The Pros and Cons of Giving Petr Sykora a Contract

NEWARK, NJ - SEPTEMBER 23: Petr Sykora #40 of the New Jersey Devils takes the shot against the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center on September 23, 2011 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The New Jersey Devils are just about half way through training camp in terms of days and preseason games played. They have made only one set of cuts last weekend sending fourteen players to Albany and five back to their junior clubs. With over a week left and three more preseason games to go, the roster actually is getting closer to Head Coach Pete Deboer's (and Lou Lamoriello's) liking. There were a lot of questions coming into camp with young players and depth signings and those questions still hold water. Yet a new question has emerged - a question us fans did not see coming a couple weeks ago - a tryout player making the team. And not just any tryout player - former Devils veteran winger Petr Sykora. Does he get a NHL contract this season?

This isn't a unique issue at all. In fact, the Devils gave a veteran tryout a contract last year. His name was Adam Mair. It gave the Devils depth at center and a penalty kill specialist. The season didn't work out but I guess the signing did in retrospect with all the injuries. But that was last year and I'm about to vomit even thinking about it. This season is a lot different. Young players are ready to make the jump and play in defined roles this season - at least we think. There's a good amount of players vying for the bottom six to eight spots on the Devils roster, and Sykora has nothing to lose at this point.

Of course it's too early tell to answer that initial question without any grain of salt with it, but it needs to be discussed now. Sykora can make this team better, but he can hinder it as well. After the jump is more on Sykora and a list of pros and cons on the Devils giving him a contract for this season. Also after the jump is a poll question.

Star-divide

Sykora has played in two preseason games so far. He's tallied one goal and one helper with five shots. He's also a minus-2. His goal was in the first period against the Rangers up in Albany. He was good position around the outside the circle to get a pass from Adam Larsson from the point and his shot beat Henrik Lundqvist up high. What first created buzz was Sykora's hat trick in last week's scrimmage. Since then, he's been moving up in the depth chart.

Sykora initially knew his chances were low but was going into camp with a positive attitude. He was on a line centering Stephane Veilleux and Reid Boucher in the third practice group to start camp. In the scrimmage, Zubrus replaced Boucher with Sykora once again playing center. Zubrus set up Sykora twice and all three shots were glove side on Johan Hedberg. Two of the three were slap shots as well. Again, Sykora still knew it's a long ways away to get a contract. In the Devils first preseason game, he was on the third line with Veilleux and fellow tryout Steve Bernier. In the next game, he was moved to his natural position of right wing with Mattias Tedenby and Adam Henrique. Now for the last two days, he's been with Zach Parise and Patrik Elias.

It's not uncommon for a tryout player to get moved around during training camp, but Sykora is the only one this season that is actually moving up. Is this is a hidden sign? He's been impressive since other players have noticed him. So what does he bring to the Devils?

Pros

Right Wing/Center Depth - The Devils don't have many right wings. Kevin pointed that out a few weeks ago and with Zajac out, that's one less center as well. Sykora has practiced recently at both positions. It's never a bad thing to have too many of one position (look at the defense). If anything this is creating good competition (which is one of the reasons tryouts come in) during camp. Also, injuries happen and Sykora may be a better option than a player who may not be ready to fill the void.

More Offense (in bottom six) - Sykora has a great shot, there's no denying that. It's quick, deceptive and accurate. His career shooting percentage is 11.7% (Hockey Reference). If he does make the team, it's more scoring with what should be a more offensive, high-tempo team. Since the top six is mostly filled, Sykora may find himself on the third line. There are guys like David Clarkson, Eric Boulton, David Steckel, Vladimir Zharkov, and Rod Pelley that he may be lined up with. That list contains no one that has a shot or scoring capabilities like Sykora. This gives the Devils the potential to have three scoring lines - a much needed asset in today's NHL.

Veteran Presence - I know the Devils have plenty, but this is a pro. Let me explain. There are a few players I didn't mention above who may end up in the bottom six. Tedenby, Henrique, and Jacob Josefson when Zajac returns may need a veteran to line up with. I don't think guys like Clarkson or Boulton are the best fits. Sykora can compliment the young players both on and off the ice. It was noted that he was directing young players on where to be during the second preseaosn game. Also, what if these young players aren't ready to take defined roles? Sykora is learning DeBoer's system and it would be no problem if some of the kids need more time to develop in Albany.

