Will Devils and Prudential Center get an All-Star Game?
There's only one more game (tonight) until the All-Star break. The four-day event which contains a draft, a skills competition, and an exhibition is in Ottawa this year. No Devils will be there, as Adam Larrson and Adam Henrique will opt out due to minor injuries. This will be the Senators first time hosting the event. They get to remove themselves from a group of cities and teams that have yet to host NHL's second biggest regular season event (the Winter Classic being the other).
The Devils had the luxury of hosting an All-Star Game in 1984, only a couple years after their move to New Jersey. Two Devils were apart of that (defender Joe Cirella and Glen "Chico" Resch who we are all aware of). Here's the introduction of the Wales Conference. What I hate about this video is the announcer's tone when introducing Ranger players as it was held at the World's Most Overrated Arena which happens to contain asbestos. The two Devils heard cheers and boos as well.
Now, the Devils are in a new home. A home in the middle of it's 5th year of operation. Newark, NJ joins the list of six cities yet to hold the event. The Prudential Center joins of a longer list of new arenas yet to hold one. Only seven NHL arenas have opened since 2000. Of those seven arenas, only the Wild and Stars have held All-Star games. Will Newark get one? Will the Devils host one soon?
My guess is yes, but not for a few more years. With Pittsburgh's new arena and the Garden being renovated, these will most likely be on top of the NHL's list. They have not announced last year's yet, though rumors are it may be in Columbus or Anaheim. I remember hearing Devils Chairmen Jeff Vanderbeek mention during one of his Jersey Tours a couple summers back that the organization will apply to one. I don't know if they have or if they haven't.
I think the organization should get on this in the next few years. Why? Well a couple of reasons.
One is the exposure. It's already a top selling arena in the world. But more is always better. It would help local exposure in hockey as well. Fans from around North America would see the jerseys of all teams across the state. The local media would hopefully ride this and give exposure to the Devils.
Another is finances. A four day event can bring in some "mula". It could also increase season tickets sales (since it may be the only way to get tickets to the All-Sat game at a reasonable price). That would surely help the Devils finances problems if they are grave as the rumors (and they are rumors) suggest.
The City of Newark has been under a reconstruction itself. It's no longer the crime infested city in a toxic state. Laugh all you will outsiders, but I walk my 3 blocks from the light rail station to my car after every game at 10 p.m. every Devils home game. The restaurants around the arena are fun, the Gateway Center also has some quick bites, and transportation is never an issue. The biggest is the new Courtyard Marriott being built right next to the Rock.
I feel once the hotel is finished, and few more pre/post game spots open, the area around the arena will be ready for prime time.
So I ask you. Will the Devils get an All-Star Game soon? What do they need to do to get one? What does the Newark area need to do? In lieu of the weekend break coming up - I ask you: What do you think?

My concern is that no matter how hard Mayor Booker works to improve the city’s reputation, it will still be a permeating factor in these decisions. The NHL can’t afford any sort of negative publicity, least of all the sort of violent crimes that Newark has been known for in the past.
If we had built the brand new arena in the Meadowlands I’m certain we would have been awarded an ASG there, but that wouldn’t have worked out anyways.

NCAA had the Elite 8 here ths past Spring
That is much more visable and draws many more people than a NHL all star game.
The NCAA publically stated afterwards that they were extremely pleased with everything and would come back.
So NY, Philly, Detroit, Chicago, LA should never host an all star game because they are known to have violent crime and gangs?
Everyone knows the surrounding area has been more than fine, I would say fun and very safe.
Bettman attends a lot of games here, one of his nephew’s is a Devils fan that lives in NJ.
He knows it’s safe and a great arena.
Once the two new hotels go up it would give us a better chance to get the game.
And yes it would be a nice financial boost to Newark’s economy and to Devils ownership.
Git er done!

I understand that Newark is not the city its reputation would have people believe. However, that is still the perception. Perhaps the NCAA will help change that, I hope it does.

