The Mattias Tedenby Situation

Personally I like Mattias Tedenby, but he has not been producing this season, which is a great shame given some of the highlight reel stick handling goals he scored last season.

His shot count is slightly lower this year, 1.1 S/G, opposed to 1.5 S/G last year. However it is his shooting percentage which has taken the largest drop, 2.2% S% this year, opposed to 9.2% last year.

Could some of his lack of production be due to playing with Clarkson who as we all know, is more of a shoot first, ask question later, kind of player than a passer? In the last game against Winnipeg Teddy appeared to be fairly free in the slot but Clarkson opted to go for the Clarkaround™ (which failed), rather than pass.

Tedenby has average 10 mins TOI per game, according to behind the net. Last year he was playing on average 10.5 mins TOI per game, so he is not having reduced minutes this season. Then again line mates may well have a bigger impact than TOI.

This is my first post, hope its ok. Just wanted to see what you all feel about Tedenby?

Tedenby could probably use some time in the minors, but who would you call up in his place? He’s better than Palmieri, but don’t think anyone in Albany is better than him.

Vladimir Zharkov would be a huge upgrade over any winger on the fourth line.

I couldn’t agree more and don’t understand why he is not here now. He should be in front of Carter, Zalewski, Bolton, Jansen, and Palmeri. You could argue that he should be in front of Tedenby also because he is musch better defensively and would be playing in the 3rd period wehn Teddy is on teh bench and would help on the PK.

Maybe not Carter, but the others for sure. I don’t see why our 4th line couldn’t be

And Teddy needs either an increased role, or more time in the minors.

I forgot about Zharkov and know you’ve been really high on him for a couple years now. Yeah that would seem like a decent swap Zharkov for Tedenby. Worth a shot.

I agree that Zharkov would be an upgrade on the 4th line. At this time, I rather have Zharkov play than Boulton, Janssen or Palmieri. The Devils can use a 4th line that DeBoer is not afraid to play in the 3rd Period; a 4th line that plays significant minutes.

Regarding Tedenby, I believe that once both Zajac and Josefson return to play and get their groove back, Tedenby will benefit from playing alongside one of these centers. And, he better start producing by then.

Tedenby is playing better of late, but he plays with the cancer “AKA DAVID CLARKSON” so he doesn’t get the puck a lot.

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

Can you call someone a cancer when he has 15 goals and is a positive presence on the team?

Yeah, I can. He has so many goals because he keeps shooting, but if he’s getting 15 goals but could have 10 while Tedenby has 10 instead of one, what’s Clarkson good for?

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

I’d like to see Tedenby score 1 goal, With his stick. Before blaming his line-mates.

by NJDOhio on Jan 15, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, I doubt at 21 he has suddenly lost his ability to score. The difference is that in that video he’s playing with real players, Elias, Kovalchuk, Arnott, Zajac, not David Clarkson and Ryan Carter.

by wolfcaster on Jan 15, 2012 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

There could probably be another video similar to that for Palmieri who also played on a quality line last year.

At 21 I’m not sure he has ever had the ability to score.
Tedenby played 58 games last year and had 8 goals. That is not exactly lighting it up.

He has not been that good.

by NJDOhio on Jan 15, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if you can say he’s a “positive presence.” True he has scored 15 goals, but we don’t know how many goals have not been scored because of his terrible hockey sense. Who knows how many rushes he’s killed just from constantly being off-sides.

by wolfcaster on Jan 15, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Thats dumb to assume that not playing with clarkson would cause other players like tedenby to produce more. Tedenby can barely stand his ground with the puck. If Clarkson were to give Tedenby more passes and then tedenby gets smashed onto the ice like he always does and would most likely lead to a a turnover instead of Clarkson putting the puck into the net. I cant believe people are bashing a player who is on track to get his career high goals. It comes off as ungrateful. Clarkson is better than Tedenby and the stats prove it

If we’re looking for the “Tedenby of last season”, isn’t that the guy who spent half the season on a line with Clarkson (and Josefson)?

….

Tedenby isn’t playing well enough to justify a larger role. If PDB were to simply give it to him because “the kid has talent” or some other rubbish, doesn’t that risk losing other parts of the locker room? I’ve heard reports that most players like how PDB defines roles for players and sticks to them. Assuming that’s true, I’d hate to step away from what seems to be working right now.

