How will Lou upgrade the D?
In this article by Gulitti (http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/fireice/comments/lamoriello_will_try_to_re-sign_parise_as_expeditious_as_possible_wants_to_r/) Lou acknowledges that the team's defense corps needs some improvement. People say puck moving defenseman, but for this article I will say its better that they look into getting a solid two way defender. After the jump Ill explore a few options the Devils may have, including one that involved some thinking outside of the box.
The first option is of course through free agency. This link to capgeek provides a list of all upcomign UFA defenseman, listed in order of their salary this past season. (http://www.capgeek.com/free_agents.php?year_id=2011&team_id=-1&position_id=D&fa_type_id=2) There are several players Id be okay with the team acquiring, but remember, the Devils do have some cap restraints, regardless of if the cap goes up by three million. I know many people want Joni Pitkanen, but he would probably require the Devils to do some sort of a trade to fit him under the cap. Kaberle is another defenseman that could help the offensive side of the game, but again would probably come at a considerable cap hit.
So if the Devils want to aquire one of the top UFA defenseman, they will have to A) spend some money and B) trade someone to make cap space. When something like this happens, teams know they can low ball you since you are the one in bad position. A similar thing happened in 2007 when Lou traded a first round pick and Vladimir Malakhov to San Jose for peanuts to get under the cap. So then how can the Devils make a signing and a trade that will both be beneficial for the team? My solution is to combine the two and bring in a player while shedding somem salary in the process.
(note: the deal I am about to present is somewhat of a unicorn deal, but not totally impossible so just keep an open mind)
This link is a list of all UFA defenseman for July 2012. (http://www.capgeek.com/free_agents.php?year_id=2012&team_id=-1&position_id=D&fa_type_id=2) This list has some more players that are still in there mid twenties than this upcoming offseason will. There are also some better players compared to this year. One I would like to point to is Ryan Suter. His cap hit for the 2011-2012 season will be 3.5 million, so if the Devils were to send some salary the other way, it would not increase the cap total that much. Also, when he becomes a UFA, the Devils will have considerable space in 2012 to resign him. Of course the first thing youre wondering is why would Nashville be willing to part with him. Well, there are several reasons.
The obvious one is Nashville's financial constraints. David Poile has done a wonderful job building and rebuilding this team every year with a limited budget. Shea Weber is set to become an RFA, and will require a hefty raise if they wish to keep his services. I dont know if Mr. Poile believes he can keep both players with his budget, especially with the emergence of other defenseman in the organization, such as Cody Franson.
Second Reason:(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Hamhuis) This article cites how Poile tried to get a first round pick and a prospect for Dan Hamhuis last year when his contract was expiring, but could not. He did end up getting Ryan Parent for his negotiating rights, but still probably did not receive as much as he would have liked. I think it would be in his best interest to avoid this again, and try to get top value for his player if he does not intend to keep him.
Third Reason: This goes with the first one. Nashville just acquired Mike Fisher this season, and his contract, with a cap hit of 4.2 million goes into next season. That is more money he wont have in his budget.
Final Reason: He already has a good working relationship with the Devils based on last years trade involving Jason Arnott. I dont see any reason he would minde working with them on another deal.
Proposed Deal: Ryan Suter to New Jersey in exchange for David Clarkson, Alexander Urbom, a second round pick (year to be determined), and a fifth round pick (year to be determined) They could also include a conditional pick if he is resgined by the Devils.
This deal could work because Nashville is shedding some salary, while also acquiring a player who is signed for another two years. They also acquire some futures with this. It works for the Devils because they are getting rid of a player who probably will never get the ice time he needs to develop with the Devils, and are only increasing their cap money by around 900 thousand. After next year they will have plenty of space to retain his services. Lou probably does not want to give up any more picks after everything that has happend this season, but if he can acquire a player of this caliber, he should go for it. I know Mr. Poile would probably require a first round pick for Ryan Suter, but I think he may be cautious after not being able to secure one for Dan Hamhuis.
I know the deal needs tinkering to be perfect, but I think it could work. What do you think? Is this type of deal were possible would you say it's beneficial to both sides?

