Henrique and Larsson to Represent Devils At the All-Star Rookie Game
First off, on a serious note, congratulations to Adam Henrique and Adam Larsson on being named as representatives in the rookie game. Both of them are deserving of the honor. Henrique is 2nd amongst rookies in scoring and is tied for the league lead in SHGs with 4. Larsson leads rookie defensemen in points and all rookies in Ice time.
/Rant However, I have a bit of a problem with the Devils representing the big game- none. Patrik Elias (15-25-40), Zach Parise (15-23-38) and Ilya Kovalchuk (17-21-38) are all snubbed in favour of big name players on popular teams.
What's laughable about the whole thing is that there are several players on that team that shouldn't even be there in the first place. Corey Perry, Alex Ovechkin and Marian Gaborik are all there based on name recognition. There are three Devils with more points than those three, yet none were selected. Jarome Iginla and John Tavares I can understand, they're pity selections because their teams have no one else who can represent their teams. But Gaborik, who's only accomplishment is scoring 22 goals (he has less points than Elias, Kovalchuk and Parise and does nothing short handed) is a fit because he's on a good team? Or Ovechkin, who has as many goals as Kovalchuk but doesn't even lead his team in scoring (Nick Backstrom does). /End Rant
The only good in this is that three of the team's most important pieces get rest over the break. Elias is 35 right now and could use a break. Kovalchuk is logging tons of ice time and could use a break. The same could go for Parise. This whole thing could be a blessing in disguise, but I'm still pretty annoyed that they got snubbed.
Edit: I didn't throw this in, but there's the whole possibility that they could've been named to the team but declined because they wanted to rest. Teemu Selanne and Nick Lidstrom were asked if they wanted to, but declined. Maybe they were asked by the team before the selections, and then declined before the selections were formally announced.

I recall Elias being reluctant to go to last season’s ASG but he knew if he didn’t then the team would have no representation. With Henrique and Larsson going to represent our youth movement I think it’s okay for Elias to sit this one out and take a few days off.

Oh look, more proof the NHL all-star game is a circle jerk for the popular kids.

I’m not going to lie to you. It felt good and I’m going to do whatever is in my power possible to stay there as long as I can. - Petr Sykora on playing on a line with Elias and Parise.
Our Hated Rivals
I have to accept the fact that Queen Lundqvist is having one of the best seasons of his career and that the fragile Marian Gaborik is having a career year as well. Fine. That’s okay. Congrats guys, really.
But Dan Girardi? Is there some kind of award for blocking shots that I don’t know about because Volchenkov would be a five-time all-star if there was. I mean, Girardi isn’t even the best defender for the Rags statistically. Michael Del Zotto is ahead of Girardi in the following categories: Goals, Assists, Points, +/- Rating, Shooting Percentage, Power Play TOI/G. The only categories Girardi leads in are ES TOI/G and SH TOI/G.
Does having a cute kid on an HBO special get you into the ASG these days?
Our second-most-hated-rivals have four players representing them, but two of them are in the rookie game. Claude Giroux is probably going to be a candidate for the Hart this season, so that’s an acceptable choice. Kimmo Timmonen has done a good job filling in for the loss of Chris Pronger so I can’t really fault the NHL on that choice either.
But Dan Girardi? Come on guys. There are 50 NHL Defenders with more points than Girardi and that includes Joe Corvo, Alex Pietrangelo, Nick Leddy and Ian White, all of whom are arguably just as important to their team’s success as Girardi is to the Rags. This is the only pick that I strongly disagreed with. I think there’s a huge mis-perception about how good Dan Girardi really is.

There’s a chasm in the levels of competition Girardi (and McDonagh) face compared to MDZ. He was rewarded for chewing up minutes this year, a lot of them heavy, without his normal defense partner. Top 60 among D scorers is still 1st pair production, so it’s not like he’s completely useless at one end. Since you brought up the comparison, he’s got as many points now than Volchenkov’s had in any of the last 5 seasons.
Is he overrated defensively? A bit. Are there better d-men (and more deserving)? Yes. Heck, even Girardi said he’s not sure what he’s doing in an all-star game. He got in because he’s the most important defenseman on the team with the most points in the East. That has some weight beyond the boxscore numbers.

