I was putzing around some hockey jersey and logo concept sites and it always makes me wonder about the Devils. I love the Devils' jerseys; I think the logo and traditional makeup reflects the way the organization is run and how they perform on the ice. Lou doesn't believe in 3rd jerseys, and as long as a Lamoriello is in charge, the Devils and us fans won't see one. We'll get our retro day (which is awesome) and that's close enough.
But thats mean I can't dream right? I made a 3rd jersey concept that I thought I would share. What do you think? Do you think the Devils should have a 3rd jersey? If so, how and what would it be?

Nice jersey, though as much as I do love the ~~absence of~~ color black, I don’t think all black uniforms work (and it is reminiscent of the Hurricanes 3rd jersey.

What were your thoughts on the pants, black also?

As long as Abcde is cheaper.

I agree on the black uniforms actually – the NHL and reebok went crazy for black jerseys when they implemented the 3rd jersey program (again) in 08-09. Recently two-tone blue is the new black.

But for the Devils, black is really the only option. If they were to do another red or white jersey, they would either have to use a new logo (no wordmarks please) or change the striping into something more modern. I wasn’t comfortable doing that. When I was done with this, it actually reminded me of the Bruins or the old Hawks black jersey. But yeah, I see some of the Canes jersey there too.

I’m fine with black pants. I think every team that has a black jersey also has black pants (save for Coyotes I think). May as well go with black socks with the same striping patterns on the waist and sleeves.

Yeah, the solid color up around the neck/shoulders makes it closer to the Bruins than the Hurricanes, and now that I’m looking at them all with that eye, I think that lack of color there is what I’ve always disliked about Carolina’s.

Just thinking out loud, but to me the Devils primary color should always be red… so I wonder what it’d look like red with black highlights. Probably butt awful, but it would certainly make us look different!

3rd Jersey

I like the idea of the Devils making a 3rd jersey and as long is it a jersey close to yours, as in using the teams actual colors, I think it would be a good idea. I would oppose it though if they tried to make one like the Pens (light blue) that had nothing to with the team.

I like the Idea of a new/3rd jersey, but i’d be hesitant on going with black as the color of it because so many teams have already gone that route. the design of the jersey does look good though.

i dislike the black. EVERY ONE HAS A BLACK ALTERNATE

it wont stand out. If anything the devils alternate should be the old school green/red/white “the christmas jersey” Cause its retro and retro..for the most part is always cool

There are 11 teams that wear at least 1 black jersey (teams like Boston and LA have two). There are 11 teams that wear at least 1 red jersey (at least a shade of red). The Devils would only be the 5th team to have a red and black jersey.

i was speaking in generalities

in just about every major sport black is the go to color for the alt jersey. Its not cool or edgey anymore. if they’d go for a 3rd i agree with you it should be red

The black 3rd jersey is a very stale 90’s thing. It looks too much like the Hurricanes 3rd.

The Devils retro jerseys are great and I guess are like a de facto 3rd. I wouldn’t mind seeing them maybe 3-4 times a year.

I am a big follower of jersey design, and I can honestly, unbiased-ly say that the Devils have one of the top looks in the league. Clean, simple, bold, and very, very identifiable. I love the fact that we’ve had the same classic look for almost two decades now, as other teams trip over each other to follow trends.

Let the rest of the league keep futzing with their looks and annoying the fans, while we keep rocking the iconic red and black.

The rendering is well-done, though.

I completely missed the boat and I’m sorry.

Looking at most of the 3rd jerseys released over the years, it seems whatever the jersey is, it’s going to sell (either by how awesome, different, or ugly they are).

You should know by now that no player is above the team though. At least put Kovy’s head on the sleeves.

I think just having “New Jersey” in some way along the front would be cool. Like everyone else I don’t like the black, I don’t know what other color you could use though

I dig it, i always thought that color scheme would have been cool, I never thought of putting white piping on the border of the red shoulders though. I vote pass, Lou would probably fail it though because of the not wanting a third jersey claim. If I were GM though it would come between something like your design and the classic christmas jersey.

Silver

Add silver, for whatever reason I always associate the color with mystical beings. I wouldnt mind changing the primary logo to be honest, no matter how much I love it. I like the white piping around the shoulders.
Sadly, none of this will ever happen. Maybe Lou will expand the original Christmas jersey’s prominence.

I think adding silver would make this concept mirror the Canes black jersey.

I hope the retro jerseys make more than one appearance a year. Columbus day (colors are the Italian flag), a couple games around Christmas (between the 25th and the new year), and St. Patrick’s Day. 4-5 games a season would be great and are guaranteed sell-outs.

Perhaps it is a “guaranteed sell-out” because they’re such a novelty and not overdone? As with everything else that does great in limited runs and then gets beaten to death, I think putting the “classic” red-white-green jerseys out there several times a year would result in it not seeming so special, and diminish its effect. If we see it like a “third jersey” that gets thrown out there once a month, people will stop caring.

I would prefer this than the Devils’ jerseys from the 1980s and very early 1990s. I never liked the “Christmas tree” design and I think a black jersey actually fits this organization. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be – those jerseys tend to be ugly anyhow. This is to the point, it lets you know what’s up, and it fits with the other two jerseys.

That all said, I would prefer the Devils would be like Detroit and avoid third jerseys for the most part.

I was just in a hockey jersey mood that made me want to design one. I just used paint actually. Icethetics is a great NHL and minor league hockey jersey and logo news and updates site. He also shows off some concepts that people submit (some who do fantastic work..most are professionals doing it for fun). Puckdrawn and Sports logo are some others.

I have always loved the idea of having a jersey just like the whites,

except replacing the white with gray. Not a bright silver or anything, just the old-timey grey jersey material that you think of with baseball jerseys in the 20’s or something. I know that would really come out of nowhere, but I think it would look great and fit the organization.

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.
