New Jersey Devils Still Pushing Season Tickets, Scarves for Supporters

While the majority of writing and discussion on the site over this summer has been about the team and it's performance, let's take some time to consider the business side of the Devils for a bit. After all, what goes on in terms of sales and finances will affect what happens on the hockey side of the team.  Plus, I learned a few things and I think it's interesting enough that it's worth sharing after the jump.

Star-divide

First, there are still no single game ticket prices released yet from the New Jersey DevilsTheir website says they won't go on sale until September, which is what they have been doing, though pricing has been released earlier than that.  The Devils are still pushing full season ticket sales, along with increased service for current season ticket holders. I can confirm the latter if only because I, a full season ticket holder, now have a "Fan Experience" team.  I'm not sure what I can ask them beyond what they can do unless I have a problem, and that in of itself is evidence of service. Of course, I'll avoid asking them silly things like trying to get team to play better after a bad game (which are inevitable) or something like that.

Anyway, given that we're in late July and the situation hasn't changed much from, say, May, it's clear that this is an intentional decision. I think I get why the team may be doing this.  It does more than just build up the "base" fans, but it also gives more revenue per person in the long run to the Devils.  Plus, touting an increase of season tickets can have some momentum in marketing this team.   As preseason gets closer and sales peak, the Devils will surely have to release smaller plans like half-season and others, and/or single game pricing.  I'll admit I'm hung up about it since it is a departure of what was done in the past; but again, I think I get the logic behind it.  It sucks if you're looking to plan out a trip for a game in advance, but the sales team is trying a new approach and they feel it's working well enough so far.   We'll see single game pricing when we see it.

Incidentally, I've learned a little more about the supporter's section for the upcoming season.  As mentioned in the comments in the post I did on the seating chart back in May and as highlighted on the team's website as Section 122,  there will be a supporter's section for most of the section itself.  I guess the Devils are taking small steps with the idea of a supporter's section by not using the entire section.  However, they should be still commended that they are actually taking a risk to have such a section; the events with supporters from last season went well enough that the Devils are going further.  As far as I know, no other NHL team has such a section that the team recognizes and supports.  From what I've learned, those looking to purchase seats in that section - again, season tickets for now - have been informed of what to expect from sitting in that section. That's a sensible move by sales since a constant annoyance at other supporters sections in other sports are people in the section who are there just for a cheap seat and not knowing that it comes with a responsibility and/or that other fans around them will be standing and yelling all night long.

Additionally, I understand that the Devils and whoever will lead the group itself will be in communication to make sure both sides are on the same page - which is sensible and important.  While the team's website mentions a big banner on the wall behind them; the team will be giving a special gift for those season ticket holders in the supporter's section.  As I understand it, it's a scarf.  I don't know what it looks like except that it'll be in Devils colors.  But it's a good move by the organization all the same - it's a gift for being part of this continued experiment in fan culture.  Before anyone else complains about not getting a scarf (and I'm sure someone will when this gets officially announced), please be aware that those in the section will be doing more than just watching the game - they'll be expected to stand up and bringing loads of noise.

Come to think of it, the section or the group that will fill it doesn't have a name yet.  While the Devils will provide a banner behind them, it would do well if the group comes up one before the season (or preseason) starts.  I got to think there will be some kind of meeting if only to pass along what it will be.  If you're one of them, think carefully about it as people won't forget it.

While I am not a part of their group, I do sincerely hope the supporter's section is filled and meets expectations in 2011-12 and hopefully it could lead to expansion in further seasons.   I know there are those capable and passionate out there, if only because the first experiments took place during last season of all seasons.

Lastly, here's a quote from the team's season tickets page on the official website as of this writing. The emphasis  here is mine:

More than 1,600 NEW FANS have joined the Devils Army as Season Ticket Holders for the 2011-12 season! With a new head coach, two new enforcers, and a closer connection to the team, fans are jumping on board to be a part of something special!

