A Quick Overview of the Impending Free Agents of the New Jersey Devils for 2011
While the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs begin tonight, this is the third day of the 2011 offseason of the New Jersey Devils. Last night was a reason for celebration, as the Devils won the 2011 NHL draft lottery and have moved up in the first round to draft 4th overall. As exciting as it is to have a great shot to get a great prospect, I want to turn attention to the other main feature of the offseason: free agency.
Every team in the league, from the Stanley Cup winners to the 30th-place dwellers, has to answer difficult questions with their roster. Here are a couple that come to mind: Which restricted free agents do they re-sign, and for what terms? Who among impending unrestricted free agents will walk on July 1? What needs must be addressed by the open market and what can be addressed from within? How do they manage their salary cap for the upcoming 2011-12 season?
Even though it's still April, you can believe the Devils are considering of these questions right now. Assuming the salary cap does rise to $62.2 million for next season as reported here by James O'Brien at ProHockeyTalk, the Devils will have approximately $10 million in cap space to re-sign impending free agents and to acquire available players after July 1. According to CapGeek's salary chart, the Devils have 17 players under contract on their NHL roster. The Devils don't have to sign too many players, but considering who's up for new contracts, they could stand to add a few.
Today, I want to give a quick overview of each impending free agent after the jump. I did something like this last season, though I will be organizing this one a bit differently. As a point of clarification, this is not meant to be a final decision on what I think the Devils should do with each impending free agent. This is just a gut-reaction, a brief thought over who I want to stay in the organization, who I wouldn't mind stays in the organization, and who I wouldn't mind going elsewhere. More detailed analysis will come later in the offseason. Unfortunately, we have a lot of a time for it now.
The Current Situation as of April 13, 2011Per CapGeek's team chart, the Devils have 11 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goaltender on their NHL roster. Combined, they take up $52,177,500 in salary. According to their reserve list, 30 spots on their 50-man reserve limit are taken up. The team has 10 impending restricted free agents (RFAs) and 11 impending unrestricted free agents (UFAs). The Devils cannot just re-sign everyone available, as that will violate the limit on the reserve list. That should be fine since they really shouldn't just re-sign everyone.
Note: All of the following salary information comes from CapGeek.
Non NHL-Roster Impending Restricted Free Agents
The Devils have four non-NHL roster impending RFAs for this summer: forward Alexander Vasyunov (2010-11 NHL Salary: $850,000); goaltender Jeff Frazee ($541,667); forward Nathan Perkovich ($515,000); forward Steve Zalewski ($500,000). All are on two-way contracts; only Zalewski is not coming off of an entry level contract.
I can see the Devils retaining all four of these players, though they may be qualified just to stay in Albany. Vasyunov was the only one who played in the NHL last season. He got 18 games, scored 1 goal, got 4 assists, and played an average of 11:28. Vasyunov didn't look completely out of place, but he wasn't particularly impressive. Therefore, he could be stuck in the numbers game at forward at training camp in the fall.
It's unclear whether or not Frazee has a future in New Jersey as a goaltender. While he suffered from injuries last season, he's turning 24 in May and who knows if he'll be anything more than an AHL goalie at this point. Perkovich played his second season of pro hockey with Albany, where he may remain to bolster that roster. Zalewski was acquired in a trade with San Jose. He has largely been an AHL player in his career and if he doesn't mind that, he could help bolster the Albany roster. Though, Tom would be a better judge on that front.
I wouldn't mind seeing all of them retained, but I wouldn't get too attached to them on a long-term basis.
Non NHL-Roster Impending Unrestricted Free Agents
The Devils have seven impending UFAs not on New Jersey's roster: defenseman Tyler Eckford (2010-11 NHL Salary: $550,000); forward Brad Mills ($505,000); defenseman Olivier Magnan ($500,000); forward Tim Sestito ($500,000); goaltender Mike McKenna ($500,000); forward Chad Wiseman ($500,000); and defenseman Rob Davison ($500,000). All were on two-way contracts except for Davison, who was on a one-way deal.
