Niedermayer’s jersey being retired isn’t confirmed yet, is it? I thought it was still up in the air at this point.
TG just confirmed with Lou that this will be happening this year. I’m very happy that they’re doing this.
Two things.
The link is wrong for the black ice jersey (it points to the Ryder Stanley Cup incident).
Also, something that was posted recently that I think is interesting.
Salvador very confident about his return to the lineup: Fire and Ice

Regarding the Salvador article, that’s very good news. I would like to see the pairings play out something like (in no particular order)
Volchenkov-Larsson
Salvador-Greene
Tallinder-Fayne
Fraser
If it is decided that Larsson isn’t ready, you could slot Taormina or Corrente somewhere in there. They have a lot of options at defense, but I think having Salvador healthy puts them in a very good position.
There will be a lot of competition for those last two spots. I think Fraser is pretty much a lock for the seventh defensemen role (since he’s on a one way contract). The spots I have Fayne and Larsson in are up for grabs (with Taormina and Corrente fighting for those spots also). Competition is always good!
Thanks for letting me know about the black ice link, it is fixed. and i’ll put the salvador article in tomorrows post!
I agree. Greene struggled last season w/o Salvador because he had all sorts of defensive partners before ending up w/ Salmela, who was turrible. Salvador should at least add least provide Greene with a good defensive partner

I’m pretty sure just because someone is on a one way contract, DOES NOT mean they have to be in the NHL, and if they were sent down to the minors, they go on waivers.
I don’t think it works like NHL 11.

I totally understand that. The reason I say that he’s pretty much a lock for the 7th D role is because I doubt the Devils will want to pay someone an NHL salary in the AHL when they don’t have to.
Also, I don’t see them putting Fayne, Corrente, Tao, or Larsson as a 7th D-man (who will likely see VERY limited playing time). I can see them doing this Fraser, however.
I got you now. Sorry for misunderstanding.
Fraser would be a OK as seventh d-man, although I hope he plays as limited games as possible.
Too raw defensively, I think.

I’m of the opinion that the Devils should simply play their best six defensemen every night. If Larsson doesn’t prove to be as developed and effective as Taormina or Corrente, then he should play in the AHL. I don’t think that will be the case, but I don’t really have much of anything to back that up. I hope Lou and DeBoer make the right call.
I don’t really see any real benefit in playing him in Sweden. He should be AHL ready at the very least, and a year in the AHL won’t burn a year on his ELC.
I’m on the fence about the Black Ice jerseys, It looks cool for the devils because the black makes sense. On the other hand its gimmicky and somewhat expensive.

You don’t have to buy one. I think it’s a cool concept and kudos to Reebok. Some look better than others.
You don’t have to buy one.
Never said I was being forced to buy one. I was just saying how I was debating on buying one.

It seems like NHL.com has already done away with the Black Ice jerseys.

Just out of curiosity, why are they planning on retiring Nieds’ number on Dec 16th against the Stars, when 2 months later the Devils play Anaheim in Jersey? Seems it would be a bit more fitting than a random Dallas game.
Oh and also, someone tell Bettman that no one is actually buying these monstrosities Reebok keeps putting out. Although they’re not quite as bad as those epic fail champagne women’s jerseys from 2ish years ago – Look those up for a laugh if you don’t recall them.

On Dec 16th...
I think I managed to mine enough data and presented the case for why here
Basically, if you look at the primary reason he left NJ in free agency, to play with his brother, you would have to assume he’d like to have Rob at a retirement ceremony. Rob signed with Hockey Club Lugano, and is playing in the Swede National League A. Rob has games in Sweden on the 17th and 18th of February, making the Anaheim game impossible for him to attend if without leaving the club for which he currently plays. However, they have a scheduled break from 11 December to 19 December, providing a nice window of opportunity for Rob to come back to the US and see his brother have his # retired with plenty of travel and/or rest time on either side of the 16th. And if you’re the Devils planning the retirement of one of the greatest defensemen to ever play for you, a simple request that your brother be able to attend the ceremony is really the least you can do. And it just so happens that you have a friday night home game to accomidate his availability…it’s pretty much a lock.
