New Jersey Devils vs. Winnipeg Jets - Gamethread #45
Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils, Jan 17, 2012 7:00 PM EST
The Time: 7:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast: TV - MSG; Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Game: The New Jersey Devils (25-17-2) vs. the Winnipeg Jets (21-19-5)
The Previews: My preview from way earlier this morning is right here. For the opposition's perspective, canadian texan has this preview over at Arctic Ice Hockey.
A Song for Tonight: Tom, possibly sarcastically, suggested some E-Town Concrete. Sure. Here's "Battle Lines" from The Renaissance. I couldn't tell you why that's the title of the album.
Gameday Info: I guessed wrong in my preview, Chris Mason will get the start tonight. Per acasser in the comments of the preview, Brian Munz of TSN reports that Mason will start back-to-back after shutting out the Senators last night. Also: since the Jets are playing the same lineup, that means Blake Wheeler won't play tonight. Speaking of players who won't play tonight, Adam Henrique will be held out of tonight's game as reported by Rich Chere this morning. While he's improving, the team is taking a cautious approach with the rookie. Expect David Clarkson to play with Patrik Elias and Petr Sykora; while Dainius Zubrus takes Henrique's spot in between Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Two Devils will return to the New Jersey lineup tonight. According to this report by Chere, Jacob Josefson will play in between Ryan Carter and Mattias Tedenby; and Brad Mills will be at right wing on the fourth line with Eric Boulton and Steve Zalewski. I'm curious as to how Josefson will perform in his first NHL game since breaking his clavicle in October. As for Mills, he has to be better than Cam Janssen, right?
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Im not all that high on Brad Mills, but he did do some good things with his first stint with the Devils. He did a lot of bad too, but I assume that anyone who isnt named Cam Janssen is better than Cam Janssen. Mills had some solid minutes with the fourth line and even a little PK time too. He was aggressive, but not stupid (unlike Janssen). I have a Biology lecture from 7:10-9:50 tonight so I will be checking in here occasionally during the note taking process for updates. As always, Go Devs!
I assumed Pavelec started yesterday against and would’ve went B2B against two tough teams. Turns out I had the wrong goalie

They just showed how Antropov and Little haven’t gotten goals in 13 games. They’ll both get one tonight :-(
Go Devils
Go Jets
Attendance not very good tonight. Its certainly not bad considering nearly all of the upper sections are filled, but there’s at least two lower level sections morE than half empty and that’s not including the black seats

Tuesday vs. Winnipeg is always going to be a tough one to fill up.
/rant
I’d like to reiterate a point I’ve felt for a while. I HATE the black seats. They kill the atmosphere in all but the fullest of arenas. I know the Devils are just part of a trend that has become rampant in sports with this, but I hate that no one can afford to sit in the best freaking seats in the house. I know some people are up in the bars sometimes, which is another problem entirely, but damn it, it is irritating to see the best seats constantly empty. I’d kill to be able to get seats that good, God knows the seats elsewhere are expensive enough, though. I understand it’s all about the bottom line, but It just seems like if you could get more people to the arena, you will more than make up for it with insanely overpriced concessions. GAH.

to collapse and outnumber the other team’s player by 3 to 1 – it’s really dumb, and we get beat even when we do that, besides leaving the points somehow wide open,

