The In Lou We Trust 2011 NHL Draft Open Thread

It's finally here.  In a year in which Devils fans were held mentally hostage by the Ilya Kovalchuk signing, saw the Devils play horrible hockey for the first half of the year only to come up short on a late playoff run, cap problems, star player injuries, whispers of ownership issues, etc., something good finally happens.  The Devils get to add a stud of a prospect to their organization.  Drafting in the top five for the first time since 1991 when they selected Scott Niedermayer, the Devils will have the 4th selection in tonight's draft.  The draft begins at 7:00pm on VERSUS and TSN and this is your thread to talk about all things Devils, NHL draft or trades.

Who will the Devils select?  It's still up in the air.  Unless they trade up, the Devils are forced to wait as Edmonton, Colorado and Florida make selections before them.

Will it be Adam Larsson?  Can the Swedish defenseman fall all the way to pick #4?

Will it be Gabriel Landeskog, the most NHL ready of the bunch?

Will it be Sean Couturier who has seemed to fall out of what many believe are the 'top 4' players available in the draft?

Like you I have went back and forth on this question many times over the past few months.  In a few hours we should finally know.

Note that any 'rumors' or news posted in the thread should be linked and please only utilize real sources.  Tom Gulitti, Rich Chere, TSN, ESPN...the legit outlets.  Please don't post any news that uses any rumor scoring system or one where the source was once incarcerated.  Also, let's keep the discussion relevant for today's activities. But also feel free to discuss trades that occurred yesterday.

That said, enjoy the draft experience!  Hopefully this is the Devils last top 10 pick for a long time.  I will be manning the thread tonight and will create a new post for discussion once the draft begins and then a new post once the Devils make their selection (or if they make a trade). We will get reaction from experts around the web, ILWT staff and those at the draft party once the Devils pick, so keep checking ILWT for updates as the day progresses!

So far efforts have been good, over $36,000 has been raised for a procedure estimated to be $100,000.

For all those interested, Silver Seven had a pretty good article about trading up in the draft. I doubt the Devils are trading up, but it’s still worth a read.

I actually would rather them move up and try to get Larsson as opposed to settling for Huberdeau.

me too. I’d rather have the puck moving defenseman rather than the left winger who’s supposed to be a center but probably can’t play center…

I mean… if the Devils really wanted to replace Elias…

Huberdeau

is the one ‘Top player’ I do not want the Devils to draft at #4. I do not trust that he will be able to be a productive NHL’er just yet. Id rather Couturier if Larsson, Nugent-Hopkins and Landeskog are taken.

That article was very good. Still amazing what Burke did back in 99.

So unless it’s to just get a second rounder, there really is no need to deal with Ottawa and risk the Islanders picking the player you might want @ #5.

I anticipate being pleased with whoever NJ picks unless it’s something dumb like Hamilton over Larsson or a really far reach at #4.

Not only we’ll have a draft, apparently we’ll learn Winnipeg’s team name tonight before they make their pick. Should I call them the Whatevers anyway?

Hey everyone

So pumped for tonight. I’ll be at work all day and night (which is all I seem to do now these days) so I’ll be making regular checks here to see who the Devils get.

My recent in-activeness around here should cease soon. I kind of miss everyone…what an unusual feeling.

I vote Sweden, Larsson would be the holy puck-mover of Newark or Landekog would perfectly fit in the Devils system.

So, it’ll be Couturier, I think both Larsson & Landeskog will be picked before our turn.

He’s unlike most of the rest of their Defense, in that he can actually be an effective shut-down defenseman. At least, that’s how Tampa justified it.

by Skuba7 on Jun 24, 2011 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I woke up today liking our odds of landing Larsson. Dale Tallon, the GM in Florida, is sounding defeated in his attempts to snag the #1 pick, which should mean that Edmonton is taking RNH. More pundits seem to say that Colorado is high on Landeskog and very few are saying they’ll take Larsson. And I think Florida will take a forward, probably Huberdeau.

I’m rooting for Larsson or Couturier! Or a trade down to #6 in exchange for a second rounder and picking up Strome there.

by dr(d)evil on Jun 24, 2011 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Good. FLA not trading up means they’re probably taking Huberdeau.

your opinion

Larsson seems ready for the big league, so if we draft him, do you think we still need to re-sign Andy Greene ? I mean if Andy’s re-signed we probably won’t have enough cap-space left for both of them with that present line-up.

