New Jersey Devils at Edmonton Oilers - Gamethread #43
New Jersey Devils at Edmonton Oilers, Jan 11, 2012 9:00 PM EST
The Time: 9:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast:TV - MSG+; Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils (22-17-2) at the Edmonton Oilers (16-22-3)
The Previews: Tom did the preview this morning, you can check it out over here. As for an Oilers' based perspective, Derek Zona has this breakdown of news; and Scott Reynolds has this preview/gamethread over at the Copper & Blue.
A Song for Tonight: You know you know this one: "18 and Life" by Skid Row! Burning ELCs has been the Edmonton Way in recent years, so I feel it's rather appropriate for tonight.
Gameday Info: You know what the Devils didn't need after a game where the other team went 6-for-14? News that Travis Zajac will be out for 2-3 weeks. Tom Gulitti reported this morning that doctors recommended that he be kept out due to his sore Achilles; and so the Devils have complied. Here's some more news that Devils fans probably don't want: Cam Janssen will be back in the line up tonight per the middle of this Gulitti post. He's replacing Nick Palmieri, who has done incredibly little in his chance to make another case for a NHL spot. Expect Janssen to miss on hits and charge into nearly all of them. I'll be hoping he doesn't do anything dumb. One more thing, Johan Hedberg will get the start tonight as Gulitti confirmed this afternoon. For all the talk about Brodeur needing to bounce back, how about Moose? He allowed 4 goals out of 9 shots last night and hasn't had a solid outing in over a month (feel free to argue for the last Florida game - if you want to ignore the two goals he allowed that he could've stopped). Who knows, maybe it'll be tonight. Anyone expecting any changes on defense shouldn't hold their breath; it'll be the same six guys from the Calgary game.
With respect to the Oilers, their official website reported that Nikolai Khabibulin will get the start; and that since Ryan O'Marra is ill, they called up Milan Kytnar. That's the Milan Kytnar of the ECHL Stockton Thunder. Expect him on the fourth line with the Boulton & Janssen like wingers of Darcy Hordichuk and Ben Eager.
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Interesting 3rd and 4th lines.
Boulton-Carter-Clarkson
Janssen-Zalewski-Tedenby
Is this good? I’ve got no idea. Instead of stacking the uselessness on one line, DB is spreading it out to two!
Is this good?
In a word: No.
In a longer word: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

not good, but Tedenby has not done anything to impress and his last game was poor. But he does have speed and could cause problems in a 4th line match up. or maybe we just have a balanced 4th line.

Boulton-Carter-Clarkson
Janssen-Zalewski-Tedenby
Why is Tedenby playing on the right? He’s a left winger. At least make the goon switch to the other side.
You do know that just because MSG posted it on TV doesn’t mean that it is accurate.

You think so, too? I always thought we could do a “Chico says the Darndest Things!” show after a game and not lack for material. Kind of how some WFAN hosts would do something similar with John Sterling after some Yankees’ radio broadcasts.
I love watching him struggle to speak or finish a sentence or pronounce everyone’s name. I also love watching how much Steve hates sitting next to him.

We need to REALLY capitalize on the Penalty Kill.

Or trade for Zenon Konopka…. Konopka would fit with our “fourth line”, only he really has some decent face-off skills.

Mattias Tedenby needs to spend the summer with a strength-and-conditioning coach. I’d strongly advise 10-15 lbs of muscle and a little bit of snarl to use it.
If not that particular coach, how about an ornery European like Bobby Holik?
I thought he would have done that over last summer, but i completely agree.

Paging DeBoer
Your 3rd and 4th lines are USELESS.
When will he understand that Boulton and Janssen add nothing to the lineup?
I don’t want to defend PDB here, but I’m going to give it a shot:
It may not be entirely PDB’s fault. IF this is the roster Lou has stuck him with, and/or this is the roster Vanderbeek’s finances have saddled us with, there may not be too many other options. Sure, we’d probably prefer to see Palmieri and Taormina in the lineup over the “enforcers”, but would that really make much of a difference?
This team just isn’t that deep or that talented. If PDB spread out the talent to make three viable lines, we’d end up with guys playing first-line minutes who don’t belong anywhere near the Top Six of an NHL roster’s forwards.
….
The short version: DeBoer’s hands are somewhat tied.
Maybe PDB is trying to rest the first line.

Jamsen has more ice time at this point than Elias and Zubrus. Maybe Deboer wants to intimidate the oilers youngsters.

Seriously? Who can the Devils possibly get for him at this point? I can’t imagine he has much trade value, and I can’t imagine this team taking on much salary with the financial catastrophe that is Vanderbeek/Brick City. That doesn’t leave much else.
Did you think we were going to get Kovy for Bergfors, Oduya and Cormier?
There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

Yes.
If you dig back through the archives on this site (and some of the other SBNation hockey-related sites), there was a whole series of articles and commentaries on what Kovalchuk was worth on the open market, including many SBNation blogs “making offers”. I thought it wouldn’t take much more than what it did, although the offer I submitted at the time was built around Zubrus instead of Oduya.
Well, you have a lot more savvy than I do, cause I thought it would take a lot to get him and I basically thought we stole him.
There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!
"I was in the moment, and the moment said smack you." - Bruce Willis
I don’t want to trade him, but I seriously feel he’ll never get to play the minutes he deserves on this team. Play him in better situations, and that’s where the confidence and stronger defensive game is going to come. Playing him 3rd/4th line isn’t going to help his defensive game because those lines suck on defense.
Possibly the oddest pair of first periods I’ve ever watched.

Devils down 4-9 in SOG. I thought the Devils had 5, but whatever. What a sloppy period. The Devils struggled to make passes, much less get in position to get shots. Oilers came close a few times, but Moose actually made more than 5 saves, so it’s all good at 0-0.