what’s everyone’s feeling of the editor at puck daddy? listening to a radio show i guess it is? kevin weekes saying that marty refused to evolve, the editor i’ve noticed is such a self-deprecating devils fan he’s like so afraid to look like a homer at the expense of being impartial about the team. i wish he’d stop writing about them.
I’m surprised Weekes would say that. Evolve in what way? I find Marty constantly changes his style slightly. He tries new things out all the time.
He’s also the reason there’s a trapezoid behind the net.
by SonicJoe on Jan 17, 2012 9:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
All good players are constantly tweaking their game to add things. Think Michael Jordan adding a fadeaway jumper to his game.
If you’d prefer a hockey reference, think Sidney Crosby. They said he wasn’t much of a center because he sucked at faceoffs, so he spent a summer working on that and his percentage skyrocketed. Then they said he wasn’t a great player because he didnt’ score enough, and he came back the next season and won a Rocket Richard.
that’s what’s weird to me, i’ve seen that he’s a devils fan but every time he writes about the team it’s never a good slant. hearing him at the beginning of that clip it sounds like he’s just trying to fit in with what ignorant commentators say about marty but doesn’t actually know what the team’s been through. “oh he should retire right now”— really? has he seen the team?
that’s the other thing— he’s constantly worked on puck handling, shootouts, rebound control, but because he doesn’t like to change his equipment he’s stubborn?
You also have to realize, he’s a Devils fan, but doesn’t seem to watch the Devils much because he’s an out of market guy, he lives in DC i believe. You can see that when he talked just recently about the Devils not needing a good goaltender because they have an outstanding defense.
he said they have an outstanding defense? then i really have to question how much he actually knows about the team. he probably shouldn’t comment on them if he really doesn’t know what’s going on.
If you have GameCenter or Centre Ice, it’s so easy to catch all of a team’s games that physical location means absolutely nothing.
Marty is one of those rare transcedental players. You know a guy is really, really good when they change rules specifically to limit him.
He’s not that player anymore. Heck, he’s had enough nights this season where he couldn’t carry that player’s jock. Now and again, he reaches back into the timeless ether and summons that player for a game.
(Of course, as I say this, he lets one up)
i guess i should say my point is the editor of those yahoo blogs sounds like he’s too concerned with not being seen as a homer and kinda bashes the team and its players here and there.
Kovy getting 40 goals

Who here thinks Kovy will get 40 goals. (19 after tonight in 45 games).

He’s very streaky, so it’s certainly in the realm of possibility. I’m not saying he has to channel last year’s version of Second Half Beast Mode, but he probably needs to have a stretch of two or three weeks where he averages a goal per game to make it there.
I don’t think he gets there. But if he puts up 35-45-80 this season (or something similar), that’s good enough for me if the team is successful.
Don’t think it will happen, but its not unreachable.

defense men have been unbelievable tonight.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

Patrik Elias, goal scorer.
1995 - 2000 - 2003
Now they’re just padding stats and running up the score. Please, please, please save a few of these goals for Thursday night, you might need them.
Can't wait the shoutout

Elias essentially iced the game with that one.
That said, Zubrus didn’t have to trip that Jet.

This game is fun...
but I miss Henrique. He’s made himself a big part of the team.

Let me guess the Zubrus line will have insane Corsi numbers

Karlsson has nothing yet. Ottawa, on the other hand, has rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a lead even though the Maple Leafs have unleashed a shooting gallery at Craig Anderson.
That’s good for my fantasy team. I have Anderson. I’ve been riding him all season, as I just dumped Mason for a backup.
Let Ottawa win. We have games in hand on them. Better to put some more distance between us and Toronto. Good luck to your fantasy team. :-)

That surely explain why he's not an All-Star

It could still happen. There’s going to be at least one replacement amongst the forwards, as Jamie Benn (Dallas) will probably pull out with his injury and there’s time for someone else to get hurt / give birth / win a Caribbean cruise.
sincerely I don’t want to see anyone at the ASG. They all need so much rest.

Take a drink
Although I suppose confusing Sykora with Josefson is somewhat better than mixing up a hulking Lithuanian with a smallish Minnesotan.
And game.
Nice solid win. Bring on Boston!!

With this revolving door strategy – Is he on the 4th line now?

I missed the game tonight
(Going back to college in South Jersey sucks)
How did Josefson do tonight in his return?

Greatood game.
5 goals; Devs Chased MAAAAASSSSSOOOONNNN! Solid defense, then better defense. Marty was good. Teddy looked good tonight and so did Josefson in his return. Salvador has been very very good lately and Larsson made a couple solid one-on-one plays (except for one early in the game where he pinched into the neutral zone for no reason).
3 in a row; 5 of 6 – it feels good. Bring on those Bruins!
