The General Hockey/Devils Question Depot
Relevancy is a big deal at ILWT in order to keep discussions in comments and such organized and on-topic. That when a reader goes and reads them, they will expect that what they read has something to do with the post they are commenting on. This has worked fairly well since 2009 or so.
However, what about those who just have a simple question unrelated to anything? Well, there's no need to derail comment sections or put up short-on-content FanPosts anymore. This is the place to do it. In the comments, feel free to ask your out-of-the-blue random hockey questions. Here's a sample of topics of what questions should be asked here:
- The Game of Hockey - Everything from rules to tactics; from beginner questions on the game itself to more advanced queries like advanced stats.
- The Rock - Unfamiliar as to what to expect from the area? Wondering about ticket prices? Confused over transportation? Many users here go to games regularly and can possibly help you out. (NOTE: There will be no buying/selling tickets in this post.)
- Contracts - The Collective Bargaining Agreement isn't the easiest read, ask a clarifying question here.
- History - If you can't find something out about the past of the game, then why not ask it here?
- The Devils - Of course, you can ask something about the Devils. If you don't see a post that's relevant to what you want to ask and if it's just a simple question (it would be too small for a FanPost), then ask it here.
- This Site - Maybe you're curious about something about ILWT for some reason. Provided it's not too invasive or inappropriate, I may answer a few of these as well.
So if you have any questions that has a direct answer (no polls or anything like "Do you want X or Y?"), please leave them in the comments. (Note: Answers are not guaranteed.) If you want to answer a question, please do so by replying to the original comment - this will help keep this organized. Above all, play nice - this is just as much for people new to the sport as it is to those who have been bleeding Devils red since 1982.
If this works, there will be later incarnations. Otherwise, this will just fade away over time. Have at it!!

Excellent idea. Let me get it started off with something I’ve recently wondered about related to hockey history/development of the game.
How is it possible that Bobby Orr or Paul Coffey, aka defensemen, amassed so many points in an NHL season. Orr had over 100 points six seasons in a row (including two with 135+) and Coffey had three straight seasons over 120 (including one season of 138 points). By comparison, since the lockout, only three people have eclipsed 70: Lidstrom, Mike Green, and Sergei Zubov—and no one has more than Lidstrom’s 80 in 2005-06.
Has the game of hockey evolved in some way that is not conducive to defensemen putting up such ridiculous totals? OR do the totals of players like Orr and Coffey just speak to how incredible of players they truly were?
Right off the top of my head
The game has certainly evolved since the days of Orr and later Coffey. They were fantastic players, true. They also didn’t get to face defensive schemes like a 1-2-2; d-men in general were not nearly as mobile as they usually are now; and goaltending was largely stand-up/reflex style as opposed to the positionally-based styles we see today. All of that led to more goals then and so fantastically talented players were able to put up ridiculous numbers – even from the back
Of course, the teams Orr and Coffey were on were loaded in their time (Esposito, Bucyk for Boston; Messier, Gretzky, Kurri for Edmonton)

Nope. I can update the timestamp to move it back to the top whenever I wish, which will likely be the first few times it falls off. If the whole thing goes inactive, then I’ll let it slide naturally over time.
Plus, if people Rec it, it’ll stay on top for a while.