2nd Unit Powerplay - it seems the 1st unit is stacked with players like Parise, Elias, Zubrus, and Kovalchuk. But can the Devils depend on guys like Palmieri, Clarkson, Tedenby and Josefson on the 2nd unit? Sykora would be a great fit to a powerplay that must produce this season. What better way to have another shooter?

Cons

Injury - Sykora suffered a concussion with the Minnesota Wild during the 2009-2010 season. Since then he has not played an NHL game. He went through waivers that year and no one picked him up. He played in 13 games in the Czech League (with a PPG average) and played in 28 games for Dynamo Minsk in the KHL last season. He's not a big guy either, so he's prone to injuries. Sure he's playing well now - but we have no idea how his conditioning and body is and how that may affect him 30, 40, 50 games down the road. Is that a risk the Devils want to take?

Age - He's not young either. He'll turn the dreaded 35 in November. Do the Devils sign another aging forward like they have in the past couple seasons (Rob Niedermayer, Dean McAmmond, Mair)? They just got rid of aging players - Do they really sign one back and defeat the purpose of making this a younger team?

Consistency - As I said, he hasn't played in an NHL game in over a year. He's injury prone and old. How will this affect his consistency. Sure he's scoring goals now, when it doesn't count. For all the pros I listed, it means nothing if he isn't consistent. He's had up and down seasons throughout his career. Do the Devils take that chance and hope this is a good year for him?

Defense - Sykora is far from a good defensive forward. If he is lined up with young players, he needs be responsible in his own zone. His last three seasons in the NHL he had a negative Corsi ON (-8.3 in 07-08; -9.88 in 08-09; -1.65 in 09-10)  [Behind the Net]. That's not something I want to happen nor should the Devils. Let's hope he's old enough to play two-way hockey, but should the Devils even take the chance?

So in a matter of two weeks, the Devils have to ask themselves these questions and a bunch more on Sykora. Practices and games in this time will hopefully answer them - or give them enough to at least predict them. He's a low risk, high reward signing. If it doesn't pan out, the Devils can try to trade/waive him. If it does and he produces, then great.

Also remember, the Devils are on a budget. It was discussed when the Devils bought out Colin White and traded away Brian Rolston. What the budget is isn't known and it won't be. Does Lou even have the power (this seems odd writing this) to even offer him a contract ? Sure it would be around the minimum ($525k), but when it comes to a budget, it's up to Jeff Vanderbeek first.

So I ask you Devils fans - from what you have seen so far, do you give him a contract? What are some pros and/or cons you see that I didn't list. Let us know. Thanks.

Low Risk High Reward

You would have to think the Pros out weigh the Cons the way you have laid them out. Shrugging off the “budget” this guy could really help this team out in a lot of ways. Truth be told you had me at “2nd unit power-play.” He offers a lot to the bottom six that is not already available. I would really like to see how a Tedenby, Sykora, Clarkson line would work out. If he gets injured, has conditioning issues, or just plain stinks, you cut him and move on with what you would have had in the first place.

I would rather see the 35 year old Sykora in this line-up than the 2 goon fight night that would be Jansen and Boulton. You also would think that Sykora’s defense would at least rival the defense of either of these guys.

I never realized how good he was on the PP until I checked his profile on hockeyreference. If he could manage something like 8-10 PP goals this year on the 2nd powerplay unit, while playing around 10 minutes of (relatively soft) ES ice time, he could certainly be a valuable contributor to the team.

I think he has deserved it, it won’t be a 35+ contract since he turns in November and I like the fact he can score. So… when are we trading Clarkson?

I also like the speed Elias, Parise and Sykora would have on a line together. I also believe Sykora could go anywhere in the lineup. Plus he was a Detroit Viper!!!!!

Yes, Lou has the money to sign Sykora, it would cost very little to do so. I don’t think he’d get a minimum contract; he’d get something like $750,000.

