No Vacancy - The New Jersey Devils 50ish Man Roster
It's mid-August and the New Jersey Devils player contract roster has peaked. Actually, it's over. With a couple of signings in the past week, it doesn't seam like the Devils will be signing anyone else for the rest of the off-season, baring any unforeseen transaction. The last time ILWT discussed this, the Devils situation was nearing the limits, with the roster size and the cap ceiling.
In that span up until now, the Devils managed to trade away Brian Rolston and his $5+ million cap hit for one more season; sign Zach Parise for just one year, though with the intent to sign a long-term deal; buyout newly acquired Trent Hunter and long time Devils defenseman Colin White. This create enough space to finish the month up with signing goalie Maxime Clermont and defensman Peter Harrold.
Now, there is no salary cap problem, which is nice. The Devils do have some sort of budget as well, which isn't the greatest of things (unless it's to save for free agents next off-season?). The Devils are full roster-wise, which is what this post will be concentrating on. This is a breakdown of the Devils reserve list. Continue after the jump.
The Devils have 49 players signed to contracts, plus two more players that count against the list for a total of 51. The limit is 50, though there is one way the Devils can stay at 51 and not be violating the CBA. Here is Capgeek's page of the reserve list for the Devils. They have 48 listed, but Nathan Perkovich has apparently re-signed with the organization first reported in mid-July. The two players who are not signed and will be on other teams (not in the NHL) come this season are Alexander Vasyunov and Maxim Noreau, whom were given qualifying offers, but opted to play in Russia and Europe respectively. If Adam Larsson plays less than 10 games in the NHL this season, his contract slides and he won't count towards the reserve list, putting the Devils at 50.
The Devils NHL roster seems to be finished. There's a lot of players fighting for the bottom 6 forward spots and filling out the 6th and 7th defensive spots of New Jersey's roster. There are just enough forwards for Albany's line-up with ample amount of defensemen.
The New Jersey Devils Potential 23-Man Line-up
| LW | C | RW |
| Kovalchuk | Zajac | Palmieri |
| Parise | Elias | Zubrus |
| Tedenby | Josefson | Clarkson |
| Boulton | Steckel | Janssen |
| Zharkov | Pelley | |
| D | D | |
| Tallinder | Greene | |
| Volchenkov | Salvador | |
| Larsson | Fayne | |
| Fraser | ||
| G | ||
| Brodeur | ||
| Hedberg |
There are tons of options for the line-up, this is just my guess. It all depends on training camp and preseason games, then head coach Peter DeBoer and Lou Lamoriello will sit down and shape the roster accordingly ready for October 8th. I think this roster is a likely scenario based on the second half of last season, certain contract implications, and potential.
As I said before, if Larsson doesn't play 10 or more games in the NHL, he will not count towards the 50-man reserve list. I don't think a business decision for such a high draft pick with such potential should trump an on-ice decision. If Larsson has a great camp and has shown to be one of the 7 best defenders the Devils have, he should play in New Jersey. Even if injuries happen, Larsson would be a top option for a replacement (if it's for more than 10 games). Since Lou had the chance the let Jacob Josefson's contract slide last season after he came back from wrist surgery, he lets his players play where he and the coaches see fit, no matter what business implications are created for the future.
I like the versatility in this line-up. There are three capable lines of scoring, with the 4th line being anywhere between a goon line or a defensive line. The defense has a solid mix of shut down guys, puck movers, and youth potential.
The Albany Devils Potenial Roster and the Rest
| LW | C | RW |
| Mike Hoeffel | Adam Henrique | Mike Sislo |
| J.S. Berube | Tim Sestito | Stephan Gionta |
| Kory Nagy | Steven Zalewski | Nathan Perkovich |
| Chad Wiseman | Brad Mills | |
| Stephan Veilleux | Matt Anderson |
This isn't my Albany line-up guess. The players are ranked in order of their NHL contract amount. There's enough players to get a roster and have one scratch per game. Injuries happen, people get banged up and miss a game here and there. The organization needs a couple more forwards (which they probably will do, they just won't have an NHL contract thus not count against the reserve list).
If you read Kevin's post from yesterday, then you are aware of the shortage of right wingers in the system. With prospects like Josefson and Henrique getting their first taste of the pros (non-European pros) last season, it seems the depth at center at both levels isn't a problem as it once was a couple years back. There is a hefty amount of veteran presence as well (6 of these forwards are 26 and older). I don't think any of these players have a real good chance of cracking the NHL roster, baring a horrible camp from someone like Zharkov or Pelley (or even Palmieri), or a couple major injuries (To every deity - Please No).
| D | D |
| Brandon Burlon | Joe Sova |
| Eric Gelinas | Peter Harrold |
| Alex Urbom | Matt Taormina |
| Dan Kelly | Harry Young |
| Matt Corrente | Jay Leach |
The Devils have enough defenders for three teams...too bad they only have two. The players are listed just like the forwards (left column then right column).
Burlon, Gelinas, and Sova will be playing in the pros for the first time, so expect them in Albany. Urbom, Corrente, Taromina, and even vet Jay Leach have the ability to crack the NHL line-up (watch out Fayne, Fraser, and Larsson). Everyone else is pretty much brick faced in in Albany. If the Devils were to be active anytime for the rest of the off-season, I would expect a transaction from this group. Trading a solid defensive prospect (Corrente, Young, Sova) for a right winger (even a young AHLer) would be ideal.
| G |
| Keith Kinkaid |
| Maxime Clermont |
| Jeff Frazee |
As for the goalies, more youth was the answer this off-season. MIke McKenna is gone, Jeff Frazee was given two more years to prove himself worthy. The Devils signed Kincaid, a Union College sophomore who was un-drafted, to an ELC. Look to see him in Albany. The recent news was Clermont, who was signed to an ELC. He can play in both the minors and the AHL this season and can be called and recalled when needed. With Hedberg and Brodeur at the top 2 spots, I don't see these three players cracking the line-up in New Jersey.
So the Devils are at 49 signed players - 5 goalies, 17 defenders, and 27 forwards. Two more players count against the 50-man reserve list becuase they were given qualifying offers. New Jersey's line-up is full and Albany's may still need to tweaked a bit (possibly by players with just an AHL contract) to have enough depth. In the minors, teams can also only play so many "veteran" players, and the organization will have to work that out too.
Does Lou and Co. have anymore moves? Will we see a trade in the future, saying goodbye to one of out many defensemen? Discuss the organizational roster, your likes, dislikes, what you want done to finish the off-season. Thanks for reading.