This is a useful post.
This is a useful post and I hope it’s successful. I encourage us all to read it and use it, recommend it, etc. Perhaps if it becomes “featured” it will become a great place for one-stop-shopping.
However, I believe your desire to control the flow of a thread may be somewhat misplaced and unrealistic. The institutional purpose of “relevancy,” keeping “discussions… organized and on-topic” and content “expect[able]” for the reader do have some merit. I don’t believe it has a great deal of merit, but it does have some merit.
However, your past efforts at enforcing “relevance” – for which, it appears you are the sole arbiter – have been met with derision, scorn, and dissent in the past. Some users have tried (and perhaps failed) to understand why certain discussions are nipped in the bud even while the participants are enjoying the playful, insightful banter which flows from spontaneous discussions.
As such, I doubt your attempt to herd cats will go over much better in the future. In part, this is because understanding the difference between permissible “tangents” and impermissible “irrelevancies” is often too subtle or conceptually amorphous to grasp. Alternatively, the distinction may fall by the wayside through underenforcement, as the administrative burden of enforcement may simply grow too top-heavy or not pass under your watchful gaze.
Many frequent followers and readers of this blog respect your insights, writing, and even the somewhat tight-fisted moderation you perform in your role here. The benefits include the site’s great content, the insightful comments, and reasoned discussion in a professional, adult atmosphere of polite debate. On top of that we together enjoy a very sincere, mutual love for hockey and the NJ Devils. By contrast, many of the other SB Nation hockey blogs present a confusing (dis)array of inside jokes, irrelevancies, caustic taunting, and so forth. That’s not as productive or as useful as what goes on here at ILWT.
Perhaps you think this line of discussion “too invasive or inappropriate” (per above). Perhaps you find it an in violation of the most sweeping of guideline catch-alls because it is “in general detriment to the community as a whole.” Perhaps you consider it a “public discussion of discipline.” I think it’s a stretch to assert any of those but hey, what do I know? Obviously, if this were my blog (which I don’t want it to be), things would be different.
We’re all adults here (mostly) and most commenters understand your management-style and modus operandi by this point. You want a tight ship and are unapologetic about it. You are a dyed-in-the-wool advocate of advanced statistics (Corsi, Fenwick, shot attempts, etc) among other performance metrics for hockey excellence. You scoff at poorly-thought-out conventional hockey wisdom and other unsubstantiated claims. Those interests sometimes clash with or find no safe haven with the values of readers.
Most commenters probably don’t notice or care about rule enforcement or management style. Many do notice but their love for hockey, the Devils, and the great content on ILWT overwhelms whatever distaste they have for the moderation style (if any). There are others, still, who make an effort to buck the system and have little success, only to grow frustrated.
In sum: as much as I want this thread to succeed, I see the problems, per above.
Also, I personally participate in, enjoy, and perceive benefits with many tangential comment threads. For one, the spontaneity and flow of such a tangential discussion is often appropriate in light of a game thread or comment by Doc or Chico. Such discussions also produce a natural, live, authentic result among willing parties. I personally think it creates a few ILWT inside-jokes, is a way to relive nostalgic hockey moments, and creates some camaraderie amongst superfans like us. That it is not “organized” is part of the fun.
That is a lot of words, Alan.
Still, in spite of a lack of “?”, I feel there’s a question in there somewhere, and I’ll answer what I believe is the main concern:
However, I believe your desire to control the flow of a thread may be somewhat misplaced and unrealistic. The institutional purpose of "relevancy," keeping "discussions… organized and on-topic" and content "expect[able]" for the reader do have some merit. I don’t believe it has a great deal of merit, but it does have some merit.

Some users have tried (and perhaps failed) to understand why certain discussions are nipped in the bud even while the participants are enjoying the playful, insightful banter which flows from spontaneous discussions.
Completely disagree – I’ve been doing this since 2009 or so and so far it’s gone pretty well. From my standpoint, it hasn’t been a detriment to the site at all. More people than ever read it. Users keep going up. In fact, it’s one of the higher trafficked hockey blogs on SBN. And big, big, big reason why it is where it is now is that the site is so organized. I can see how some may not like the strictness, but I’ve received more compliments about how there’s intelligent discussion on the site and very little drama compared to other blogs. It encourages those active users to actually read what they’re commenting on (which may surprise you, but not everyone does this on many blogs – and I don’t know why!), leading to better users and better discussions. It’s a benefit for new visitors who can read the comments and gain something out of it instead having to parse why there’s a gigantic digression from what they’re commenting on or wonder why someone’s using the comments to bring up an unrelated issue. There’s actually quite a lot of merit to it.
As for the latter part, I’m not sure what banter has been insightful, but I’ll go with it. If there is truly something worth discussing that is a valid point that isn’t covered by a post, then make a FanPost about it. In those cases, it’ll be more than a hastily and poorly written (capitalization, horrendous misspellings) 75-word piece that just asks a simple question. There will be reasons and evidence and points of discussion. Take this FanPost for example. Did the user see anything about mock drafts here? No. (or I should say, not yet) But was it worth writing about? You bet – to the point that it’s actually worth putting more than a few minutes to type it all in and is worth the reader’s time.
Lastly, the whole point of this very post was in response to a suggestion Tom made in the comments a recent FanPost. Now, there is a place to ask simple, short questions about rules, contracts, etc. that isn’t covered anywhere else and isn’t worth a FanPost: here. Perfect if you don’t want to write up a whole FanPost.
And so it is and so it shall continue.