I highly doubt Nashville’s trading Suter.

They might be willing to listen to offers. Weber is due a raise of $2-3M this year and Rinne a raise of another $2M next year. They also have important prospects like Jonathan Blum, Colin Wilson, and Blake Geoffrion to re-sign next year. They’ll probably be letting JP Dumont walk to free up some cap space, but they could collect a lot of nice assets in return for trading Suter now. They also have some nice up-and-coming D prospects like Franson, Blum, and Ryan Ellis.
I think they’ll consider buying out Dumont or trading him now. They weren’t happy with him late this season, and he’s been a healthy scratch for much of the recent past, including the first round.

Here’s a unicorn deal: let’s trade for Shea Weber’s rights so we don’t lose 5 first rounders and sign Weber. :)

I think if we started shopping this years 1st along with Urbom and maybe a late pick, we’d be able to begin talking about getting Suter.
You would seriously give up our fourth overall draft pick PLUS more for Ryan Suter? I mean, he’s good, but not that good…

You seem to overestimate the value of a first rounder, especially one in a supposedly weak draft year.
Suter is an established player who can do 20+ minutes a night. Urbom and the 1st (though I’d rather it be Clarky and the 1st) are unproven assets. Has Urbom shown potential? Yes definitely. Do we have the chance to get a great prospect with the pick? Of course. Have we reached the point where we can confidently say we have two NHL defensemen? Not in the slightest.
Suter is only 26 and has consistently put up 30-40 points on Nashville, a notoriously defensive team like our own. He’s a proven commodity.
There is absolutely no way Suter is worth that much. Hell, Zach Parise isn’t worth that much. Both players are 1 year away from unrestricted free agency.
A 1st rounder known to be in the top 5 is worth a lot. It’s a very different story from getting a 1st rounder from a playoff team. A team with the 20th overall pick probably couldn’t even package it with another 1st rounder to jump as high as 4th.
I like Suter but he’s not worth more than the 4th overall pick. They might be of comparable value.
with the cap limits we have trades are going to be leveraged against us. If LL is able to improve this D then we 1st need to clear space by 1. hoping cap goes up and 2. possibly buying out Salvador’s contract and 3. possibly try to unload Zubes with prospects (hopefully not to painful). Probably even if we do that they still have to take care of in-house biznis of signing a RFA and a UFA namely Zach and Andy before we can even try to improve the D. The more I look at the numbers LL will have to have a great summer if hes going to be able to address the D this summer. I’m resigned to taking care of ZP, getting Andy back on the cheap and be in better position the following year by playing the young guys on D and knowing what we actually have going forward than guessing or speculating. It’ll probably mean no cup contending team but one that should be competitive and hopefully make the playoffs?
Hard to say how much Poile will want in return for Suter. He’s a very shrewd GM and I’m sure he wants to keep Suter badly. Suter would be a great fit on pretty much any team though, and Zach Parise called him the smartest player he’s ever played with.
A deal including Urbom and Clarkson is a good start. Urbom has developed really nicely – even though he was drafted in the third round I’d peg his current value as equivalent to a high second round or low first round pick. I just don’t see Urbom, Clarkson, and a second being enough for Suter, though – I think Nashville needs about two first-round equivalents out of the deal.
Something I’d consider is, if the Devils do draft Couturier, they would suddenly have a lot of strength at center with Couturier, Zajac, and Josefson. I would then consider parting with Henrique, who I think Nashville would love, and who is comparable to a second rounder right now. I don’t feel Huberdeau will definitely play center at the NHL level – he might, but I’m not willing to bet on it.
Suter for Urbom, Henrique, Clarkson, and a second round pick provides Nashville with the value of two first round picks (I think). Devils would get a great young defenseman that helps the team now and who they can afford to re-sign next summer.
Guys seriously unless Greene isn’t retained you’re not going to see much if any change on the Defense. And even then it isn’t going to be for a big name defensemen. There isn’t really the cap room, especially with Salvador’s status up in the air.
I predict going into the season you’re going to see Greene (if retained, which he should be), Tallinder, Volchenkov and White The final 3 slots I imagine will be a battle between Fayne, Taormina, Urbom, Salvador and Salmela. Salvador’s health is up in the air and he may not even be in the mix. I also think Salmela will be retained and (should be) given a two-way deal. He proved enough for me in the second half that he could be a decent depth defenseman playing at the bottom pairing if needed.
But seriously the improvements on the D are probably only going to just come internally if players step up their game. I’m hoping that Taormina and Fayne weren’t flashes in the pan and build upon what we saw in 2010-2011. I also hope we get a great full season out of Tallinder and not just a good half. Things like that and our D while mostly having the same names will almost be like a new unit.
(a) Yes, retaining Greene and making no changes to the D is by far the most likely scenario.
(b) Not retaining Greene and signing no one in free agency and winging it with the kids is the second most likely scenario.
© Doesn’t mean we can’t discuss other options.
(d) Ryan Suter is already signed for 2011-12 at a $3.5M cap hit, so trading Clarkson and not retaining Greene means Suter could fit under the cap. He becomes a UFA in 2012.
(e) Discussing this is more fun than debating what Greene’s maximum tolerable cap hit is.
(f) This is the best suggestion anyone has thrown out there for tangibly improving our D.
Poile is not Glen Sather. He is a smart and capable GM. He’s not trading Suter especially not for Clarkson or any of the packages outlined here. The only realistic scenario I see Suter moving to NJ is for the #4 pick. And if so would you rather have Suter or a chance at Larsson?
mmmmm……..thats some good koolaid Z What flavor is that the- same story since 07-
I’d like to share your optimism on the young guys Fayne,Taormina, Urbom but the names Oduya,Greene and Fraser all seem to pop in my head when we see something and then the next year these guys on D take a step back. Hey I like the potential of all the young guys we have but thats because they should have an upside; they’re young guys who showed promise. Unfortunately the only way the D is better if LL pulls one out of his Ash by a trade or clearing enuff cap space or more likely A train, Tallinder, Whitey all play phenomanally and one or two of these young guys step up. otherwise we might have the same scenario next year for the 3rd x.
This paragraph gave me the worst headache ever.

