Devils Drop 4th Straight Despite Good Effort with 4-2 Loss to Jets

In the preview, I set the goal for the Devils to win with a 60 minute effort. I might have been asking to much. Tonight, the Devils put in a very good effort to win, but with a couple of reviewed goals not going their way and a shorthanded goal against, the Devils manage to lose 4-2 against the Winnipeg Jets. It's their 4th straight loss, and are now in fear of not winning a game on their 4 game road trip. They are also in fear of dropping below 0.500, as they now stand at 12-12-1.

I also mentioned the fact the Jets score early in games. They did just that less than two minutes into the game when Dustin Byfuglien shot the puck from the point and Evander Kane tipped it during it's journey. It looked like he tipped it high, but it was low enough for the call to get overturned after the video review. Adam Henrique scored on a very nice wrist shot passed Ondrej Pavelec's glove. Ilya Kovalchuk skated into the zone and made a quick pass to Zach Parise who made a nice cross ice pass to Henrique for the goal.

In the second period, the Devils were rewarded a 5-on-3 powerplay for 1:44 after controlling most of the period. Patrik Elias scored on a sharp angle and they had a lead in a game for the first time in what seems like forever. Then, just when you see the Devils play well for close to 40 minutes, they let up a shorthanded goal after a bouncing puck along the boards escapes Kovalchuk in the defensive zone which leads to an easy 2-on-1 Jets goal.

The Devils yet again put in a solid effort in the 3rd period, but Evander Kane crashes Johan Hedberg when the puck is thrown to the net mouth from the corner. The puck squeaks in, and the video review deems it a good goal. A good but failed effort to tie it ends with an empty net goal with 30 seconds left.

I have some more on the game after the jump. Visit Arctic Ice Hockey for the Jets side of things.

Here's the video from NHL.com:

After a solid performance the previous game, the Devils continued that in tonight's game. Quickly down 1-0, they did not let that get the best of them. At long durations of the game, they were the better team. Getting the puck in, creating chances, getting to lose pucks and doing ti all over again. Turnovers decreased and the passing was a lot better on the break out. They were sound defensively more times than not, and they managed to wrack up attempts.

I say attempts because one problem tonight was getting the puck to the net. Shots were 25-20 Devils and 18-17 New Jersey at 5-on-5. The Devils Corsi at even strength was +19 (+14 Fenwick). The Devils had 17 missed shots and 14 blocked shots. Goals are not going to happen when the puck doesn't get to the that 6 by 4 feet opening; 60% of the time, an attempt did not.

The Devils managed to get 62 attempts throughout the game to Winnipeg's 40. This and Corsi is good evidence they controlled most of the game. At about halfway through the 2nd period, the Devils had a 10-2 shot advantage in the period (shots ended 12-7 that period). They were rewarded a powerplay and then a golden 5-on-3 opportunity.

Speaking of the powerplay, it was pretty good minus two aspects of it. The good things first. 7 shots in 6:14 of powerplay time and a goal. Their passing in the offensive zone was good and accurate. They made good decisions on where to pass. They had some amazing opportunities where it was shocking they didn't score.

The first bad play was the shorthanded goal. After the Elias goal, Hedberg gets a cleared puck behind his net and wraps it around the boards by the far circle to Kovalchuk. He hugs the boards but it somehow bounces passed him. Bryan Little gets it and feeds Alex Burmistrov for a nifty goal. The other was the shortened powerplay to start the 2nd period. Though it did lead to a great pressure for the next 8 or 9 minutes.

Both top lines competed against eachother. The Parise-Henrique-Kovalchuk line saw Kane, Little and Blake Wheeler trio. They had a solid first two periods with some good puck movement. Kovalchuk finished with over 27 minutes of ice time, 4 shots on goal on 9 attempts. Both Parise and Henrique had 3 shots on 5 attempts. This line however was held shotless in the 3rd period. Credit the Jets defense for slowing them down late in the game. Parise led all forwards in Corsi at +15. Henrique was +11 and Kovy was +6 (he was double shifted on the 4th line as usual and that hurt his number - further evidence this is not working).

Henrik Tallinder and Mark Fayne also saw the best competition playing mostly with the Henrique line and up against Mark Stuart and and Zach Bogosian. They were a phenomenal +23 and+17 respectively. Only the Andy Greene (-6) and Anton Volchenkov (-3) were minus on the blue line.

