Steve Cangialosi to Replace Doc Emrick as Devils Play-By-Play Caller

Back in mid-July, legendary broadcaster and New Jersey Devils legend Dr. Mike Emrick publicly announced that he would no longer be the play-by-play commentator for the Devils and MSG.  He has joined NBC/VERSUS to do play-by-play exclusively.  This left an opening for the Devils' television broadcast. Yesterday, it was revealed by Tom Gulitti on Twitter and Phil Mushnick's Friday article in the NY Post (via this thread at HF Boards) that it Doc's replacement will be Steve Cangialosi for this season as the play-by-play commentator for Devils games.  An official announcement will be made in the near future.

The initial reaction is mixed, to put it nicely.  For example, the initial comments in this Fanshot relaying the news by user Jimspires9 are good examples of how Devils fans feel about Steve Cagialosi.   I can understand that fans are nonplussed that the guy who has to fill in Doc Emrick's position is the guy who struggles with pronouncing "score" much less touch Doc's style of calling a game. I'll admit I'm not exactly looking forward to hearing "Shot - SCARRRR!" for as many as 41 games.   That said, he's a good - possibly the best - replacement for several reasons.

Star-divide

First: he's familiar.  Cangialosi has filled in for Doc for play-by-play duties on television in recent seasons when Doc was sick or working a national broadcast.  Many fans know his voice, his tendencies, and some of his quirks (SCARRRRRR). There isn't going to be any mystery surrounding what viewers will hear when they watch the Devils game on TV.    There isn't going to be any dashed hopes of how the replacement will do.  You know what you're going to get with Cangialosi at the microphone.

And if you're not, watch this video.  It's when Anssi Salmela scored a goal in overtime on March 12, 2011. Yes, it sounds like "SCARS" instead of, you know, "SCORES."

Second: he has plenty of play-by-play experience.  I didn't know that Cangialosi was in the business for quite awhile until I read his profile at MSG.  He's been in broadcasting for over 20 years.  In reading the profile, you'll learn Cangialosi has quite a bit of range based on his past jobs from doing specials, sportscasting, hosting shows, and reporting.   On top of this, he's the regular play-by-play commentator for the New York Red Bulls. While they are different sports and teams, he's experienced enough as a play-by-play person to know what such a role entails on a regular basis.  I don't know enough about the broadcasting world to know whether such experienced people are commonly available; but it's clear that MSG isn't throwing someone new into the fire.  At a minimum, we'll know that Cangialosi will be professional in his new role with the Devils broadcast.

Third, and the most important reason, Devils fans aren't big fans of him.  That sounds like a strange reason, but it actually helps Cangialosi and the broadcast. Let's step back a bit.  Doc is a legend, and I believe he's The Voice of the New Jersey Devils.  Doc is the pinnacle of a play-by-play commentator: he calls the action; he doesn't drone you to death by repeating the same phrases over and over; he gets legitimately excited when exciting things are happening or just happened; and he didn't dominate the game.  He called the game as it was, and how he did it made it worth keeping the volume up when watching the game.  Doc, in my view, was the best and I don't think I'm stretching in saying that many Devils fans feel the same way.

When a legend leaves their role, the replacement is rarely going to fit in without being in the shadow of that legend. Whatever they do will be compared to the legend - fairly or (as usual) unfairly.  Steve Cangialosi cannot possibly measure up to Doc.  I think he knows that and MSG knows that.  This is how the fans' dislike of this news or Cangialosi style helps him out here.  Again, many Devils fans are familiar with Cangialosi from his work filling in for Doc or the Red Bulls or the many other jobs he's held in the past.  Therefore, very few Devils fans will honestly expect him to be as good as Doc.  That's usually the rub: we can consciously say how we know X can't be as good as legend Y, but in the back of our minds, we cannot help but do this.  This is not one of those cases because fans weren't fans of Cangialosi even on a replacement basis.  Those who dislike him enough may not even be listening; but they won't be disappointed by someone completely new letting them down. Therefore, I don't think there should be an increase of pressure for Cangialosi to prove himself those viewing the game. Fans aren't going to dislike Cangialosi because he isn't Doc, but on his own merits - of which he has many from his broadcasting experience.

At worst, Steve Cangialosi will be a buffer as a play-by-play commentator.  He will do the job for a little while such that a future broadcaster isn't going into the position completely in Doc's shadow.  At best, Cangialosi will enjoy a long tenure as the play-by-play guy and will be judged on his own terms. He wouldn't be replacing Doc as so much following him.  I don't know how likely that will happen, but it's not impossible. A good first step for that would be making sure "score" replaces "scar."    I don't know how the decision process went at MSG to know who else was considered for the job to say he was the best choice in replacement; but it could be for the listed reasons.