I have to say I really like the tight-ship manner in which this blog is run. If it was just more trash-talking nonsense like you see on Yahoo sports, or even NJ.com, I wouldn’t waste my time here. I think it’s a great community with a high standard of commentary, both from the editors and the public members.
1995 - 2000 - 2003
That’s not so many words. The average game recap here is just as long or longer, and loads of people read those. But, yeah, it just kept going…
I suppose I didn’t intend to put a question in there. But, you correctly identified one area of concern.
However, in your response I believe you may conflate the distinction between keeping the blog “organized” with your desire to police “relevance.” The two may be related in your mind, but they’re not necessarily the same thing and they may not serve the same master.
Organization, consistency, and intelligent conversation are desirable. As I think I made clear in my post, I’m glad ILWT is successful. I take you at your word that those are three important factors behind its success. I suppose I’m not convinced that policing “relevance” will advance the goals of organization, consistency, and reasoned debate.
It is typically the case that the major thrust of a post on ILWT is about hockey success and quality of play, prospects, the franchise/ management. That makes sense, because we’re Devils fans. So, enforcing “relevance” may simply stifle spontaneous and unrelated questions even while the heft of a thread may continue to be organized, consistent, and reasoned around those topics. If that means it also stifles humor, mutual animosity for other teams, or other forms or irrelevant hockey fandom…. then I think that is a shame.
Anyway, if the justification for policing “relevance” is “the benefit of new users,” then you would be entitled to create and enforce any rule, any time, at all times on the basis that some imaginary, theoretical “new user” (or sometimes-lurker) should be protected against befuddling digressions or so forth. That seems like quite a cross to bear, as new users will learn quickly to ignore a great deal just as the current users do.
Anyway, it is your task to weigh the interests of actual users, prospective users, and theoretical users as against the institutional purpose for blog success, the methods employed to achieve that success (rule stringency, organization, etc), and your personal code of discipline. I don’t envy the task, and if I were the taskmaster (which I don’t wish to be), there would be different results.
Good luck.
The more regimented format John maintains here is not for everyone. Just as total free-form chaos would not be for everyone.
Regarding your last paragraph and tangential discussions. There is a big difference between a tangent and total irrelevance. A comment about what Doc or Chico said during a game broadcast would not get shut down as quickly as an out of the blue comment or question. Granted John wouldn’t let it go on “forever”, nor should he, but a comment or three about a Chicoism does occur and generally provides comic relief (which was desperately needed in the first half of this past season :-).
Oh and John, there was a “?” I could edit it down to just the final question, but that would come off snarky:
Perhaps you consider it a "public discussion of discipline." I think it’s a stretch to assert any of those but hey, what do I know?
Just remember, nobody will ever agree with everyone, nor will everybody always agree with you. Society would not necessarily be any better if this were true. Like they say, variety is the spice of life, but all things in moderation isn’t a bad one either.

New tv deal and the cap
Does anyone know if the new tv deal with nbc and versus will increase the cap, and if so would it be a substantial amount?
So this is what it's like to be an Islanders fan...
by Marty 4 Prez on Apr 19, 2011 10:50 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
If the NHL CBA is similar to that of basketball and football, the players are supposed to receive a given percentage of gross revenues. The salary cap is an “estimate” of where that figure will land in a given year, which explains why there is also an escrow system that the players pay into, for the eventuality that the League over-estimated revenues and the cap and money has to be clawed back to keep the percentages in line.
Theoretically, a 10-year/$2 billion deal equates to $200 million/season or $6.67 million per team per season. If there was no TV deal before, that would likely equate to a $3-4 million increase in the cap, but I’m sure the NHL was getting something from the previous deal and counting some level of income in their cap calculations. How much, I’m not sure…. because that last deal was a “profit sharing” deal between NBC/Versus and the League, where NBC would recoup its’ “costs” first and then split the remainder of the ad revenue with the League on a 50/50 basis. I imagine the League got something from that arrangement, but it’s anyone’s guess what the figure actually was.
The short answer to your question: Yes, the cap should go up a little bit from the television deal, but it isn’t the only “moving figure” within the calculation. Ticket sales are still the primary driver, and I don’t have numbers handy about how that has changed the last few years (with the recession and all) and where that might play into the number.
The big question, then, will be when the NHLPA looks at the season ahead, and sees $120 million in new TV money, along with $57 million in beer money as well, will they funnel all that into a higher salary cap figure, or stick to the usual 5%, and give themselves some opportunity to reduce the escrow which is withheld from every player in the league? Considering those two major deals alone, they could justify a cap increase of $3.36 million ($177 million times 57%, divided by 30 teams), or 5.6%. That’s completely separate from the general growth of the game.
Emphasis mine.
Okay I've got one
How do you post an image from your own computer in a comment? I understand that there is the image button right there, but that only seems to work for an image from another webpage. If I screw around with something in MS Paint for example and save it on my desktop, can I post it in a comment? Do I copy the location from my computer into the “Enter the URL” box? I don’t want to waste 3 minutes superimposing a prom dress over Sean Avery’s body if I’m not gonna be able to figure out how to post it.

