So is the Star Ledger completely oblivious to the fact that Chere just phones in 90% of what he gives them?
The Star Ledger has cut so far, there probably isn’t anyone left to watch the watchmen. They’ve increasingly outsourced a lot of stuff they used to cover themselves, they’ve substantially cut the depth of coverage on a number of things, and they’ve often cut other things altogether.
I predict the Star Ledger will fold within ten years, with a pretty good chance that it will happen in the next five. Therefore, why shouldn’t Chere “phone it in”? I imagine there will be a point in the not-too-distant future when there won’t be a paycheck for him to collect.
yeah the point is why even bother baying Chere when you can go find a kid out of college to aggregate the content, which is really all he’s doing.
Therefore, why shouldn’t Chere "phone it in"?
Because he’s shooting himself in the foot. You think another editor, newspaper or website is gonna come pounding down his door once he stops collecting his checks?
I don’t believe there’s going to be anything close to the volume of employment there is now. Heck, I don’t believe there’s going to be a need for anything more than Tom Gulitti as the “beat writer at large” if things travel in the direction I forsee. Unless Chere were to supplant TG, I don’t know that there are going to be any jobs to pound down his door, at least not in sports journalism or journalism-at-large.
I believe the industry as a whole is dying. The goalith newspapers will survive, but everything else will be electronic/wireless in nature by way of iPhone or what-have-you. Whether or not Chere is “phoning it in” will be irrelevant. There won’t be editors or newspapers to come pounding down his door, and there won’t be websites looking for his contributions (at least on a professional/paid level). The handful of newspapers left will either use the AP wire, or they’ll pay TG to syndicate his work if they wish to simulate “a local touch” to differentiate themselves.
Long story short, I don’t think there are going to be any jobs to pound down doors, Chere’s or otherwise. Sometimes, entire industries simply wither and die, and the people within those industries have to find something completely different to do.
I"m not gonna get into a whole thing with you but your assessment of the future to me is ridiculously off and I assume coming form someone who hasn’t ever worked in the industry. completely wrong. As we move more and more into the digital age, there will be even more opportunities for writers and bloggers be it either running their own sites or working for other media outlets.
Now sure salaries for the work may drop on the average and the competition will grow, but that’s no reason to pack it up and phone it in.

i’m not in the industry either, but the only thing i see wrong with acasser’s assessment is his negativity. there will be paying jobs, but journalism was already not a good paying job even when print media was centralized. the idea that there will be more opportunities is ludicrous – yeah, there will be more opportunities to make little or no money from writing.
chere’s worked for a daily newspaper for 20+ years, he’s not gonna be a blogger if the star-ledger goes under. your constant attacks on chere are strange.