Mostly everyone played well tonight except for Mattias Tedenby. I'm not even going to say Cam Janssen becuase you can't really say he played he was injured and went to the hospital after a stick hit him in the chest - x-rays were negative. He had 2 sifts, 1:27 TOI and a missed shot. Tedenby however finished -2 in Corsi and saw Eric Boulton take his place in the final 15 minutes. DeBoer most likely did becuase of his defensive play - but overall I don't think the time was warranted. He wasn't as quick with the puck that I would like he needs to play better defensively to get more time. I know talks of accountability have come up and I have to agree with the writings I saw. I think this is a sign DeBoer of doing exactly that though (and he's done it before).

So are some the highlighted events and stats for tonight's game. The best thing to take away from this game is they played well. They put in a good effort but they can show they can be a completely different team after the Colorado loss if they work hard. They skated hard to pucks, they made good decisions, they won battles - and that's the effort they need to complement their strategies and strengths. They were physical to and overall smart (only two minors), which is something I like to see from a team when in a rut.

I hope they keep their heads high and work on the good things and fix the bad things they did. What did you get from this game? Talk about it in the comments. Thanks for reading.

I take nothing positive out of this game.

We should have one goal for the rest of the season:

NO MORE SHORTIES!!

Play 4 guys back when we are on the PP. Let Kovy skate around 1 on 4, he does it the rest of the time anyway.

When is Lemaire coming back?

LOVE the PP idea!

Back in a game thread I suggested parking a D-man on our blue line and playing 4-4. But this idea is much better!

I still say we need 2 D-men on the PP.

Some concerning numbers.

The Devils are still in the mix, but one thing jumps out at me. The Devils currently now have the least amount of ROW in the Eastern Conference (7), and only Columbus and Anaheim have less (6) in the entire league.

I’m holding out hope that their good efforts will eventually pay off. Today’s game was probably more frustrating to me than the game against the Avalanche. It’s a lot easier to handle a loss when the team just doesn’t show up than it is to see the Devils get nothing out of a solid effort.

For all the crap that Kovalchuk gets, I felt like he had a quality game tonight. He created a lot, made a great play on the first goal, and generally made pretty smart decisions with the puck.

In summary .. the first goal was simply a great deflection by Kane. The second goal was just a terrible pass by Hedberg. You can’t put your skaters in a position like that on a power play. The third goal was honestly just a terrible play by Hedberg. Kovalchuk forced the play wide, Elias pressured the d-man along the boards. Both correct plays. Stuart throws a prayer in front of the net, and Hedberg just lets it go right through him. That can’t happen.

Yes, two goals doesn’t usually win you games, but Pavalec made the saves when he needed to, and Hedberg did not. That’s what decided this game.

by dasru on Dec 4, 2011 12:14 AM EST reply actions

Agreed. Its not the turnovers or the goals they have given up. Its the lack of scoring.

No. I mean it should be “loss” instead of “lose”

I don’t know what game you were watching. The Devils outplayed the Jets for most of this game. The second and third goals were GIFTS provided to the Jets by Hedberg.

by dasru on Dec 4, 2011 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

Oh. Right.

In my opinion, a good effort against the Jets is a 6-2 win.

We did play better the last 2 games than we did in the wins against the Jackets and the Isles, so maybe its things balancing out.

The Leafs scored 5, and could have had much more the last time we played them. Its gonna take a little more than a “good effort” in Toronto.

Absolutely. The Leafs have been playing great (except when they play Boston). They destroyed the Devils (mostly Brodeur) last time they played each other. A “good effort” vs the Jets provided them with a loss against one of the below average teams in the East. We’ll see what happens on Tuesday.

by dasru on Dec 4, 2011 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks

Sorry about that everyone. I had had two titles and then combined them (and then forget to turn Lose to Loss). Just call me The Hedberg of Titles.

To mogilny89 – Pavelec played very, very well. Zubrus and Elias specifically had amazing opportunities to score. They Devils played like they could have score 4 or 5 goals in my opinion. I felt if they just got more shots on net, there would have been more of a chance to score a goal (obviously).

I say they had a good effort becuase they did. The results didn’t come out. It happens. But this is a complete 180 from what I saw against Colorado – which is the best to take out of this game. They limited their mistakes and turned the puck over less frequent on the breakout. When they control the neutral zone, they control possession and Corsi.

The top line has scored goals in the last three games. This is another huge positive to take. I think they have found the long awaited chemistry we have been hoping for all these weeks. If they and the whole team keep this up – they will win games.

Re: what you wrote to Mogilny… Pavelec did not play “very very well”… how can you even say that? You make it sound like this game is going to be on the highlight reels on ESPN. He only had 31 shots and had one great save considering the caliber of goalies in the NHL… and to balance that out Elias scored a VERY VERY lucky goal that even he was like “oh wow, i guess I’ll take it!”

Our hard work got us ONE honest goal and our giant mistakes yielded 3 goals (I’ll give that first one to Kane, it was good)

Nothing about that game was a GOOD effort.