In Lou We Trust: SBN Blog of the New Jersey Devils

by Tom Stivali on Jun 24, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

The increased cap space does bring up the possibility of being able to play the player we draft tonight if Salvador is waived. I think Larsson would benefit from an extra year in Sweden, and the Devils have no track record of playing prospects immediately after they were drafted. Then again, the Devils haven’t picked this high in such a long time, it’s hard to say what they might do.

by dr(d)evil on Jun 24, 2011 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the one thing we can count on is Florida going with an offensive player—everything ive heard has them going with Landeskog or the best available centerman on account of they used their top pick the last 2 years to draft defense. So if Larsson gets by the Avalanche at #2, he should be ours. If he gets taken #2, I hope the Panthers take Huberdeau and leave Landeskog for us. That being said, I’d be happy with any one of those 3 players (and RNH obviously but no chance with that)

by JoeyV on Jun 24, 2011 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

RNH is definitely gone by the 4th pick. I see Colorado being the team mainly shaping who the Devils will wind up with. Florida will probably pick Huberdeau if Tallon was trying that hard to get a scoring center in RNH. Simply put, if Colorado takes Larsson, we get Landeskog, or vice versa. Landeskog can play RW so that’s not an issue at all.

Honestly, I’m not wary about any picks besides Strome/Huberdeau, Strome more so. He dissappeared in the playoffs and both only have one good season under their belts. At least Huberdeau kept his run going. Look at players like Cheechoo. We don’t want another one of those.

by skly27 on Jun 24, 2011 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Right now, I want either Landeskog or Larsson. If the top three are RNH, Landeskog, Larsson, I wouldn’t mind trading our 4th to Ottawa, and picking up their 6th AND getting their 21st in the process.

At four the Senators can snag Huberdeau, and at five the Islanders can get their man, Hamilton.

Then we could snag up Courturier or Strome at number 6, and get a Dman, such as Joseph Morrow at 21.

Again, I would only do this if RNH, Larsson, and Landeskog go in the top 3.

by Marty's Better #30 on Jun 24, 2011 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

I am not sold on the Islanders going Hamilton. I think they may surprise with a forward.

If you look at the link Kevin put above about draft day trades, it might be hard to get that second first round pick without giving something back in return

I love Henrique BUT

by Marty's Better #30 on Jun 24, 2011 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I absolutely do NOT make that trade. Henrique is on the cusp of making it to the NHL, and might be here this season if Lou manages to move a forward or two. I don’t know who we’d manage to get with the 21st pick, but I have no reason to believe he’d be any better a player…. plus he’d likely be further away from contributing than Adam Henrique.

I’d just as soon take two-for-one, thank you. Get Ottawa’s second-round pick in return for swapping first-round picks and call it a day.

re

I am 90% sure we will grab Larsson or Hamilton. The other 10% says the only way they take a forward is if Larsson is gone, They may look at RNH or Landeskog if they are still there. I am against Couterier. I have seen too many reports about his need to be a better skater. In this league, you need to be fast and agile to keep up with linemates and generate offense. We don’t need someone with Colin White speed trying to center the likes of Kovy/Parise/Elias/ Tedenby.

by JerzeeD on Jun 24, 2011 2:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

re Couturier:

I’ve read that his top-end speed is pretty decent. He needs to work on better mechanics for the first couple steps to get up to top speed more quickly. Reportedly not that hard to fix. If they can trade back a couple spots and still land him I’d be pretty happy.

by Matt V on Jun 24, 2011 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

TSN reports that Ryan Smyth is likely headed to Calgary. This might also explain why Robin Regehr was asked to waive his NMC.

I think sending away one of their top defensemen absolutely impacts whether or not Larsson will go at #2. This clearly wasn’t a salary shedding maneuver as they need help just to get to the cap floor. Why else would they make their defense worse unless they had immediate plans to make it better? To me this shows they want Larsson at #2, which I hope results in us getting Landeskog at #4

by JoeyV on Jun 24, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

So say Landeskog went first, they would pass on RNH? I just don’t think it’s related. They still might pick Larsson but I don’t think the trade of a guy with one year left on his deal means they are going in a certain direction.

