1/23/2011 New Jersey Devils Prospect Update: Wedgewood, Merrill, Sova and More
Its prospect update time! In addition to the statistical updates, after the jump we'll look at some of the more important news for Devils prospects.
Wedgewood Shines: After his stint as the goaltender for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships, Scott 'Money' Wedgewood has played terrifically since his return to the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. He has gone 4-1, 1.92 goals against average and a .963 save percentage. He has raised his overall save percentage to .916, good for 7th overall in the OHL and lowered his goals against average to 2.71, good for 10th overall in the OHL. He's also 6th in total wins and 4th in shutouts.
I selfishly hope that Wedgewood's Whaler team is eliminated from the OHL playoffs early so that he can get some starts at the AHL level under his belt.
Merrill has some positive press: There was a barrageof Jon Merrill articles last week. This one from Dave Starman over at USCHO.com has some must read quotes from Merrill on his return from suspension and the other, featured on NHL.com quotes Ohio State men's hockey coach Marc Osiecki (he himself known as a defensive guru of sorts) calling Merrill the best defenseman in the NCAA.
I have two quick notes about the articles. Starman's article claims 'Merrill wasn't suspended at Michigan' when he went to play at the World Junior Championships. Yes he was. It was an indefinite suspension as confirmed by Red Berenson here when he was reinstated. And regarding Osiecki's quote? I am inclined to think Justin Schultz of Wisconsin is the best defenseman in the NCAA.
Albany fighting for first: Albany is currently in 4th place in the AHL Northeast Division with 44 points. However they are only two points behind division leading Connecticut Whale (home of Sean Avery, Wade Redden and future home of Brad Richards) with a game at hand.
Stupid Demotions: To help make a push for a divisional lead, Albany added some offense to their team with the arrivals of Mattias Tedenby and Steve Zalewski after both players were demoted this past weekend.
Zalewski played well in his time in New Jersey and if this demotion is indefinite, I have to question the thinking of Pete DeBoer and Lou Lamoriello on the structure of the 4th line. If the goal of the 4th line is to try and generate offense and more importantly NOT get scored upon, why are Brad Mills, Cam Janssen, Ryan Carter and others around? If you have a poor defense that has trouble getting the puck out of their own end, wouldn't you want a player like Zalewski who was very good at helping carry out the puck to the neutral zone?
I am not sure how I feel about the Tedenby demotion. On one hand he wasn't getting enough ice-time and at times would make bad decisions that would hurt the team defensively. On the other hand, he played adequate enough for Jacques Lemaire last year to receive sufficient ice-time, wasn't exactly playing with good playmaking forwards, and likely played with fear of being benched for every little mistake he made. It would also have been nice for him to get some time to play with Jacob Josefson. Although it's probably best for Tedenby to get some consistent ice-time in Albany, I can't shake the feeling that he didn't get a fair shake this year.
Best of Luck, Joe Sova: Sova, along with the Devils 4th round pick in 2012 (they will still retain the 4th round pick they received from Toronto in the David Steckel trade) was traded to Carolina for LW Alexei Ponikarovsky. Sova, signed out of Alaska-Anchorage last season, plays a good offensive game while still working on his defensive skills in both the ECHL/AHL this year. Sova average 0.28 PPG during his time in the AHL after posting 0.50 PPG at the NCAA level. He was a victim of a numbers game early on this year that saw him sent to the ECHL because the Devils felt the need to have both Jay Leach and Peter Harrold on the AHL roster along with players like Mark Fraser on the NHL roster.
That said, I am pleasantly surprised the Devils only had to give up a 4th round pick and a player for Ponikarovsky. Despite only having 15 goals in his last 127 NHL games and whose best attribute seems to be the ability to almost score/fire the puck directly at the goalie's chest, trade deadline history gives you the impression that Poni might have fetched a 2nd round pick for Carolina as the deadline approached. While I think Sova had potential, I can understand that there were a number of prospects ahead of him on the depth chart and it's probably better for him to get a better look somewhere else.
With the departure of Sova to the Carolina organization and Peter Harrold to the NHL club, it's likely you will see defenseman Harry Young be recalled to Albany from the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. If that happens the Devils will not have any player who is signed to a SPC in any other places but Newark and Albany.
That's it for this week, please leave any prospect related questions or comments below. Thanks for reading and sound off below!

“The need to have Jay Leach and Peter Harrold on the roster” – yes, these are players that can play solid AHL hockey. I never understand why prospect people have to question the need to have actually capable players on an AHL roster. How about questioning why Joe Sova couldn’t beat out Dan Kelly?
I liked Zalewski too but it’s clear they have other ideas for the 4th line right now, so sending him down is the right move.

