The Devils and the Lack of Depth at Right Wing

A scenario like this would not be great for the 2011-2012 New Jersey Devils because of their depth, or more accurately their lack of depth at right wing.

If there's one thing that has been concerning me over the last few weeks, it's been the Devils and their Right wings. As of now, the Devils NHL depth chart for the team's right wings should be Zubrus-Palmieri-Clarkson-Zharkov-Janssen- not exactly the best group of right wingers in the league. The Devils lack of depth on the right side isn't just a problem with the big club themselves, but also organizationally as well. Hockeysfuture names only four notable prospects at right wing (3 if you ignore Palmieri), which isn't exactly what you call deep, and most of them are not NHL ready or are in Europe (Jorg). Some of the right wings in the AHL are basically just career AHLers like Stephen Gionta. While the biggest priority over the next season will be re-signing Zach Parise, the right wing problem is just as bad- and it's a problem that might not solve itself for a while.

Star-divide

Short Term Fix: Convert Centers and Left Wingers to the Right Wing

This is probably the best course of action if the Devils suffer a significant injury to a right wing- and will probably happen if it's Dainius Zubrus or Nick Palmieri. David Clarkson can be moved up into the top 6 if that happens, but his weak skating ability will probably mean he'll be a few steps behind some skaters. Converting Mattias Tedenby seems like a logical choice, as he has the skills of a top 6 forward. However, if the Devils are using Tedenby in a sheltered scoring line role (i.e. with Josefson and Clarkson), it's probably better to move Clarkson up as the sheltered scoring line will lose a bit of it's bite. Adam Henrique and Jacob Josefson have both played the on the wing before, but due to the Devils current situation at center it doesn't seem like a likely scenario. Injuries to a bottom 6 right winger are much easier to deal with- if Zharkov goes down they can replace him with Janssen, Gionta or Henrique.

The Draft and the organization

Again, i've also mentioned the team's lack of right wingers earlier when it comes to prospects. The Devils have 8 picks going into next season- all 7 of their picks and the Caps 2nd round pick (Via the Jason Arnott trade), although they may surrender their 1st round pick for the Kovalchuk "penalty" (thanks a lot comissioner jerkface) if they finish high enough in the standings. While the first round pick isn't nearly as important, the Devils do have all their picks after that, and they should focus on drafting right wings, or centers who can be converted to right wingers with their later round picks. Their current crop of right wings should be good enough, but the organizational depth at the position is pretty terrible, especially considering Perkovich is still unsigned per capgeek and Mauro Jorg, who is playing overseas, is not yet signed.Currently the AHL features a bunch of useless AHLers like Gionta, a few prospects like Sislo and Henrique, and veterans like Janssen. It's not great, but the team could use a few more prospects who can play right wing.

Free Agency

This probably won't be discussed as much, because the Devils have more important free agents to worry about, like Zach Parise and the real problems start in 2013, when Clarkson and Zubrus go UFA, with the latter not being retained. I really don't see free agency as a solution to this, as it's a while away, and we'd at least have to judge the team's performance this season rather than jumping to conclusions.

Conclusions

If anything, the depth problems at right wing have more to do with the team's organizational depth at the position rather than their NHL depth. While Janssen does have NHL experience, he's not a very good hockey player. This problem isn't going to be solved now, but it's something the Devils should think about going into the draft next season.

Zharkov hard to predict

If Zharkov can continue to look as good while he plays, but actually get some goals as well, he might be able to crack top two lines at some point. I have to say that on one hand, he has impressed me as I hadn’t expected much from him, but on the other, although he looks like a scorer he doesn’t actually score all that often.

I totally agree with this. He has the speed to keep up with Kovy, Parise, Elias and Zajac. Just needs to show or learn to be better offensively.

You don’t have to be super skilled to be a succussful RW to Parise and Kovalchuk. Just look at Langenbrunner and Palmieri.

I disagree with what you say about Palmieri. I think he has alot of potential. He’s big and has a good shot. At first when he was called up, his skating needed some work, but as the season progressed his skating improved vastly. He even said himself that he needs to work on that part of his game so I’m sure that is something he is working on as we speak. I saw alot of games this year on Center ice so alot of games were from the other teams commentators and he always seemed to get alot of praise.

