fraser or Pelley did at all. The only potential loss is Pelley on the PK, but…. if you’re not dressing its hard to be on the PK. By my guesstimate were on the hook for around a 1.1 mil of his cap hit. Worse case, he doesnt pan out, hes a UFA at the end of the season.
I wasnt sure about the move at first, but looking at it closer, its a gamble. But I like the odds.

I think I like this deal.
I don’t see really anything good about it besides getting rid of Fraser, although I liked him at one point, but he didn’t have a place anymore, and Pelly…
At least we have openings to play other defenseman now, and perhaps prevents us from making potentially difficult decisions when Zajac and Josefson come back.
Too bad this wasn’t for Bobby Ryan though…
Its a good deal
Neither Pelley nor Fraser were going to get any time this year. Neither can score, and neither would be with the team after this year. In exchange we get a guy who is pretty inconsistent, but is an upgrade as far as scoring defense.

During the Versus Broadcast
They were talking about how much of a shot foster has. Fulton Reed-esque. I guess he was known for breaking glass pains in Tampa. I like the thought of him and kovalchuk playing catch with the prospect of either shooting the puck.

That puck is headed towards the faceoff dot a second after it went in…me likey.

Foster’s NHL numbers are uninspiring…. but it isn’t like the Devils have brought him in expecting him to be The Savior or anything. Other than the money (Foster makes $1.8 million this year), the Devils didn’t really give up anything of real value. I imagine Lou is simply taking a flier on a guy who might be able to help. In addition, the Devils open up a slot on the 23-man roster — which I imagine goes to Travis Zajac between now and Friday night.
Worst case scenario: the Devils are out some cash, while Foster replaces Fraser as the team’s 7th defenseman.
Otherwise, I imagine Foster could push Bryce Salvador for the last spot on the blue line. Should that happen, it would be a “good problem” to have.

Pelley can’t shoot like this.
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
Good - another righty shot
I argued for trading Fraser for a bag of peanuts and signing Stralman early in the season, and this is essentially what this move amounts to.
Fraser has been a healthy scratch to make way for Taormina and Urbom in recent games, so it seems that among LEFTY defensemen Fraser sits roughly 7th on the depth chart behind those two and Tallinder, Greene, Volchenkov, and Salvador. I don’t think a player could get any more expendable than that.
The new development since I wrote that FanPost is that Larsson has struggled as a rookie in quarterbacking the PP. Acquiring Foster gives the Devils another option to bring Larsson along a little more slowly and is also good PP insurance in the event that Larsson or Fayne go down with an injury.
Pelley, like Fraser, has been scratched and seen Carter, Mills, and Sestito ahead of him on the center depth chart and Boulton and Janssen pass him as well, with Palmieri and Tedenby in the mix on the fourth line when they land in the doghouse.
I have no idea what Foster is like other than the reputation that precedes him, of course. Best case scenario is probably that he challenges Bryce Salvador’s spot, worst case is that he’s scratched just as Fraser was. He may very well turn out to be a PP specialist, but the fact is that he has something unique to contribute to the blueline that wasn’t there with Fraser.
And by the way, for all those worried about the Devils’ financial situation – this is no cheap pickup from a money point of view. Perhaps, finally, Lou has decided to save his cap space for filling gaps during the season and not to spend it willy-nilly on overpriced free agents, rather than being confined by a strict budget imposed by ownership.
Your last point is an interesting one. The Devils do save some money since Foster’s been paid for a few months now, but the Devils essentially added salary here in spite of “the budget.”
I’m looking at the 5-on-5 stats of his career at Behind the Net, where he’s only had 3 seasons with more than 10 games played out of the last 5 (this season included). I can’t say I’m impressed with his work at evens; but he did have three different teams. I suspect that he’s going to be used as a third pairing as well as on the PP once he gets settled with NJ.
The more I think about the deal, the more I think it’s a not a bad move. If it doesn’t work, then nothing is really lost and if it does on the PP at a minimum, then the Devils are improved in an area they could use help in.

It’s not a bad move, but it’s not a good move either. Foster probably becomes a 7th D and provides some measure of depth but he’s not really a good option to take a regular shift. The good news is that the Devils get rid of Pelley and Fraser who were both basically not going to play here anymore, but I think it will take Foster about 5 games to be the most hated Devils’ D.

i’m actually kinda happy that lou made a move at all to imrove the PP, especially in spite of “the budget”. and that is exactly how i will reference that. so we know it isn’t completely killing hockey operations, not that it ever was. but i would still bet they want to keep a cushion for more reasons than just the trade deadline.
Good move by Lou. Especially since he has already put Fraser and Pelley on waivers twice this year. The way I see it is that when they had all they’re regular skating d-men in a game they always had one pairing with two feft hand shots. Now they can put out three pairings with a right and left shot. Looks like the heat is on the left hand d-men two stay in the lineup.