Due to the Devils' injury woes in the first half of the season, most of these players got some time in the NHL. Eckford, Mills, Magnan, Sestito, and McKenna all played at least one game. I don't think any of them are NHL-quality players. Eckford and Magnan did little on defense. McKenna got one game based on a "gut feeling" from John MacLean. While he was OK, there was no reason to think he could move up in the system. Sestito (36 games, 2 assists) lasted the longest and didn't bring much to the proverbial table. The only one among them who looked intriguing to me was Mills but he doesn't seem to be much more than a banger with a cool last name (take him...to the Mills). I wouldn't expect any of these guys to at least get two-way deals unless it's the only way they'll remain in the organization and the Devils want to keep them.
That said, I don't think most of these guys will return. Eckford, Magnan-Grenier, and Davison don't have a real future with New Jersey and I can only see Davison sticking around as a veteran depth player. Physical players are readily available and I question whether Albany needs Mills all that much. I could see two of Sestito, McKenna and Wiseman re-signed, but only to really play for Albany. All three are veterans and can possibly help the AHL affiliate to be more successful next season. Wiseman was productive with Albany; Sestito could be useful in a checking role; and McKenna could do better in a split role with Frazee. But if either of them (or all of them) don't return, I wouldn't be too torn up about it. Wiseman has been an AHL journeyman, while McKenna and/or Sestito may want to try his luck cracking into the NHL with a different organization. Again, Tom would be a better appraiser of what Albany needs to not be a last place team next season in the A.
NHL-Roster Impending Restricted Free Agents
The Devils have six impending RFAs currently on their NHL roster: forward Zach Parise (2010-11 NHL Salary: $5,000,000); forward Vladimir Zharkov ($610,000); defenseman Anssi Salmela ($625,000); defenseman Matthew Corrente ($600,000); defenseman Matt Taormina ($510,000); and defenseman Mark Fraser ($500,000). Zharkov, Corrente, and Taormina were on two-way deals and coming off an entry level contract.
The decision to re-sign Zach Parise is very simple; he should definitely be re-signed. The decision for how long and how much are far more difficult. It will undoubtedly impact what the Devils do for their other free agents this summer and whether they trade anyone for cap relief. What we can expect is that Parise's next contract will take up a big chunk of whatever cap space the Devils may have for next season.
I'm admittedly a Zharkov fan and I think he brings more to a fourth line than, say, Tim Sestito. I hope he's re-signed. But he's got 11 other forwards plus guys in the AHL to compete with for a spot next season. It'll be interesting to see if he signs a short-term, lower salary deal like Fraser did last season. That should help his chances from a salary cap point of view.
Even if Zach Parise , the other four impending RFAs aren't easy decisions either. All are defensemen who are on the bubble, so to speak. Salmela came back from injury and was a regular on the blueline. Some nights, he was miserable to the point where you wonder if he truly belonged. On other nights, he looked like more than just a bottom-pairing defenseman. I wouldn't go so far to say that he's an offensive defenseman, but he doesn't look totally out of place on the attack. I think he'll be re-signed but not to a very long deal. The Devils may have a similar, and possibly superior, defender in Matt Taormina, who was a regular on the blueline prior to Salmela's return who showed some at-least-decent offensive skills. I would have loved to see what Jacques Lemaire would have done with him, but a significant injury made that impossible. I think he'll be re-signed but also to a short deal. This coming season may be the deciding point for whoever the Devils go with. I think one of them will eventually win out - probably Taormina at this point - but that remains to be seen.
Mark Fraser and Matthew Corrente are also similar players: physical, stay-at-home defensemen. Fraser has been around for a few seasons and you know what you're going to get from him. He'll throw his body about, show a little temper, and give decent enough defense on a third pairing while prone to some errors due to inexperience. I could say the same thing for Corrente. Corrente had his season cut short due to injury. As unfortunate as that is, he's not getting any younger and nased on what I seen of Corrente, I'm not sure what he does that Fraser doesn't already do on the ice. While I think they'll be re-signed, I have a feeling these two will be victims of the numbers game on defense sooner rather than later.
Above all else, I hope the Devils do not give one-way contracts to all four of these defensemen if only to preserve some roster flexibility. There is no need to have as many as nine defensemen on one-way deals. If the player isn't willing (Fraser and Salmela, who are on one-way deals), then maybe it's time to cut them loose.
NHL-Roster Impending Unrestricted Free Agents