Vasyunov and Noreau do not count against the 50-man reserve list as they do not have signed contracts. However they do count against the 90-man reserve list which includes unsigned players for whom the team retains their rights. A qualifying offer is not a signed contract, besides which the qualifying offers for Vasyunov and Noreau expired on July 15th, which means that those players are not entitled to a 10% automatic increase.
I think that you’re right, but I’m not entirely sure? I’m going through the CBA and you’re definitely right about the 90-man limit. However, the Devils did retain their rights to Vasyunov and Noreau since they were tendered qualifying offers. So, no, NJ didn’t sign them, but should either want to play in the NHL in the near future, they’ll have to go through NJ regardless of whether the qualifying offer expires. They’re not UFAs until next summer when the term is up. But I could be dead wrong in how I’m reading the CBA.

they don’t count against the 50 man limit. 100% sure of this, or else alex korolyuk would count against the 50 man limit.

Question for Tom:
Were Dan Kelly and Harry Young that bad last year that the Devils felt they needed to sign Harrold. Looking at the roster in depth makes this look like an even worse move. I don’t even have him in the top 5 of the AHL players.
There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

you’re nuts. harrold’s last season in the AHL, he was a point a game player.
larsson won’t count against the 50 man limit if he plays in the AHL. the devils have at least one spot on the reserve list.

Young Defensemen in Albany
Dan Kelly and Harry Young are both young players. And, with so many young d-men in Albany, including some players playing their first year of professional hockey, it is a good idea to have a couple of experienced players for them to learn from. I believe that is the role Jay Leach and Peter Harrold play here.