The other part of the problem is the Devils’ lack of depth in general. At this point, we all have to accept that the fourth line will not have NHL-caliber players on it. While there are the quantity and quality of injuries the team has now, the third line isn’t going to be very good, either. If the injury situation moderates to the point where the Devils can ice a fair-quality third line, and PDB finds a way to not stick them against the other team’s best players most of the time, I think their numbers will trend upwards of their own voilition, for whomever is on that line.

by Felon on Jan 16, 2012 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe Teddy starts on the second line. Maybe it would have been Adam Henrique, or Vladimir Zharkov. Maybe Lou Lamorello keeps David Steckel, or makes a trade to get a winger from outside the organization. Any way you slice it, trying to figure out what this team would have looked like sans Sykora and how various lines might or might not have gelled and played wanders into the realm of speculation.

Tedenby’s “job” at this point is to play hard every shift and make good things happen. That doesn’t mean he has to score a certain number of goals or tally a certain number of assists, but it does mean he has to be a net positive when he’s on the ice. If he can do that things will eventually get shuffled about, either because someone gets hurt or because PDB feels a need to change lines…. and that’s when Tedenby could find himself in a more prominent role.

by acasser on Jan 16, 2012 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

He is still a kid, how about we let him become a full-grown man before we start panicking.

I think people underestimate how bad Clarkson is

He only has 4 assists, that’s fewer than Bryce Salvador, Henrik Tallinder, and Anton Volchenkov; not to mention he plays on the power play. I’m not a professional athlete, but I have played soccer and hockey all my life and I can honestly say that I would hate to play with a player like Clarkson. Yes, he does have 15 goals, but 2 of them were stolen from other players,I mean the puck was behind the goalie, going into the net and he just hit it again.

by wolfcaster on Jan 15, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

This is a good point. Clarkson really only has 13 goals.

True, one was Patty’s and I think the other was Zach’s. But, kudos to Clarkson for being in a good position to tuck in a rebound. Both probably would’ve trickled in anyway, but you never know.

I’ll assume that Clarky credited Patty and Zach by picking up their tab at dinner.

He’s a decent guy and seems to be a kind and genuine person, but he could dish the puck a bit more.

Because Henrique has size and skill and let’s not forget plays on the top line with Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise, not saying Henrique isn’t a great player, but he’s probably playing over his head at this stage.

by KovyisLove on Jan 15, 2012 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

You also forget Henrique’s a center and Tedenby’s a LW. He’s already got Parise and Kovalchuk to compete with, and now add in Petr Sykora this season… he’s basically relegated to the 3rd line unless someone gets hurt.

by Kevin Sellathamby on Jan 16, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Clearly, the mere 80 games he’s played on mostly the 3rd line means he’s gonna be an AHL player for life.

Not to say there’s any comparison besides size, but St. Louis struggled early in his career and the Flames gave up on him. Look at him now.

Teddy is only 21, soon to be 22. Let him be. He’s a better option than some of the players we ice now, and he can really only improve.

by skly27 on Jan 19, 2012 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

Purgatory.

It’s a communication problem.

It seem’s Teddy’s been in third-line purgatory (turd-line turdatory?) without many offensive weapons to either a) set him up or b) follow him into the zone as he advances to quickly an without support.

The communication problem: DeBoer hasn’t been able to reach him to express that his 1-man stick-handling efforts aren’t working. The numbers say it, but Teddy’s game hasn’t changed any.

That’s my theory.

That said, he has drawn some penalties as I recall. Mostly holds, hooking, etc I bet.

by Alan Wright on Jan 15, 2012 7:07 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He’s a good player, and has shown that he can score, but he hasn’t had the type of linemates that he needs to succeed. We all know that Clakie is a shoot first type of player, and he isn’t playing with a good center. Until Zajac and Josefson come back, I’m not sure if there is much we can do to help Tedenby.

by NJGuy on Jan 15, 2012 7:33 PM EST reply actions

I don’t get why people want to trade Tedenby when his value is low. Do you expect him to eventually be even worse?

by popp on Jan 15, 2012 11:41 PM EST reply actions

Just my two cents on Tedenby:

a) He’s a small player. Smaller players take longer to develop. Last season, he “burst onto the scene,” and by that, I mean that he was able to simply use his raw skills before he truly learned the North American rink and the NHL game. He scored some spectacular goals, but teams learned how to defend him.

b) He plays like he’s 6’5", and by that, I mean that he tries to throw his body around when it’s very easy for opponents to hit him and shut him down. His game is a finesse game, not a physical game. He shouldn’t try to play bigger than he is.

c) He needs confidence somehow. Martin St. Louis struggled early in his career with Calgary and the Flames gave up on him. Now is not the time to give up on this kid. He’s incredibly skilled and I believe he’s capable of being a top-6 forward at the NHL level, but he’s got to take one step back to take two steps forward. It’s too late to send him back to the SEL, but at least let him re-gain his scoring touch and confidence in his skills in Albany.