The Devils have four impending UFAs on their NHL roster: goaltender Johan Hedberg (2010-11 NHL salary: $1,000,000); defenseman Andy Greene ($750,000); forward Adam Mair ($515,000); and defenseman Jay Leach ($500,000). Leach was on a two-way contract.
Johan Hedberg played very well as a backup. He was awesome in February, he filled in for Martin Brodeur when he was injured, and the only thing about him that bothered me is his game outside of the crease. The Moose was fine. However, he's 37 and it's unclear as to whether he'll even play hockey next season. Moreover, it's a buyer's market for goaltending; the Devils could (and should) get a viable backup for less than seven figures. Then again, Hedberg may be willing to come back on the cheap and if he can still "go" at 38, then I wouldn't mind one more season with him as the #2 keeper. I'm not holding my breath, though.
Andy Greene deserves a raise. He will be making seven figures after July 1. The big question is how much. Greene played out of his mind and filled as much of the injured-Paul-Martin void as one could hope for and more two seasons ago. In this past season, he didn't play nearly as well - but he wasn't bad at all. He got big minutes under Lemaire, and he did it with Anssi Salmela as his partner. Greene is also one of the few two-way defensemen on the roster, and perhaps the only one who could play 20+ minutes without being exposed every night.
However, Greene may be able to maximize his money elsewhere and the Devils have a crowded blueline. The team does have 5 defensemen already signed, 4 RFA defensemen, Alexander Urbom competing for a spot, and Bryce Salvador (hopefully) coming back from a serious concussion. Greene would definitely be on the roster despite all of the bodies given what he can do on the ice and what he has done in the last two seasons. That said, he's not irreplaceable. I could see him walking on July 1, though I'd rather have the Devils dump other players to keep Greene for at least another season or two.
I wouldn't mind if the other two UFAs went elsewhere. Unlike Tim Sestito, Adam Mair had some flashes of usefulness. However, like Sestito, he didn't bring much to the table on the fourth line. Since the Devils have David Steckel for another season, he can center that line with David Clarkson, (hopefully) Zharkov, and Rod Pelley as a spare player. I don't think he's needed and so he should not be re-signed. Leach may be more palatable if he's willing to be a veteran presence down in Albany. If he's retained, it should only be on a two-way contract and for a minimum salary.
Concluding Thoughts
As it turns out, my initial reaction is that the Devils will likely retain their RFAs, pushing them up to 40 on the reserve list. The main driver of how much that will cost will be Parise. His extension will be the X-factor. He will get more than $5 million, since that's how much he made this past season. When he was last healthy, he was definitely worth more than $5 million. If the two sides can agree to a cap hit around $7 million, then that would seem manageable for other re-signings.
Some of the RFAs will definitely be two-way deals so they all won't be on the salary cap; they would be signed specifically to stay in Albany but be available for any call-up duty if needed. I could see one or two of the four defensemen RFAs not qualified to create a little relief, but right now, I don't feel that way.
Andy Greene is the X-factor. If he's willing to hang around for under $2 million for a little bit, then I think keeping him can be viable. Difficult, but viable. If he wants $2 million or more, then he may not be able to stay. That kind of sucks, since I'm not confident in the lack of versatility of a top four consisting of Volchenkov, Tallinder, White, and Fayne. Of course, this is also contingent on what Parise gets.
The biggest surprise to me is that the Devils may not need to go out and sign someone off the open market except for a goalie. And that may be filled if Hedberg returns (and hopefully for less money). As noted in the beginning of this post, they nearly have a full roster already to go for next season. One RFA signing at forward and defenseman and they are at the minimum for personnel. Should they qualify and retain all of their RFAs, they'll have a glut of defenders. That would open up the possibility for some trades; something the Devils may have to do anyway for some cap relief.
Ultimately, the Devils have tough decisions to make with respect to who to keep long-term, who to keep short-term, and who to let go. I turn the question over to you. Who do you want to see re-signed by the Devils, outside of Zach Parise (I am assuming this is a universal sentiment among Devils fans - there's no need to repeat it)? Do you think the Devils can keep all of their RFAs and still have space for significant UFAs? What are your quick reactions to impending free agency for 2011? Please leave your answers and other free agency thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading.