You don’t watch that final goal Moose let in and say, wow, that’s a GREAT effort from the NJ Devils tonight.

Or see that bad pass to Kovi that went straight in the net 5 seconds late and say to yourself… really GOOD effort this game.

by jBrett on Dec 5, 2011 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

They played pretty well for 2/3rds of the game. It was surprising how vocal the Jets arena was, and how much hatred they aimed at Kovy and Moose. Once again, a short handed goal and inability to keep the pressure on in the 3rd period killed this team.

But Moose? Atlanta cheered him last season.

Don’t forget about the inability of Moose to play a puck cleanly behind his own net. And also, Moose letting a bad angle shot go right through him. As much as I like what he’s done for the Devils this year, this loss is on him.

by dasru on Dec 4, 2011 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

When Moose leaves the net…..bad things happen.

na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!

by mogilny89 on Dec 4, 2011 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

He just doesn’t make smart decisions with the puck. Most of the time, he waits too long and is forced into making a play that puts his skaters in a terrible position. This is not the first time he’s tried to force a pass that has handcuffed the target.

He didn’t have to make that pass to Kovalchuk. Burmistrov was backing off, and he could’ve held onto it to make a CLEAN pass up, or just left it for Fayne. Instead he decides to just flutter the puck along the boards.

As much as most of us wish to see someone else in charge of the powerplay, this SHG was not a result of anything that could’ve been controlled by coaches. I said it before, I’ll say it again. That goal was all on Hedberg.

by dasru on Dec 4, 2011 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

I respecfully disagree with the opinions on the shortie goal. The Devils were lackadasical coming back into their zone to play the puck. They saw that a Jets player was right with them and should have moved quickly to get the puck and carry it out of the zone. Hedberg sent the the disc along the wall to Kovalchuk who was not in good position to receive it, and move it up ice. He should have the skill to control a pass along the wall. Meanwhile, no one was covering the forechecker stationed below the circle, in perfect position to receive the pass and one-time it into the net. I don’t hang that one on Hedberg.

by Barry G on Dec 4, 2011 3:38 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, after FINNALY scoring on the PP devils stopped playing, they let off the pedal. It was clearly visible. Saddly for us they payed for it imidetly.

Hedberg definitely deserves some credit for the shorty, I can’t believe that was an intended pass for Kovy there. But I agree, they probably stopped playing after the PP goal, it looked like at least.

If that’s the case, then it’s still Hedberg’s fault. If the puck is put into an awkward position or the target is not in a good position, the fault lies with the one making the pass, not the receiver. The decision should have been to either fire it hard up-ice around either side away from anyone or delay until a Devil was in a good position.

Mark Fayne was right there near the net with Burmistrov, but he didn’t anticipate the turnover after the pass by Moose. Moose could have easily made the backhand pass behind the net along the boards (opposite side to where Kovy was) to Fayne actually. At least a skater has the puck in the corner behind the net facing a forechecking Burmistrov and not in front of the net by the circle where Kovy is in a vulnerable spot.

Kovalchuk's Number

I may have missed this if someone noted it somewhere, but does anyone have the number of goals against Kovalchuk this year whether it be by obvious turnover or by fairly clear mistake like the one off the Hedberg pass earlier tonight? If my count is correct he has at least a couple more “goal against” than he does actual goals this year.

at least these two losses were better efforts overall. im not big pete DeBoer fan, at least not yet, but I will credit the effort has been better the past two games. If all their losses had a similar effort i wouldnt be as concerned. the past two games have been the devils closest to 60 minute effort since the LA Kings game.

by max16s on Dec 4, 2011 4:18 AM EST reply actions

Pete has to find a better balance between the offensive and the defensive zone plays. The Devils are conceding way too many odd man rush/game.

Otherwise, I hope kids like Zharkov and Palmieri will be called back pretty soon to create a solid 4th line… And magically we could win those close games again perhaps ? At this level, details make the difference. Pete be smarter please !

I know that probably won’t happen, but I wouldn’t be upset to see Taormina getting a shot over Salvador too. Matt is tearing it up in the AHL. Bryce on the other hand, is not playing very well overall and brings absolutely nothing offensively. At 35, it’s not like he’s got room to make progress moreover.

by Elektrostal_Kid on Dec 4, 2011 4:58 AM EST reply actions

I agree with bringing Tao up

There are a bunch of weaknesses on this team but the ability of our d men to move the puck continues to be a big one. I liked Salvador as a good solid d man in the past but he has clearly fallen off.

