Gulitti- Travis Zajac undergoes surgery, expected to miss 3 months
Tom Gulitti tweets that Travis Zajac will undergo surgery on his left achillies tendon. Zajac is expected to miss 8-10 weeks, meaning he will miss training camp and the start of the season, barring he is able to recover ahead of schedule.
Update- via TG, Lou Lamoriello says that Zajac will be out for 3 months starting from today- meaning he will be out until November.

Awww....sad....
I fanshotted that. :( This could possibly make opening nights line up interesting. Hopefully everthing goes perfectly and he is back by then though.
He got the injury during training, just unlucky. Our center depth is Elias Josefson- Pelley? I don’t want Pelley to be our 3rd line center.
As much as I dont want Pelley at third line, I think we can hold for the week or two that Zajac is out. I dont see the point in signing someone. I mean Henrique could come play center even.

I’d rather put Zubrus as 3rd line center for a bit. Kovy with Josefson and Parise with Elias. RW’s are thin as posted before with Zubrus switching though. Meh, it’s a mess.
Yeah that does make more sense. I forgot about Zubrus. This will be interesting, but hopefully everything will go better than planned and he will be back for opening night.

P.S. I think this will make Josefson and Elias centeriing the first two first lines (I say “first two” because I define our first two lines as 1a and 1b. In fact, a good number of the teams have that arrangement). That’s what I think it will be, but in a perfect world I would rather have Zubrus to centering the non-Parise line. As I’ve expressed previously, I really don’t like and have never liked Elias playing at center because his faceoff percentage is absolutely horrible (169th in the league last year, and he doesn’t score as much as he should with his skill because he scores more playing left wing instead of center. According to NHL.com, he was 218th in the league in percentage at a shockingly awful 45.0%. Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to compare his percentage to guys who took a very little number of faceoffs and just happened to get lucky by winning a significant chunk of the few they got to take, so I quickly tallied up all the players who took 35 faceoffs or less (approximately 70), and I deducted them from his rank, so he really had about the 198th best percentage in the league. But heck, both 268th and 198th both sound so awful that I don’t think one is more impressive than the other. 45.0%….

I really dislike Steckel & that hit on Sid C. is haunting him!! We don’t need that……

Steckel’s useful. Kills penalties and is actually a good 4th liner. Clarkson on the other hand…