No. You can only post pictures that you have stored on the internet somewhere, you need to provide an actual URL – not the directory of your hard drive. So you’ll need to upload your picture from your computer to some image hosting website like Photobucket or Flickr or Tinypic or Imageshack or even your own personal space. Just Google “image storage” and you’ll see plenty of free options. The image button will automatically put the “img src” tags for the URL.

Question about the rules – If Gregory Campbell commits a questionable hit, does Colin have to suspend him or is that one of those hits that they “let slide?” Does Colin fine his son and then re-imburse him on Christmas?
Okay, serious question: in overtime (reg. season), if a team takes two minor penalties, it becomes a 5-on-3. Assuming the 5-on-3 expires, does the 5th player have a restriction on how quickly he must return to the bench? When does a “too many men” penalty apply?
DownGoesAvery. Check out the hockey blog that's shaking the world: Down Goes Avery and on Twitter (@DownGoesAvery ).
If Gregory Campbell commits a questionable hit, does Colin have to suspend him or is that one of those hits that they "let slide?"
I know it was a joke, but the answer is “no.” Colin Campbell is recused from handling issues that deal with his son, and I believe Boston as a whole, due to the obvious conflict of interest. How a person that he presumably appoints and that reports to him sufficiently bypasses the conflict remains to be seen.
Okay, serious question: in overtime (reg. season), if a team takes two minor penalties, it becomes a 5-on-3.
OT in the regular season is played 4-on-4, so there couldn’t be a 5-on-3 situation.
Assuming the
54-on-3 expires, does the54th player have a restriction on how quickly he must return to the bench? When does a "too many men" penalty apply?
The player returns to play when the penalty expires, assuming the OT period hasn’t ended, and becomes the legal 4th man on the ice. If there were already four men on the ice before his penalty expired, the team should be penalized for Too Many Men.
Whether he returns to the bench or not is at the discretion of the coach.
If it were a Major Penalty, he must wait until the next stoppage in play after the expiration of his penalty to exit the penalty box, though the OT period is only 5 minutes long and so this would require that the player took the penalty prior to the end of regulation or else he’d just hit the showers early.
OT in the regular season is played 4-on-4, so there couldn’t be a 5-on-3 situation.
Actually, that’s not true. If a team already shorthanded takes a second penalty, the other team is allowed to ice the fifth skater. From the NHL rule book, as usual, emphasis mine.
84.3 Overtime – Regular-season – Penalties – When regulation time
ends and the teams are 5 on 3, teams will start overtime 5 on 3. Once
player strength reaches 5 on 4 or 5 on 5, at the next stoppage of play,
player strength is adjusted to 4 on 3 or 4 on 4, as appropriate.
When regulation ends and teams are 4 on 4 teams will start
overtime 3 on 3.
If at the end of regulation time teams are three (3) skaters on three
(3) skaters, overtime starts three (3) skaters on three (3) skaters.
Once player strength reaches five (5) skaters on four (4) skaters or
five (5) skaters on five (5) skaters, at the next stoppage player
strength is adjusted to four (4) skaters on three (3) skaters or four (4)
skaters on four (4) skaters, as appropriate.
At no time will a team have less than three players on the ice. This
may require a fifth skater to be added if a two-man advantage occurs.
Refer to Reference Tables – Table 19 – Penalties In Effect Prior to
the Start of Overtime – Regular Season on page 157.
If a team is penalized in overtime, teams play four (4) skaters
against three (3) skaters. If both teams are penalized with minor
penalties at the same stoppage of play (with no other penalties in
effect), teams will play three (3) skaters against three (3) skaters.
In overtime, if a team is penalized such that a two-man advantage
is called for, then the offending team will remain at three (3) skaters
while the non-offending team will be permitted a fifth skater.
At the first stoppage of play after the two-man advantage is no
longer in effect, the numerical strength of the team will revert back to
either four (4) skaters on four (4) skaters or a four (4) skaters on three
(3) skaters situation, as appropriate.

