Poll: WIll you watch Flyers/Rangers 24/7
As most of you know, the Rangers and the Flyers will be featured on HBO's 24 / 7 show this year, which airs on December 14th.
This is the second year of the show - last year brought us into the lives of the Penguins and the Capitals.
I for one am not sure whether I will watch the show. I say this for three reasons:
1) I cannot stand either team
2) I do not want to learn more about the players I hate. Especially, Sean Avery.
3) Despite this, I really enjoyed the show last year and thought it was a really interesting look at the lives of professional hockey players.
Will you watch the show this year if you have HBO?
Do you think the show will receive higher ratings this year?
Will that just be do to the New York connection? Or will it be popular outside of New York too?

I’ll watch it. While I hate both teams, I find the silver lining in this scenario. The candid moments shown by HBO of both teams losing games, not having a recent Stanley Cup Championship, and the intellectual insight of brilliant hockey minds like Chris Pronger and Sean Avery will keep fueling my hatred for years to come.
Definitely, 100% yes. I love to watch what happens inside of a dressing room. I watched last years on youtube, and enjoyed it a lot. Even though I hate both teams, it still in my mind a great show. Plus i now have a hi-def PVR with HBO.

Wait, there’s no option for “Yes, on the very small chance that a random person picks a fight with Sean Avery and pummels him”?

Not a single second of it. It doesn’t hurt that I don’t have HBO, but I wouldn’t even if I did.
I’m not deluded into thinking a team like the Devils will ever get a WC and thus this kind of exposure, so I’m not one to complain about it being “unfair”, but that doesn’t mean that I have to support the same 6 or so teams “earning” the right.
Not a chance
When the NHL start giving respect to the Devils I may watch shows like this or the NBC games of the week-which I never watch on principal.
The Devils have won more titles than all Philly pro sports teams combined in the last 25 years

My two most hated teams, but...
I want to see Laviolette in action. He’s turned the Flyers into a team I have to grudgingly respect. Bylsma was worth watching last year too. I also want to see if Tortorella is as much of an ass as he seems to be in post-game interviews.
I have a feeling Laviolette is going to be exactly like Bylsma and Torts will be cursing his head off like Boudreau.

