Reports that Colin White and Trent Hunter have been put on Waivers
There have been a lot of reports that Colin White and Trent Hunter have been put on waivers which is a prelude to buying the player out. Only reports right now, but a lot of credible sources are saying it.
UPDATE: I changed the link. Lou has now confirmed that they will be bought out if they clear waivers.
Editor Update: Not that it dissuaded discussion, but welcome to the front page - a post on this will be coming shortly.

So weird. White was VERY serviceable and Hunter was decently cheap 3rd liner. I don’t get this. I would think there is a market for Colin White too…
Wow, Lou wants Shea Weber that bad ?

More for the creative wordplay than the picture (funny though it is).
On a personal note, it just figures you’d post this picture what with me going down the shore this week and all. During Shark Week, no less. Yeah, 30+ years later and I’m still scarred by Jaws.

Current Cap status
so according to cap geek, we now have 13 forwards and 7 Defense (including salvador) and 2 goalies under contract and have about 7.8M in cap space…i think Lou is about to strike with his off season move..
When Lou said "we're not done with trades yet"
makes some sense now.
"It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win"
Let the rampant speculation begin!
Seriously though, does anyone have any ideas as to who Lou might be targeting and/or willing to move to get him?
He’s freed up a not insignificant amount of cap space, suggesting that it won’t just be a depth signing…
I think the target is the Defense, and it may not be a big name, but I see Chris Campoli as a Devil this week. What to do with all the rest of that money, my goodness…
Unless he brings something I’m unaware of (and I admit ignorance about him) I think he’d just add to the logjam on the blue line. If he’s going to add a defenseman, it needs to be worth a White or better.
Very much so. I suppose he might want a veteran D-man, but I’d prefer the Devils save the cap space for the trade deadline.

Id agree with you, and since white only had 1 year left, so im sure lou has been talking to some team, honestly i hope/think it could be Weber. we have plenty of young players to give up to Nashville and maybe that could be why zach agreed only to take 6 mil?

The Devils have the picks now, but they have to forfeit one of their first rounders in the next three years making the probable compensation impossible.
Do we have to forfeit OUR pick or can we forfeit A pick

Maybe Lou knows something
regarding buyouts in the next CBA, as if they would be expunged or something. Over $2M this season, almost $2M next season…
Personally I see a trade. We’d have enough to pay Doughty/Weber the 5+ they’re gonna get. The only thing that would be wanting is Parise’s LTC, but theoretically we could afford it with Salv, Marty, Hedburg, and a couple RFA’s coming off the cap, plus the one mill from the Peters/Pando buyouts. However, I’d be worried about the cap possibly going down or staying the same with the CBA set to expire.
btw
The only thing that would be wanting is Parise’s LTC
maybe there’s a reason why Lou didn’t sign him long term already,
“Kid, let’s avoid arbitration but for the team’s sake, We’re working on a a big trade”
Who knows, I’m just speculating.

look at his playoff stats, the devils can make the playoffs but they cant make good when they get there. white isnt a playoff player
By that logic one can blame any single member of the team one chooses for the team’s playoff failures.
sure there is, white was paid a good amount of money and part of that money was to play good in the playoffs, he didnt do that, therefore why waste money on a guy who has proved he isnt a playoff player, when you could give the spot to someone else, proven or unproven
Everyone on the Devils was paid a good amount of money to play well in the playoffs. You’re singling out White (even though you state you realize you shouldn’t) for his stats (which ones, btw?) and arguing a logic that can be applied equally to pretty much anyone on the team.
So, yes, when things don’t work one should attempt to remedy the situation, but there is no connection with that to your previous statements about White’s performance save that the act of waiving him is making a change. One doesn’t make changes for the sake of making changes and hope it works out… that’s only marginally less stupid than trying to do the same thing the same way when it didn’t work the first three times.
im singling out white because he is the one lou chose to boot. and i dont think subtracting one guy is stupid. when things dont work you try to fix and tweak little things and thats what white is (other than his size of course)
http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8465005&view=stats#&navid=nhl-keymatch
scroll down to playoff stats, 111 playoff games 16 pts
this is an age were you need to be a two way defender or one hell of a hitter
You’re singling out White because you deem him overpaid and underachieving, and astoundingly base this on the fact that he, a defensive defenseman, hasn’t scored a lot of points.
and i dont think subtracting one guy is stupid.
It is if it’s done according to your logic that playoff failure = White’s inability to score.
when things dont work you try to fix and tweak little things and thats what white is (other than his size of course)
You underestimate White’s value. Dig around the site. It’s been covered pretty extensively.

