Game 64 Preview: New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
The Time: 7:00 PM EST
The Broadcast: TV - MSG+(HD); Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils (28-31-4) vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins (37-21-7)
The Last Devils Game: On Wednesday night, the Devils hosted Tampa Bay in a weird game. While the Devils led in shots and in Corsi, both teams traded off good and bad shifts for the first 40 minutes. The Devils eventually took over in the third period, led by Ilya Kovalchuk who scored another awesome goal to win another game. The Devils won 2-1 and my recap of the game is here.
The Last Penguins Game: The Penguins were in the midst of a five game road trip and on Wednesday, they visited Toronto for their second consecutive game with the Leafs. Just like the first one, it was a close game and required time beyond regulation. However, they did not win this one. The Penguins suffered in overtime thanks to Mikhail Grabovski scoring in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 overtime loss. Frank D has this recap of the game at PensBurgh.
The Last Devils-Penguins Game: Back on January 20, the Devils hosted the Penguins. Both teams were feeling pretty good. The Penguins went into the game winning their last 3, while Devils were enjoying a 3-0-1 run in their previous four games. The Devils were the better team on the ice and straight up snared the Penguins. Jacques Lemaire out-coached Dan Bylsma; the Devils scored two quickly but never totally sat on the lead; and the only area where the Pens succeeded were in infractions, hitting Martin Brodeur, and dirty play. The Devils won 2-0 as their hotness rolled on. Here's my recap of the game. For the other side, Frank D had this short recap at PensBurgh.
The Goal: Keep your cool, Devils. The Penguins are still the league leaders in penalties (take your pick on the metric: 317 minors, 66 majors, 18.2 PIM/game, shorthanded 268 times), and they demonstrated that in the last Devils-Penguins game. Even beyond the four minors they took, there were all kinds of cross-checks, hooks, holds, and other fouling methods by the visitors. They were frustrated by the 1-2-2 then. Given that this is a team that hasn't won a game in regulation since February 4, I don't think they're feeling all that good right now. I fully expect them to get "gritty" again if things don't go their way. The Devils must stay calm and not retaliate. They did that on January 20 against the Pens, so it can be done. They should if only to avoid shooting themselves in the foot.
I have a few more thoughts on tonight's game after the jump. Please check out PensBurgh for any Pittsburgh analysis.
Without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, it's easy to assume that Pittsburgh is now a poor offensive team. Well, they aren't so bad at even strength. Based on numbers compiled at the beginning of the month by JLikens, which I organized for the division here. The Penguins were among the top teams in the league. JLikens has updated the even strength numbers near the end of February and Pittsburgh is on the right side of 50% by a good chunk across the board.
Basically, the Penguins problem of not having won a game within 60 minutes in nearly a month doesn't have to do with getting the puck forward. They've been quite good at that even without their superstars. They just need to sharpen up elsewhere. The Devils will have to do a lot of battling for pucks, which is a stickier issue given the opposition's tendency to get called - meaning they've been quite physical about it.
At least the Penguins are getting healthier beyond their aces. As Hooks Orpik noted in this FanShot prior to the Penguins' game against Toronto at PensBurgh, their roster is looking more like an actual NHL roster. Their acquisitions of James Neal and Alexei Kovalev do help on the wings. Neal has yet to register a point with their new team, but he should be better acclimated now and could cause some havok en route to getting that first mark. Kovalev does have a goal already with Pittsburgh, one of the five scored on February 26 in a 6-5 shootout win over Toronto.
According to the Sam Kasan's report at the team's official practice, the Penguins used the same lineup in practice on Thursday. I assume we'll see those same combinations this evening. Note that both Neal and Kovalev are on Pittsburgh's top line, so they really can't be ignored even if either hasn't "broken out" yet. It's going to be interesting to see what defensive pairing Jacques Lemaire uses against those lines. One could argue that their second line listed could be more dangerous with the production by Tyler Kennedy (leading Penguins forward in scoring among current active forwards - remember Neal has no points with Pittsburgh) and the talent of Jordan Staal. Not to mention the potential of literal danger by Matt Cooke.
Defenseman Matt Niskanen has more reason to smile, having scored his first goal and assist as a Penguin on Wednesday against Toronto. It bolsters an already strong defensive group that features Kris Letang, Paul Martin, and Zybnek Michalek. While the top two lines by the Devils (eventually) looked strong against Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh's six defensemen will be a more difficult challenge. Especially Letang (8 G, 38 A), since he's been so successful in both ends of the rink.
