Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

This is the new team of Alexander Vasyunov (Yaroslavl HC Lokomotiv). For now there's only 3 survivors on 37 passengers & I don't know if Sasha was on the flight.

Sad Horrible news anyways

Update: There's only one survivor now, critically injured, he's been taken to hospital.

Editor's Note: Lou Lamoriello gave a statement here, reported by Tom Gulitti. His thoughts on Alexander Vasyunov makes this sad news feel a little more sad.

This is terrible. Former Devil Karel Rachunek also on the roster.

Former NHLers also include Pavel Demitra, Brad McCrimmon, Karlis Skrastsins, Ruslan Salei, and Josef Vasicek

According to Dmitry Chesnokov, the entire team was on the plane.

This is absolutely awful. It literally makes me sick to my stomach.

Brutal news. RIP Vas.

From NE
The Yak-42 was on its way to the Belarusian capital Minsk and had 37 people on board. Reports indicate there is one survivor — a crew member — who is in serious condition.
Of the 26 players on the Lokomotiv roster, all but five are Russian born. One Lokomotiv official tells Sovetsky Sport that “everyone from the main roster was on the plane [plus] four players from the youth team.”

RIP guys. We’ll miss you.

vasyunov and karel rachunek were among ex-devils lost in the tradgedy

unbelievable. i fly all the time but i have a phobia of planes because of stuff like this. i never feel safe in a plane until it lands.

i believe that one survivor is the young forward with burns on 80% of his body. this is frightening. the plane split in two. one half hit the ground and burned up, the other half sank into the water.

I don’t think this is the time to panic on the airplane industry. Russia’s flight safety record since the fall of the Soviet Union hasn’t been good at all.

If you are nervous about getting on a plane, I’d read “”http://www.amazon.com/Ask-Pilot-Everything-About-Travel/dp/1594480044/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315433910&sr=8-1" target="new">Ask the Pilot.." Good book. My roommate in Hoboken was also a pilot, which answered a lot of questions in conversation too.

When I saw LaBamba as a kid, I never wanted to fly for years and even skipped a family reunion in Italy that I’ll regret forever.

I’m completed devastated by this news and wondering how the international hockey community will respond. But the terrible news is not going to stop me from getting on a plane.

Sorry

Sorry the link didn’t work on the book, but the author also has a Salon blog. I’m betting he’ll be writing something soon on this.

Wow I also have a fear of flying from the LaBamba movie too, ironically today is buddy holly’s birthday.

Beside all that. The crash has been troubling to follow throughout the day. I’m sorry for their families,

Moreover, the “expiration of service” date for the plane it self was apparently October 1, 2011 and it may been ruled by the EU to be unusable in EU aerospace. Yep, this plane was supposed to be grounded in three weeks and was ruled to be not safe to fly in general in Europe. And yet it was the team’s charter. Horrible.

This story makes me sadder because the team were victims. Not of their own designs, all they did was get on a plane to go to a game – a normal function for many pro sports teams. Yet, they suffered because a plane was out there that probably shouldn’t have been. Awful.

I hope all involved in keeping that plane in service are publicly crucified. The KHL is not some dinky league off in the middle of Siberia. It is the premier ice-hockey league of Russia, there is no excuse for them to make such horrible cuts. I sincerely hope there is a gulag spot waiting for somebody.

Really tragic.

I hope they are at peace, their families grief is brief and comforted by good memories.

Note

Tomorrow: I breakdown Alexander Vasyunov’s one NHL goal. Call it a tribute, call it what you will, but I think it’s worth remembering.

From my old roommate the pilot
You could not pay me enough to ride on anything made by Yakolev, Tupolev, or Ilyushin. Russian airspace, aircraft, air traffic control, navigation equipment, etc… is DECADES behind us. Most of their resources were devoted to military spending and the civilian side is an unfortunate casualty of that. I won’t ride it unless it says Boeing or Airbus on the side.

Probably going to be the worst day in hockey in a long long time. To think it could have been avoided if Russia was a little more careful with their airplanes. A real shame.

Apologies

I couldn’t update the fanshot anymore… I begin to realize that this is just over, there is nothing more to say.

so sorry for their families.