2 nashville players??
if we get weber this year and the pekka next season?
because the devils have a history of being the best defensive team, speaking from a goalie perspective here, Its fun to play on team and 40 shots a game and be a start but lose a lot. but there comes a time where is means a lot more to win and have great stats
Well, if that is what he wants, he should stay put. What do you think Nashville is known for? They certainly do not give up 40 shots a game, and they are in the Playoffs each year.
Ok, giving up 30 shots per game is not 40 certainly, and only 4 more per game. What if Rinne enjoys facing more shots, plays better, keeps him focused during the game?
The Predators certainly won more last season than the Devils
okay yes 40 was a figure of speech, so 4 shots extra times 82 regular season games? thats only a mere 328 shots more a season. im just saying that there is more in it for some of these players than the money. and i wouldnt be surprised if rinne would want to be a devil after marty
We’re already going very far with Weber, but it’s becoming insane with the Pekka talks lmao

@
@yanksdevsjets I don’t think these moves necessarily mean that anything else is coming. Lamoriello has mentioned “budget” repeatedly.
Hmm.
Also this one:
Lamoriello said the decision to buy out both players was budgetary and because of depth of young players on D and at RW.
Once again, conflicting statements from Lou, leaving no one with any idea what’s going to happen next.
I will say, though, that mention of a budget causes me some concern.
i don’t think it’s conflicting. it is odd. colin white should still be decent next year even though he’s reaching that year where big, immobile defenseman like him tend to break down. maybe there’s a deal coming, but i wouldn’t count on it.
hunter buyout was kinda predictable – when lou said ‘i don’t want to get into it’ when TG asked him what hunter brings to the team, that’s a sign.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
He said after the Rolston for Hunter deal that he wasn’t done. Now it seems he’s saying White and Hunter being bought out (and I agree that Hunter’s was expected) was budgetary. That seems contradictory to me… but then, it’s Lou. He’s renowned for such things.
hm? he said he wasn’t done. that didn’t mean he was going to add pieces, haha. that’s you reading into it. he said ‘there are some other things we’d like to do’.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
It was this line that makes me agree with elesias
“In order for us to make any more additions now, we have to make a subtraction.”
This was from a Rich Chere article after Greene re-signed.

Right, and what has he done that contradicts that statement? He’s made subtractions without making any additions – but if he were going to make additions, at that time, there would have to be subtractions.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
Oh, Im not saying he is contradicting himself. Im saying that he is making those subtractions, which leads me to believe he will be making those additions in the near future.
Except he now he seems to be saying that the Rolston, White and Hunter moves were purely budgetary and that the kids will fill the holes.
Argh, trying to figure out what the man means gives me a headache sometimes. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

have we made the connection of the 1-year deal for zach because of “budget” reasons? as in, hopefully it was that and not because either side was hardballing the other?
VERY sad to see Whitey go... :'(
Even though I doubt he would’ve been re-signed, and I’m fine with that, I think he did have a strong year last year. Would rather see him in Albany helping them since Noreau is going to Switzerland and finish his contract there.

I'm not sure
Shea Weber would be nice, but what would Nashville want in return is the big question. Some say Zach Parise, who I love but I do think he would fit well in Nashville. I do think it would have to be Weber and someone else for Parise, maybe Kostitsyn or Bergfors
Shea Weber is just a dream, we’re having fun, just enjoying the summer off-season talks, that’s the point imo.