Whenever the next stoppage is, they make the appropriate changes.
Say there’s a 5-on-3 for 1:30. After that 1:30, one of the men in the box come out..it’s 5-on-4. There’s a stoppage 15 seconds later. They do a line change, whatever, but change it to a 4-on-3 for the remaining 15 seconds.

Who's the next Captain?
If Parise signs long term, it would be logical he puts the C on at the Press Conferance.
If not, is it Kovy?
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
I think the next head coach gets some say in that matter. Since we don’t know who the head coach is, yet, knowing where that vote might land is pure speculation.
IMO, Ilya Kovalchuk should NOT be captain under any circumstances. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy to death and I’m pleased he’s here for the long haul…. but I don’t see him as captain material. Personally, I wouldn’t have even given him the alternate captaincy vacated by Parise’s injury earlier this season.
Here’s an oddball thought hearkening back to the days of hockey yore: How about having the locker room vote on the issue by way of secret ballot? Let the players decide who symbolizes what the captain means to them instead of having it dictated from on high.

Is Zach a big toe? No.

I’m honestly not sold on the idea of Zach as the Captain. I know he’s the presumed fan favorite for the position and there’s no questioning his work ethic, but there’s more to being a Captain than on-ice production.
There are different kinds of Captains around the League, and as a fellow “lead by example” kind of guy, I can appreciate that his on-ice ability can be inspiring, but I think, based on the failures of MacLean and Langenbrunner, that this group of guys needs more of an “in your face” guy who isn’t afraid to call people out in the locker room, light fires under people’s behinds and whom the kids will listen to because they respect/admire him. I don’t know for fact that he isn’t that guy because, unfortunately, I’ve never been in the Devils locker-room, but he doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy.
The obvious question, then, is: Who is that guy?
I’m honestly not sure. Colin White perhaps? Marty? Obviously, neither are long-term solutions as they’re both on the downside of their careers, but nothing says they have to be. Both have been to the top of the proverbial mountain and played with the team’s greatest Captain in Stevens and so know what it takes. Guys like Parise and Kovalchuk are natural leaders, but (crosses fingers) once the team is beyond the first or second round of the playoffs they’re as green as Josefson and Fayne.
I realize, of course, that experience isn’t the only way to choose an effective Captain (see: Toews, Jonathan; Crosby, Sidney), but neither should it be overlooked.
If Zach does receive the Captaincy, I think he’ll do a fine job, but I’m not one who assumes, based on my limited (read: non-existent) knowledge of what goes on behind closed doors, that he’s the best choice.

A locker room vote is probably the way to go. Who better than the guys in the room to decide who their leader is? I would assume it would end up being Kovy, Zach, or Elias.
Maybe Zajac is a dark horse? Or Tallinder?
There’s so many young Captains around the league, I would go with Zach, but like I said, only if he signs long term.
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
Steps to name new captain
1. Hire a new coach
2. Lou persuades (by any means possible) the new coach to name Parise Captain
3. Knowing he’ll be captain, lock Parise up for 7-8 years (this allows him to know he has a UFA coming before the dreaded 35 year mark, 7 years makes it 33, and if 35+ contracts survive into the next CBA, I doubt it would fall to 33+)
Like elesias said, we don’t know what goes on t=in the room, but if Parise WANTS to be captain, there aren’t many obviously better choices, so use it as the karat that gets him to stay long-term. (And I know I used karat wrong there, but come on, karats are worth a whole lot more than carrots.)

If lou hires Hitchcock, he might seriosly consider Zajac as capain. From watching the Canada games at the worlds from what I hear Hitchcock apsolutely loves Zajac and gave him an A. Every game I watched, the comentators were talking about how Hitchcock had nothing but good things to say about Zajac. He called him posistionally perfect everywhere on the ice. So if a coach wants his team to have his players to play like there captian than he would want them to play like Zajac. I still think Parise should be named capain though but Zajac should get an A because he does so many diferent things for them and is so valuable. I also think Elias should get the other A if he doesn’t end up being traded to free up some cap space.
Elias has his NMC, I highly doubt he’s going to be agreeing to go anywhere

In the new Rich Chere article he talks about how the devils may take zach for arbitration, my question is, what are your thoughts about that?
When I look at it there is one positive, that he will definitely be a devil next season, but so many worse negatives that makes arbitration seem ridiculous.
Parise would get super annoyed at the team using that he played 13 games this season for him to get paid less money, while they can do this when they talk to Zach about a contract, doing it infront of an arbitrator has a sour taste to it. Secondly taking Zach to arbitration not only gets him angry but also makes him a UFA next year, which is terrible considering the amount that the best American skater can make.
I think he’s jumping ship here. I don’t know how the odds of going to arbitration have become increasingly likely. His injury will not be a long term issue. It’s possible sure, if talks aren’t good. They haven’t begun talking for all we know (last report was Monday).

