Another week, another fresh set of games we need others to lose. Unfortunately we're rooting for a ton of road teams this week. Off we go!
Teams to root for in bold. (Record of teams we're rooting for: 3-4)
Tuesday:
Isles at Rags - Let's hope the Isles keep playing well this week as they have two big games for us. The Rags are clinging to that last spot for dear life and having the Devils replace them would be a dream come true.
Canes at Sabres - It seems that a ridiculous number of games have been ending after regulation of late. Hopefully this isn't one of them. (Update: Public opinion seems to be steering this one towards a toss-up, so when all else fails, root for someone to win in regulation)
Wednesday:
Leafs at Canes - The Leafs have cooled off and the Canes are ice cold of late, which is good news for the Devils. It's possible the Devils could jump both of these teams (as well as the Thrashers) by weeks end.
Thursday:
Flyers at Thrashers - Just when you think you can't hate the Flyers any more, they start tanking against every team you need them to beat. Don't be shocked if this is another loss.
Leafs at Panthers - As expected, the Panthers have fallen off after dismantling the team at the deadline, but they have a couple good wins of late; lets hope they continue that trend.
Friday:
Canadiens at Rags - Fashionista Sean Avery has added a new title to his list: nuisance, crass jerk, apparent Eskimo brother of Dion Phaneuf, and now, suit salesman. No relevant hockey point there, Avery just continues to be delightfully hateable.
Isles at Canes - The only team the Isles have lost to in their last six is the Devils (twice), so I'm optimistic they can do some work for us this week.
Saturday:
Thrashers at Sabres - The Thrashers produce an absolutely silly amount of three-point games. Twenty-five (!) to be exact.
Bruins at Leafs - Hopefully Zedeno Chara doesn't get nabbed by the fuzz at the Canadian border before the game, because I would prefer the B's won this one.
Sunday:
Rags at Penguins - SIDNEY CROSBY IS SKATING! Ring the church bells! The Messiah has returned! Scott Burnside's heart is all aflutter!
Predators at Sabres - The Preds are in the middle of the muck that is the West playoffs race, so they should be extra motivated to help out and provide a Buffalo loss for us.

Gotta root for Carolina tonight. Buffalo is hot, they are not. Plus, we play Buffalo again.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

plus, Carolina has 8 of their remaining 13 games at home. Need to focus on 8th, with 2 games-in-hand on the Rangers plus a game against, they’re going to be slightly easier to catch (not to mention more satisfying).

Buffalo can be the most help to the Devils. They play everybody the Devils have to pass at least once (Carolina twice). If Buffalo wins all those games, preferably in regulation, that’s one less win the Devils absolutely need to get themselves.

I see your point, but I would have to disagree with you on this. The Devils already control their own destiny with regard to the Leafs and Thrashers (games in hand and head-to-head games), so by the time Buffalo is playing them, we may have already passed them. I just want to keep all of these teams within reach and keep the point total to get into the playoffs at a minimum. That said, either outcome to this game isn’t particularly attractive anyway and I think the main thing we are rooting for is no overtime.
Disagree. Root for Buffalo.
The Devils can catch and pass the Hurricanes, and every loss they suffer helps accomplish that. They’re not going to catch Buffalo though.
I still don’t think catching Buffalo is out of the question. They are in the same spot as the Rags with one additional game to go. If they lose tonight, the chances of catching them and the Rags become identical.
However catching the Hurricanes becomes harder.
Buffalo winning makes the Devils job of reaching the top 8 easier.
I don’t have a game-by-game breakdown, but last time I checked, the Rangers and Sabres had the same amount of points with the Sabres having a game in hand. Both of them have the same target on their heads IMHO.
Carolina’s schedule plus their lack of play lately has got to have you hoping that they can cool Buffalo off.
There’s no prize for finishing 9th. There were two playoff spots up for grabs on the last day of the season last year too. I’d like to keep it that way.

It is easier to reach the Top 8 if it is plausible to catch both 7th and 8th. If you remove Buffalo from the equation, because their winning puts them out of reach, it becomes harder to make it into the playoff picture.
I’d rather be one of six teams chasing two spots than one of five teams chasing one spot. Five into one requires you to play exceedingly well and all of the other four to fall off the pace. Six into two gives you a little more room for error.

They really only need to tank 3 games more than the Devils lose through the end of the season (include tanking the game against the Devils). That is as long as Carolina tanks 2 more than the Devils lose, and Atlanta and Toronto tank 1 extra each.

Philly threw the Game. made sure to take 1 point and give atlanta the 2. They wanna make it chaotic down there and also stay just in the right spot to finish 1st or 2nd in the end so they can choose who they wanna play. They WANT Atlanta in, because they’d be a push over. You think philly wants to play the devils? They will do everything they can to avoid that outcome. Think about it..

I repeat: If the teams behind us catch up to us, that means we’re losing games and they’re winning. If we start losing games, this dream evaporates.

If they do, Florida and the Isles can’t catch us even if they keep winning. We wouldn’t need other teams to keep them off our backs.
Yeah, i guess i just have a different mindset for the season. it might be because the devils had such a bad first half of the season that i want any teams below us to continue to fail just to separate a point gap between them and us.