There are two things I want to see the Devils do- re-sign Parise and acquire some depth on D- the loss of Salvador really hurt the team, much more than I expected it would. I wouldn’t mind signing a veteran D-man to a two-way contract so the team at least has someone to bring up if a defenseman gets hurt.

I’m sure that I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t mind losing Parise to an unmatchable offer sheet that should give us some nice assets. I dont think he will be making over 7 million a year nor should he. Yes, he’s a fan favorite, but the second half of the season proves that the team can play with Kovy as the main man. He should realize that this team will survive without him and that he probably wont be getting a ridiculous contract.
Just some food for thought

If I had to guess. He is going to get a 3-4 year deal at about 5.5 million per year.
I don’t imagine anyone giving more then that after a knee injury.
You gotta wonder if the reason Lou shut him down wasn’t just that here was nothing left to play for but to add some doubt that he was full healthy and bring the price down.
Nice conspiracy theory, except Lou didn’t shut him down. Parise chose to not play because he was sore and I would think because after the Devils were mathematically eliminated he didn’t believe it was worth the risk to keep playing and possibly injure himself again.

Honestly the only players I hope NJ retains are: Parise, Greene, Zharkov and Taormina.
If Salmela will take a cheap 2-way and Hedberg a cheaper 1 year deal great. But those 4 are and should be the priority. The rest I can live without and see what else is out there.
I wouldn’t mind if after those priority four were signed if NJ made a run at puck mover FA D-Man.
draft
Valeri you have a point, those are the same devils i definitely want back. As far as a puck moving D man (type s. neidemeyer) I would say if we get Larsson from the draft we might have what’s been missing since neidemeyer and rafalski left….

The Devils will have issues fitting their top pick under the cap, so the question is what do you do to bolster the defense in 2011-12?
well most likely larsson won’t be playing next year anyway even if we do get him, so i’m not sure we have to worry so much. If Bryce doesn’t come back from his injury (highly likely), we will most likely bring up some prospects in the “D” i don’t see us going after a puck moving D during the summer. Goalie is the only thing i can see us searching for because it seems like Johan want’s to be with his family in Atlanta.

John are you going to do a post about free agency? i dont think Lou will do anything major, unless he trades someone. i do however think that a depth player could be acquired for a 4th line or bottom pairing or 7th defenseman role.
John are you going to do a post about free agency?
What do you call this?

i meant for all other free agents from other teams. like if lou is going to sign players that are free agents, not the impending free agents of this team.

So the Devils have about $10 million in space (if Upper limit is $62.2m) for Parise, Greene, Zharkov, a 7th defenseman (Salmela, Fraser, Taormina) and a goalie. That would make the roster: 13 forwards, 7 defenders and 2 goalies. I just don’t see it.
A trade would solve it (Clarkson?) but I really think buying out Salvador is the way to go. Devils save $1.93m this season and it will cost them ($967k) the following year but so Rolston, White, and Brodeur are off the cap (over $13.2m). I love Sal, but his injury and age scare the heck out of me and I doubt he’ll be worth close to his contract.
That amount can be used to give Greene a little more rather them see him walking and have options for the depth players on two-way contracts.

I think Lou will go into camp again over the cap limit and wait until an injury happens. Seriously, with Salvador’s status as uncertain as it is, I think he just may do it all over again.
poor bryce, i haven’t really kept up on the news but last i heard he might not be coming back from his injury which is sad, please correct me if i’m wrong. I don’t see clarkson being traded, i do see someone like Zuby getting traded, although i’d like to see him stay. I don’t care for salmela, he played awful and then stepped up his game to play par at best. But to be fair, most of our “D” kind of sucked this year until JL came back, but even then I saw some crazy mistakes i’m not used to seeing the Devils “D” make… my main concern will be who will be our coach cause I have a feeling he will definitely have some say about who will stay and who will go right?

Salvador told me on Feb. 19 that he has been assured by doctors that he will be able to have a full, normal summer of training and be ready for the start of training camp next season.
This sounds promising. But being away from the game for a full year at his age still concerns me. He’ll need to get his strength, conditioning, skating, and overall play back. That’s a lot of cobwebs to shake off. His concussion was so serious, he hasn’t really done anything physical. At a $2.9m cap hit, it’s a high risk option to keep him on the roster.
I say Clarkson because looking at the roster for next year- he’s looking like a 4th liner. Your top 9 looks to be set in Kovy, Parise, Zajac, Elias, Zubrus, Rolston, Josefson, Tedenby, Palmieri (who knows what the lines will be). Zharkov, Steckel and Pelley combined may not equal Clarkson’s cap hit. Trading Zubrus is an option as well. Palmieri can handle top minutes as we’ve seen and Tedenby has shown he’s no slouch either.
I think Lou resigns most if not all of the impending RFA defensemen. It creates a battle for a roster spot or two between a handful of guys. You play your best, you come to camp fit and in shape, you’ll play in Jersey. If not..see you Upstate. I like the top 5 at defense being Volchenkov, Tallinder, White, Fayne, and Greene. Throw in one or two of the RFAs or maybe even Urbom and the Devils have a solid mix there I can live it.