That’s a factual statement. The Devils felt the need to have both on the roster, too many players and Sova had to go to the ECHL. Where am I saying that the team shouldn’t have capable AHL players?
I would love to know what the plans are for the fourth line right now. The Janssen signing/subsequent hold onto a roster spot baffles me every day. Especially with PDB and LL saying they need more from the bottom 6. I just really don’t understand.

“felt the need” is a phrase dripping with sarcasm; it implies capriciousness. If you’d said the Devils decided to add more veteran help or the like, I’d believe that you meant that statement sincerely.
Janssen will be bounced gently out of the rotation once rosters expand. For now, I think they value his locker room contributions. I’m hoping to see Zharkov back before the deadline. I don’t think they can really acquire a player for the 4th line to help the team out, unfortunately – there’s just not many guys available.

Fantastic. So in addition to once calling me ignorant, you add liar and insincere to the bucket. Anything else you would like to add? Get it all out…I know you want to.

Do I have to go back on twitter or here to show where you said that you hated the Peter Harrold signing and having too many defensemen in the AHL? It might’ve been John who was more adamant about not liking that move, so I could be misremembering. I’m not calling you a liar at all – just saying that your statement has an implication that someone else also agreed with, and given (my memory of) your judgement of those moves before, I don’t think I was at all wrong to read it that way. If you didn’t mean it that way, that’s fine, but I’d suggest not using ‘felt the need’ in that context when you’re expressing factual statements.
We have different opinions on things – I don’t think that’s really cause for enmity. You know that I enjoy this column and your take on things, even if I don’t always agree with it, maybe especially because I don’t always agree with it.

Fair enough.
To your point though, I dont really ‘think’ about what I tweet. (I don’t really hate the NY Giants). But to that end perhaps I should be more careful in how those tweets might be perceived here.
But if I did mean what you thought I meant why wouldn’t I just own it?
Of course I made fun of the Harrold call up yesterday, but it’s in good fun. I honestly don’t remember my thoughts on Harrold. But considering the date of the signing, I can’t imagine I said or wrote anything about it.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

I remember not caring all that much about the Harrold move and not being surprised he was cut from camp. I figured he was a #7 anyway, so whatevs.

Also, I can’t believe that people are claiming Tedenby didn’t get a fair shake. He played nearly 50 games here. He’d have his good games here and there, maybe draw a penalty, but that is certainly not enough on the 3rd line of a playoff team.

I see both sides of it, on Tedenby.
I just saw (at least in the last few weeks) a player who really couldn’t do anything to get out of the PDB dog house. After Lemaire came back he played in 37 games, scored 13 points and had a +7 rating (sorry BTN is considered a gambling site, so therefore blocked at work). I thought he turned a corner at the end of last year. I don’t hate him getting AHL time, but thought PDB used him as a scapegoat at times.

Something he could’ve done to get out would be to start scoring goals. In addition, Tedenby ended last season without scoring much – 1 goal in 26 games to end the season. We all know Tedenby’s defense isn’t very good – he’s got to be scoring goals to justify his place in the lineup, or at least making things happen. There wasn’t enough of that.
I wouldn’t be that surprised if Tedenby came back next year and scored 15-20 goals, if he bulks up a bit and works on his skating and shot.

Skating? Tedenby is one of the smoothest skaters on the team, regardless, I guarantee if Tedenby hadn’t played on a line with Clarkson and instead someone who shared the puck, he’d have at least 5 more goals.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
And I guarantee that Ponikarovsky will score more than 5 goals playing with Clarkson just down the stretch.
How many breakaways did Tedenby have? Tedenby is a great skater in short bursts, he’s excellent moving side to side, but he doesn’t seem to possess top speed. I’d like to see him get faster.

I don’t know about that, seeing Tedenby live, I could swear he was one of the fastest skaters out there, but speed doesn’t correct bad positioning, which is why he’s lost in the offensive zone and Defensive zone. And Poni might get more than 5 with Clarkson, but him and Tedenby are completely different players. A line of Tedenby Josefson and Zharkov will have Teddy scoring 15 or more a year for sure.
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
This is very true. Plus he could use the time in the AHL to get stronger. That might help a bit.

Everyone has more goals than Scott Gomez

Indeed. He’s got quickness but in terms of blazing speed, he could use work in that department. He also needs to be more aggressive when he does have the puck. Not that he should follow Clarkson’s example, but an offensive player should aim for more than just averaging a shot per game.
Also: Ponikarovsky is one step closer to that 5 goal mark in his first game. :)

I like Tedenby but no one can seriously suggest that he didn’t get a fair shake. The guy scored one goal in like his last 50 games. For someone with his skill, and with the moves and puck acumen he showed at times last season, that’s not acceptable. His confidence was shot and in no way did he deserve time ahead of superior players in the top six.
Let him get his confidence back in Albany and come back blazing later this season or next.
