2011 NCAA Free Agent Watch And Why I Want The New Jersey Devils To Sign Chay Genoway

A few months ago I put together a post on unrestricted free agents that will be available after the NCAA Hockey season ends.  (You can view the original post here)

Unrestricted free agents from the college ranks serve as a 'second chance'.  For teams like the Devils who have struggled in recent years during the entry draft, signing the right college players can fill gaps in your organization that should have been filled during the draft.  For a number of reasons, players like John Madden, Andy Greene, and Matt Taormina went undrafted and were available for anyone to sign after they graduated college.  Some players, like Taormina, sign a professional tryout contract with an AHL or ECHL club.  Others, like Bobby Butler of Ottawa, get signed to a entry level contract with a nice signing bonus. (contract details here)

While the Devils do have a number of tough RFA/UFA decisions to make in the off-season, that shouldn't prevent them from being active in the market of players that become available from the college ranks.  After the jump I list some of the players I had mentioned that will be available in a month or two (or sooner) that I think the Devils should take a chance on.

Of course as I write this, Taylor Fedun has already signed with the Edmonton Oilers. Fedun was playing locally in Princeton and I am surprised the Devils never had him at one of their development camps.

Fedun's signing is a reminder on how quickly a college player can be signed once his season ends. Last year, Bobby Butler's college season ended on March 26th and 3 days later he was signed by the Senators.

Who will be the next player to sign?  It's likely to be Chase Polacek whose team just lost to Colgate in the ECAC quarterfinals.  He might be holding out in the event that RPI earns a bid to the Frozen Four, but I would think that is unlikely to happen.

There should also be a few signings early next week as teams are eliminated from their respective conference playoffs and don't have viable shots at the Frozen Four tournament.  Names to look out for next are Tommy Grant of Alaska-Anchorage and Matt Read of Bemidji State.

There are a number of talented players that will be available once their college season ends but to me the game changer is Chay Genoway, a defenseman from North Dakota (Genoway's statistics are below).

Granted a second senior season by the NCAA due to a vicious hit that resulted in a concussion and knocked him out of commission for the majority of last year, Genoway bounced back to put up 26 points in the 29 games he played in this year.  Genoway recently has returned to action after missing time due to a lower body injury and you should hear his name plenty of times in the next month during the WCHA playoffs and the Frozen Four tournament.

Despite the time missed he still is the Sioux's leading scorer among defensemen and is tied for second among all players with 14 power play points.  He has 76 shots on goal so far this year (2.6 per game) and 27 of those shots have come on the power play.  Both shot totals lead the team among defenseman.

Some concerns associated with Genoway include his size (listed at 5'9 and 177 lbs) and his injury history.   Plus, he is older than the typical college senior at age 24, so many feel he doesn't have more room to develop.  Since he has shown no ill-effects from the injury that ended his season last year your main concern would then be his size and if his body can take the toll of an AHL/NHL season.  Every player is different and I refuse to say a player isn't going to be a viable option because of his size.  Look at top 2011 draft prospect Rocco Grimaldi. He's 5'6!  With his skating ability Genoway should be able to compete at the NHL level.

That said, there are no concerns about his on-ice ability.   Having played initially at Shattuck-St. Mary's High School (where Zach Parise played) and then for the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL, Genoway has been a mainstay on the blueline for the Fighting Sioux.  He skates well, can quarterback a power play and plays solid in his own end.  In fact, most of the commentary I have read on him praises his defensive abilities more than most of his other qualities.

I have said this before, but it is worth repeating.  The day the Sioux season ends, I would have Travis Zajac, Zach Parise and even Darcy Zajac calling him non-stop to sell him on playing in New Jersey.

Is he worth the 'risk'?  Well what exactly is the risk?  A 3 year entry level contract committment of $160,000 a year (AHL salary plus a likely signing bonus) is certainly worth the opportunity to sign a player with Genoway's talents.  (If he is NHL-bound he would probably have cap hit/earnings of roughly $1MM.)

If he doesn't work out he provides a good asset to the organization at the AHL level.  Concerned about the $160,000 a year commitment?  That's actually less than the Devils wasted on Andrew Peters contract last year.   Plus, a signing of a player like Genoway -if it works out-helps lessen the blow from not having a first round pick in 2007.

To me the upside is worth the nominal risk.  While I wouldn't mind the Devils signing a Paul Thompson or Tommy Grant, I think their focus should be on Genoway.

Here is a highlight video that was put together in support of Genoway’s Hobey Baker Award candidacy.

Ufa_goalies_medium

The Devils should also look at some of the collegiante goaltenders (listed above) whose college careers are ending.  With Jeff Frazee's inconsistent play at Albany and the Vesa Toskala clones that play for Trenton, the Devils need some fresh goaltenders in their system.  It's likely that you can sign any of the above goalies to a minor league contract to play in the ECHL and work their way up from there.   A goalie who has played through the tough competition that the NCAA provides might even be able to step in and be a backup at the AHL level.   A goaltender signing  would also provide competition to Maxime Clermont who would be eligible to start playing in the Devils organization next year (technically he could play this year if he was signed).