Clarkson is an ill-fitting piece, but I like a 4th line of Zharkov-Steckel-Clarkson a lot more than I like Pelley-Steckel-Zharkov. Clarkson has the capability of being that fourth line guy who can chip in goals and change the tide of the game.
I’d rather get rid of Clarkson than Zubrus (obv dumping Rolston on someone else would be ideal, even through re-entry), as I think Zubrus is a versatile guy who can make do with pretty much any role you give him, but I think Lou will hold on to everyone again and flirt with being over the cap. Having both Clarkson and Zubrus will be better for this team in 2012-13, when it will be more ready to contend.
I think this is the way to go.
Based on your estimate of $10 mill being being available: Sign Parise at $7 mill (over estimate) that leaves $3 mill. Buyout Salvador, now we are at $5 mill. Sign Andy Green at no more than $2 mill. Now we are back at $3 mill available. Free up another $2 mill in trades to get back to $5 mill. Sign Frazee as a backup with a minimum contract. Sign Zharkov for around $700 k. With the remaining hopefully we can go after a guy like Ian White or Joni Pitkanen. I’d really like to see the Devs go after James Wisniewski but he will probably fetch a deal in the high $4 mill range.
Even though this team was one of the worst offensive Devils teams in history, I think that will sort itself out with the return of Parise, a more consistent Ilya Kovalchuk, and the further development of Palmieri and Tedenby.
Bottom line, we need another top 4 defenseman. If he is a puck mover, great! But let’s get the D solid this year to protect an again Marty and what could be a young backup.
You're playing worse and worse every day and right now you're playing like it's next month.

Keeping Zharkov is a must for me. I feel like he as big of a fan favorite as you can get for someone that has scored 2 career goals and plays on the bottom 2 lines.
The defense is tricky because it could become very cluttered starting this year (and certainly next year depending on this years draft/development of prospects). I am in favor of cutting ties with Fraser and Salmela, I think Corrente deserves one more look based on the fact that he was a former 1st round pick and I don’t want to give up on him too soon (although it’s looking like we could’ve used that pick better).
But like John said, a lot depends on whether some of these guys want to take two-way contracts. Also, I’d be surprised to see any of them signed to longer than a one year deal considering Urbom will hopefully be competing for a permanent job in New Jersey, perhaps with players like Gelinas and Burlon not too far behind. Heck, Gelinas was one of the last defensemen cut in camp even this past year. Maybe another year in the Q has better prepared him to be a serious contender for the big club next season? Lots of stuff at play—-and it all initially hinges on whether Greene is re-signed
kind of off topic
besides who will/can we keep for next season, but who’ll be our “C” for next season? we never named an “offical” C after langenbrunner left

i think this team proved they can win without a guy with a letter on his shirt. go with 4 a’s like they did to start 2007-2008. Patrick, Zach, Ilya, and pick a fourth. Zubrus or Tallinder would be fine since they get plenty of ice. Eventually someone will be named.

If that’s the case it’s probably going to be Elias, Parise as Permanent alternates and a rotation between Kovalchuk and either Tallinder or Volchenkov.

If Salvador stays, I think their ceiling for Parise and Greene will need to be around $6.5M and $1.5M cap hits respectively. Much more than that and there’s very little flexibility. I’m sure we’ll all spend a lot of time playing with capgeek’s cap calculator But here’s my take. Like I said, very little flexibility, lines a nd pairings not necessarily what they should be, just one possible set-up, my guesstimates for the re-signings in bold, Zharkov and Taormina both only getting the minimum 10% necessary to qualify them:

Does the bonus get counted for the qualifying offer? Of Zharkov’s $850K cap hit, $240K is a bonus, so his base salary is $610K. Would it only take $671K to qualify him?
On the other hand, I could see Zharkov and Taormina getting signed to 2-yr deals at $550K or less…trading money for the security.