How much you wanna bet there’s been a phonecall to Madden?
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? - Il Duce
Eh, it wasn’t that much of a shot. And to be honest, he won a cup after the lockout (not that he had a whole lot to do with that), so he wasn’t completely out of line to make the comments he did.
I’m not saying he’s needed, wanted, or the best solution to the problem. But in case you haven’t noticed, there’s a bit of a tendency in Newark for bringing back players they know in this sort of situation. The Devs know what they’ll get with Madden, and for $1M to fill in for a year, it wouldn’t be that bad.
I’d much prefer Henrique be given the chance to succeed, but there’s always the possibility that he isn’t ready or able to hack 3rd line center duties. Then again, he might bust things open and let Zubs go back to wing. Who knows.
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? - Il Duce
There’s no need to call Madden or Drury or any other UFA center, unless we’re being lied to and Zajac is going to miss the entire season. For a “short term” injury like this (and the prognosis being three months, I use “short term” very liberally), you plug the gap from within instead of taking on a player you might not have a spot for a few months from now. David Steckel and Rod Pelley can adequately hold down the #3 and #4 center positions if needbe, or Adam Henrique can be given a little run as the third-line center if he demonstrates he can handle that job.
Besides which, aren’t the Devils at the 50-player maximum? If that’s the case, they CAN’T sign a free agent without first expunging a player from the organization…. and at this date that means a trade.
the devils are not at the 50 player maximum. i’m tired of hearing this.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
Seems a trade was coming anyway
with all of the Defensive depth we have in exchange for a Top 6 forward. Hopefully its an RW and allows Zubrus to skate in the middle.
i hope a trade for a D-man
Really? I do not think our D has depth? Yeah Zubie will do but, I don’t think he is all that great with face off draws? Maybe he is?
We need to pick up another D man & I know there is not a lot to choose from out there but somewhere down the line we gotta make a trade. I want Salvador back but who knows how long he can last. I want Madden back! Does anyone think Lou will bring him back cheap where he from where he started!! WE NEED SOME CUP GUYS BACK!
No need to live in the past in regards to bringing “Cup Guys back.” I suppose I should have clarified that we have Organizational Defensive Depth, but we do have plenty.
Madden is at this point, worthless.
Zubie will do but, I don’t think he is all that great with face off draws? Maybe he is?
He is. Exclude Palmieri, who only took 2 draws. Only Steckel had a better faceoff winning percentage on the team than Zubrus.
Go Devils
Go Jets
Need to lose weight?
Lamoriello said he has no plans to sign another center now to replace Zajac or bring one in for training camp as a tryout.
"That’s why you have depth," he said. "It will give somebody else an opportunity to come forward and see what they can do."
Three months seems wishful thinking to me. I hate to say it, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes much longer than that.
i know maddog is old now but, remember how kick…. he was in ’03. that huge cut on his cheek bone. what a warrior!!! those short handed goals etc
i’m pissed!! this ruined my day that we are gonna be loosing him for almost 2 months!
Quickly because I've been sick
1. It’s not a good thing if the first silver lining to think of from this is that Zajac didn’t try playing with the injury.
2. I don’t think this benefits Henrique as it does Palmieri. The Devils could (and probably should) move Zubrus to center in camp. That opens up a RW spot and may guarantee a top-6 spot for Palmieri. The Devils really don’t need to sign a center; and the current FA market is scraps at this point anyway. I’d rather thin out an already weak RW position to salvage center at this point.
3. That all said, Josefson better be ready to grow up fast, he may have to depending how camp goes. I’d like him to get soft minutes as he’s still quite young and developing, but if he’s forced to move up in role, then I sincerely hope he’s ready for the shift in responsibilities and expectations.
4. At most, this affects one and half, maybe two, months of the season and it’s only one player. Zajac is important to the team, but it shouldn’t mean we’ll see a repeat of last season’s first half either. Hopefully, the Devils can maintain without him and so when he does come back, the team’s not in a deep hole in the standings.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The New Jersey Devils SBN Blog
It might affect more than two months. Gulitti didn’t specify the depth of the injury or the type of surgery he had, but this isn’t the sort of injury one typically just bounces back from. Granted, we’re all aware of Zajac’s toughness, and being younger certainly doesn’t hurt in the recovery process, but in the end even if the surgery is a 100% success and there are zero setbacks in the recovery, he’s still got to play catch up to get to mid-season form since he’ll have just spent months atrophying.
Sure he did. Simple torn achillies. Not a rupture. Easy fix. Just time to heal.
"He’ll be in a cast for a week and then he’ll be in a walking boot right after that," Lamoriello said. "Then, it’s the healing process, which takes around three months."
I’ve been all for Palms playing with Kovy, and I think DeBoer would have been silly to break them up in any case, since they seemed to have some pretty strong chemistry last season.
The only thing I’m worried about is that there is no team quota or limit for injuries. Just becasue we lose Trav before the season doesn’t mean we are immune to injuries until he gets back. Another injury at C or RW when already counting on JJ to pick it up bigtime, Henrique to step into 3C duties, and so on. The alternatives of Corrente playing forward, binging Sestito back up to play, or counting on Pelley for extended periods of time scare the hell out of me.
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? - Il Duce
From everything I’ve read, a rupture is the proper name of the injury (Achilles Tendon Rupture, or ATR), which describes either a partial tear or a full tear. The breadth of the injury is not stated (though I assume it was a partial tear), nor which of the available options for surgery they opted for… all of which can affect the recovery process and the potential complications therein.
Regardless, the “healing process” is probably going to be an aggressive, escalating treatment designed to get him back into shape as quickly as possible to avoid muscle atrophy, but it in no way guarantees that he’ll be good to go in three months.
It’s a big opportunity for both Palmieri (to play in a top-6 role) and Henrique (to play on the third line). My guess is Zubrus shifts to the middle between Henrique and Clarkson, but we’ll have to see how things shake out in camp.
All this highlights our lack of depth at center though. Both Elias and Zubrus should be wingers, and they’re being forced to play out of position. The RWers lack in star quality, but in some sense they’re interchangeable without too much of a difference.
Why should Elias be a winger? He’s been great at center. He’s a distributor of the puck. He’s now okay at faceoffs. He’s a great defensive player.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
Just because his natural position is a winger I suppose. Having a center who is responsible defensively frees Elias to be better offensively. Kinda like 08-09 with Zubrus and Patty putting up 78 points in 77 games.
Parise’s natural position was center. We moved him to wing. Would you like to put him back? I think not.

"I was in the moment, and the moment said smack you." - Bruce Willis
This means nothing to me, Parise didn’t play center at the NHL at all, or at least for very long. Elias played his whole career on wing beside one season and different stints randomly. Parise could probably still play center just not be as dynamic offensively.
elias was a center in the minor leagues. he can clearly play the position very well. what would compel you to move him back to wing? this thinking has bit the devils enough when sutter foolishly moved him back – elias is a center, and a damn good one.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
What? Elias again put up 78 points in 77 games at LW with Zubrus and Gionta. Calling that a foolish decision is funny.
He didn’t open the season with Zubrus. Sutter was using Rolston as a center. Then Rolston got hurt and they moved Zubrus to center. Rolston was buried as a result.
It worked out kinda well, but the team signed Rolston to play LW, and he was never used there by Sutter.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
I completely agree KovyisLove. I don’t think playing center in minors is relevant once the player also has played over a full decade straight in the NHL at LW. The only thing it shows is that he had the ability to play center in minors, with not only weaker competition but weaker play on his part, since he continued improved at a ridiculous clip over his first four seasons.
Moreover, the stats bear out the theory that Elias is better when playing center. According to NHL.com statistics, he was 198th in the league in faceoff percentage (deducting all those on the list before him who took 35 or less faceoffs, which was approximately 70). Worse, his producation numbers are often less at center than his numbers playing left wing.
And Parise playing center in minors means nothing. That analogy above makes no sense to me. The better q