The names above are just some to keep your eyes on.  The only one who was ever ranked by Central Scouting was John Muse who was ranked 22nd in the North American Goaltender draft rankings of 2007. They represent accomplished goalies (with NHL size) in the NCAA ranks who are playing for top tier programs. Whether it's from the group above or somewhere else, the Devils do need to refresh the goaltending depth in the organization.

Final Thoughts:

As you can tell I really would like for the Devils to sign Genoway.  But if they don't sign him, they need to be active in this new market of players that will become available.  If you watched last night's Devils and Ottawa Senators game you saw how often Bobby Butler was mentioned by the announcers.  The Devils need this type of talent infusion to their organization to make up for lackluster drafts.  Weak drafts have started to catch up to the Devils but they can make amends on those poor selections by taking a chance on some of the top talent in the NCAA.

I know that David Conte has scouted North Dakota games to check out Devils prospect Derek Rodwell, so if he believes Genoway has NHL talent, it has been communicated to the organization.  If Conte believe this (and I am sure he does), then I implore the Devils to sign him.  The risk is minimal.  His career path and his scholastic accolades seem to make him a perfect 'Devil' type of player.  So, Lou Lamoriello if you are reading this (which I doubt that you are) let's bring another Fighting Sioux player to New Jersey.  The Devils have already struck gold with Sioux alumni Parise and Zajac. Why not one more? Ever hear of the saying that good things come in threes?

If we do go after him, you think having Zajac and Parise will help? I am also thinking he may get more than one offer.

I can’t see why it would hurt. I think having Darcy Zajac in the organization might help more since he just recently played with him at UND. I don’t think he will sign because Darcy’s here (there are plenty of other UND alums around other teams) but I having those former Sioux players certainly doesnt hurt.

The Devils have exactly 2 spots open on their reserve list, per CapGeek. If the Devils sign Genoway, then a RFA in Albany is definitely walking this summer. Then again, that may be exactly why the Devils would sign him.

If they sign him after 3/1 the team/player has the option as to what year to start the contract. Since UND’s season will likely end late March, he can be signed and his contract would be applicable for 2011-12 and he would count against the 50 person limit for next year. Mike Hoeffel also does not have to be signed when Minnesota’s season ends. Drafted players whose college career is over can be signed up until 8/1. That said, I think the Devils will be ok with the 50 man limit.

Lou might not be reading, but I’m guessing someone on his staff keeps tabs here.

And Albany RFAs, yeah one or more are walking even without using up more reserve list spots.

From you description, this guy reminds me of Brian Rafalski. Incredibly skilled but passed on by teams because of his [lack of] size. Again, signing him isn’t going to hurt. Especially because if they get Genoway, he’d definitely make up for the loss of the 2nd rounder lost in the Arnott trade with Nashville.

That and maybe grab an undrafted goalie. Could use some goaltending depth with the impending departure of Brodeur. Better have a backup plan than hitting the panic button and ending up with the next Toskala or LeClaire.

I don’t know, the Devils could sign an undrafted FA goalie and he could easily turn into the next Toskala or LeClaire. Goaltending prospects are very iffy by their nature.

Yeah. that’s true. Look at all the expectations for Jeff Glass and Justin Pogge, and where they’ve ended up. Glass is in the KHL and Pogge’s bounced around the AHL.

Luckily an undrafted goalie FA won’t have a huge price tag and would not need to be signed to an NHL contract (unless he was realy good). Clermont might fill this role next year, but I think the team needs to have fresh blood in the system. You can have one ECHL/AHL guy like Caruso, but they have too many of them behind Frazee right now.

The Devils might want Genoway, but I don’t think Genoway would want New Jersey. The Devils have a very similar player in Matt Taormina. If I’m Genoway’s agent, I am looking for teams with more openings on their NHL backline – he’s 24, and he’s UFA in 2014.

Goalies

I’ve seen John Muse play. Yes he’s won two national championships but I don’t know why. Fights the puck a lot in the games I’ve seen him. Have not been entirely impressed. Rondeau’s actually been one of the better ECAC goalies this year, usually not Yale’s forte. Keith Kinkaid at Union might also be a prospect to make the trip down the road to the TUC once his season ends, though the way Union’s playing, that’ll be a while.

A bit scattershot with my thoughts here, but bear with me.

Regarding Chase Polacek and RPI, that’s a team sitting squarely on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, right now, and not on the good side of said bubble. According to the current PairWise Rankings, RPI is tied for 16th, only they don’t have the tie-break with Boston University. Considering that conference tournaments often have teams “play their way in” rather than the other way around, it’s probably safe to say RPI isn’t going to make the field…. but stranger things have happened.

(For those of you unfamiailar with the concept of PairWise Rankings, that’s how the NCAA selects and seeds their hockey tournament after the automatic berths are out of the way. Unlike many of the other sports, there is no “selection committee” that can judge based on selective and subjective criteria. It’s all done by a straightforward algorithm — explained here.)

