Dear Prospective Owner
Please pay no attention to the empty seats or the fact that the team will need to shell out 9 figures to keep it’s best player.
I wonder if Cory Booker can convince Mark Zuckerberg to buy the Devs.

As of the beginning of last season, the team was worth $223 million. So it’s probably around there now.

Well I don’t know how many insiders they have on the business side of the team or sports in general. It’s a just a rumor for now. Steele is a sports business writer so it’s possible (anything is possible really), so I see your point. This isn’t anything but a rumor unless it’s from the Devils.

Hate to say this, but “told you so.” I had a feeling, once Vanderbeek signed Kovalchuk, I felt like he was trying to market them and set them up for sale. He doesn’t want a rebuild if that’s what might happen.
Now, I have a feeling Mikael Prokhorov buys them. Kovalchuk, Zharkov, Volchenkov, Vasyunov, he’s got the Russian foundation he’d like.

I’m not sure I follow your logic. Vanderbeek signs Kovalchuk, Vanderbeek finds new owner, so Lou leaves?
Lou hasn’t been the same mastermind since the salary cap came in the post-lockout. Lou doesn’t like the new rules about defensive penalties, nor the trapezoid, he tries to build a defensive team around offensive players and a D-corp that has as much experience as…well, you get the point. He didn’t want Kovalchuk, I don’t care what anyone says. There is no way Lou Lamoriello would have re-signed Kovalchuk under his own supervision.
Now, I am almost confident in saying Mikael Prokhorov buys the Devils. Prokhorov’s Nets have already attempted to lure in NBA stars, of course, they’re failing miserably so far, but the defense of the past is farther away. Defense doesn’t win Stanley Cups, offense does with the right #1 defenseman.
If I had to guess, and despite certain accusations on here, I seem to guess right at these things, Lou’s son becomes GM or ownerships finds a new guy. I don’t think Lou wants a part of the future. That’s my opinion.

I am tempted to check the HF Boards to see what crazy Parise trade ideas have developed.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
In all seriousness, that did add a major X-factor in the Parise situation, because where’s the financial backing to give Parise a 6-7 or more year deal for another $50-70M? Kovalchuk is owed the greater part of $100M, then you’re going to add another “big” contract? This isn’t TB…

But in all seriousness, you’ve gotta Keep in mind Parise’s a RFA, meaning if teams want to throw tons of money at Parise because the Devils can’t, they’re going to have to realize that 1) this guy is coming off a serious injury and he might not be the same explosive player and they’re going to give up multiple 1st rounders for a player, and they could end up in the same situation as Toronto is in w/ Kessel and their trade.

Reasons why I don’t think this will happen:
JV is a Jersey guy. He’s part of the redevelopment program in Newark and has done countless things around the state. He owns a number of other Devils related businesses (Devils Arena Entertainment, and most of those eateries around the arena I believe). Jersey Tour was a big thing for an owner to do, why back out now? I think he has too much committed to just sell them, and honestly this puts the Devils in a very tough position with Kovy’s contract, and Parise’s contract talks coming up.
Reasons why I think this will happen:
He’s a stock market guy. He bought the team in 2004 for $125 million. He’s almost doubled that. Maybe he sees an opportunity to sell his stock at it’s highest amount. Will the value of this team increase or has it reached it’s peak? Maybe he doesn’t like what’s going on with the team, with Lou, with this season and simply wants out (or someone else to go in on it with him). Kovy’s contract may have been too much for him after the fact.

Don’t forget he lost a couple of $100MM when Lehman’s stock tanked, and I am not sure if his lawsuit recouped any of the lost value.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
I don’t think Vanderbeek ever really had a fortune, relative to people who own major professional sports teams. He probably lost a bunch in Lehman, and the Devils haven’t been making money. Bad time to get out though.
The arena has been making plenty of money.
I just had a silly thought: doesn’t Jeff technically lead an ownership group? Perhaps this a group issue more than a Jeff issue?

i’d be genuinely surprised if the arena has been making ‘plenty of money’. they are dark way too often for that to be the case.
They’ve been getting a lot of events and performances. The Nets and Liberty are here for two years. The NCAA Men’s East Regionals. They ranked 24th in world ticket sales for arenas and 11th in the US. That’s remarkable and that’s money.