Age and injury are fine – if the Devils are playing a playoff game with Petr Sykora in the lineup, there’s trouble. But assuming that his attitude in camp isn’t just for show, the Devils could ease him out of the lineup later in the season when Zajac returns. Or, unfortunately, it’s more likely that he will get hurt and become less effective.

I don’t know how I stand on it. It probably can’t hurt, but it’s not likely to help, either – Sykora’s skating speed is largely gone. Still, he’s a smart player and he still has that shot.

Ok

He might not have the speed anymore. So we could use him at the point on the 2nd PP unit. I really don’t think Lou would give him more than a minimum contract but considering how much he gives every 2nd time around Devil, the guy could be looking at 3 years 9 million!

Why sign him at all if his only value is to fill in when people are hurt?

If he can’t be a full time player scoring 20+ goals I don’t think I’m interested.

because the devils don’t have much forward depth, and players get hurt a lot.

Corsi Concern

Was Sykora really to blame for those Corsi numbers in Minnesota? If he’s in the bottom six, then the likelihood of him seeing tough competition will be low. Also, he’d be out with young forwards who may not be good defensively either. If he’s paired with Elias and Parise then Corsi probably won’t be a concern anyways.

He only played in Minnesota for 17 games, so it’s a small sample. His Qualteam was 0.001 and his Qualcomp was -0.025. In 08-09 his Qualteam was 0.263 and his Qualcomp was 0.020. In 07-08 his Qualteam was 0.186 and his was Qualcomp 0.034. All from behind the net (link in the article)

Overall, he’s had better teammates and worse competition. I don’t think he’s going to be on a line with Parise and Elias (I feel that spot is for Zubrus but he’s hurt right now).

Also, he’d be out with young forwards who may not be good defensively either.

For as much I would love this, it screams defensive lapses. Also, I don’t want him playing center. I think with Zajac back I would want this for the lines (and if Sykora gets a contract):

Parise-Zajac-Palmieri
Kovalchuk-Josefson-Elias
Tedenby-Zubrus-Sykora
Zharkov-Steckel-Clarkson
(Boulton and Pelley)

The youngs guys are split up, there’s size and speed on every line and a natural scorer(s) in the top three lines.

Elias is a center. He is not a right wing.

Zubrus, I’m pretty sure, is going to be a wing full-time.

Elias is a winger and a center. I feel he’s versatile enough to play anywhere. Zubrus has experience at RW and C as well. If it suits you, switch them on the lines I listed.

i’d switch a lot of things, though.

parise-zajac-zubrus
kovalchuk-elias-palmieri
tedenby-josefson-clarkson
boulton-steckel-zharkov

is what i would probably do. but it’ll all be moot in a few days, people get injured – it’s likely that that lineup will never take the ice for the devils.

These I like actually – where would Sykora be? If he doesn’t get a contract, I would be fine with those. So trying to throw Sykora in there I guess complicates things? I’ve been thinking though – is Palmieri a lock in this line up?

Maybe Sykora plays RW with Parise and Zajac – Zubrus moves down with Kovy and Elias and Palmieri gets tossed in with the bottom 6.

With a healthy lineup, Sykora is a healthy scratch. I don’t think Palmieri is a lock, but I wouldn’t play Sykora with Kovalchuk.

I feel as though RW would be the worst possible position for Patrik because it would hamper his #1 asset; his creativity. It is so much easier to make plays coming down the Left Wing as a lefty than it is coming down the Right Wing as a lefty. I feel that putting him at RW would hurt his playmaking ability too much.

by dkball7 on Sep 28, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah. lemaire tried him there in 2010 and it just wasn’t working. the devils have a dearth of creative players – they should be accentuating their players’ strengths, not weaknesses. elias’s shot isn’t what it once was.

Elias is a center. He is not a right wing.

We should wait to see what happens between Josefson and Kovalchuk until Travis comes back before taking this as a sure thing. Time will tell, but a great chemistry between the Russian & JJ wouldn’t be broken that easily, especially if the team’s winning.
Moreover Matthew’s right, If someone as to switch his position that should be Patrik… He’s such a versatile player.