I can’t see Hedberg taking a 25% paycut after the season he just had. There are a few teams who were undone by poor backup goaltending (Carolina, for one) that might take a shot on Hedberg.
I do like the idea of giving Zharkov something like a one-way $650k 2 year deal, and Taormina something like $800k a season for two years. Give them some measure of security.
Me, I’m burying Salvador or buying him out. I can’t see any way around that. I’m also getting rid of Clarkson.
With Hedberg concerned about his family time, he might try a ‘southern’ team to be close to his family and Carolina might be the perfect spot.
Personally I would give Zharkov $600K for 2 (minor quibble) and I might even up a Taormina offer to 3 years with less of a cap hit

I think we overpaid for Hedberg to begin with. First off, Hedberg was earning less than $1.1M in Atlanta. He was signed early in the free agent period, but the teams that were patient managed to get comparable goalies for cheap. Marty Turco (age 34) was signed for 1 yr, $1.3M to be the starter in Chicago. Jose Theodore (33) got 1 yr, $1.1M in Minnesota. Patrick Lalime (35) 1 yr, $650K in Buffalo. Younger backup goalies were able to get 2 yr deals, but not for much more money: Marty Biron (33) 2 yrs, $875K per; Brent Johnson (33) 2 yrs, $600K per.
Regardless, even with Marty’s recent injury history, I’d rather make sure we keep the guys we want for the long haul and go cheap on a backup goalie this offseason.
As for Taormina, I really don’t believe he’ll earn that much. His injury hurts his negotiating leverage, and if he can simply be qualified, why sign him to a long deal that puts us in a tighter cap bind when we can easily qualify him for a year, see if he proves himself, then sign him to a longer deal next year for more money when we have more cap space? That $200K+ difference could mean the difference between re-signing Greene and being forced to insert yet another young defenseman into the lineup.
Did we pay more than the $1MM base for Hedberg? I dont recall seeing what his bonus qualifications were.
The only goalie you mentioned above who you can say that played better or as well as Hedberg was Theodore. I believe he wanted starters money, but it wasn’t there. LL probably said to himself that he couldn’t wait for the market to play itself out and play the season with a Danis type goalie.
But because of the bonus issue, it’s possible Hedberg made less than Theodore.

Non NHL-Roster Impending Unrestricted Free Agents
For Albany, I would say you should try to bring back Magnan just to stabilize the defense at Albany as they have a very, very young defense there.
Mills, I think will also be back. He offers a lot of ‘intangibles’ and is the on-ice captain (IMO) during games.
The rest of the players are replacable with other AHL type players.

I might have a little mancrush on Zalewski so I hope he stays. I think he can play the 4th line in the NHL. He plays small, but once he left Worcester he and Henrique were some of the few that were able to produce offense.
Vasyunov-John you hit the nail on the head. He might be a victim of the numbers game. His play improved late in the year when he was on a line with better players but I think he is being passed on the depth chart by others.
Perkovitch is OK, although I wouldnt do anything more than a one year deal.
In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils
I think a little more time in the AHL will benefit Vasyunov. He either has to have some kind of scoring revelation or learn how to be an effective 3rd/4th liner if he wants to make it to the NHL. I think he’s got some skills and definitely has the speed, but hasn’t put the whole game together just yet. We’ll see…I’m not ready to give up on him just yet.
Well next year might be his last chance to prove he can play on the top 2 lines…at Albany.

Goalies
I believe next year is when you have to throw Frazee into the fire at the NHL level as a backup. He played well this year (when not injured) and while he was inconsistent you have to account for the young defense in front of him. A two year two way deal? One year, one way?
McKenna? There is no pressing need to bring him back.
That said, what about Albany/Trenton as far as goalies? Do you give Caruso the ‘veteran’ slot at Albany?
Where does Clermont start? Albany or Trenton? (Wedgewood is another year away from the organization because of the AHL/CHL agreement)

Overall:
I feel as though Parise needs to come back. Yes they proved they could play with ilya as the guy, but we know what to expect from Parise, and we need to keep his cap hit under 6.5 mil. If Greene costs demands more than 2 mil, he needs to go, we simply cannot afford that.
I also agree that this is Frazee’s make or break year. Bring him in as a backup, give him 15 games, see what he can do.
Finally, Clarkson NEEDS NEEDS NEEDS to go. There are guys like him for cheaper prices, but the tag he carries could demand a fair return. He simply cannot do enough for the cap he undertakes.

My thoughts
So instead of assuming the cap moves up to 62.2, I moved it up 100,000 since that was the smallest increase to have ever happened (08-09 season changing into the 09-10).

I do understand Zach is only getting 6.5 M, but if he wants more it would just come out of Greene’s pay.
However, I would say the only problem with this would be there are no extra players, so it would be the exact same situation the Devils were in at the start of the year. Also, I kept Salvador in the minors, because they cannot afford to buy him out. With Tao and Zharkov, it was based off of FrankG929 estimations.