The Isles TV contract gives them something like 25 million a year for the next ten years… its crazy.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon (no longer with a lack of stupid boarding penalties!)
Which leads to the question: why the heck are they operating on a shoestring budget?
I mean, they probably get 4 million from revenue sharing too… and we haven’t even gotten to merchandise and tickets yet.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon (no longer with a lack of stupid boarding penalties!)
They don’t get any revenue sharing because of the market they are in IIRC.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
Not surprising, but that’s not how it works in the CBA. There must be a secret anti-Islanders clause. :)
On the Mike Weber bandwagon (no longer with a lack of stupid boarding penalties!)
Bettman can’t let them move. With all the pig headed stubborn-ness he has shown trying to keep the southern teams from moving, he would look like a hypocrite and confirm every bad thought everyone has had about him if he turns around and lets ANOTHER northern team move with out a fight.

1. First of all, this is nothing more than rumor right now.
2. Secondly, Parise’s an RFA, he can be retained
3. There’s a salary cap, No matter who owns the team, with even the current roster without Parise they’ll be near the top, so there’s really no reason to not keep Parise, unless he, shudder to think this, doesn’t return to form.
4. Parise has been quoted as saying things like he wants to stay. As long as he’s not Gomez-greedy, he’ll stay.

Assuming the team is sold sometime soon, what are the odds that the team will be moved to Canada? Bettman has always been committed to his expansion teams in the south and has been adamant about not relocating them. He hasn’t seemed too fond of his own home-state team recently and this wouldn’t be the first time rumors of relocation involving the Devils arose.
See above. Very valid points on a) the difficulty of moving a sports franchise, b) the lease on the Prudential Center and c) did I mention it’s REALLY hard to move a franchise? So hard, the Isles are still around, even the bankrupt Coyotes are still there for now.

I’m fairly certain Rogers is getting the Bills because no one else seems to want them.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon (no longer with a lack of stupid boarding penalties!)
I don’t expect much will change. It needed to happen because of the New York-Golisano tax kerfluffle, otherwise, he was everything we wanted in an owner (not likely to be jailed, pays the bills, doesn’t ransack the team or move them to Hamilton.)
On the Mike Weber bandwagon (no longer with a lack of stupid boarding penalties!)
As Long As We Still Get Dollar Hot Dog Nights
I’m not sure I really care who owns the team. Maybe we’ve been pampered by good ownership. What’s an example of a bad owner ruining a team?
early 2000s Sabres. Our owner was carted off into jail and adopted a scorched earth policy in his wake. That good enough?

I thought it was mandatory to be a felon or potentially be a felon in order to purchase an NHL team.

hmmm
Sabres price is $20M over their Forbes 2010 evaluation of $169M. Could mean a Devil sale price of more like $240M. If it happens. So figure we need 2.4M fans to pull it off at $100 each. Maybe Vanderbeek ought to take the team public, sell shares of stock at like $50/share :-)

I also feel that an apology is appropriate for my, well let’s just say, overreaction to the supposed “news” of the sale. I am, for one, frustrated with the falling out of this season, and I’ve seen a fair share of ownership changes in New Jersey as well since McMullen left. It was almost impulsive…some of what I said, and it does not represent my complete opinions. I do apologize, and I expect a mockery to derive from this. Go ahead.

In a few instances, some people asked how long the lease agreement was between the Devils and the City. It’s not 20 years. That’s the agreement with Prudential financial. My fault. The agreement with the Devils is actually 30 years.

Yup. If the Brooklyn venue for the Nets hits a snag you never know what could happen.
My thinking is that VBK didn’t want Brick City to make this generally known to the public, but in efforts to raise awareness the firm retained by Brick City helped make the information available so that people know. Just a guess.