As has been said, this is extremely low risk/high reward. If he clicks with Zach and Elias, that’ll be an absolutely explosive line. If not, put him on a lower line with, say, Teddy and Henrique/Zubrus. That’d give us three lines that could score.

by skly27 on Sep 28, 2011 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

There’s little risk when it comes to any veteran tryout. I think he’ll be signed because at worst he’ll provide depth and competition for the younger guys. The odd man out, though, will either be Adam Henrique or Nick Palmieri. I think Henrique impressed DeBoer the other night and I don’t think Palmieri has done enough to guarantee himself a roster spot, but if Sykora is around one of those guys must be sent to Albany. Is that what’s best for them and for the team? I don’t know, but when an injury inevitably happens I’d sure rather have Sykora around than not.

by dr(d)evil on Sep 28, 2011 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

I think something else you need to consider also as far as unexpected people making the team is, Anton Stralman. In comments made today by Peter Deboer he seems very high on him. It will be very interesting to see who is starting on opening night.

by Jacob Shepherd on Sep 28, 2011 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Perhaps Stralman himself making the team is a bit unexpected but it was no secret that the team was looking for another offensive defenseman for the bottom pairing or #7 slot. Many of us thought that Taormina would be the guy, but with Stralman seemingly outplaying him, it isn’t too much of a surprise that he could make the team.

If it comes down to Fayne, Fraser, and Stralman for the #6 and #7 spots (assuming Salvador and Larsson make it), you have to give the edge to Fayne and Stralman, although (as many on here have said) having Fraser as a #7 isn’t the worst thing in the world.

And dressing 7 per game? I made that suggestion a few months ago (forgot which message board) and I think it still could ring true. In theory, the Devils don’t really need a 4th line LW since Parise/Kovalchuk should be averaging upwards of 20 mins per game (Kovy a bit more obviously). Personally I’d rather have someone like Fayne or Stralman in the lineup than Boulton or god forbid Janssen.

by dkball7 on Sep 28, 2011 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

no, i think they’d be dressing 6 most nights. they didn’t sign boulton and janssen to not play them.

Well Janssen is 2 way so one has to hope he will rarely play. I could see 6 per night with occasional days off for Salvador and Volchenkov (due to injury) and Larsson/Fayne/Stralman/Fraser (due to inexperience and quality of play).

Do the Devils have an open roster spot? I thought we were at 51 players with a limit of 50 (or was it 40).

by NJHockey8 on Sep 28, 2011 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

I believe they have one spot open. There was some confusion about whether players that were tendered qualifying offers but went to play in other leagues counted against the 50-man roster. (John pointed that out in June and I did here in August), but that’s actually not true. It’s signed contracts (SPC). If Larsson doesn’t play in 10 games in the NHL, his contract slides and doesn’t count against that – but that seems iffy more and more.

Per CapGeek, the list is at 48
, but Perkovich re-signed. Noreau hasn’t been heard of actually. He isn’t on the training camp roster and I haven’t seen his name around much. So that leaves one open spot.

Not from me! (he says with dripping sarcasm….)

Noreau is in Italy and Perkovitch was signed strictly to an AHL deal. If the two tryout guys are signed then the Devils are at their max. Only Larsson has a contract that can slide at this point.

The only time there might be a problem would be if they wanted to add someone to a roster via trade without giving a player back OR signing a college/major junior FA before 4/15.

sykora

IMO, the guy fills a gaping hole on the top 6 RW. Just look at our depth at RW…. Zubrus, Zharkov, Palmieri, Clarkson, and possibly Tedenby. Out of those choices, only Tedenby might be a good top 6 RW. Zubes isnt… He might be decent on possesion and in the corners, but his passing isnt that good and his shot is even worse. He is an overpaid 3rd liner. Palmieri isn’t more than that either right now… Maybe in the future, but not now. The rest are 4th liners. A speedy RW that can pot 20 goals or so for 1 mil a season should be a no brainer. If I see Clarkson on our top 6, I will be sick.

I’m going to be That Guy and say that he doesn’t get a contract unless he absolutely wows everyone in the next three games. He’s really not as quick as he once was, I don’t know how much he can really contribute at evens since he likely won’t be in the top 6 to help him out (assuming they would), and I’m still put off on the fact that he wasn’t in the NHL since 2009. Yes, I know he’s recovered from the concussion and I’m not saying players who’ve played in Europe can’t make a comeback; but my fear is that while he looks good now, which I think is laudable, but two weeks into October we’ll be saying “he’s done.” Without allaying that concern, I don’t see giving him a contract of any kind to be a smart decision.