Well, there's something to be said for trying to hustle, but I have to ask: Will the acquisitions of Eric Boulton and Cam Janssen really get someone to become a season ticket holder? If so, why?  I can totally understand including, say, the re-signing of a certain American who plays left wing before August 3 to try and hawk more season tickets.  It may even be effective; I can see his re-acquisition sweetening the pot enough for people to drop that kind of money. But Boulton and Janssen?  I know some hockey fans like goons enforcers, but is it enough to commit for 41 games?  If it works, OK, but I'm still raising an eyebrow here.

Do you like what the Devils are doing with their ticket sales? What do you expect to come out of the supporter's section? Do you think a scarf is a good idea?  If any of you are season ticket holders like me, do you have an idea what a "Fan Experience" team can do for you?  Please leave your answers and other thoughts about how the Devils are doing on these fronts in the comments. Thanks for reading.

well, when we take a step back and look at the big picture, it is a business. Anything that helps the team sell more tickets, especially the more desirable season ticket packages (for the team’s perspective) is fair play and should be explored. I support what the team is doing… try to sell more tickets. I personally though only go to a few games a year, so what their doing doesn’t really affect me so much.

In doing research for my fan post I put up earlier, I happened to go to a few other teams’ pages, and saw that they are already selling partial season plans and small ticket plans. So the fact that we are still selling season ticket packages I think is a good sign for the financial state of the team.

I have a question, is it hard to get single game tickets in New Jersey? I want to make a trip down to Jersey sometime during the hockey season to see some games. I know if it’s a rival or a Friday/Saturday night game it will be busier but can you still get tickets for those ones like a week or two in advance?

by Keiwi on Jul 22, 2011 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

it's not so difficult

if you happen to buy the single game tickets right after they go on sale, considering you know when you’re going to be coming to NJ. Your completely right though, going to Friday and Saturday night games can be difficult if you don’t buy the tickets right away, and I mean right away. I went to two Friday night division rival games last season and it was difficult to get those tickets in the latter part of the first week they were on sale.
The selection of where you might want to sit may be very restricted if its mid-season already, but usually there are some tickets still available. I don’t mean to advertise it at all, but Ticket Master Ticket Exchange, where season ticket holders can sell tickets that they aren’t going to be using is a great place to get some good seats to busy games in the time frame you mentioned.

It depends on the game sometimes. The ones against rivals are usually sold pretty quickly; other opponents are more amenable for those want to walk up and get something from the box office.

You can definitely order single game seats in advance from the Devils – when they’re available, that is.

You can get em off stub hub pretty easily, and for better prices too.

Well, what they are doing totally worked on me. I had a half season ticket package last year, and ended upping it to a full. I think if they had released the partial plan stuff earlier, I would have just renewed what I had last year.

I like that the are being aggressive about full season packages. According the sales rep that I spoke to, the supporter section is about half of the section (I think it was 122), and it’s just about sold out. I can’t wait to check that out for every game. It was great last year.

I want a scarf

Let me start by saying that I am a new Devils season ticket holder. I was contacted maybe 2 or 3 days after the final Devils game, and after about 2 weeks of phone tag and thinking about the decision, I signed up for 2 tickets in section 124. The price was right, more than anything else. Plus I got a nice gift bag when I signed the paperwork. The sales rep did mention a Devils supports section, but I don’t remember hearing any other details, though the sign sounds familiar. And I think the entire balcony on the end by the Devils bench (and for 2/3 of a game, Brodeur) was turned into season ticket holders.

I almost don’t think we need a “supporters section”. We’re all part of the Devils Army. Let’s just take over the arena.

One other point on the business side. The Devils are a small market team playing in a large market (their base is really northern NJ, maybe a third of the entire TV market, and even then, it may be split 60-40 towards the Rangers). Maybe they’re changing their approach to that end.

In theory, yes. In practice, those in the section are (likely) going to be standing and yelling in support of the team all game long. Most fans won’t do that and I don’t fault them for it, especially since the idea is still relatively new for NJ/the NHL.