Buy Outs
Interesting. But before free agency comes the buy out period from Approximately June 15th to June 30th. I suspect there could be a few buyouts this year. Salvadore? White?
Parise should be a given. I can’t imagine why any Devils fan would feel otherwise, even with the knee injury. Pay the man. I would also like to see both Zharkov and Taormina given another year or two each at least, but wouldn’t be dissapointed if Salmella stuck around. I think if he can be more consistent, especially in his own end, he has a chance to be a difference maker.
Problem with Salmela sticking around and becoming more consistent is that his best teacher just retired. Unless a defense-first coach is hired, I don’t see him improving any more.

New Jersey needs to sign Zach for around $6.5 million…Front load the deal and get it done. We can’t really afford a huge cap hit with Elias here for a few more seasons with his huge cap hit and Kovalchuk. Thankfully Rolston will be gone after next season. Zubrus should be traded because of his cap hit.
Is there any reason to believe Andy Greene could be re-signed for the $1.5-2 million/season figure so many are bandying about higher up in the comments?
It doesn’t appear to be a particularly strong class of UFA defensemen to me…. and experienced defensemen were fetching $3 million/year last summer. Unless there has been (or very shortly will be) a significant “market correction”, I don’t see any compelling reason for Greene to sign before July 1st when the stupid money will likely be back out there.
At three million per annum, I’m telling Andy Greene “thanks for the memories” and moving on. What about the rest of you?
It’s hard to read media quotes as gospel, but Greene seems pretty sincere about his desire to stay in NJ. I don’t know if he’ll stay for that little, but I think it’s possible. The Devils certainly hurt his value by having him play with Anssi Salmela for the last half of the year.
When guys are pretty sure they’re going to leave, they’ll usually speak differently.
I don’t know, my memory tells me he was dragged down with Tallinder under MacLean, but that’s confirmation bias like whoa.
Seriously, I think what hurt his value was that he came back to Earth – he was awesome in 09-10 but unsustainably so. It’s worth a comparison.

My recollection is that Greene’s Corsi numbers with Salmela were downright horrific when compared to Tallinder/Fayne, and that the raw numbers for Greene/Salmela weren’t particularly noteworthy even in a vacuum. I also recall having debates with Triumph about Greene/Salmela vs. White/Volchenkov, especially where zone starts and distribution of ice time were concerned…. and that Greene/Salmela got the benefit where those two factors came into play.
Now, if someone wants to pose the argument that it was Salmela dragging Andy Greene down, I’ll give it a listen because I think there might be something there.
My concern is that teams out there would be willing to float offers to Greene in the neighborhood of $2.5-3 million/year, similar to what a lot of defensemen seemed to be getting last summer once you deducted the big ticket guys. I’m also not nearly so naive as to think that some of those GMs wouldn’t quitely say something to Greene’s agent under the guise of bending their ear about something else (say, a guy who is actually under contract to their team). I can’t find the raw numbers on last summer’s free agent frenzy, but I haven’t looked very hard just yet. When I went through a “potential UFA tracker” for defensemen (on TSN.ca/nhl), I didn’t see a whole lot that jumped out at me once you set aside Kaberle and Pitkanen (big ticket guys), plus Adam Foote (retired) and Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit or Sweden).
I don’t really think Andy Greene is the kind of guy who’s getting his ear bent by other teams. There are 15 players who will likely be in higher demand.
Plus, Greene could have been traded at the deadline, but he wasn’t. That suggests that the Devils are still interested in retaining his services.
I don’t know if it’s realistic to think Greene will sign for less than $2M a season, or for less than 3 yrs. I think he gets 3 yrs, $7.5M per on the open market.
There’s a sizable list of defensemen I think will earn more than Greene, less than 35 years old, and are up for grabs: Kaberle, Pitkanen, Bieksa, Ehrhoff, Wisniewski, Markov, Brewer, and Ian White, at least. A lot of these guys are of the puck-moving type, which will help us to retain Greene. Question is, do we want to commit more than 2 yrs to this guy with a plethora of young dmen drafted to compete for spots in 1-3 yrs? If he underperforms, we’d be stuck with him – but at least we have significant cap relief coming in the next two offseasons.
Lou ought to offer 1.5, 1.75 max. If Greene wants to test the market, adios, but we’ll be happy to offer you 1.25 when you come back after getting no bites because of the others available being signed first and less money being available for him. Parise’s first. If we lose Greene to keep Parise, absolutely no problem.