The question should actually be: "would you try moving Parise to center at this point in his career? After playing his whole NHL career on LW and succeeding on a level that is so high it may go unmatched, screwing with the formula for that success would be a pretty poor decision, especially in a season where he is returning from injury.
by Dr. Witticism on Aug 19, 2011 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions
faceoff percentage doesn’t mean very much, and elias is now passable at that. he’s awesome at everything else.
elias’s production numbers at center can’t be compared to his production at left wing, because he wasn’t put at center until 2007-08.
little known fact: what forward had the lowest shots per game against in the league? that’d be patrik elias. oh and he did it facing difficult competition. guess that whole faceoff thing isn’t that important after all.

Travis Zajac’s Ironman streak is now over with 401 consecutive games… I can’t enjoy anything good from this. Henrique is nowhere near Zajac, the Devils will miss him, that’s not a good news, sorry.

I feel really bad for Tedenby...
The following hypotheticals and thoughts assume that Henruiqe plays as the third line center (or better, if he somehow just comes rolling out and destroys everyone….unlikely), because I think that is the most likely outcome.
Anyway, I’m so high on Tedenby, and now this. Now that Zajac is gone, Josefson will likely end up on 1a or b, and that means that Tedenby might end up with a poor and/or poorly matched (to his abilities and strengths) line. This would be an absolute shame, as he is seriously poised to have a huge year with the right mates. Unless he tries playing RW, Palmieri tries LW, and they switch lines so Tedenby is on 1a or 1b and Palmieri is on the 3rd line.
The other possibility is having Zharkov try right wing on a 3rd line with Tedenby. I think it should be tried to see if Zharkov’s speed and style is more valuable with Tedenby than Clarkson’s game is. And who knows, maybe Zharkov will start scoring with someone like Tedenby, confirming that there really is some sort of offensive potential in him, despite what his stats may say.
This means a possible promotion for Tedenby. It’s not a setback for him.
http://drivingplay.blogspot.com - the blog with three first lines
Promotion to which line? Just curious.

I really, really, realllllly hope Tedenby turns into the next Martin St.Louis, Small but shifty fast and a high energy scoring machine.
But I’m still waiting to see something good other then some clever dekes. I’m just not that high on him yet.
I only started liking him as the season went on and he improved so much. Before that, I thought he maybe had 20-goal-scorer potential at best because if the serious improvement didn’t happen and he stayed at that lower level, he would never be much of a force on the ice.
I think he has the offensive potential to be a St. Louis lite (let’s not pin our hopes to high!), but he would have to become not only one of the best offensive forwards in the league, but one of the best defensive forwards as well.

This is really scary news. DeBoer sure isn’t getting handed an easy assignment because now he has lost the team’s top center, forcing him to completely redo the lines before he’s even coached a single game. Who will be the 4 centers now? Elias, Josefson, Steckel, Henrique?
Hold on everone! Lets not get too frantic here. He’s probably only out for the first month and a half of the season. The biggest problem that I can see is that Zajac is going to miss training camp and the proper conditioning that players need to start the season, so he’s going to be playing catch up in that reguard. That probably means Elias will center one of the top lines and J.J. will get a shot at the other top line, Zubrus can play third line and Steckel at fourth line. They can also experiment a bit with Henrique at third line center switching off with Zubrus if Henrique is have trouble adjusting. Another guy that could play a factor in this is Brad mills. They could try to put Steckel on the third line and play Mills on fourth line center. The lines could go something like this:
Parise Elias Palmieri
Kovalchuck Josefson Clarkson
Tedenby Henrique Zubrus
Pelley Steckel Zharkov
Or this
Parise Elias Palmieri
Kovalchuck Josefson Zubrus
Tedenby Steckel Henrique
Pelley Mills Zharkov
Just a couple of options that they could go with.
You don’t even have Clarkson in your second lineup, but yet you have Brad Mills…
by undersuspicion426 on Aug 19, 2011 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Pelley could get some time on the team again because of this though. I also think that this will give Tedenby a second line spot if Zubrus gets moved over to center. I still think Tedenby should be moved to right wing at least for a short time. Left Wings dont get a lot of playing time with the Devils because of Kovy/Parise and I think that Teddy needs some playing time to develop into the scorer I think he can be.