If you're not familiar with Steve Cangialosi's work as a play-by-play commentator at all, then you may want to check out tonight's Red Bulls game at 7:30 PM on MSG+ to hear him in action (and go to Once A Metro if you want to talk about it).  I think he's better at calling soccer than hockey due to the slower nature of soccer, but that's just a personal preference.  Assuming you haven't, what do you think of Steve Cangialosi replacing Doc Emrick as the play-by-play commentator for Devils games next season?  What do you think of Cangialosi's style of calling a game? Do you plan on giving him a chance, or are you planning to have your mute button ready when you watch a Devils game? Please leave your answers and other thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading.

Certainly I have mixed feelings about this choice. He’s the most capable of any announcer to fill Doc’s shoes, but what big shoes to fill. At best he is a mediocre to above average announcer who can’t control the rhythm and excitement of a game nearly as good as his predecessor, but that will always be the issue when replacing a legend. I somewhat feel bad for him because of that alone.

I’m not a fan of Cangelosi, and I don’t know why I’m not. Where did I get the idea that he’s an unabashed Ranger fan or that he’s always secretly auditioning for other jobs? I don’t know. I do kinda hate shot scarrr and that he blew the call on the Zajac OT winner. My resolution for this season is to not dislike Cangelosi as much.

Why does everyone assume he's a Rags fan?

I have talked to him after games in the Goal Bar and he is not a Rags fan.
And who cares if he is, the Rags radio guy, Don LaGreca, is a diehard Devils fan.

Cangy’s a pro and a good PBP guy, except for the Scaaaar instead of score.

How do you know they did not offer Lagreca the job?

Maybe he chose to stay on the Rags radio station.

I do agree that LaGreca one day shou;ld be our PBP guy.

From his MSG profile John linked above:

Cangialosi, a New York native and graduate of NYU, lives in Manhattan and enjoys cooking, horseracing and the music of Little Jack Little and Basil Fomine.

Does this sound like a Ranger fan to you? Wait a tick…

Me either

Its ALL THAT MAKEUP he is more concerned about his appearance than his job….like that bimbo that is on the Isles broadcast the only reason she is on the air is because of her father….At least it’s NOT Stan!!

Wow...in the "old" days you would see me always in my jersey with a Devils Tail & Pitchfork...

Give the guy a shot, he deserves it

Steve is not so bad. He is not the best play-by-play announcer, Doc was, and I doubt there will be anyone to come along soon to challenge that. I think that when you are in Doc’s shadow you have limited options, and although you may fill in for him from time to time, you will never take his spot unless he quits. Well, he did, and this is in fact Steve’s big break. Maybe he was patiently waiting around all these years for this opportunity, and I am glad to see MSG give it to him. I remember meeting him up at the Goal Bar and he was stressed out of his mind but was also polite. I think he takes his job very seriously, and more importantly for us, he takes the team seriously. I believe in giving those that have given you their sweat & blood the advantage or the first chance at a position like this situation here. Sure MSG could have made several moves here, they could have brought in someone much better from some other market, but I think Steve at least deserves a shot first. Maybe his legacy is calling every goal a SCAAAAARRRR, but then again maybe not. I say we all give him a chance to prove himself, who knows maybe he pulls it together and surprises us all.

I don’t know who, out there, was available to fill the role that Steve Cangialosi took, that would have been so much better that they could replace a legend and get us fans past the unfamiliarity that almost any new play-by-play guy here would have. I figured it was between he and Matt Loughlin (who held Steve’s role for a dozen years before moving to the Devils radio). Matt Loughlin may have been better, and certainly has paid his dues longer, but it would have opened up another hole. But knowing Lou Lamoriello’s affection for things from the past, it wouldn’t have surprised me to see Gary Thorne be invited back to the Devils.

by dyhrdmet on Sep 10, 2011 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

Gary Thorne is currently under contract to be the play-by-play announcer for the Baltimore Orioles, so I doubt he could just drop that job to rejoin the Devils. I would LOVE to see Gary Thorne brought back to NJ once his contract expires (I don’t know when that is), but Gary is getting older, too. He’s 63 atm according to Wikipedia, so I don’t know how much longer he plans on broadcasting.