Goaltending is up in the air as of this writing. I would guess Marc-Andre Fleury would be in net, since he's been regularly starting for the Penguins - including Wednesday's game in Toronto. He's been fairly good for the Penguins to say the least. While he can get exposed when he tries to play the puck, I hope the Devils force him to go laterally when possible. Fleury has the ability to make some rather acrobatic stops, but in general sliding saves are difficult and have an element of "please, please, please let me get a piece of this" to it. If Fleury is over-doing it early, then it's something the Devils offense can try and exploit.
The Devils had the day off on Thursday, as reported here by Tom Gulitti. It's great that Zach Parise is skating, but he isn't going to be playing for a while yet, so he's a non-factor for tonight. If I were to guess, I would think Martin Brodeur would be starting again. Nothing in his last two starts would suggest he shouldn't. If there's any changes to New Jersey's lineup, it could be Jacob Josefson sitting for Adam Mair. Josefson has now played 9 games this season. One more game kicks in his contract for this season. For contractual and developmental reasons, he really should be in Albany now so he can get prime minutes, play in all situations, and have his contract slide to next season. Playing him tonight would be total folly, regardless of how much Lemaire liked him per this post-Lightning-game post by Gulitti. I hope Devils management (read: Lou) understands and makes the move on Friday.
With the lack of Devils news, I want to go back to Sam Kasan's report at the Penguins' official website. Specifically this quote by Penguins' head coach Dan Bylsma:
On how to handle Kovalchuk:
Well, special teams again. Minimizing the opportunities there. (It's) just one game from us. We would like to try to get certain D pairs out against him and see Jordan Staal in situations where (he plays against Kovalchuk). It’ll be tougher to do on the road, and Jacques is a guy that tries to match up and get the matchups he wants, so it will be tough. But in certain circumstances, we want to make sure Jordan’s out there on the ice to prevent possibly affecting his line and Kovalchuk.
First, the Devils' power play has been iffy at best. Sure, handing a team power play after power play is a bad idea. And it should be a constant source of frustration for Mr. Bylsma since his team takes it too far too often and spends relative bucket-loads of minutes in the penalty box. Sure, Kovalchuk is to be feared on the power play for his slapshot alone. If I'm concerned about Kovalchuk, the Devils' power play should not be coming to mind. If anything, it should be straight up even strength play that should be prioritized.
Second, why, why, why, why, why, why did Bylsma spell out in the press what he wants to do about Kovalchuk?
Do recall that Kovalchuk, Travis Zajac, and Nick Palmieri rolled over Vincent Lecavalier and his linemates on Wednesday. Kovalchuk had 8 shots alone in that game. The guy had a 12-game point streak snapped on Sunday and in his next game, he puts up an assist and the game winning goal. In the last Pittsburgh-New Jersey game, the Devils had a lead for a majority of the game and Kovalchuk only finished a -2 - albeit without Staal. Staal's linemates certainly won't bug him. He's so hot right now. Why announce who will go up against him? Why give him a chance to read up on Staal? Why give Patrik Elias, Brian Rolston, and Dainius Zubrus something to look forward to since they won't be seeing Staal? Why give the Devils coaches something tangible to adjust their gameplan going into tonight's game? Why give any public clue on what to do about Kovalchuk? Why answer that question? Why did he not remember on January 20, his team looked like snails because they couldn't figure out a 1-2-2 more than whatever Kovalchuk did?
Sure, Bylsma can (and probably should) change his mind on how to handle Kovalchuk-Zajac-Palmieri before this game or during the game. Especially if that line is looking great or the Elias line smashes through Pittsburgh's other lines. That's something to watch for from either team's perspective. Those match-ups will be key, particularly if Bylsma does follow what he said out-loud in front of a microphone and stick Staal (a center) against Kovalchuk (a wing). As will be New Jersey maintaining a level head if/when Pittsburgh goes dirty.
How do you think tonight's game will go? What do you think of a Staal vs. Kovalchuk match-up? What else should the Devils be concerned about tonight's game? Should Penguins fans bring pillows to their TV, sports bar, or the game because they seem so tired when their team falters? Please leave your answers and other thoughts on tonight's game in the comments. If you have any news updates, please feel free to add them in the comments as long as you provide a link to the source. Let's go, Devils!