Taormina would lead this team in scoring by a d man. And as much as people complain about his d ability with the number of turnovers by salvador there would not be much difference

They should send down Fraser and make Salvador the healthy scratch. Won’t happen though they don’t want to pay Fraser NHL money to play in the minors

Unless he’s stopped panicking when pressured in his own zone, he would also lead the team in giveaways. That was a huge problem last year. I sincerely hope he gets over it, or has gotten over it.

Agreed. Hell, bring up Tao, Urbom, and play Fraser more, I don’t care. Do something to light a fire under this team’s ass.

It’s also about time that Larsson shows he has an NHL slapshot.

by NJallDay on Dec 4, 2011 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

HA

it could not hurt Tao, Urbom, hell Larsson still has a long way to go. racking up a lot of minutes is not really helping with this kid yet…and yet because he will be a bad ass one day just not yet! Why not send Larsson down to work on his slapshot! BLA

by ANDY IN VA on Dec 4, 2011 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

You work on a slapshot in practice, through rote and repetition and creative drills. Sending a legitimate NHL defenseman to the AHL “to work on his slapshot” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard on this blog…. and there are a lot of stupid suggestions put out there by various readers (myself included).

You might also wait until the off-season to “work on his slapshot”, because it might be an issue of upper-body strength which requires conditioning and specific exercises in the weight room through a carefully-controlled regimen and under the watchful eyes of training and support staff.

by acasser on Dec 4, 2011 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Good recap

I do agree that the Devils do have to still work on a number of things, such as making sure most of those attempts get on net. they make smarter decisions with the puck at times, the power play, and so forth. Yet, this game and last game have shown me that their overall approach to the game can definitely succeed; since they dominated in possession as noted. My concern is that with the four game losing streak, the team/players will get discouraged and get frantic trying to do something else instead of continuing their process.

I say fire Oates. You could see it in his eyes that he didn’t sound really convincing or confident when he drew up a play during the timeout. Still can’t believe that they are trying the umbrella though on the PP with the same formation that gets them consistently burned. The PP goal they got yesterday was lucky and I can barely remember any powerplay goals that came from good plays.

I agree with you popp! Oates is not working & I wounder how long it will be before Lou comes down on Deboer. I will say though the devils did look a little better, I just feel like they could be playing a lot better. I’m not saying the hole poop hole thing is all on the coaches because it not. I have been worried about our defense from the start and I thought our offense would be better then this!
That being said, I know this team would be in better shape if Joffer & Zajac were not injured. An injury is something you can not control but, you would think that this team would be able to hold up a little better with out them?
I thought they would!!??

goon boys sit

So Cam is hurt. They could try something diff with the 4th line. Sit the other goon boy Boulton and make the 4th line more talented. Say more forechecking etc. Try something different……
If you guys were the coaches, who would you put on a 4th line if the goon boys took a break as scratches?? The team could maybe be better if all 4 lines were more productive?!!

The team could maybe be better if all 4 lines were more productive?!!

The team could be better if they received production from the Power Play and offensive production from more than one line at a time.

The fourth line isn’t the real issue, here. Getting two lines going at the same time, and having a third line that can contribute would be far more helpful than slightly increasing the talent level of a fourth line.

Getting some players back from injury would help as well. Travis Zajac is far better than anyone you’ll get from Albany (e.g. Zharkov) to bulk up the offense. Jacob Josefson is better than anyone you’ll get from Albany to bulk up the offense. Even Urbom or Taormina wouldn’t be a substantial improvement to the blue line, because one defenseman isn’t going to make that much of a difference.

by acasser on Dec 4, 2011 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

agree with the Urbom and Tao helping out the blue line.
what about until we get those guys back from injury? 3rd and 4th line could use a shake up.

There’s no good reason to break up Parise-Henrique-Kovalchuk right now, even though I personally don’t approve of the line (but I do approve of its production recently). If you’re not going to break up Sykora-Elias-Zubrus, there’s nothing to talk about insofar as the third and fourth lines — any shuffling of personnel there would have marginal results at best.

You’d need to shake up all of the top three lines to have any impact before you get Travis Zajac back.

Kovy – Henrique – Palmieri
Sykora – Elias – Zubrus

I say we warm up the shuttle and start rotating some guys in from the farm. Make the 4th and 3rd forward lines and the bottom d-pairing play by committee. Give guys like Zharkov, Anderson, Zalewski, Wiseman, Sislo, Veilleux, Corrente, Taoromina, and Urbom a shot over the next few weeks rotating back and forth from Albany and getting in a couple of games each. Maybe someone does well and sticks with the squad, maybe our current players get motivated and start preforming, at this point you can’t hurt the situation. Take away any pretense of people having their spots guaranteed. Bench players that aren’t playing well for a game or 2, that includes top line players. Let it be known that the players that preform will be the ones who play and get the good ice time.
