Josefson will stay in New Jersey, is this the right move?
Tom Gulitti posted an article earlier today that said Jacob Josefson will get to play the third line center against tampa and will have tedenby and pelley as his linemates. John wrote a wonderful article explaining the cons to this situation as he is about to reach the maximum allowable games before his elc kicks in for this year. I will explain a scenario where I think something positive could be gained from this.
If Josefson is only going to play limited minutes the rest of the year, or only play like three or four games and then get benched or sent back to albany, I say send him down now and save the year on his contract. This may not happen however, as in the article is seems that Jacques thinks Jacob has a very good skillset from what he saw when he played under John Maclean, and he is hopeful he will play like that for him. If Jacob is going to get considerable ice time, I would not be totally opposed to keeping him here. By considerable I mean averageing 10-12 minutes of even strength play a game, and at least 1 minute of pp and pk work each night. I think in this way he could improve his play in all situations of the game at the nhl level. I have nothing against the Albany coaching staff, but I also believe he will learn more under the tutelage of Jacques than he will from them. I do however question his playing on a line with pelley. I like him with Tedenby since they have played together before, but I think Zharkov might fit in better on that line. I do however think having Vladamir on the fourth line gives the team more of a balance of skill spread out over the third and fourth lines.
One final point I would like to make is that Lou would not have signed Jacob last summer if he did not consider he may have to resign him three years from then. Im sure Lou has considered that Jacobs contract will kick in soon, and if he were not okay with this, Jacob wouldnt have been called up in the first place. I think that combined with Lou wanted Josefson to learn under Jacques are the main reason he is going to play in place of the recently traded Jason Arnott.
So what says you? Are you okay with Jacob staying in New Jersey as long as he get considerable playing time? would you rather he stay in albany and play top line minutes?

I’d rather have him in Albany than have him play 20 games and burn a year off his ELC (and allow him to enter Free agency one year earlier)

while i do agree for the most part, he will be an rfa so the devils will have complete control over what happens with him in regards to where he signs. in two more years rolston, zubrus, white, salvador, clarkson, elias, and marty all come off the books. zajac does as well so he will probably be due a raise, but even if they kept all these players it would be for considerabley less than what there making now so they will have more than enough cap space to handle josefsons contract situation.

This. I also think it’s important for Josefson to get in some time learning from Lemaire in case he’s not back next season.

Are you sure the line of tedenby, josefson, pelley is going to be the 3rd line? Wouldnt the 3rd line be more efficient as clarkson, steckel, zharkov?

i think these two lines are going to be the third lines together
steckel’s when they want checking, josefsons’s when they want two-way ability

I’m not a fan, but it seems that Lou doesn’t want to gamble next year. By retaining Greene, it seems he wants to re-sign him. The team the Devils will ice tonight will basically be their team next year + Parise and maybe a different backup goalie.
Let’s not forget that Lou will possibly not be around when this current contract ends, and will almost certainly not be around when Josefson reaches UFA.
I too, am not a fan of Josefson playing in 20 games and the Devils losing a year of FA status. The best argument for keeping him (to me) would be him learning from Jacques. But, he can do that sitting onin the press box and practicing. He better be ready next season though, as I dont see Lemaire returning, nor do I see the Devils picking up any FA Centers with what we have on our roster already (Zajac, Elias/Zubrus, Steckel, Pelley). Get ready JJ, your time looks to be now.

And if he’s not ready next season, he can be traded and then the earlier year of UFA status is somebody else’s problem.

He played a good game tonight I think. Still got a long way to go of course but I think it says a lot if you can keep winning with a line like Zharkov, Josefson, Tedenby. Here’s my biggest reason I’m more than okay with it. Jacques Lemaire is currently the coach of the New Jersey Devils. Playoffs are still a pipe dream, but you can definitely see the future for the New Jersey Devils shining pretty bright right now. Especially that pass he had to Palmieri tonight. The kid’s gonna be good.
Question about his name...
I remember earlier this season, Doc had said Josefson doesn’t care how you pronounce it, but the correct way is “Yacob Yosefson” and not “Jacob Josefson”. I assumed Doc would go with the correct way, but he hasn’t been. Does anyone else remember this or am I crazy?

lol youre not crazy this did happen. in 2009 he also did an interview with matt loughlin where matt asks him the right way to say it and he says it doesnt matter because in english it is pronounced jacob josefson.
