Devils in the Details - 9/12/11

The origins of Ilya Kovalchuk's hockey life - FanShot

Jamie Langenbrunner has been named an assistant captain for the BluesThe Hockey News

Here is an interesting fact from Tom Gulitti's twitter - @TGfireandice

Obviously around this time, there is very little hockey news, but it will be picking up soon. If you find ANYTHING interesting and Devils or hockey related, please email it to me! I would love to put it in the post.

Here's a little story from the NY Post

Apparently, the Devils are having some significant financial issues. I found this through a FanShot at NetsDaily.

Devs fans over at HFBoards shot this down pretty fast, too. They said there were too many inaccuracies and nameless sources that added up to a BS story.

True, there were a lot of bizarre claims. I’m very glad that most of the NY Post story is wrong. Given the actions over the summer and the fact that this spread like wildfire (news came out this morning, no statement until the afternoon), though, I wouldn’t agree that there are no financial issues.

I don’t think the Devil’s are completely free of financial issues either (arena is still pretty highly leveraged, ticket sales could be better), but that doesn’t change the fact that this article by the Post appears to be irresponsible journalism at best and borderline libelous at worst.

Status quo.

The New York Post has always had something of a tabloid aura about it. It’s not surprising, considering their competition in the local market are a pair of behemoths — the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. If you can’t compete with them on even terms (and the Post certainly cannot), you might as well look for a different niche to fill.

I take everything the Post publishes with a grain of salt…. that is, if I don’t ignore it completely or ridicule it.

I really want to believe TG...

…but this is definitely the kind of story that the team would deny. True or not. The team’s statement cannot be trusted.

Unfortunately, it is also the type of story that could be self-fulfilling, even if it is false. If it spooks the new investors before they sign the deal, it could cost the team millions, or even blow the whole deal.

I hope the Devils aren’t having troubles, but I won’t feel comfortable until the deal is signed and Brick City is out of the picture.picture

No one is denying that the Devils’ ownership situation will be changing soon and that it’s affecting the team, but the way the Post article blows things this out of proportion is where they’re just looking for attention and page views. It’s also not like the Devils don’t have a buyer for the Brick City share, as TG said in the article that Vanderbeek is looking to acquire it.

They’re not new investors. JV is buying out the other 47% controlling interest. This story is rehash of ill-informed tripe we’ve all heard a dozen times already from mysterious “sources” giving the “insider scoop” to some news outlet. A completed buyout yields refinancing of debt to more closely coincide with the projected profitability of the whole PruCenter business plan. This kind of thing is done all the time in large scale ownership/control sales.

Nervous

I was at that preseason game between the Devils and Rangers but was nervous beforehand. My wife was affraid that another terrorist siuation was possible and felt that I should avoid a crowded arena. Of course nothing happened. The animosity between the teams and fans seemed to hit an all time low at that time.

I had heard from a friend that used to be connected to the Devils’ organization that the team was in dire financial straights. This situation, now confirmed, makes me more nervous than the Sept 19th game. I question the ability of the team to stay in NJ and their ability to come up with a financial package that will keep Parise a Devil. This situation has to make Zach question if he should stay here.

Of interest, I still have my 2 Yankee tickets for the 9-11 game that was postponed due to the terrorist attacks. I’m sure they are worth little to anyone but me, but they are a nice momento.

Don’t let a story from The Post get you nervous. Check out the article on Fire & Ice. Nothing is confirmed. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

TG has the full list: J.T. Barnett, Thomas Nesbitt, Steve Bernier, Anton Stalman, and Petr Sykora. Or: 3 right wings, a defenseman, and a right wing who was drafted at center.

I’ll have a short post on this later tonight. The first two were at Devils’ 2011 developmental camp.

I would absolutely love to be able to unretire my Sykora jersey…I haven’t had the stomach to wear it since he played for the Rags…

It’d be interesting to see what the analysis shows on Bernier and Stralman. Both fill needs – Bernier a big-bodied RW in the power forward mold, Stralman a R-handed Dman who can put up some points (well, in the Andy Greene-to-Paul Martin range at least).

If it's already been posted I'm sorry I missed it

Alexander Galimov who was the only player that survived the Lokomotiv plane crash passed away from the burns he suffered in the crash. The only good news to come out of this story is the lone crew member that survived is expected to live and will speak to investigators within the next few days.

From a Leafs perspective...

I did a brief comparable analysis of Steve Bernier and Clarke MacArthur back in June.

Not a lot of people agreed with me, but I think Bernier could rebound in the right circumstances.