I’m not a fan of Cangy getting the job, but I don’t know who could have been brought in instead of him. I just find his voice irritating and his play-by-play commentating skills are lacking. I’m, of course, unintentionally comparing him to Doc and that’s not fair to Cangy, but I can’t help it. I just hope he gets better at doing pbp and that he’ll stop saying “Scarrrrrrrrrr!”. Maybe MSG is just having Cangy as an interim until they can lure someone better to do it.

by njdss4 on Sep 10, 2011 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

He’s definitely not as bad as people make him out to be, but we’ve been spoiled as devils fans; everything seems like last year’s leftovers compared to Doc.

Let me see...

How LONG have YOU been a Fan????
This team & the way it is marketed & run has always led to “problems”….The ownership has NO CLUE how to treat the fans….it’s been that was since ‘88
I have been a FAN since the first game….and FIRST season have the tix, pictures, tattoos, jerseys, auto’s & pennants to prove it…have followed this team all over the east coast and put more money into this team than I have made…..so I think some of us have a friggin’ right to complain when the management do STUPID things!

Everyone has a right to their opinion ,as you do.
Does not mean you are right though, nor does it mean that my opinion is better.

I pointed out that a lot of fans are complaining about either trivial matters or things the Devils have no control over.

I dont see how you can say this after reading your comments that say this:

The marketing slogan and ticket prices are certainly things the Devils have control over and Cangelosi taking over the reins is not trivial to many of us (as you can see in these comments). ‘True fans’ are the ones that complain and support the team regardless. If we didn’t complain about things, then you could say we arent true fans because we wouldnt care.

SCARRR

I kind of like it when Cangy yells SCARRR when theres a goal. Its like his “thing” – separates him (slightly) from a normal play by play guy. Without that hed be pretty boring/standard.

Anyone else with me?

I hope he does well, but no one can convey all the frustration and despair of hitting the post and then the euphoria of scoring the winning goal like Doc.

Im not a local so i had to buy the NHL network, so im fairly knew to watching Devils games on a regular basis (A year and a half ago). That being said I really liked Steve Cangialosi when i heard him announce some games, especially the 1-0 win against the rags with Kovy’s breakaway being the only goal. After Doc retired i was devastated but at the same time i was hoping and a tad bit excited that Steve would get his chance, becuase it brought something new to the table when Doc couldnt annoucnce our games and i liked his excitement and, yes, the “SCARRRRRR”

by tiggysiggy on Sep 10, 2011 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

i honestly dont mind his voice or the “SCARRRR!!!.” In fact that might actually be his attempt to make his own version of sam rosen’s “ITS A POWER PLAY GOAL!!”

What i do mind is how often he refers to the players by their first names intsead of their last ones. Heres what i mean:

“Marty makes the save. Now he dishes the puck to travis. he gives to zach who hands it off to jamie.”

its not the worst thing, but he does it so often that it seems really informal.

Does anyone else find it a coincidence that as Doc Emrick’s role has decreased over the past two years as he has begun doing more spots on Versus and NBC, and Steve Cangialosi has slowly taken over more and more on the MGS Networks that the Devils have begun to get worse as a team?! Doc backs off some and Stevie C takes over, then the Devils have one of the worst seasons almost ever?! Too coincidental for me.
Anyway, I don’t HATE Steve Cangialosi as much as others. I just wish that Doc never decided to leave. Money, more time with his family, less work… whatever the reason. I’ve been a Devils fans for 23 Seasons (Since I saw my first Hockey Game), and in that time Doc Emrick will ALWAYS be considered the voice of the Devils for me. I’ve watched the Devils win three Stanley Cups with that man at the wheel. No one will replace the impeccable and entertaining job that man has always done anytime soon… and that SUX!!!!! So it’s extremely unfair to expect the same kind of performance from Stevie C. I too will have to give him a chance and just deal with his quirks.

If you mean that Doc has magic powers that helps the Devils win, then it is just coincidence.

If you mean Doc doesn’t like the direction the team is going and is moving on, well that is at least plausible. But I tend to take Doc at his word that as he gets older he can’t maintain the work load and quality.

As far as tha Candyman, I think he does an OK job. Doc is the best so anyone would be a step down.

Some advice: Don't try to be Doc

He was able to fluidly describe exactly what was happening on the ice, as it happens. Pure gift. Most PxP guys speak a third as much, but still are decent. I think that is the key, you do not have to describe everything, it is not radio.

If he dials it back a notch, maybe he will be a little better.

Alas, he has now left, and I have no idea where he is now…