Definitely going to be watching this. If you’re a hockey fan, why WOULDN’T you watch it? I actually think this series is better than the Winter Classic game itself. There’s nothing else out there that offers as close of a glimpse into the everyday life (at home and rink) of professional hockey players throughout part of the season, let alone anything that’s as well put together. HBO does a stand up job with all of their sports documentaries and series, and TRWC isn’t any different. People who didn’t watch last year for whatever reason and are already saying they won’t watch this year really don’t know what they’re missing.
Do I hate/despise both these teams? Of course. But I’m still 100% anxiously anticipating the airing of this series. It’s going to be incredible to watch.
People who didn’t watch last year for whatever reason and are already saying they won’t watch this year really don’t know what they’re missing.
Or do, and still don’t care. There’s almost always at least one other option when one speaks in absolutes.
But elesias, my statement is true if you take the time to read it. I said if you didn’t watch last year (the first year it was ever run), then you don’t know what you’re missing. What’s wrong with that?
It was funny to read you talk about absolutes too because just above you posted for yourself that:
I’m not deluded into thinking a team like the Devils will ever get a WC
Ok, my point was that it looks odd when you rag on someone for using absolutes, when an earlier post you made in the same thread was guilty of the same thing. I’m just pointing this out because it’s hypocritical and I’m sure you forgot about it or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
Also, I’m still waiting to be filled in as to how someone who has never watched a show before can know what they’re missing.
There’s a difference between speaking in absolutes to present a false dilemma and stating a fact based on previous precedent and an understanding of how things work. It’s not even a particularly subtle difference.
The only way the Devils get a WC is if they’re selected to play against one of the regulars, which is unlikely because A) they’re not a great ratings draw, B) their viewing markets overlap with two of the teams they’d logically play against that would get a WC and C) the remaining favorites have more inflammatory and exciting rivalries.
Also, I’m still waiting to be filled in as to how someone who has never watched a show before can know what they’re missing.
Disregarding your intimation that we live in vacuum of news coverage and water-cooler talk, I’ll just give a simple, but crude, example: I’ve never been a Nazi, and I’m pretty sure you haven’t either, but I think it’s safe to say we both know what we’re “missing”.
Okay, unfair comparison. I committed Godwin’s Law for effect and it was in poor taste as well as not really accurate. I retract the statement.
Compare it to, say, eating Brussels sprouts. I know I don’t like them because I don’t like the way they look or smell and I resent people telling me I’m wrong because I haven’t actually put them into my mouth.
It’s the same with the show. I don’t like the teams involved, reality television or much care for knowing athletes beyond what they do on the ice. To say I don’t know what I’m missing just because I don’t watch is along the same lines. I know well enough what the show is and have zero interest in watching.
It saddens me that these are the two teams involved with the show this year, because i very much enjoyed last year’s show. However I can’t contribute ratings to this. As elesias said earlier, I understand that we’ll never see the Devils receive exposure like this, but giving in and watching the show would only compound the problem. When they look at the ratings to see who was watching, If i were to watch they wouldn’t see that it was viewed by a Devils fan who’d much rather be watching something about the Devils. They only see it as in interested viewer, and I don’t want to support this.
I disagree with this reasoning though. If tons of hockey fans everyone demonstrate that this show and the WC itself are going to be universally viewed in high numbers by fans, regardless of their team allegiance, then why wouldn’t NBC be more likely to feature smaller market teams like NJ? Additionally, you know how ratings work and how NBC is going to be able to see a chart/graph that shows the exact viewer count from each area of the country. Jersey might be pretty heavily represented already because of the NY/Philly teams, but imagine if NJ was always rated extremely high in ratings for these types of events/games. I think it would help show that we’re loyal followers of the sport and helps our cause when the powers at hand debate over whether a game featuring NJ would sell out or get good ratings.
I did think of this and you make a really good point. I still feel like I’d be positively reinforcing them though. If they keep repeating the same 7 teams, and keep getting consistently high ratings, why would they feel a need to change? I’d imagine they’d either take the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. Or they’d just keep repeating the same teams even more. And especially being in NJ where as you mention they expect large ratings because of NY/Philly, I don’t see how my watching the show sends a message that I am discontent with how they are doing things.
I might be a Devils fan but I am also a HOCKEY FAN. Did you not watch the cup finals because the devils weren’t in it? Not watching this series strictly because your team isn’t in it is just dumb. It’s a great series and to go inside the locker room of a NHL team is awesome.
Also, the Devils will never get a WC game because they will never draw ratings. Nobody wants to watch the Devils other than Devils fans. Devils sadly only appeal to one market and that’s New Jersey.
Rangers deserved to get into this year’s WC and not the Flyers who already played in one 2 years ago. Rangers draw way to many fans to not have them in one of these games.
Not watching this series strictly because your team isn’t in it is just dumb
But not watching because it features your two LEAST favorite teams is pretty reasonable in my eyes. Do you watch movies with your least favorite actors in them? I don’t. Would you go to a concert for a band you can’t stand? No. If you don’t like something specific about a sport, activity, whatever, doesn’t mean you’re not a fan of that sport. Just because I don’t like Limp Bizkit, Stone Temple Pilots, U2, and the Dave Mathews Band doesn’t mean I’m still not a music fan. The only way I’d watch a Rangers/Flyers games/series was if it was a guarantee they’d beat the living crap out of on another.
Go Devils
Go Jets
It’s far more than just not having the Devils in it. It has two of the teams I hate the most in the entire league. The only way it could be worse, imo, would be for it to have Rangers/Red Wings. Rags/Flyers is the second worst option. I don’t care about the teams at all and the only way I’d tune in would be if some act of God smited them from the planet.
Heres the problem with the ratings for the Devils when they are on example NBC (very rare) and they talk about the rating. They base it on the New York viewing area, they dont factor in the Philadelphia viewing area. North Jersey viewers count towards the New York number , likewise South Jersey falls into the Philadelphia numbers. You never get the full picture.
I understand the Rangers are more popular and have a larger fan base - but you dont get that larger fan base if you dont get the chance to be seen by a larger audience.

I am going to WC in my Devils Jersey and we’ll watch the game at a local South Philly bar. Who is with me?
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
ha i live in the area, i would do it but just being surrounded by fans of two teams who both hate our fan base could get ugly. It’d suck to see the flyers and rags fans reach “common ground” with their hatred for the devils.

I will only watch to learn things about the players I can mock to their fans.
Like Mike Green riding around on a mo-ped. I pray we get that kind of stuff this year.
And with Avery involved, I’m sure we will.
I may skip the game though. That I really don’t care about.
My “winter classic” is Devils@Sens later that night.
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
The next bad start and Philly will blame his goofiness for it. And that makes me happy.
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
As a rule
I dont watch Championship games (World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Final) when it features teams I hate and I wont watch this. It’s bad enough that despite being the more dominate team in NY among the three that the media will always be in bed with the Rags. (Its one the reasons I wish the team would get off MSG and go to SNY) The Isles only mentioned on WFAN for the fact that they lost the stadium vote.