Cory Stillman would be a good fit for a season. I know he shoots left but he plays both sides. I know he has injury problems but who knows he might have a good year. That’s if he isn’t signed yet. I haven’t been keeping track that closely.

This pretty well sums up the situation at right wing. I think the best options are through a trade or free agency. Most teams have a weakness at one position or the other and this looks to be the Devils weak spot.

Haven’t you heard? We have the 3rd best right wing in the game!

(yes, I am being sarcastic).

So this is what it's like to be an Islanders fan...

After reading it, I felt he was being sarcastic when he put Jagr at #25.

This is balanced out by the fact that the Devils have the strongest left wing in the game. And Tedenby played right wing for most of last year, so I don’t see it as an issue, yet.

I’d really like to trade for Ales Hemsky, though.

What would that take, Tedenby + Urbom + Clarkson + 2nd?

by dkball7 on Aug 13, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

way less than that.

I agree it would be less than that, but Edmonton’s asking price won’t be too small, they would have traded him away already if it was.

and the Fact that Elias should really be on RW

by NJDOhio on Aug 13, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

ok I’ve gotta ask, how did you come to that conclusion. He’s a left wing who doubles at center… how do you put him on the right wing

by devilstuckinkansas on Aug 14, 2011 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Not so sure I agree

that they aren’t deep at RW.

Specially considering Elias should be playing RW.

Example:
Parise – Zajac – Palmieri
Kovy – Josefson – Elias
Tedenby – Zubrus – Clarkson

This above would not surprise me.

by NJDOhio on Aug 13, 2011 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

Patrick Elias has played left wing or center his entire career. There’s no reason he “should be playing RW”. Sure, he’s talented and may even be able to make the adjustment…. but it could also turn into a catastrophe a la “Kovalchuk on RW” that MacLean tried last season.

Looking at your lines above, Zubrus is a better candidate to play right wing, and has done so frequently enough that it isn’t pushing a square peg into a round hole. If Elias is not going to play center as he has done much of the last two years, he should be back on his natural left wing.

Playing multiple players out of position when it isn’t at all necessary is a pretty good foundation on which to build another lost season.

by acasser on Aug 13, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Could have sworn he was a RW. But yeah after doing some looking. Your right. He is a Left wing. So yeah probably scratch that.

But on the other hand. It is really Elias call. It’s not as much a stretch for him to play RW because he has been playing Center. Plus I know I’ve seen him out on the right side many times. Although probably on the powerplay and other special situations. I don’t think its that far fetched.

Kovalchuk is a bad example because he has probably played wing 95% of his career. Puts up awesome numbers shooting right on the left side. If he says he is uncomfortable on the right side I think you put him where he is comfortable.

I’ve played Hockey. So I can understand someone having a preference. For all we know Elias is perfectly comfortable on any side. To say someone is a natural LW or RW is really the players preference. It is harder to stick someone at Center.

by NJDOhio on Aug 13, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Either way. Personally we are weaker at Center. We have plenty of “wingers”

by NJDOhio on Aug 13, 2011 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we should go out and sign Trent Hun…… never mind.

r wingers

I’m not as worried about our right wingers/Offense here. I think it will work it’s self out just fine. Also it is not as easy to convert players around, maybe some easier then others?? I have a feeling our offense will be exciting!! ; )))))>

I’m more worried about how even & solid our defense is going play??

Commissioner Jerkface

Can Lou give up the 1st round pick and then just spite Buttman by doing a trade that involves someone else’s first-rounder?

by MyDogsNameIsKovy on Aug 14, 2011 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

He could, but doing so for spite and not for smart business reasons would be, well, not smart. If he could do both… more power to him.

by elesias on Aug 15, 2011 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Kevin, this is a good issue to bring up; it’s a dearth in the system and it’s something the team needs to look ahead to address. I feel that drafting RWs would clearly help, but I also feel that could be accomplished through just drafting forwards as well. Plenty of drafted centers end up being wings later on for one reason or another (e.g. Parise). The game’s tactics have shifted to a point where wings aren’t just going up and down their side of the ice; they need to be dynamic enough to shift where nececessary be it in a cycle or backchecking or whatever. Of course, it would help if a few of them are right-handed shots.

As for the short term, I don’t think it’s necessarily a problem provided injuries don’t strike more than one of them down. But that’s a concern for any position for many teams.