I think I'm going to cry

I had about three-fourths of a rough draft of this exact article saved on my hard drive when I went to sleep last night. (Well, maybe not the exact same article, but very similar in many aspects.) I figured I’d dust it off once I had the computer to myself this evening and finish it as a FanShot…. and I’ve been beaten to the punch. Time to go hit the ol’ delete command on my draft.

….

I’m going to agree with John on this one, and I don’t think he gets a contract. To add to what has been written above by canibalizing my non-article:

  • I don’t view him as a substantial upgrade over the other forwards competing for jobs in the bottom six (or on the 2nd line). That isn’t just the wings we’ve mentioned in this light before: Clarkson, Palmieri, Tedenby. It’s also guys like Zharkov and Pelley who may be a healthy scratch on a semi-regular basis. It’s the marginal guys who may be depth in Albany until they’re needed (such as Sestito and Mills). It’s the rookies who might otherwise get an opportunity to “break through”, such as Henrique.
  • I don’t see Sykora being asked to contribute on the PK. I’d prefer not to burn out my top forwards by having them on the PK all the time. Guys like Steckel and Zharkov and Pelley have demonstrated their ability to handle that role to some degree…. and I saw Mills and Sestito both given extended auditions to do the same last Friday night.
  • In terms of finances, adding Sykora would be asking ownership to commit additional money. Not necessarily a full $525k (assuming Sykora gets the League minimum), because if Sykora replaces a guy on a two-way contract, that guy’s salary likely decreases as a partial offset. We’ve heard the ominous words such as “budget” from Lou Lamorello this summer…. and I have to wonder if Sykora offers enough to justify using some of whatever Lou has left to spend.

I voted “no” in the poll above. I’d have voted for a third option if it were available: Give Sykora the “Adam Mair treatment” from last season. In greater detail, I’d ask Sykora to stick around with the team for a week or two once the season opens, but unsigned. I’d give the guys already under contract the opportunity to demonstrate they can handle the job…. heck, I’d give Adam Henrique an opportunity to earn that spot for the first ten days or so and see if he can cut it or if he’d be better off going back to Albany. If there’s a need for Sykora at that point, sign him. If not, wish him the best and go your separate ways.

I’d also be intrigued if Sykora were willing to accept a two-way contract and let him play at Albany while things develop. If another team comes calling because they are interested, let him go free…. if not, he’d be a possibility as our “In Emergency Break Glass” forward.

by acasser on Sep 28, 2011 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Both the Adam Mair treatment and two-way contract are interesting options. I don’t know if he’d be amenable to such treatment but it’d be the smartest way to go.

Preseason is tough to evaluate, many of the legit NHL players aren’t going at full speed. I’m afraid that signing Sykora will deprive Henrique of an opportunity, but on the other hand I don’t have much confidence in Palmieri or Clarkson. And while I believe that Tedenby’s offensive skills are progressing, I don’t at all think he’ll be very consistent with his point production.

by dr(d)evil on Sep 28, 2011 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Henrique’s not playing RW, guys. He’s a LW/C. I don’t think Henrique will be deprived of an opportunity.

Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines

by Triumph44 on Sep 29, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

There are guys on the roster who can play both wings. Dainius Zubrus is capable of playing any of the forward positions. Mattias Tedenby is a “natural” LW, but he played a fair amount of RW last season.

If you keep Sykora and flip one of those other guys to the left side, that could potentially take an opportunity away from Henrique. Not that this should necessarily enter the thought process of whether or not to tender Sykora a contract, but there is a ripple effect where bringing one guy on board can deny someone else at a different position an opportunity.

by acasser on Sep 29, 2011 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Mair stuck around because the Devils couldn’t sign him. Sykora shouldn’t have to do that – either they know he’s ready or he isn’t. Going to Albany would just be a waste of everyone’s time.

Sykora will cost less than a million dollars, and will not be a significant expenditure because he will be taking the spot of someone on a two-way contact.
