20 Years Ago: St. Louis Signed Brendan Shanahan
This is important because A) Shanahan was a restricted free agent and B) Lou Lamoriello asked and got some defenseman named Scott Stevens as compensation from the Blues. Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy has the history of how it all went down, and I think it's worth your while to read it.

I like the “You’d have a better chance squeezing a glass of Tropicana out of a brick.” part when refering to winning a battle with Lou.
There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

Judge Edward J. Houston is the unsung hero of the Devils organization. (he gave them McKay for Crowder too)
I tend to forget that the Blues got Stevens from Washington with the five first round picks. I also don’t remember Oates as a possibility but then again I was young when this went down.
What a terrible compensation system though. But St. Louis knew the risks and thankfully Stevens got over his disappointment and joined the Devils. But I have never thought ill of Stevens for his initial reaction. Only natural.

I believe it was also Dave Barr (who was considered more of a regular than McKay at the time) McKay was merely the “throw in” who never lived up to his opportunity in Detroit.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
There’s another aspect to this too. Don’t forget the tampering ruling against St. Louis when they tried to get Stevens back.
The Devils got to take one 1st round pick away from the Blues which they did in 2001, although that really didn’t amount to anything. But they were also allowed to swap 1st rounders with St. Louis in a subsequent year, which they did in 2003, switching from 30th to 22nd.
And we all know what Lou subsequently did with pick #22…
I don’t see how you can write such an in-depth piece on the Shanahan/Stevens issue without bringing up the arbitration case Lou Lamorello put together for the Judge. Lou had to create/expand metrics for “goals prevented” to demonstrate how Stevens’ defense could make up for the offense lost when Brendan Shanahan departed. Yet, there was nary a mention of such a significant part of the whole scenario.
Other than that one particular omission, I think it was a very well-written recap by Puck Daddy.
That would have been far too in-depth for the masses at Puck Daddy to comment on, they would have been lost.
I didn’t say Puck Daddy had to give the long-form dissertation on the arbitration case. I simply wish he would have brought it up, explaining even in broad strokes and basic terms what Lou’s argument had been at the time.
Wysh went to the trouble of explaining the rationale behind the package the Blues offered New Jersey as compensation. I would have liked to seen something trying to explain why the Devils targetted Scott Stevens instead of a simple statement that they did.
The lack of any explanation whatsoever minimizes the effort Lou and Co. put in on the arbitration. Considering it was clearly a strong enough case to overcome the Blues’ offer and presentation, there has to have been something there. Even a simple statement such as “Lou Lamorello and the Devils put forth the argument that the goals Scott Stevens would prevent by virtue of his stellar defense would compensate for the reduced offense as a result of the departure of Brendan Shanahan” would satisfy me. Puck Daddy wouldn’t have to pass judgment on whether they agreed with the hypothesis, wouldn’t have to pass judgment on the arbitrator or his decision…. all the statement would do is demonstrate the Devils’ point of view.
