Hockey Weekend Across America - Who's Your Favorite Hockey Hero/Legend?
Today culminates Hockey Weekend Across America with Hockey Day in America. Each day had an appropriate theme. up to today. Friday was "Wear your Favorite Jersey" where I asked you what your favorite sweater was. Saturday was "Bring a Friend to the Rink" where I asked you what your favorite arena experience was. Today is a combination of history and honoring, and sitting on the couch watching butt loads of NHL hockey.
Today's theme from USA Hockey is "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes" day. There is most likely a local rink or hockey club where someone has gone out of their way and beyond expectations to make the rink, or the organization better. Maybe they funded renovations for an old rink, or supplied equipment for a group of kids that couldn't afford it. Chris Peters from United States of Hockey has a great write-up on local hockey heroes.
Perhaps it's someone more known around your respective state. It didn't take me long to figure out my local hero. You should all know him well - It's Jim Dowd. The Brick, NJ (my hometown) native was the first and only player to be drafted by the New Jersey Devils who is from New Jersey. He won the Cup with the Devils in 1995, with his most notable contribution being the game winning goal with over a minute left in Game 2 in Detroit. After The Sweep, the local paper had him holding Lord Stanley above his head with the caption "There's No Dowding Him." The whole town was buzzing throughout the entire playoffs, rooting for the hometown kid to bring the Cup home. We all felt like we won it, knowing one of our own has accomplished the greatest thing in hockey. He has a State Championship, a NCAA Championship, and a Stanley Cup Championship. He's been a winner his whole career.
I was only seven in 1995, and just started to get into hockey (thanks to the previous year's run to the ECF) but this buzz around the community made me love it. Without Jim Dowd, I would probably just be a causal fan.
He played for ten teams in his career and is now retired. He's got an office job in the Devils organization now. Here's a good bio from USA Hockey Magazine. He's down so much for hockey in Brick and across Monmouth and Ocean Counties. He started the Shoot for the Stars Foundation, that helps children with special needs play hockey, most notably the Brick Stars "Special Need" Challengers Ice Hockey program. He runs a high school all star between Monmouth and Ocean Counties usually held in the summer where all proceeds go to this foundation.
So as you are watching nine hours of hockey on NBC and Versus (Here's the regional map for the first set of games today), remember your local hockey hero. Let us known in the comments who he/she is. Use this for an open thread for all the games today, Devils talk is obviously fine, but keep it hockey related. Thanks for reading - Happy Hockey Day in America!

Sorry for getting this up late – a period after the games started. Internet was goofy.

"Hockey Day in The States"...
…makes a bit more sense.

Marty Brodeur
Nuff said. But the big hockey game marketed in this Hockey Day in America is the Heritage Classic between Calgary and Montreal. 2 things strike me as odd:
1) Why is the big game for Hockey Day in America between 2 Canadian teams?
2) Shouldnt the Hertiage Classic be between 2 original six teams?
I dont know, makes sense to me, my hatred of Canadian Hockey Clubs factors in there I guess……Marty’s Better votes for Martin Brodeur as the Ultimates Hockey Hero, Legend of all time. Something tells me a few responses in here may be the same as mine.
I don’t know. That’s NHL marketing for you.
I think they did a good job with the early game match-ups (but even with Center Ice, you can only watch one of them). The big market teams are all on.

the first heritage classic was Habs at Oilers. Both the Oilers and Flames are early 70s teams. I think heritage refers to Canadian heritage (hockey) not hockey heritage (originals)

Even the logo for the Heritage Classic. A big red maple leaf – I mean that screams America!

5 out of 6 teams have played an outdoor game already… The only team who hasn’t is the rags, I could think of a good rival team for them…

Fyers and Rags are tied 1-1 early in the 2nd. Caps are up 1-0 on Buffalo almost halfway through the 2nd. Winhs and Wild are tied.

My favorite Player has got to be Scott Stevens, he’s a great defenseman and was just a nasty s.o.b on the ice.
Speaking of defense, the devils might have put out a waiver claim for Souray. I put a fan shot up of it.

I think that’s a just a rumor site. I’m really not comfortable with the Devils picking him up.

I feel so dirty...
I just cheered when the Flyers took the lead…
Aah!
I just did it again….
(just remember you need them to beat the Rags to help the Devs) I just keep repeating that in my head…

Boucher made three phenomenal savesn but got a knee to the helmet by one of his defenseman. He’s very slow to get up.

Boucher stays in net (why? he’s obviously hurt)
And now the Rags score 3-2 on lucky bounce

Rags are pounding the the net this period. Flyers are just sitting back. I really hate these teams

Legends
I can’t speak to local smalltown hockey legends, but I think John McMullen, Mickey Mouse, John Maclean, and Don Koharsky deserve a mention from the early years.

John McMullen is a great hero for NJ hockey. Except for that little debacle he had with the NJSEA and threatened to move the team to Nashville.

Best case scenario today
was achieved.
Buffalo lost, Rangers lost.

Chicago vs. Pittsburgh
I dont really care who wins, but I would find it entertaining if Chicago missed the playoffs.
I can watch anything that Doc is calling. If he called the Westminster Dog Show, I would watch it, find it interesting, and know tons of things about it.

I'd find it funnier
if Pittsburgh found a way to miss the playoffs. Which, hey, without Malkin and Crosby, could potentially (not really) happen.

Nah, they got enough results and even without Crosby and Malkin, they’re a good possession team along with being rather goony.

Yeah
It’s a bigger pipe dream then the Devils making it. Still, I can hope

Also if Pittsburgh missed everyone would go on and on about how good Crosby and Malkin are and how Pittsburgh is amazing they only missed cause of a concusion and it would never end. Now would you really want to have to listen to that in the small of hockey coverage we actually get from the media?

Not to interrupt to much
But Talking Red Episode 21 will be up here shortly. So if you see a new post, that’s why. Incidentally, it’ll also serve as an open thread for today’s games.

Jim Dowd
Hey Matt i grew up and still live in Toms River and trust me in ’95 Jim Dowd was wildly popular in TR as well. (for those who dont know TomsRiver borders Brick) So i clearly understand your pick……….but being a lifelong devils fan i have to go with Marty, i think his heroics over the past 18 years or so have been utterly breath-taking
I hate being late.
but I just had to add ole Detroit #1 to the list of Hockey Heros. I guess he’s not exactly local, but it’s hard to find guys with this kind of story anymore. Maybe that’s why I want the Devs to finish the most unlikely of playoff runs. Just not enough good story in sports anymore.
If you want a good read, Shutout: The Legend of Terry Sawchuk and Sawchuk: The troubles and triumphs of the World’s Greatest Goalie are both really good.
I died a little on the inside when Marty broke his record, but I guess it had to be broken someday, at least it was Marty.