There’s no doubt that Parise comes first and you don’t keep Greene at the expense of losing Parise. But what do you really think Greene is worth? Say what you want about his poor Corsi with Salmela while Tallinder-Fayne was thriving, but Lemaire still trusted Greene enough to give him the second-most ice time on the team, second only to Tallinder at both even strength and overall. He was often the only defenseman used on the PP and got a ton of PK time as well. The guy is probably a stretch as a first-pairing defender, but quite comfortably fills a second-pairing role, even on a good team. Second-pairing defenders generally go for about $3M, but I think Greene gets knocked down a bit in price because of his size and questions about his short resume and whether he can be successful outside of the Devils’ system.
Furthermore, consider what the Devils’ defense will look like without Greene. We’re left with a bunch of veteran stay-at-homers in White and Volchenkov, and one moderately two-way vet in Tallinder who’s not suited to carrying the offensive burden for the blueline. Maybe Salvador comes back, maybe he doesn’t, but in any case he’s not a puck-mover. We’re left with filling the rest of the spots in with young guys like Taormina, Fayne, Urbom, and maybe Salmela and Corrente who can all move the puck and shoot, but who knows whether they’ll take a step forward or backward next season? And what happens when one or two of White, Volchenkov, or Tallinder inevitably get injured?
Obviously Jacques is a better judge than I am, he just doesn’t impress me beyond last season’s success. Without Jacques, he’s a below average defenseman. Who’s to say that won’t happen next season wherever he plays? As far as how much, I’d say anything over a cap hit of 1.75M, I’d say goodbye Greenie.

Re-Signing Zach
I’ve been a fan since the red, right and green days. Resigning #9 is vital to the success of the Devils on and off the ice. On the ice – After Sidney, Zach is the best player in the league. He can take a team to Cups Off the ice – Zach puts people in the seats and more importintaly in the lexuary suits. Mr. V. should become involved ASAP before the Devils loose the best player this tean has ever had and Mr. V. looses his shirt.
As the former governor of California used to to say, “I’ll be back”.

A) Parise is a RFA – he’ll be here for at least another season unless something horribly awry goes on.

Parise is a very good player, but calling him “the best player the franchise has ever had” is a major stretch. Maybe in ten or fifteen years after his career is over and done with…. but I think you’ve got two legitimate candidates for that title on this team now, and neither of them has a “Z” in their name. Parise had a terrific run over the four seasons from 2005 through 2009. Let’s not mistake that for a ceremony Opening Night to put his number up in the rafters.
I also agree with KovyIsLove. You’d have a better argument if you claimed Parise is the second best Devil than if you claim he’s the second best player in the League.
He can take a team to Cups Off the ice – Zach puts people in the seats and more importintaly in the lexuary suits.
Lots of people “can” take a team to a Stanley Cup. Right now, Parise hasn’t taken the Devils past Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. As far as putting people in the seats, I don’t buy that argument. Maybe Kovalchuk, if there’s anyone on this franchise who does — we had this discussion at length last summer during the debate over whether or not to re-sign him.
As for the last…. you have to put a gun to my head to make me wear a suit, luxury or otherwise. If you mean “luxury suites” (and I suppose you do), most of those are sold as tax write-offs to lawyers and other business-type people. I don’t doubt that some people buy the suites because they genuinely want to be at the game, but I suspect many are sold for the ability to write off the money against business and because it comes with parking and a hoity-toity restaurant (not really, but that’s my opinion about it). I wouldn’t be shocked if many of the suite buyers aren’t really much in the way of hockey fans altogether.
Second in the league is definitely a big stretch, though he is definitely top-ten, if not top-five when you consider how good he is both ways.
Zach is hugely valuable to the Devils in particular though. This team lacked a presence down low that can clean up messes out front and find the back of the net. More rebounds and open nets went wanting then I care to remember and Parise is just the kind of player who can get to those pucks and bury them. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he could be the best American player in the NHL now (save for possibly Kane) and he came up with the Devils. He means a lot to this organization and I think a deal will ultimately get done.
If we don't resign Greene we should see how much James Wisnewski wants from Montréal
He and Greene are kind of like the same guy. Other than that I would rather Greene walk if we can’t afford him so we can allow players like Urbom, Taoromina, Sova (maybe?), and Merrill (in the future) compete for Greene’s role.

Let Greene walk if he asks upwards of 2 million. Too inconsistent to be worth more then 2 mil in my books.