Once the Devils’ centers are healthy, the Devils could ice Henrique, Elias, Zajac and Josefson as their four centers. They could do away with their horrendous fourth line and ice four quality lines. If Tedenby could bring any kind of goal production to the Devils, it would benefit this team tremendously heading down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs. Until then, he needs to find that lost scoring touch. It starts with confidence, and he needs to leave the NHL for a while and take a breather in Albany, where he can play bigger minutes, too. He’s almost useless playing with the players he’s with now and with the confidence he has now.

I think the main problem is not his ice time, but the quality of teammates he has had throughout this season. It’s virtually impossible for a player like him to succeed on a line that has some combination of Jansen, Boulton, Carter, recently Zalewski, etc. Putting Tedenby out on the ice with Jansen and Carter is basically like asking him to go on the ice and do it all himself. He’s not going to get fed a great pass, so he can’t use his speed to rush up the ice and expect a nice pass out of the zone. He can’t dart into the slot hoping one of his linemates will hit him with a feed. So if he can’t depend on them in the offensive zone, he basically has the task of getting the puck himself and stickhandle his way through trouble until he gets to the net (and we’ve seen him try this several times). If they’re in the defensive zone, his best hope is either a defenseman gets the puck and makes the breakout pass, or he is able to carry it out himself; if one of his linemates ends up with the puck for the breakout, who knows what will happen?

Basically, he can’t trust his linemates. This also happens to be the reason that I find it harder than some other fans to evaluate his defensive proficiency. How good can we expect him to look if he’s out there with Sestito and Boulton? I know he’s had some opportunities here and there playing on the third line, but I imagine it’s hard to suddenly get used to playing with much better linemates in just one game, and one game is often the longest those opportunities last.

(Anyway, I’m just ranting. I hope this isn’t poorly written, but it’s 2:28 AM, so I’m sorry if it is)

by Dr. Witticism on Jan 16, 2012 2:29 AM EST reply actions

I have to kind of take back the beginning of what I said before. I don’t think quality of his linemates is the main problem, but I do think it could be one of what is likely several major problems. I can’t say he would be better if given better linemates consistently, but I do think it’s possible.

And to echo an already oft-repeated sentiment: yes, Zharkov should be ahead of all the fourth liners currently on the team, including Tedenby. It’s a travesty that someone like Jansen or Bolton gets a significant amount of games while Zharkov toils away in Albany for absolutely no recognition from the coach.

by Dr. Witticism on Jan 16, 2012 2:45 AM EST up reply actions

As much as I love Tedenby...

Sending him to the minors is the best decision. I know he would definitely produce if he were on a better line, like with Zubrus and Elias, but he isn’t being given the chance and being stuck on a line with Clarkson (who is a puck-hog) isn’t helping his development. We should do what the Rangers did with Del Zotto. They sent him to the the minors as he was in his sophomore slump so they could avoid it and he could develop his game. Now look at him. He’s playing incredible and he improved his game to new heights.

by Devils1192 on Jan 16, 2012 12:30 PM EST reply actions

The lack of confidence is the biggest thing I’ve noticed this season. Last year there were times you couldn’t get the puck from him in the offensive zone. Now he seems skiddish and looks to dish it quickly.

Let him get top line minutes and dominate in Albany.

Teddy is a skill player, and one that (at this point in his career) needs other skill players to flourish. He can make some great passes and has a decent shot, but right now (sans Zajac on that third line), he has no one to set him up and Clarky seems to be 50/50 for when he can actually handle a pass or not.

He’s only 21. Give him time.

*Also, wouldn’t he be subject to waivers if he were to be sent down? For a 21 year old forward, the limit is 80 games. Thus, someone could pick him up for free.

LOVED THIS KID

Last year. This year we have seen him work really hard on the forecheck but thats about it. He is on his knees or his butt every shift. He gets knocked down so easily. I wouldnt be upset to see him sent down for a while. I also wouldnt be opposed to trading him for a fair return. The only thing that makes me nervous about a trade is something that DOWNGOESAVERY brought up. Tedenby has potential, and when you mention a name like St. Louis, I can understand the apprehension.