Which total will be greater at the end of the season?
- Shorthanded goals scored by the Devils.
- Shorthanded goals allowed by the Devils.
(We’ll judge right and wrong in mid-April)
Kovalchuk with pressure, won the puck, drew a call, and scored a highlight-reel worthy goal. 1-0 NJ

Our bottom six
is an utter disaster right now. That includes Tedenby, who I have always been a supporter of, but he has no confidence right now. I think the best thing for him would be for him to get first line minutes in Albany, score a few goals, then maybe come back up for the stretch run.

by SantonioBurress on Jan 11, 2012 10:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I could go for a Tedenby-Josefson-Clarkson reunion tour as our 3rd line once the team gets back from Winnipeg.
I agree
But Tedenby is a completely different player than he was last season at this point. When Zajac and Josefson come back, a trip to Albany may be what he needs.
Tedenby has spent most of the season playing with guys who probably should not be in the NHL. Sometimes one on his line, sometimes two. That makes it hard to get the best out of him.
T-J-C seemed like an effective third line last season and even put up some offensive numbers. Zajac isn’t going to be back for a while. I’m willing to re-assess once Zajac is healthy, but I have an uneasy feeling that isn’t going to be this season.
Oh, I hadn’t heard Zajac would be out for a while. Then again, i hadn’t heard anything about him. If he is out for a long time, then I agree with your idea of what our 3rd line should look like.

I thought I understood the rules, but there are 2 rules I apparently am not smart enough to comprehend.
1) Icing, they seem to call it off for no reason.
2) Goalie interference, sometimes its called, most of the time its open season.

Lol
I played hockey, but since the changes they made to the icing rules, my girlfriend can now predict icing better than I can. And she watches maybe three games a month.
Goalie interference seems to be an iffy issue. They tend to not call it when they should as far as I know.
Icing is when a player dumps in the puck from their own end, and it goes untouched through the neutral zone to past the goal line. A player from the other has to touch it first to initiate icing. It isn’t icing if the goaltender touches it.
Correct me if I’m wrong in any specific point.
I understand the basic icing rule, i just don’t understand when they call no icing on a play that should be.

End of 2nd
Oilers end the second period with a PP and some chances. Devils showed some improvement at evens. 10-6 in the 2nd for SOGs in favor of Devils. Corsi jumped up to -5 after -13 first period, so we can say the Devils really did do better in 2nd. Kovalchuk is the reason it’s 1-0 NJ.
Side note: stop taking penalties, Devils. Yes, Kovalchuk’s SHG was sweet, I don’t want there to be a PPGA either.

by JTdevs on Jan 11, 2012 10:42 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
alright you’re right i don’t hate him but i definitely think he’s not good and shouldn’t be on this team
There isn’t a better alternative to take his minutes and role. There also is little likelihood of moving his contract right now, and the Devils aren’t going to pay him to play in the Minors/Europe.
No matter how much you might like a prospect such as Alexander Urbom, there’s no way he’s ready to take on that level of responsibility.
no definitely not, but anaheim might have someone or maybe we could rob tampa and get kubina and give them henrik (and probably something else). make sort of a lateral move if a team that’s struggling has some experienced Dmen that want to just shake things up to try to fit other players in their systems, see how they do.
Don’t go looking for unicorn trades to bail you out — it ain’t gonna happen.
Tallinder has two more years left on his contract after this season. That’s going to make it hard to move him in light of an uncertain financial landscape down the line, because nobody knows what the CBA is going to look like.
Anaheim has no reason to trade for Tallinder — they’re probably looking to rebuild from scratch if one believes the statements coming out of California. Tampa has a smart GM, one who probably sees no need to make such lateral moves…. let alone one where he takes on two years of salary for no good reason.
You’re stuck with Tallinder, whether or not you like that. I’d suggest getting over it and making the best of the situation.
I like him. He’s tall and skinny and likes Iron Maiden. He was solid as hell during the 2nd half last year, and I think he’ll find his way again soon.

Anyways, were we really expecting a 1-0 win?

For a moment there, I kind of was.

You know what would be nice? The Devils getting some offense. Ice has tilted back in Moose’s direction.

Chico says the Darnedest things!
Are we really worried about “killing the Devils playoff chances” with one loss in January while the Devils are still in a Top 8 spot?
hah and to a Western conference team at that

To be fair, Chico probably thinks Edmonton and Ottawa are the same team.

Good re-direction in front by Kovalchuk. It appears one line remembered what offense is.

Ryan Carter and Eric Boulton a 2-on-1. Carter’s pass gets through, puck bounces over Boulton’s stick. So it goes.

You mean the 2 on 1
with Boulton and Carter didn’t work out?
Screw fairness, Chico. That opportunity wasn’t converted because it involved two players who should not be on an NHL roster.
michael boulton could have put that one in

Devils get a point out of this Alberta part of the trip. Devils -20 in Corsi to end regulation. So many shots were blocked; Devils pinned back too many times in third.

It worked your way, but I still would have preferred a fourth forward. There isn’t anything to lose in OT against a team from the other Conference.
Sure there are things to lose when you consider a) we want another point, b) our past record of letting up shorties, c) Foster is a better option at the point that Clarkson any day of the week and d) Clarkson shouldn’t be on the PP to begin with IMO

Did the Devils play well tonight? No. Oilers owned possession in first and third periods, Devils took 4 bad calls (Elias’ was #5 but it was weak, of course it became the PPGA), and they had to block a lot tonight. Moose had a very good game, I’m happy to see him do well. Kovalchuk was one of the few Devils who did well at evens; great to see him get the SHG and set up (in part) the PPG OT winner.

In a results-oriented business, the win’s more important than the performance. Devils have to do far better in Winnipeg on Saturday, though.