Colin white was a solid defenseman, but I’m all for the youth movement and there is such a cluster on defense as well. We have the cap space to make a big move and I think we will. Lou always likes to spend to the cap ceiling, and there is not many quality UFAs out there. If we are after weber, it would be today right?

If there’s a complimentary move to be made that requires the additional cap space freed up by these buyouts, I’ll feel better about these moves. Otherwise, I’ll fall back to my default position on buyouts — I hate them, because I hate the dead cap space they create and how that can hinder a team from making other moves.
The dead space for Peters and Pandolfo hurt us a fair amount last year, and not just in the sense of raw cap numbers…. think about the inability of the team to make certain roster moves until players started turning up injured. Are we going to go through the same thing with the dead space from White and Hunter in the near future?
Personally…. if there are no takers, I’d prefer to stick White and/or Hunter at the AHL level and bury their cap hits. I know it’s easy to say when it’s someone else’s money on the line, but I’d just as soon not burden the cap in future years.

No, because the Devils aren’t likely to be a cap team next year or for a while.

The Devils weren’t going to do this. They weren’t going to do it with Hunter because they wanted to save $, and Lou was clearly not going to do it to Colin White, if you read his quotes.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
Gotta agree with you here. If there is no other move to go with this, this doesn’t seem like a good idea. White is a one year contract, and I would like to think that there is some loyalty to a guy who has played his whole life here, even if he has lost a step. He was still useful. Were gonna have over 2.5 million in buyouts next year alone, and some more for a few years after which is not a joke.
All this is what leads me to believe that Lou does have another move planned. I know what the blog is called, but I have doubted him a few times, and Lou has proved me wrong each of those times.
There is no reason he would do that without something else up his sleeve.
by Chris Calabrese on Aug 1, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
If Trent Hunter is not healthy enough to pass a physical, the Devils cannot buy him out. There’s no wiggle room here — League rules prohibit the buyout of injured players. Either the Devils have to accept the trade as-is and wait for Hunter to heal (meaning they wouldn’t be able to buy him out this year), or they’d have to void the entire deal and take back Rolston.
I doubt anyone will be picking up White on waivers when they all know they can sign him as a UFA once the Devils buy him out.
For a team that still needs to get above the cap floor, like the Islanders, it’s certainly possibility. Look what they did with Rolston. Why negotiate another contract (for which While would probably want more than one year on) when you could have him for one year, reaching the floor and giving the defensive prospects they have (like de Hann) another year to develop?
Honest question
why wouldn’t they have just included him in the Rolston trade then?
Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.
Lebda-free since July 3.
Rolston + White for Trent Hunter of all people.
If I’m NHL brass and I see that, I veto it claiming cap circumvention. I’m almost positive they can.
Rolston + White for Trent Hunter
Why would that trade be considered cap circumvention? Sure, it’s a blatant salary dump, but there’s nothing in the rules that says you can’t make a trade where the salaries are so lopsided from one side to the other. If you void that deal, you’re going to have to go back and void a vast number of other trades that were also consumated for the primary purpose of giving one side some cap relief.
It’s the National Basketball Association that has rules regarding salary equity in trades…. and that particular rule (in the NBA) says you cannot take back more than a certain amount of extra salary if you’re making a trade while over the (soft) cap. If there’s a rule like that in the NHL’s CBA, I’d like to see it cited.
According to Capgeek ...
with buyouts on White and Hunter, the Devils have approximately $6.1M of Cap space with a 21-man roster. While that is a lot of room, we also don’t want to be pinned up against the Cap like last season.
From a Devils standpoint, the only way I see Weber coming over (short of trading Parise, that’s just not a possibility for me) is trading Clarkson and one of our ‘on the cusp’ Defensemen (Taormina, Fayne, Urbom). I admit, it doesnt seem to make much sense for Nashville, except that they have two UFA’s next season in Suter and Rinne that will command all kinds of money.