Cant Wait

This is my first time being a season ticket holder Im so pumped finally a place where I can scream for my team and not have to worry about parents turning around giving me the eye or just start bitching.. I think we should bring the devils legion back as the name for the group.

If they really want to push season tickets so badly, tell Devils fans that Cangialosi is announcing all the home games from now on. That would work.

All kidding aside, I think the marketing department has struggled for years until recently. I think Will Carafello and the marketing department have shown improved campaigns. They have used social media to their advantage (they’ve doubled their Facebook fans from about 88K last summer to now 192K right now). I know personally that Kovy’s agent Jay Grossman and the Devils’ marketing director Will Carafello have teamed up to run Kovy’s Facebook page and plan to do more campaigns centered around building their fan base and awarding prizes for fans sharing the pages.

Now, I understand where the Devils are coming from, trying to sell season tickets. I understand there has been an increase from ‘09 to ’10 and last year to this year, but for me personally, season tickets is not something I could consider until Parise is signed. I know the odds of him playing with any other team next year are very slim, but I would still not make that investment at this time. The Devils also need to target high school kids. As they have a college night, they should have a high school night to get Jersey kids involved with the Devils at a young age. It’s all about returning customers and building support long-term.

Pure BS

1600 new season ticket holders is a joke. First of all, most of those are in the cheap supporters section. Been a season ticket holder for 7 years & finally got sick of going to an empty arena. People around me did the same.
Tickets are available at a big discount from the team & on stubhub from season ticket holders for almost every game. The seats are too expensive still in the lower corner bowl & lots of empty seats every game except NYR games. Can’t tell you how many games last year the upper corners were totally empty. Just sick of giving the devils my money upfront and after last year didn’t even want to go to half the games. Remember the players weren’t even playing hard in those games. Also think the social media dept is a joke. They only care now because there are so many unsold seats. They like to survey what game years ago you remember, etc. They should be asking about prices, coaching situation, Zach signing, etc.
Oh & the food situation is a joke. Most of the food is disgusting & the only good food is upstairs where half the time is empty? My seats & cupholder were never cleaned for months either even when I complained. Disgusting. Same stupid contests during breaks too.

Sorry to say I’m just buying individual tickets at the right price this year. Had it with the Pru center & Devs organization.

Really, you dont want to go to games because of empty seats, i thought going to hockey games were about watching hockey games, i guess I am wrong. It can be discouraging sometimes when there are some empty seats but its really not as bad as your making it to seem, I’ve seen the stadium pretty well filled at games I’ve been. As for the food yes, dollar hot dog night is awful, i love dollar dogs at the ball park but at the rock, those things taste like horse meat on bagels. I do think the lower bowl seats could be better maintained. It just seems like your argument is all over the place.

That’s not mathematically possible. The supporter’s section maybe holds a few hundred, if that.

im so sorry for your loss

/of your intelligence.

You’re so right, ticket prices should be brought down to 50 cents and food should be free and gourmet. After all, it’s not like they need the money for anything else right? Its not a business or anything…

The game that’s not released yet?

by KovyisLove on Jul 25, 2011 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I am very hopeful on the Supporters’ section and it’ll be interesting to see their progress. I remember there was a Devils fan on this site from Croatia who posted what it was like at a game there and the fans were seemingly loud the whole time. So if this supporter section gives us a bit of a European (or soccer fan) flair, it’s good IMHO.

But looking at the overall PR picture, I think it’s necessary to talk about the loss of the Trenton Devils and Vanderbeek’s quest to own more of “Central” and some parts of South Jersey. This is where a newer fan base could have theoretically come from . . .

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

I'll be in the Supporters Section

First I’ve heard about the scarf. Cool! I’m pretty excited to be jumping around screaming and singing all game. I’ve had a lot of fun sitting near the supporters in past games.

I suppose a website similar to the various Red Bull supporters clubs’ sites is in order. A place to organize a bit and sort out some chants.
