Yay, anothe rarticle citing the Post as primary source. At least they had the stones to say it in the opening paragraph.

For sure, Zach is gone, probably for a 2nd and a 5th

I’m not going to lie to you. It felt good and I’m going to do whatever is in my power possible to stay there as long as I can. - Petr Sykora on playing on a line with Elias and Parise.

And I must respectfully decline to agree with Coach Pete.

The Devils are a team with a handful of elite players whose talents are augmented by efficient roster players and a lot of inexperience. In addition to the veteran goaltenders becoming consistantly solid and the efficient roster players not losing games, more than one of the inexperienced guys are going to have to have break-out second half for this team to be mentioned in comparison to other “elite” teams.

But, he’s the Coach, what’s he gonna say? “Gee ya know, we’re just sorta average at best, what with all the injuries and rookies ’round here.”

Agreed. PDB has to say this, because the Devils are a team that needs to have confidence in their ability to overachieve, and PDB has to help build that confidence.

Giving up on Parise & saving money vs. additional revenue from playoff games. Which is greater?

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

by Cherno77 on Jan 24, 2012 9:54 AM EST reply actions

Additional revenue from playoff games has to be greater. Other than games when we play the Rangers and Flyers, playoff games are about the only other time you see the Rock completely full for the most part. Playoffs make the fans happy and makes them want to get involved, and we need the fans to show up and support the team.

Getting rid of Parise will just irk most of those fans in the long run which in turn will probably have an impact on the amount who show up to the games. The Devils need to do everything in their power to make fans show up to the games instead of just watching from home.

by DevsFan520 on Jan 24, 2012 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

If you trade Parise for draft picks right now, you’ll save almost $2.5 million in salary over the remainder of the season. If you make the playoffs, you get a minimum of two home games (likely sellouts) at an increased price per ticket…. and depending on how the particular contracts are written, I wouldn’t be shocked if the franchise also gets a cut of concessions sales from all those fans attending a playoff game.

The financial risk, of course, is that the team keeps Parise and then misses the playoffs. But if that were the foremost concern among ownership and that was going to drive the decision-making, this would be a very different team. Not only would you trade Parise, but you’d trade a bunch of other guys for picks/prospects to bring the team’s payroll down to the League minimum. You also wouldn’t have seen a deal such as the one that brought Alex Ponikarovsky to town last weekend — after all, that one increased the payroll too.

Wow Tim Thomas not going to the white house is really lame and bitter. Its not about what political party you associate yourself with, its about being represented as the best team in the country and acknowledgement from the president. Could you imagine how many Devils didn’t approve of Bush in 03’ but they went as it is a sign of mutual respect. Another reason “#30” will NEVER BE #30

It’s not wrong necessarily, I think what Thomas did was his own choice, and he shouldn’t be judged by it. He didn’t randomly state he doesn’t want to go because of politics, rather he said this months ago and decided that he will make a point by not going. You shouldn’t judge Thomas by his views and how strongly he believes in them.

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

Theres a diference in standing for what you believe in and being disrespectful. I find it disrespectful and I’m not a fan of this president either.

It’s not really all that disrespectful though, the country comes before hockey, even for these professionals, and he thought that he could obviously send that message by not going.

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

by KovyisLove on Jan 24, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

yes country comes before hockey and he’s an American, and the message I get is that he’s unpatriotic

"Its the letter D"

by Rory B. Bellows on Jan 24, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

The message is that he is patriotic, and that the decisions the President makes is more important than his speech about his hockey club winning the cup.

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

by KovyisLove on Jan 24, 2012 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

I suppose it wasn’t disrespectful when celebrities from other industries made comments equally as disparaging towards this President’s predecessor in equally public forums? Or when those same celebrity-types went out of their way to avoid this President’s predecessor?

I applaud Tim Thomas for standing up and expressing his beliefs. That’s what America is supposed to be about, right? Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of association? Or does that only count when one is speaking and expressing what the ruling class finds appropriate?

by acasser on Jan 24, 2012 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

But don’t those who aren’t Thomas have the freedom to express their displeasure with what he did? Or is it what you said but in the other way?

There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

I would hope that anyone on the Bruins’ roster who felt the way Thomas did and felt about it as strongly as Tim Thomas did would have done the same thing.

Of course, had someone who was merely roster filler pulled the same “stunt”, it wouldn’t be the story that it became.

Aside from the regurgitation of 2 month-old information, the completely logical and expected opinion of Zach, contract term and value speculation, and inaccuracies when it comes to the Devs ability to sign him after July 1, I thought it was a quality article.

In all fairness, Jamie Langenbrunner wasn’t captain of the Devils when he got traded. He left for the S.S. Getoffmylawn

How To Solve The Financial Dilemna?

Assuming the reports are correct and we’re going to lose $20 million this year, I’m not sure how you get out of that hole.

Our current average crowd is 15,164, leaving 2,461 seats available per game. I’m guessing that the avg price of these tickets is between $30 and $40. Selling those seats brings in between $3 and $4 million over the course of the season.

Even if the avg value is $100, that only brings in $10 million. We’d still only be half way there. I know you need to add concessions, parking, etc., but if $20 million is correct, we’ve got big problems.

by HouseRich on Jan 24, 2012 1:32 PM EST reply actions

It goes both ways, if the Devils get into the finals and play 10 home games, that’s at least 10 million dollars more, obviously not likely, but it’s not bad. As soon as they sell the other 49% that Chambers sold, we should be good.

And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?

by KovyisLove on Jan 24, 2012 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Why do our own fans take the NY Post reports as gospel?

It is really starting to irk me that everywhere I turn our fans take their word as gospel.
No offense, but I don’t buy that they are losing 20 million this season and if the reports are talking strictly about the team or the DAE.

Yeah, the average price of the tickets is higher than $40.

The best thing we can do as fans and I have posted this here a few times already, is to try to go to more games, as many as we can with regards to each own’s financial situation.
We can all lay off some coffee and Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, cut down on smokes, go out for lunch a few less times and save up and buy tickets with the various promos that are available for most games.

It may seem like small potatoes but if everyone attended let’s say 3 more games than usual per season, it would add up and boost the Devils revenues and also enhance the atmosphere inside The Rock.

I loathe the Flyers and their fans as much as anyone, but for anyone that was at Saturday’s game had to notice thousands of them that showed up despite the foul weather.
One of them told me on the carvel line that with such a beautiful arena and a team that has has so much success, he said it surprises him that we don’t fill up the barn every night. He was not trolling either nor part of the problem as he’s from Deleware.

I should have added that the $20 million seemed like an exaggeration, my fault.

Cash Flow issue, not a business/market issue

The Financial situation is because we have a minority owner who does not want to invest in the team and a majority owner who is over leveraged. The debt is the issue. From a business stand point, moving the team would not solve this issue, in fact control of the arena is very lucrative. Essentially, the debt needs to be refinanced under better terms with a new owner infusing capital into the business entity (I hate to say team since they also control the arena). Anyway, it is fun to listen to the MSM dolts who equate cash flow problems to having to leave a market.

but i am too scary about devils bankruptcy and i think that we will move to canda…i am diehard devils fan but too pesimistic

by kiki30 on Jan 24, 2012 2:01 PM EST reply actions

The team isn’t going to be moved to canada, thats more likely to happen to phoenix then to us. The devils have a rich history and have accomplished too much in the league just to be shipped off to a city that has already lost a team.

The NHL wants to expand to new markets. I think I saw it in the NY Post, so it must be true!