I think it’s way too early to worry about arbitration. Historically with this organization, players who go to arbitration don’t stick around regardless of who it is.
I also think it’s way to early to worry about Parise staying until it’s closer to the date when RFAs have to be qualified – which escapes me at the moment.

Arbitratiomn
Can you guys explain the Arbitration? I know it makes the deal worth 1 year, but what else happens, how is a ruling made, ect
by Marty's Better #30 on Apr 22, 2011 9:13 PM EDT reply actions
Actually, there are options for two-year contracts awarded in arbitration. If Parise is the one to instigate an arbitration filing, the Devils have the option whether they ask for one year or two. If the Devils qualify Parise and then file for arbitration themselves, the option goes to Parise.
I won’t go into the nuts-and-bolts of what is permissible “evidence” and conduct in arbitration or all the other legalese. If that sort of thing interests you, the Collective Bargaining Agreement spells it out in rigorous detail, starting on Page 52 (Section 12).
Suffice to say, the Arbitrator has a brief window (usually 48 hours) after the hearing to determine a contract figure. Unlike Major League Baseball, the arbitrator is not bound to pick either the player’s number or the team’s number…. but can pick a number anywhere in between if he so desires. After the ruling is made, the team then has a brief window (usually 48 hours) to accept or reject the ruling. Accepting the ruling registers the contract under the salary cap rules, rejecting the ruling allows the team to walk away from the deal and the player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent immediately. This “walk away” provision only applies to Player-Elected Arbitration (as opposed to Club-Elected Arbitration).
At even strength if your on the ice and your team gets a goal you get a + if the other team scores you get a minus. You can only go up or down at even strength, so 5 on 5 4 on 4 or (rarely) 3 on 3. Powerplays do not affect +/-. I do believe though that if your team scores a shorthanded goal the players on the ice get a + and the players on the powerplay that got scored on get a . I might be wrong on that, but that is basically how +/ works.
Yes, shorthanded goals count, but not power play goals.
Also, the ratings are cumulative so if Player A is on the ice for 3 of his own team’s goals and 2 against, he ends the night a +1.
It’s meant as a tool to judge a player’s effectiveness, but it is not the most accurate measure of individual performance.
Question regarding +/-
If a team gets a short handed goal scored against, does the player who originally got the penalty get a -?

Penalty shot question
When a penalty shot is awarded. Does the player that was fouled have to take the shot or is it a coaching decision (but usually the fouled guy gets to take it)
by Devils_from_Seattle on Apr 27, 2011 12:17 AM EDT reply actions
Penalty shots are Rule 25 of the NHL Rules
When a penalty shot is awarded, it is usually because a specific player was denied the opportunity to score by a penalty comitted against him, specifically. In that case, the fouled player is resignated by the Ref and he gets the shot. If he got hurt before he could take the shot, the Captain selects the shooter from guys on the ice at the time the foul was committed. In all other cases where a penalty shot was awarded, the Captain of the non-offending team selects the shooter from guys on the ice at the time.

I got this question from a glitch in NHL 11… If there is a penalty shot ab out to be called but the player keeps the puck and say his team keeps possession for 10 seconds and the period runs out, does he take the penalty shot after the period? When? In NHL 11 you never get to take it…
It’s not obvious in the way this is phrased, but I interpret that a delay is allowable under your described scenario and the penalty shot is still taken:
25.7 Timing – If the foul upon which the penalty shot is based occurs
during actual playing time, the penalty shot shall be awarded and
taken immediately in the usual manner notwithstanding any delay
occasioned by a slow whistle by the Referee to allow play to continue
until the attacking side has lost possession of the puck to the
defending side, which delay results in the expiry of the regular playing
time in any period.
The time required for the taking of a penalty shot shall not be
included in the regular playing time or overtime.

