New Jersey Devils vs. Boston Bruins - Gamethread #46
Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils, Jan 19, 2012 7:00 PM EST
The Time: 7:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast: TV - MSG+; Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Game: The New Jersey Devils (26-17-2) vs. the Boston Bruins (29-13-1)
The Previews: My preview from way earlier this morning is right here. For an opposition point of view, Stanley Cup of Chowder has this short preview.
A Song for Tonight: It's time for some somewhat-sludgy, angry, raspy-vocals-yelling-their-lungs-out hardcore. This is "Blinders" by Rorschach. I expect tonight's game to be as grinding and loud as this song.
Gameday Info: Tom Gulitti reported this morning that Adam Henrique will play tonight. Yay. He'll center Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise. In that same report, Mattias Tedenby and Eric Boulton will be scratched. Boo and whatever, respectively. As for the Bruins, they'll get Brad Marchand and Rich Peverley back in the lineup as expected. Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe confirmed that in this article previewing tonight's game.
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

TG’s newest post here says Lou is thinking about sending Tedenby to Albany, considering Lou usually doesn’t say anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if the demotion came very soon.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
I dont need any nhl 12 codes, I’m too good already.
But I do agree with sending Tedenby to albany, he hasn’t done much this season.

I’ll look terrible if Tedenby is sent down, I just predicted today a great turnaround coming pretty soon for him.

It’s excellent news if you’re a Bruins fan. Tallinder is a part of the team’s defensive core. Taking up his minutes isn’t easy. Especially tonight given how deep the Bruins are at forward.

I’m most certainly not a Bruins fan, but to me Tallinder hasn’t showed himself to be anything special since he came here. I don’t think Taormina is any more of a defensive liability than Tallinder, yet Taormina’s offensive upside is miles more advanced. So tonight, in my opinion, I’ll take Taormina over Tallinder with a side of Zharkov over anyone on our 4th line please.

Not in my eyes. What type of physicality have you seen out of Tallinder that makes you feel having him in the lineup is more intimidating than dressing Bambi for a game? I’ll take my chances with Taormina..
Deadspin
The NJ Devils -- Jersey's Team
Dude, Taormina’s going to get manhandled if he sees Lucic. Like he’s just going to get flattened like Wile E Coyote after he gets an anvil dropped on his head.
At Least Tallinder’s big, he’s not going to throw the body but he’ll put up more of a challenge against the Bruins because he has size.

by Kevin Sellathamby on Jan 19, 2012 7:02 PM EST up reply actions
So what are you saying then, Taormina is useless against teams that have big players? Why is he in the NHL then, and why is he on our team?
I think this is a completely moot point and is unfair to Taormina. How many NHL players wouldn’t be manhandled by Lucic? I seem to remember a video of Lucic tossing around 3 different Buffalo Sabres, all bigger than Taormina, at the same time after he barreled over Ryan Miller.
The point is there’s plenty of small players who are successful in the NHL, and Milan Lucic will manhandle players regardless of their size.

Tallinder has experience and success against all kinds of forwards. Taormina, not so much.

I think the point he is trying to make is that not only is Taormina small, but he resembles a macaroni strainer that’s been peppered by a machine gun when it comes to defense.

I know I’m lone in this, but can we please get Clarkson off the power play. He’s dead weight, he makes very poor choices when carrying the puck, and more than half the time incorrectly reads the momentum of his teammates playmaking decisions resulting in nothing. NOTHING. His goals come from bad shots, or easy deflections. He is not a contributor but a liability. Anyone else in his position I would be happy with.
By “NOTHING” do you mean going to the spot that no one else wants to go to and cleaning up the garbage? Cause that is kind of important.

clarkson is not a skill player who relies on talent. He is also not even a Hartnell. Clarkson’s goals this year are … a combination of luck (SEVERE LUCK) and being on top lines and the power play unit. If you suddenly think this year he’s come into his own, while approaching his career high, I would disagree with you vehemently.
So you say he’s scoring goals BECAUSE of the powerplay, yet you want him OFF the powerplay?
by rtrstevec on Jan 19, 2012 7:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Clarkson definitely needs to be taken off the PP.
How quickly Devils fans forget, but the crease is PARISE’S office.
Where has he been this year? Not around the crease, that’s for sure. I wonder how much it has to do with this being a contract year?

Devils with a great period offensively. For the first 10-13 minutes or so it seemed like we were dominating the possession game and had a lot of chances and cycling in their zone. Unfortunately, it obviously didn’t translate into a goal. The period got more even, maybe slightly even favoring the Bruins, throughout the last 7-10 minutes. Devs with some nice chances at the end, but again the score still remains 0-0.

Well, it can be difficult to tell if the handful of most vocal pro-Hedberg bloggers are multiple people, or one person posting under multiple handles. I’ll err on the side of caution and assume it’s multiple people who have a vested interest in Hedberg being the starting goalie and Marty being put out to pasture and/or put down.
Certainly is starting to look that way. They just have to remember to give him some rest soon so he doesn’t have a bad game due to fatigue and lose all this momentum.

Not to sound like an idiot, but I kinda blame this loss on none other than LL. Deboer made some mistakes too, but once again, Boston’s bottom 6 beat our bottom six to a pulp goal wise, because you know, Zharkov is worse than Jansenn, since we have all heard that we put the best players on the ice, right.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
Bad bad news
Tallinder could be lost for the rest of the season. His problem is caused by a blood clot, a potentially serious condition.
Lamoriello: "Henrik Tallinder has been diagnosed with acute thrombophlebitis of the lower left leg and will be out six to eight weeks."
Per Rich Chere
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

good
he wasn’t playing well – and i saw a lot of boneheaded mistakes from a supposed veteran who gets tons of minutes – i’ll take the other d excluding foster who’s just a load on the ice – his supposed offensive upside does not outweigh his defensive ineptitude -
i’m happy to roll 3 lines, have 7 d (play foster on power play only if it all)- and insert the 2 forwards as needed, and double shift parise, kovalchuk, elias, or whoever has the hot hand.
Good?
The guy could have serious issues and you’re happy? This isn’t a healthy scratch situation where he’s getting benched to think about his play.
Even though acute thrombophlebitis is generally treatable, depending on the vein that is affected it can be more serious and even deep vein thrombophlebitis can lead to complications including dislodged clots causing strokes/death. We don’t really really any specific details, but he fact that its serious enough for Lou to issue a press release tonight and give a 6-8 week time-frame is troubling. Its not always about putting their play under a microscope and frankly this post is infuriating to me.
Happy about a guy getting hurt? Don’t know how you sleep at night.
Also, if you subtract Foster and Tallinder – who gets called up that will replace/play better than them?