Considering the astronomical numbers Montreal and Tampa just handed out, I think this is a reasonable move for the Maple Leafs to make. Sure, it costs them a pick, but a mildly overpaid Liles for one year is much better than trying to get that puck-moving D-man on the free agent market. If Markov is worth three years at $5.75 million per, and Brewer is worth four years at $4 million per, what will the “solid second-pairing” guys like Andy Greene fetch come July 1? How many years will it take, and how many of those guys will be worth the contracts in question?

Also, now that Brian Burke has addressed his defense corps (even if there’s still an RFA by the name of Luke Schenn to take care of), he can focus his time and dollars towards other free agents. I suspect Burke is already preparing to camp out on Brad Richards’ doorstep so he can be the first guy to tender a contract offer.

Murphy?! Really?! I know he is the most gifted D-man offensively… but I am surprised the Devs are looking at him for his lack of shutdown ability.. I suppose if Kovalchuk can back check, then I suppose he could be taught.

Yes, he is going to be a great 2nd liner some day.

Wow

well, I also dont think the Rangers would draft him this high #15

I missed it. What did they do?

Tribute to Boogaard and his brother Aaron made the pick.

They brought Derek Boogaard’s brother up to make their selection after sharing a moment with the growd in Minnesota.

damn….seems like a pretty solid deal except I think SJ overpaid just a wee bit

by Devils1192 on Jun 24, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Im just surprised SJ did it considering Boyle is there already. But I think SJ did just fine with the trade. The 1st Rounder is at #28, almost a 2nd.

by Skuba7 on Jun 24, 2011 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I mean is seems very borderline equal/overpayment. I think it really depends if Burns can stay healthy and consistent. I’m happy it wasn’t the Devils who were rumored cause we would have to overpay as well

by Devils1192 on Jun 24, 2011 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

One roster player, one minor prospect and a late 1st Rd pick and get back just what we need most and a 2nd Rd pick? Not bad at all.

If Burns doesn’t work out in San Jose, they can quite readily flip him at the deadline or let him walk away after the season. They’re loading up on the back end, which is considered a reasonable way to build a team. Considering how close they’ve been to the Finals in recent years, they might as well keep tinkering and see if they can’t find a move or two to put them over the top.

This also means Ian White will not be a Shark next season.

by acasser on Jun 24, 2011 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

For sure on Ian White…

by Skuba7 on Jun 24, 2011 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree and that’s all true, I’m just saying from my point of view it seemed a bit too much.

by Devils1192 on Jun 24, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ve seen in the past few days just how crazy/stupid/expensive the market is going to be for defensemen, if you’re using Andrei Markov and Eric Brewer as a recent measuring stick.

For the same reasons I applauded Toronto for making the trade they did for Liles, I’ll applaud this deal. Better to overpay a little in trade than play Free Agency Frenzy where Door #1 is “overpay a defenseman for several years” and Door #2 is “get left without a dance partner at all”.

by acasser on Jun 24, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

And Devin Setoguchi…. who just signed an extension.

Interesting. One wonders how Setoguchi must feel, having signed with San Jose only to be traded…. unless that was part of the deal.

by acasser on Jun 24, 2011 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, wonder if he was told prior.

by Skuba7 on Jun 24, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He should call Jeff Carter, they can trade sob stories.

Don’t forget Honorless Captain Elbows. The three of them can share some tea, coookies, and Kleenex.

I hope Brian Burke washed his hands....

…. considering how many 2011 1st-round picks he’s had his grubby paws on now. Although, considering his track record from the article Kevin linked to way up at the top of this comments section about the price of moving draft picks at the top of the first round, should we be at all surprised?

by acasser on Jun 24, 2011 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

I see the Leafs moved up to 22nd overall with the 30th and 39th picks given to the Ducks. Let’s see who Burkie takes and whether he jaws out a GM beforehand.

Toronto takes Tyler Biggs

I’m just going to quote Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus from his Twitter account:

So you gave up a high 2nd to move up a few spots for a low upside, heavy physical traits guy. I dont disagree with this whatsoever.

Womp womp

by acasser on Jun 24, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and the Truculence Plan has so far yield little gain for Toronto.

First round over

Devils get Larsson, Rocco Grimaldi remains available, and so we wait until 11 AM EST tomorrow for Rounds 2-7. I’ll leave this open until tomorrow morning. We’ll have another open thread for tomorrow’s action.

On the behalf of Tom and the other writers, thank you all for commenting and reading ILWT today.