1) Fraser… no one expected much from him and well what the problem?
2) You’re complaining about Greene not stepping up when almost everyone didn’t this past season?
3) Oduya netted us Kovalchuk.
Again i’m not saying our D is unbelievable. I’m saying don’t look for any dramatic changes to it’s make up. That said it is a solid if not spectacular unit and all we should really hop for in terms of improvement is some of these guys step it up.
3) Oduya netted us Kovalchuk.
Actually, Bergfors, a 1st, and Cormier netted us Kovalchuk. Oduya was arguably zero value – a guy paid like a second-pairing defenseman with offensive upside who wasn’t living up to his contract.
Really? He’s currently on the Thrashers roster unlike everyone else. Don’t devalue his worth just because he turned in a disappointing half a season after he signed a new deal. I’m certain sending over an NHL capable defender who could play in the top 4 in no way had “zero value.”
Oduya is not a $3.5 million/season defenseman. No way, no chance, no how, no sir. While Oduya in a vacuum is not a “zero value” player, that contract is a negative value because Oduya will not play up to it unless he gets dramatically better.
Yes, Johnny Oduya is on the Thrashers’ roster, and should be again next season. Considering the Thrashers have a budget — and not a large one at that — is his presence going to cost the team another player they’d prefer to keep?
The Thrashers are verbally shopping him, and according to TSN, have been since the deadline.