After following this site for a season i can say that “we” dont really like Gery Bettman that much. Why is that ? Is there a bad history with him and the devils. Was he the force behind the Ilia’s contract penalty ?
I like the guy, from the interviews i have heard he seems like a solid guy. (or am i just completly mistaken with my perception of the dislike)
thanks

I think most Devils fans don’t like him because of the league’s petulance regarding the Kovalchuk signing. The “circumenvention” hearings, pushing through addition of a rule to the CBA because the league was caught without an actual age/contract length limit in 2005, the punishment based said hearings (a forfeit third rounder this year, a first rounder to be forfeited at a later date), and taking incredibly long to approve the second contract. Throw in the other general perception about him (he’s supposedly not a hockey guy, he’s the cause for the league’s problems, etc. etc.) and I can see why there’s this dislike for Bettman.
I don’t have any real beef with him outside of the outrageous actions of the league in this past summer, but I really can’t grouse about it nearly a year later.

Not only what John said, but in 95 it was thought that Bettman wanted the Devils to leave and turn into a franchise in Nashville. There is a youtube video about it and how the crowd says something against Bettman. It’s funny because that’s the year that we won the cup, and the Devils seem to have worked out well in New Jersey.
I think most hockey fans in general are not huge Bettman fans and the consensus seems to be that he isn’t a great commish. Nearly leading the league to it’s demise in the mid 2000’s will do that, I suppose.
But yeah as the others have mentioned, the ‘95 relocation rumors and this past summer’s Kovy debacle are the Devils-specific reasons for the disdain. Here’s video evidence of Devils fans’ feelings about Bettman back in ’95 (deserved or not).
The 1995 relocation issue had more to do with McMullen playing hardball with the NJSEA than anything else. The lease was up and he was upset about the terms, which supposedly outed him $11 million. This NY Times article from July 3, before a new lease was eventually agreed upon, gets into the details of the matter. It was all McMullen v. NJSEA; and in retrospect, the relocation threat was little more than hot air; seeming like much more than it actually was. Page 3 of the article describes how meaningless the threat was.

Agreed
Bettman, as is customary, was obviously just the one who fans scapegoated for the whole debacle. A commissioner will always be a popular target for fans battling relocation rumors. I’m sure Thrashers fans are not very high on Bettman right now, regardless of how much he really could have done in that situation.
Ok, this is a question that Ive thought about for a while, if you buy out a player, and have a hit on the cap because of it, what if you sign him again? Is there like a magical voodoo two cap hits for one player??
It has already happened, and is still ongoing. Daniel Alfredsson is in just this situation, although you might have to query a devoted Senators fan as to the circumstances of the buyout. If I had to guess — and mind you, this is simply deduction with nothing to back it up — there was probably an agreement to buy him out and bring him back at a lower price to be more cap friendly and allow the Sens to build a more competitive team.
ELC contracts and slide rule?
ILWT staff: What are the general terms of an Entry Level Contract?
Does the amount given on an Entry Level Contract have anything to do where player was drafted? sort of like a wage scale for drafted players.
How does the Slide rule apply and when does the terms in length of contract begin?
Say player x signs contract for 3 years but doesn’t make big club until year 3. Does player become a RFA or do the term 3 years only apply once player makes big club?
Thanx for your reply
9.3 Entry Level Compensation Limits.
(a) The maximum annual aggregate Paragraph 1 NHL Salary, Signing
Bonuses and games played bonuses permitted to be paid to a Group 1 Player shall be as
follows:
2011 US$ 925,000 (including bonuses)
Nothing I can see in the CBA relating to draft position
9.1 Applicability and Duration.
(d) (i) In the event that an 18 year old or 19 year old Player signs an SPC
with a Club but does not play at least ten (10) NHL Games in the first season under that
SPC, the term of his SPC and his number of years in the Entry Level System shall be
extended for a period of one (1) year, except that this automatic extension will not apply
to a Player who is 19 according to Section 9.2 by virtue of turning 20 between September
16 and December 31 in the year in which he first signs an SPC.
(ii) In the event that a Player signs his first SPC at age 18 and has had
his SPC extended pursuant to Subsection (i), and such Player does
not play at least ten (10) NHL Games in the second season under
that SPC, then the term of his SPC and his number of years in the
Entry Level System shall be extended for one (1) additional year.
Unless a Player and Club expressly agree to the contrary, in the
event a Player’s SPC is extended an additional year in accordance
with this Subsection, all terms of the SPC, with the exception of
Signing Bonuses, but including Paragraph 1 Salary, games played
bonuses and Exhibit 5 bonuses, shall be extended; provided,
however, that the Player’s Paragraph 1 Salary shall be extended in
all circumstances.
So if he doesn’t make the team until the third year, there are still 3 years on the contract the way I read it.