I have been out of touch recently but Harrold is a replacement for what the team thought they were going to get from Noreau. I would imagine that Harrold also counts as a ‘vet’ from the AHL perspective (remember you can only actively dress 4-5 vets per game)
Kelly looked OK last year. Be interesting to see his role this year with all the new blood in the mix. He wasn’t bad though. To have a plus rating on that Albany team last year was quite the feat.
Young is slow, but he is smart and he brings pugilistic skills to the team which they will desperately need since they lost PL3 and other ‘enforcers’. Unfortunately the enforcer is necessary at the AHL level. I think the Flyers affiliate dresses like 13 goons that have the NHL career potential of Trevor Gillies.

Training Camp & Pre-Season Games
It is going to be a very interesting upcoming training camp and pre-season. First to all, the Devils have a new head coach in Peter DeBoer. It will be very interesting to see how well DeBoer and the players mesh together. I am sure we are all curious to see how DeBoer wants the Devils to play and what line combinations he puts on the ice.
By buying out the contracts of Rolston and White, the Devils have created opportunities for a number of young players. The Devils already have a number of talented young players on their NHL roster in Palmieri, Zharkov, Tedenby, Josefson, and Corrente.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the upcoming training camp and pre-season games will be witnessing which young players make the NHL roster by the time the regular season opens. I can’t wait to see what players like Larsson and Henrique can do, or if Urbom is ready to join the NHL roster. Also, I am looking forward to seeing other young players make their case to be a future NHL player; young players like Burlon, Gelinas, Sova, Hoeffel, Sislo, Frazee, Kincaid, and Clermont.
A couple of more notes. With Clarkson able and willing to drop his gloves, I rather not see both Boulton and Janssen on the opening day roster. I rather see a player that can actually play; kill penalties, score a few goals, etc., make the NHL roster.
One last item. If Larsson, Zharkov, Urbom, and/or Henrique, make the NHL roster by opening night, I hope it is not as a reserve player. These young players need to play on a regular basis, in the NHL or in the AHL, to continue developing their games. Can’t wait for September 13th, when the Devils open their training camp.
Drop the puck, I am psyched for training camp
It’s going to be very interesting in Newark this September with numerous players battling for the open spots.

“Reserve List” means the list of all Players to whom a Club has rights
including all Unsigned Draft Choices, all Players signed to an SPC (whether or not8
currently playing in the NHL), and all Players who have signed an SPC but who have
subsequently been returned to Juniors. A Club may have on its Reserve List, at any one
time, not more than 90 Players, which shall include the following:
(a) Not more than 50 Players signed to an SPC and not less than 24 Players and 3 goalkeepers under an SPC. Age 18 and age 19 Players who were returned to Juniors, and who have not played 11 NHL Games in one season, shall be exempt from inclusion in the 50 Player limit. Any Club violating this provision shall be liable to loss of draft choices as
determined by the Commissioner.
(b) Unsigned Draft Choices.
I read that as only players actually signed to an SPC count against the 50-player limit, RFAs count against the 90-player limit. Also again, even if QO’s were still in effect, those are not signed contracts.
This also means that Larsson counts against the 50 Player limit.
If he doesn’t crack the NHL lineup, he’ll be in Albany, not the Juniors.
Time for a trade or two
to exploit our obvious strength on Defense throughout the organization. Would love to see a pair of NHL prospect Defensemen be moved for an NHL Top 6 RW.
careful what you wish for
Each year we look to the new season with optimism and this year is no exception. So much talent, so little time. Its great that we have so many defensemen to choose from this season, and perhaps some are quite marketable trade wise in a quest to build up the right wing position. Here’s my point; don’t trade Joe Sova.
Out of the University of Alaska (Fairbanks) Sova played eleven games for the Albany Devils, at the very tail end of last season, at about the time the season was essentially lost. I saw him in what I believe was his first pro game. Sova did not get a tremendous amount of ice time yet made an immediate positive impression. Sova seemed to be running in a different gear, faster than his peers; thinking, passing, shooting. In eleven games he racked up one goal and three assists. Not bad for someone just coming into the system. At 6’3" he is a defensive presence. I will go out on a limb and predict that he will be further up the depth chart than Urbom mid way through this season in terms of call up potential. Then again, I thought McKenna had potential too.
He’s got a rocket of a shot for sure, but from the games I saw he has a lot of stuff defensively to work on. He let too many forwards get behind him during play and was a liability defensively.
No way he is higher than Urby on the organizational depth chart right now.