Chay Genoway’s lack of size scares me a considerable deal, all the more because he is a defenseman. A highly successful strategy is for teams to dump the puck in and pound away at those defenders, especially come the post-season. I don’t know that Genoway would be able to stand up to that sort of repeated physical punishment, and I’m not sure I wish to take that risk.

Taking the bigger picture, I don’t know that the Devils have a realistic shot to sign any of the “big name” college UFAs. The way I see it, many of them are going to look for some combination of immediate opportunity at the NHL level, money, and long-term chances within a particular system. And to be blunt, I don’t know how much of that is available in Newark.

I can’t see any scenario wherein a college UFA is going to get a chance to jump straight to the Devils this year. For that matter, there wouldn’t be much opportunity with either Albany or Trenton, as neither team appears very likely to make the playoffs.

I don’t see the Devils as a free-spending team to try and get college UFAs by out-bidding other teams (particularly those with fat wallets). Nor do I see the Devils being able to play a prestige/cachet card to attract prospects.

As for the longer term, the Devils have a tendency to bring along prospects very slowly. I don’t know how well that would play with some of these guys who are hoping for a more immediate chance to play NHL minutes. Past that, you’re looking at a veteran-laden team (all the rookies being introduced this season notwithstanding) that will likely have limited openings in the premium slots (Top 2 lines, Top 4 D-men) for the next few seasons barring something dramatic happening.

I think the best shot the Devils might have to poach some of the “upper tier” college UFAs would be to go after a goalie. Marty is getting long in the tooth, Hedberg is no spring chicken, and there isn’t an heir apparant anywhere in the system. A kid coming from college would have the same opportunities as Frazee or one of last year’s draft picks to make his case…. and considering the salary cap situation, he might be preferable to trying to bring in another guy from another NHL franchise.

can you name prospects in the last 5 years who’ve been brought along ‘very slowly’? 10? the idea that the devils bring their prospects along ‘slowly’ is an ancient myth. the first year NA pros who’ve made the team out of camp since 2000 – gomez, rafalski, salomonsson, hale, martin, zajac, oduya. i agree the devils probably won’t get upper tier guys, but they have 5 undrafted free agents on their roster right now. i think they’ve established a fine reputation in that regard.

None of these are particularly recent. Nor do I think any of them are comparable cases, especially not to an undrafted collegiate free agent. Gomez and Zajac and Hale were all first-round draft picks. Paul Martin was a second-round pick (admittedly, the fourth of four the Devils had that year, but still). Brian Rafalski played several years in Europe before coming across (and was branded “the best player not in the NHL at the time of his signing”), as did Johnny Oduya (after being drafted by Washington but never signing with them).

Perhaps “very slowly” is an overstatement, but I’d still consider the Devils to be a team that takes its time with prospects. Admittedly, this might be as much a reflection of not drafting high — and therefore not having players who can make the jump directly to the NHL at age 18 — than a judgment on the individual players.

Having five undrafted free agents on their roster would be a better statement of their ability to find “diamonds in the rough”. Without going through other NHL rosters in detail, I couldn’t speak as to whether having five is “normal” or not. I’m not sure it makes a reputation one way or another.

i didn’t bother including urbom, but he was on the team’s opening night roster this year. josefson and tedenby are 1st year NA pros and they are with the team. ditto mark fayne. salomonsson was a 1st year NA pro. brian gionta was a 1st year pro. salmela made the team as a 1st year pro. greene eventually made the team as a 1st year pro, and it was theorized that the only reason he hadn’t made the team earlier was his contract and the team’s salary cap problem. i can go on and on.

the devils’ reputation for bringing prospects along slowly is based in the mid 90s when the devils just had a ridiculous amount of talent in their system. even then, they had petr sykora in the nhl as an 18 year old. still, since then, they have not hesitated to put young players into the NHL when they deem it appropriate.

Without going through other NHL rosters in detail, I couldn’t speak as to whether having five is "normal" or not. I’m not sure it makes a reputation one way or another.

it’s by far the most in the NHL, last time i checked. i don’t think any team had as many as 3.

Money isn’t really a concern because everyone would be playing by the ELC rules since he is still 24. As for opportunity, the only 3 definites you have blocking someone are Tallinder, Volchenkov and White. Greene and Salvador are questionable at best and Fayne/Taormina have shown promise but are by no means guaranteed NHL playing time. At the AHL level the only prospect who would be ahead of him (and not by that much) would be Urbom since he would have a year in the AHL already.

If anything I think the Devils have rushed too many prospects this year. Some of it was because of injury, but I think Josefson/Urbom could have used some time in the AHL before given roster spots.

He’s small but so is Taormina. Depending on what website you look at they are roughly the
same size.

I think this is a needlessly grim portrayal of NJ’s defensive depth. Fayne and Taormina are not guaranteed spots, but Fayne is playing some very impressive hockey, and Taormina showed something when he was in. Someone like Genoway should be demanding an NHL spot – he’s 24, and to maximize his earning potential/UFA options, he needs to go where he’s going to get ice time. That’s just not likely to be New Jersey, not with Corrente and Taormina being waiver-eligible.