The Devils under Lemaire are 7-0 against Dan Bylsma’s Penguins. You’d have to think that he’ll eventually figure out how to beat us. Hopefully not tonight though.
My Goal for the Game
Great preview John. Ill be at this one so ill try and swing by and say hello if i get there early. While your goal is more realistic, Ive come up with one that I think is more appropriate. The Devils needs to absolutely destroy the Penguins in this game. I was at the game on columbus day when the devils only had 15 skaters dressed. The Penguins barely one that game, and it was the first timr they had beaten the Devils in the previous 7 tries and their fans had the audacity to chant “You cant beat us!!” ive never felt more aggravated by another fan base, and this is coming from someone who goes to every devils-rangers game. We chanted that last March, but we went 6-0 against them for the year. They beat us once, and we were undermanned. Now they are withouth their top two stars, and i hope we completely steam roll them.
also im going to try as hard as i can tonight to make sure paul martin gets booed right out of the freaking building. I dont care if he doesnt deserve it as much as other players do(see gomez, scott) itll be a nice receipt for him saying that the devils were “going in the right direction” when he decided to sign elsewhere.
Thanks for the preview
The Devils should be prudent with a possible Kovy-dependence… Wonderful to see Kovy playing at his very best, but it’s still a team game, I hope the Zubie line will show up tonight, Elias especially, we’ve to score more goals/Game.
I Think It's Like Moose
So long as Kovy’s hot, ride him, double-shift him, give him PP minutes. When he cools a bit (‘cause he gets the schnide or just needs rest), cut down his ice time. But what a great and unique concern for us to have: Too much offense from one scorer! I have also thought of the days we had a balanced attack with multiple players with 20 goals a piece, but this is uncharted territory for the team. Jacques has to do what gives them the best chance to win. Five game-winning goals in 11 games seems bear out his confidence. Any one of those shifts, if Kovy is riding the pine, we maybe don’t get the win.