Need to lose weight?
Sort of. If a player signs an ELC at age 18 but doesn’t play more than 10 NHL games, then it slides. As in, the whole three year deal just moves back a season. If it happens at age 19, then it can slide again. Once the player is 20, then the ELC length begins regardless of whether he is in NHL or not. ELCs end with the player going RFA, regardless of where he is at the time.
Now, an ELC is only 3 years if he signs at age 18 through 21. If he signs at age 22 or 23, then it’s a 2 year deal. 24 or older and it’s only one year. Players 25 or older are not subject to ELCs unless they are 25-27 year old players from Europe – they have to go through a one-year deal.
As far as how much a draft pick gets paid, that’s up to the team and the prospect. There is a maximum salary and maximum amount of bonuses, but there’s no wage scale. Generally, higher picks will have an ELC worth closer to the maximum in both than lower ones.

Colin Campbell
Now that Colin Campbell is no longer the dean of discipline, what are his odds at having a shot at the Devils coaching job?
I mean when he was Head coach if the Rangers he did a pretty decent job with a bunch of over the hill players and had his hand tied when it came to using younger players.
almost zero
He was league disciplinarian for 13 years; probably too long away from coaching to be able to get back into it successfully. The league has changed a lot.

His odds are slim to none. Also, he’s still working with the NHL – he’s just not doling out inconsistently ruled and sometimes downright stupid disciplinary decisions anymore.

Rule 48 and other questions
Ok I was desperate and needed a hockey fix so I was watching the Stanley Cup playoffs. While I was watching (Game 3) Rome hit Horton pretty hard and they kept mentioning rule 48. Obviously based off the hit I can tell that it deals with blind side hits but what are the exceptions? Would this hit fall under rule 48 also I thought there was a rule that says you cannot jump off the ice to hit a player. Am I correct or mistaken? And one last question. Is there any possibility that Brodeur would captain next year? I think it would be great and I know goalies have been captain before but would it be a waste of giving Brodeur that roll because he would retire in a year or 2? Thanks a bunch. GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!
Rule 48 and Other Answers
First, to quote from the NHL rulebook:
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.
48.2 Minor Penalty – There is no provision for a minor penalty for this rule.
48.3 Major Penalty – For a violation of this rule, a major penalty shall be assessed (see 48.4).
48.4 Game Misconduct – An automatic game misconduct penalty shall be assessed whenever a major penalty is assessed under this rule.
48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.
I thought there was a rule that says you cannot jump off the ice to hit a player
When one blatantly leaves his feet to inflict a hit, that most often falls under Charging. If one leaves his feet to inflict a hit into the boards, it often falls under Boarding. It isn’t necessarily a Rule 48 infraction, although the two often do go together.
Is there any possibility that Brodeur would captain next year?
It’s possible in a theoretical sense, but it is extremely rare to see a goaltender serve as a captain in the modern NHL. Roberto Luongo served as Vancouver captain for a year, but he’s the exception. When you mix in the captain’s on-ice duties (communication between the team and the referee), that’s something that doesn’t mesh particularly well with being a goalie.
Thanks a bunch that really helped me out :)

Devils TV broadcast
I’m thinking about cutting off the cable, but then I’m perplexed at how to watch the Devils games. I think MSG family does not broadcast over-the-air. Also, NHL Gamecenter live is out of question since I live in NJ. Are there any alternatives I’m missing?
I get MSG and their family over DirecTV. That’s a good non-cable alternative.

Speaking of TV
Is there any way to watch Devils games live online? I’m going to school in Scotland next year so I don’t think I have any other options.
NHL Gamecenter Live
Here’s the link. It’s a bit of an investment (like $150 range for the year) but i got it when I lived in Austin and will be getting it again when I go back in the fall.
Actually, scratch that
Did a little more research and its not available abroad. They refer people living in Europe to the “ESPN Player.” Here’s the info, courtesy of the NHL Gamecenter FAQ:
I’m traveling abroad. Can I watch live games with NHL GameCenter LIVE™ while I’m away?
Currently, NHL GameCenter LIVE™ is fully available throughout the U.S. and Canada with limited availability internationally (everywhere except Europe and the Middle East).
Fans in Europe (except Italy and Russia) or the Middle East may watch live games with a subscription to ESPN Player. Go to: espnplayer.com and choose the NHL Center Ice package to get live games on demand.
Talking Red
So when is the next installment of Talking Red going to be on?
There might be something in a few weeks, then on hiatus until the next season.
