New Jersey Devils at Winnipeg Jets - Gamethread #44
New Jersey Devils at Winnipeg Jets, Jan 14, 2012 3:00 PM EST
The Time: 3:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast: TV - MSG+; Radio - 1130 AM WBBR
The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils (24-17-2) at the Winnipeg Jets (20-18-5)
The Previews: My preview from way earlier this morning can be found right here. As for an opposition point of view, canadian texan has a short preview over at Arctic Ice Hockey (and I hope Kane-Little-Wheeler really isn't a line, that would be really hard for either Elias or Henrique lines).
A Song for Today: The Binary Code is a progressive death metal band from Bergen County. Their one release, Suspension of Disbelief, can't be found in stores: it's digital-only as far as I can tell. In any case, here's one of the songs from that album the band released on their Youtube account: "The Story."
Gameday Info: Bad news: Adam Henrique will not play today according to this post from Tom Gulitti due to a minor groin strain. Dainius Zubrus will replace him at center; David Clarkson will play at right wing on the Elias line; and Nick Palmieri will play with Mattias Tedenby and Ryan Carter on the third line. Hopefully, this minor groin strain is exactly that: minor.
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Noooooooo!
I got so excited for a second there.
Im surprised Zubrus is centering the top line, and they didnt slide Elias up to center Kovy / Parise, and Zubrus centers Sykora/ Clarkson

You’re still Thrashers.
He was mostly on the third line in the 8 games he played in. They can be fine.

hell of a shot
by bertuzzi – I have to say the detroit wings have been amazing since the mid 90s (after the loss to us of course) – they consistently have been contending every year, and they have recruited well (the passing, the puck movement is so fun to watch, wish we had that as consistently as they do), and lidstrom is still playing. I wonder if Niedermayer stayed with us, and was still playing how much better we would be – god we need a stud no 1 d-man.
anyway, detroit is america’s team – saying that as a huge devils fan,
It’s funny they’re jeering Marty, considering he nearly has 300 more wins than the Jets had throughout their stint in Atlanta.
Are they saying party? Maybe they’re saying party. The WinniKeg is tapped and ready.

robinson teaching him – guess he is only 19 – give him a break considering how he’s considered our no. 1 d if not no. 2
If he’s on the ice, I’m going to judge him accordingly.
Also: Who think he’s a #1 or #2 defenseman right now? On what basis is he that high up?

I wouldn’t consider him a #1 or #2, maybe in a few years, but he’s learning right now. Plus you did want him in Albany this year John. You had good reasoning, but that wasn’t too be. It probably is for the better that he is learning on the fly in the NHL, so he does have the likes of Robinson and Stevens to teach him. Stevens still is an assistant coach at home, right?
well who's our
number one – the guy has probably the most ice time out of all the players – he’s putting up no 1. ice time numbers – dont’ tell me Tallinder is?
We have no no. 1 vet d – Larrson is our best all around d-man even as a 19 yo – that’s how bad our D is
janssen
is playing — he is the worst to watch – might as well throw a hockey stick on the ice, just as effective – please dump this guy soon, we don’t need him anywhere near the rink.
I don’t agree with you. Their is a reason Lou re-acquired Janssen, and I think it has to do with the overall dynamic he brings to the locker room.

Why boo kovalchuk?
If the guy had of signed with Atlanta.. there would be no Winnipeg Jets right now.
Expecting sense from a franchise that hardly acknowledges that they’re not the same Jets as the old ones (who’re currently in PHX) is a bit of a reach.
by Pete's Petes on Jan 14, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions
Not likely – Atlanta Spirit wasn’t all that interested in keeping the team with or without Kovalchuk.
And so what if the opposing fans boo? Did I miss a memo over why that’s a bad thing? Should we expect them to greet the Devils with polite respect?

Why not, they should be decent folk. Or are they not?
I agree with you John. We boo Crosby and taunt Lundqvist when they come to our building, why is it bad when other people do it to us? It’s called being a rabid fan.

Why entice Kovalchuk? He’s talented enough as it is without playing with a chip on his shoulder. Booing him will only motivate him even more.

So…if a guy starts throwing bombs at you before you can flip your lid you get a penalty? That’s genius, league.
that was a bad penalty kill, with the goalie being the best killer

Jets didn't score
that makes it a good penalty kill. Gotta expect the goalie to make a save once in a while on the PK.

Believe it or not, the first period was even by the numbers. NJ led in shots, 7-6. NJ leads in shooting attempts with a +7 Corsi Yet, a whiff by Brodeur (or a tip by Larsson) makes it 1-0 Winnipeg. That’s big for the Jets since they didn’t score at all on Thursday. Harsh considering Brodeur bailed the Devils out of their one PK; but so it goes.
The possession makes me feel somewhat confident the Devils can get back into this.

There is nothing that says that Hedberg is any more consistent. Im sure the second he gave up a softie you guys would turn on him, throw a fit, and demand Marty back. Show numbers that says that Hedberg is a goalie that can be depended on night in and night out, but until then I still support Marty.
by Jacob Shepherd on Jan 14, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions
See, this is exactly what I’m talking about. At no point did I say what you’ve been bleating about Hedberg for weeks on end was irrelevant. I said it’s noise – as in, it’s an annoyance, it’s a statement and an argument that fewer and fewer people even want to have. That you see this as some kind of conflict and your consistent insistence of repeating the same point over and over has led many just to not even care anymore. That you’re just as hard-headed about Hedberg’s real failings furthers this point.
So go ahead: keep typing the same words over and over. Eyes will just keep on rolling.

We know that he can produce in the NHL, as he showed that down the stretch last year, but he’s just struggling right now. Trading would be a bad thing, number one because he has less value, number two, he can be a good player, a top nine forward at the least/
i wonder where the devils would be if they just kept trading away new players that are under 23 years old and not scoring at a point-per-game pace.
maybe he needs to actually develop a little.

without knowing any of the advanced #’s, I feel like Tallinder is having his strongest game since coming back from the back injury
He’s -2 in Corsi, but he’s playing behind the Elias line, which hasn’t done well today. I’d agree he’s having a good game. He did get robbed by Pavelec.

Second period over
Devils did out-shoot the Jets, 9-6. Devils up +3 in Corsi. Devils need to attempt more shots on net. The Jets aren’t swarming the Devils so a comeback is certainly possible; but they need to get more offense more often to make it happen.

Yep Tallinder and Salvador are having good games. How about the offense starts chipping in?
Go Devils

Kovalchuk, Parise, and Zubrus are doing their part in terms of possession; granted the attempts are largely coming from Mr. Kovalchuk.

sorry it's off topic but I think it's so freaking funny
Cammelieri gets jettisoned pretty quick after his “we’re loser” comments.
Go Devils
Go Jets
He wasn’t quoted for saying “we’re losers.” It was “we are playing with a losing mentality.”
The media took it and ran away with it.
Well, he wasn’t wrong given Montreal’s moves this season.
That said, Habs Eyes on the Prize is probably a better place to discuss it. They would also agree with the losing mentality process given their GM has been so dumb.