I think you’ve touched on the reason that Kovalchuk is just so valuable.
If your team has many, balanced, talented scorers… then the threat of a premier player like Kovalchuk opens lanes for the great play of others. But if the other talent is lacking or slumping, Kovalchuck’s natural talent may still continue to shine despite the slumping around him.
Take his line alone: Kovy-Zajac-Palmieri. Obviously, he is the difference maker there, but in a very short stint, Palmieri has proven he has a good vision for the puck, is willing to fight in the corners, and make plays directly in front of the goaltender where he’s most likely to get smacked around. He reminds me of Parise with a little more height and muscle. Also, Zajac is a more than competent centerman who scored about 20 or so in recent years. No slouch.
If you double-up on Kovy, you leave the ice open for the other two to snake you. Or, Kovy will turn you into (red, white, and blue) road cones like he did in the last Devils-Rangers game.

Atleast it rhymed. haha
I agree. The Devs need to annihilate someone. All this 1-0 and 2-1 stuff isn’t scaring anyone. And it’s sure as hell killing me. My doctor even had the balls to suggest I lay off the hockey for a while to help my bloodpressure. Now I gotta find a new doctor. Would it kill these guys to scroe 3 or 4 goals in a game sometime soon?

Ranger gane a great example why annihilating someone means nothing
I see what you saying about getting a flurry of offense in a particular game, but the Devs are not goingto do that. They need to play it safe and be very smart defensively and to do that when it is a close game they need to play it safe because they need 2 pts every single game more than alot of other teams right now.
The Rags beat the Caps 6-0 a few nights ago and scored a total of 4 goals in their next 3 games. I will take 1 goal wins with getting the 2 points anyday. 18-2-2 in the last 22 games, that in itself should scare opponents.

Disagree
One of the most common traits of this team when it is winning are close one goal games. They are exciting and usually end up well for the Devils.
Also it makes me nervous when we start taking winning for granted. Just win. Don’t worry about how many goals we score or how many goals they score. JUST WIN.
Kovy’s energy was awesome last week and really charged everyone up. The best we can do is support this team and its players.

Im not picky at this point. I’ll settle for simply score more goals then the opposition.
In Lou We Trust!! (but that doesn't mean we don't wonder sometimes...)
I’m with you guys, long as they win…but my ticker can’t take much more of the whole “grab a one goal lead with 7 minutes left and white-knuckle it till the buzzer.” At least they kept attacking last game.

Funny enough, I asked Burnside this today:
Mike (NJ)
Hey there Mr. Burnside. Over the past few months there seems to be a lot of confusion on how you feel about the NJ Devils. Do you hate them as much as every comment you drop about them eludes or are you just not apt at clearly stating how you feel? Please let me know, professionally, how you feel about the NJ Devils entire season and there abilities leading into next season. Thanks!
Scott Burnside (4:13 PM)
Mike; Thanks for the question. I think it’s convenient for fans to want to slot people into a ‘pro’ or ‘con’ camp. The fact is it’s a lot more complex than that. Do I have some sort of long-standing beef with the franchise? Did I fall out of the crib onto a Devils’ logo? No. Do I take issue with things that I think may be misguided or counterproductive? Sure. As I do with every other team. Didn’t like the handling of the Kovalchuk signing. Still don’t. Have the Devils played their brains out the past two months? Sure have. If they make the playoffs will we laud them for one of the miracle comebacks of all time? For sure. Will we pick them to lose in the first round? Of course.