This is an embarassment. But what do you expect when the NHL “All-Star Game” has two contradictory goals? (choose players most worthy based on their first half / represent every team) It leads to situations such as Carey Price making the club because Montreal must have a representitive.
(Quick digression — too long for sarcasm font, so I’ll settle for italics.)
Do any Moose advocates want to argue that Hedberg belongs in the All-Star Game because his numbers are right around where Price’s are?
(Back to my rant.)
Major League Baseball has this same ridiculous rule, and it has led to some equally questionable inclusions and exclusions. Major League Baseball also has the same quandry with contradictory goals (include a player from every team / but it matters because of homefield advantage in the World Series!) The NFL has it less wrong — you can argue about their selection process and how catastrophically flawed it is, but there isn’t a rule that every team must be represented even though there are 40-odd roster spots for each Conference and only 16 teams to draw from.
Is this year’s ASG going to be any better / more marketable because you’ve included John Tavares and Carey Price? I think not. Is it fair to Edmonton and Carolina and Columbus that they won’t get to see any of their players in the “real game” because all they got were rookies like us?
Change the stupid (expletive deleted) rule: A representitive is only mandatory for the host city, for the defending Cup champion, and for teams above a certain performance threshhold. Even if you set the bar at the laughably low figure of “NHL .500”, you’ll likely open up a few more slots for deserving players because you won’t have to search for “All Stars” on craptacular clubs. Either that or get rid of the fan vote and create a half-dozen slots that way — if the players in question are worthy, they won’t need the fans to vote them in to begin with.

I feel your pain brother. My blood is officially boiling. Whether or not players can decline to attend, the selection process is about as reasonable as the BCS.
What would Scott Stevens do if he saw this? Hopefully something violent and unspeakable…

Harrison Mooney (of Puck Daddy/Pass it To Bulis) suggested Fans vote in the Captains, and everyone else gets chosen on Merit. That way fans can get the representatives for their team in (in Ottawa’s case, Daniel Alfredsson) and the rest can get in based on their performance.
Keep in mind the all-star voting would’ve been ripped if James Reimer was voted in. Man, there would’ve been enough backlash to get rid of the voting scheme.

Why would Kovy be in the ASG?
According to some really smart people cough LeBrun cough, the Devils should consider him for an amnesty buyout next year.

lol that would be beyond idiotic. the only thing worse than paying kovalchuk $88 million for the rest of his career would be paying him like $44 million to not play for your team when your team is facing potential bankruptcy.

First LeBrun Kovalchuk quote written on December 6th, 2011:
He(Kovalchuk) has always been a total enigma to me. I know from talking to people who know him well that he’s misunderstood. He truly cares about winning. But to have his kind of talent and have only six goals in 20 games this season (plus a minus-11 rating) is truly mind-boggling. From day one, his signing in New Jersey never truly fit. His linemates often look like they’re forcing passes to him. He should have taken less money and gone to Los Angeles in the summer of 2010. I think he would have found better chemistry with Anze Kopitar, much like he had with Marc Savard in Atlanta.
Second LeBrun quote on December 13th, 2011:
“From day one, I’ve been on record saying I didn’t like this fit. And you know who is breathing a sigh of relief right now? The Los Angeles Kings. Despite L.A.’s struggles, I can assure you the belief in the Kings front office is: Thank god we didn’t sign him. Here’s what could save New Jersey if GM Lou Lamoriello does determine that it was a mistake to sign him. He may not agree with you and me, Bob. But if Lamoriello comes to that conclusion next summer, there’s a possibly the next CBA could help him. In August 2005, after the last lockout ended, there was a one-time provision for teams to buy out one player without it counting against the salary cap. Should this provision somehow appear again (and the players will have a big say in that), then the Devils have a big decision to make: get him off the books or not.”

Thank you for this. I can’t say it much better than everyone else has when they refer to this a total embarrassment. I knew the rule about each team being guaranteed at least 1 player, but I had no idea that having someone on the Rookie team constituted as qualifying for this rule.
I’m seriously baffled. The NHL honestly made the decision to not include Zach Parise in the All-Star game? I don’t even know what to say. It’s such a joke. Lou should see if this counts as us giving back a 1st round draft pick to the league because it’s just as ridiculous.