Odd, he fails to mention that his dislike has been evident long before Kovalchuk came to town.
Anyway, my money is on the falling out of the crib thing. It would explain both his hatred of the team and his writing like a man with a head injury.
He’s just bringing it up now as some kind of random explanation to dismiss in an attempt to throw us off the trail.
Haha, now that you mention it, the crib scenario does seem to be the most likely. Funny part is, I didn’t expect him to answer the question. I tried to write it in a way where it wasn’t insulting enough so that he would, but it’s still evident that I think he’s a terrible writer: “…or are you just not apt at clearly stating how you feel?” He took the bait :p.
So now the new target is our hated rivals.
That are 10 points ahead of us and we have 3 games in hand.
In Lou We Trust!! (but that doesn't mean we don't wonder sometimes...)
Yeah, I smiled. I’ll admit it.
I think that’s temporary. The Sabres and Leafs are looking pretty damned good lately, and seem the favs to make it to 7 and 8. So, while leaping the Rangers is definitely the goal, I don’t think it’ll turn out to be the last one the Devs have to achieve to complete the Miracle of 2011.
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? - Il Duce
I think you are saying...
That in a few weeks, the Rangers will have slipped from 8th anyway.
So, if the Devils are mathematically excluded from the Playoffs, at least they can beat the Rangers in their final game and maybe pass them in the standings as well.
If both teams are out of the playoffs, then the Devils would have gone out with a fiery, thunderous tumult… not a choke, gasp, and a whimper.
I think so too.
but I’m sleepy.
Beating the Rags is ALWAYS the goal. And I don’t think the Rangers will have either of the playoff spots that we’re trying to abscond with at the end of the season.
I’m pretty sure the Devs have already avoided the choke and whimper…even going .500 and not getting close to the playoffs will mean one hell of a second half.
But F that man. I spent my childhood believing that wrestling was real. I beleived in Santa until I was way too old to legitimately do so. I believed in the limitless wealth promised by the .com market boom. I beleived that doing the right thing all the time was the way to go through life happy, safe and secure. I’m tired of believing in stuff that isn’t true. I believe in this one. One game a time. Win this mother out, one game at a time.
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? - Il Duce
Gotcha.
The Devils have definitely avoided the whimper. The gasping I was referring to was coming from across the Hudson…
But, you’re right. Finishing of the second half respectably wouldn’t do it for me, either.
Playing one-game-at-time and landing above 90 points and making the Playoffs… holy christ. If indeed that happened, it would truly be the greatest sporting comeback of all time. And, no matter what result after the Playoffs begin, it would be great than even the Miracle on Ice or Messier’s alleged “guarantee” from Game 6… er, how many years ago you lurking Rangers’ fans? (FYI, we’re warming up the “ninety-four” chant).
There is really only one way to go through life happy, safe, and secure. And that way is the last way you will ever choose. Grasping at hope, or God, or happiness, or love may be enough. Actually grasping onto one of those… you would never let go.
Aside from the spiritual foundation of such principles, they also have a practical analogue in hockey, where every team and every player has to rise above his most recent failure and continue grasping at that hope that the next play, the next shift, or the next game will be the place to “better” his performance.
The Devils play with such tenacity and focus that they could actually make it. Incidentally, this is a message Newark has been trying to hang on to for two generations.
wait, wrestling isn't real?
Then that’s the darned best CGI I’ve ever seen. How come they don’t use that technology in movies? Does the WWE (It used to be WWF, is the WWD next?) have a patent or something?

Mid-day Updates
Congratulations to David Clarkson and his wife: they had a baby girl today, McKinnley.
Clarkson didn’t participate in the morning skate so here were the lines; he is expected to play however, Marty will start, and Kovy was late to a meeting but enjoyed a laugh with Lemaire:
The players on the ice for the morning skate today:
Forwards: llya Kovalchuk-Travis Zajac-Nick Palmieri; Brian Rolston-Patrik Elias-Dainius Zubrus; Rod Pelley-Dave Steckel-Adam Mair; Vladimir Zharkov-Jacob Josefson-Mattias Tedenby.
Defensemen:Colin White-Anton Volchenkov; Henrik Tallinder-Mark Fayne; Anssi Salmela-Andy Greene; Mark Fraser (extra).
Goaltenders: Martin Brodeur, Johan Hedberg.
Steckel was the one who collided with Crosby during the Winter Classic and (even though he played in a game after that and was checked into the boards hard) some Pens (Mike Rupp) are still bitter about it. Steckel apologized for the non-malice collision; so who knows what to expect from the dirty Pens. Johnson will start.

If Crosby was concussed after the Steckel hit then it’s the Pens training staff’s fault for him being out so long. If he doesn’t play that next game he probably would have been back sooner

They already
met again in February. If the Pens wanted to get Steckel back for that, they would have done so in that game.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
let's mop the floor, tonite
Because hey, why not?
Back in January, the Devils were outscoring their opponents and winning with games over 3 or more goals. In February, it was a lot more one-goal games. (I don’t know where I got this info, but someone posted it the other day).
So, how about a nice, comfortable 4-0 blowout to reward the Devils – AND US – for our good behavior? They’ve earned it. We’ve earned it. Brodeur and Moose have both earned it. God knows Lemaire and Lamoriello have earned it.
Hell, even Steckel earned it. That fella was on his way to the Playoffs and he’s been in good spirits since landing.
Is it too late
to recall PL3 to take Matt Cooke out of the game early? I’m pretty sure he’d be able to goad him into doing something stupid to get a game misconduct (Cooke getting the GM that is).