I don’t see the NHL (hotel or not) looking to have a All-Star Game here. They should lobby for the draft first.

We totally deserve an All Star game, it will help the devils and the city of newark financially. Not to mention everyone that visits the rock always says its one of the nicest arenas they’ve ever been in.
Although I could do without those people trying to silicate those vacation scams while I’m walking around in there.

Everyone who’s been to a game at the Rock knows why the NHL should have an All-Star game there: it’s a fantastic arena, the area is fine, the access to transportation is good, the local eateries and bars are excellent. There is only one problem: the word “Newark”. You can argue logic about the perception of the level of crime in Newark versus any other major city where an ASG could be held, but people hear Newark and the first thing that comes to their mind is, well, epitomized by that moronic comment that Barry Melrose made shortly after the Rock opened: “It looks great on the inside, but don’t go outside, especially if you got a wallet or anything else, because the area around the building is awful.”
There are less of those people now
Once someone actually goes to The Rock they learn themselves that it’s truly a great place to catch a game or show.
The key is to bring people that are hesitant with you and show them the ropes, it always works out well.
Virtually all honest reviews you see online are really positive, look at the review on Ticketmaster left by opposing fans, they love The Rock!

And if the NHL gives them an ASG – that number will decrease. The thought process becomes – “wow the NHL agreed to have ones of it’s marquee events in Newark…I guess it’s a great place/great area”

Totally agree. Until recently, I was putting down $25 – $30 to park right outside because I didn’t want to walk a few blocks with my three kids. I now park by the courthouse and always stop by Mulberry Pizza. We eat like kings for $30.
I think the city has done a great job improving the area. An ASG would be awesome!
All- Star game?
The Devils can’t even get any of their players on the team! Parise, Elias or Kovalchuk are not good enough? You will see the All-Star(less) game in some cities twice before you ever see it in New Jersey. I think not sending Larsson and Henrique is a boycott to Bettman and the NHL. I sure hope it is.
What does having All-Stars have to do with hosting the game?

They need to work on attendence for they’re own games. Its embarassing seeing all the empty seats at the games. Its brutal! Sure the all star game would sellout but I’m sure the nhl would bother with a team that can only half fill they’re arena every game. Attendence needs to be addressed.

Thrashers, Stars and Hurricanes hosted one
all had/have empty seats. Attendance will be addressed when the Devils a)start to become an elite team again and b)they are more marketable with fair ticket prices for the product.
Not sure how 15k is half filled in an arena that holds 17,625
Of course we’d all like to see more fans at games, how many games do you attend per season?

right 15k a game! your being a little genorous there. Maybe to see theRangers, or Flyers, and half the fans are their own fans. I’ve been at my fair share games to realize that your exagerating. All that I’m saying is that fans need to start filling the seats for the league to realize that this is a great hockey market. Plus,I still see some unsightly run down old buildings that should be knocked down around the Rock. Not something tourists like to see.
I like that Lou put the new arena in Newark, because it’s regenating a old and very historic city. I hope that it keeps trending that way for the city.
It’s not an exaggeration. The Devils have averaged 15,101 in their 23 home games thus far.
Your point about attendance remains, but the only exaggeration is in saying that 87.5% capacity is “half-full.”
There have been 11 games over 15,000. Six games were in the 14,000-14,999 range. There were two games with 14,952 and 14,941 attendance.

Which light rail station?
And I heard VBK and Bettman agree they shouldn’t get one until the area is fully developed. A Courtyard and Indigo won’t cut it. They need a 4+ star hotel like a Crowne Plaza, Omni, etc. and it needs to be somewhere on or near Mulberry St. Keep in mind Verizon Center STILL hasn’t gotten one yet and a few others older than the Rock.
Warren St. It’s safe becuase it’s surrounded by NJIT, Rutgers-Newark (about 5 different police stations cover the area). But there’s been a few occasions where I was the only one getting off and not a cop in sight was around during my walk.

I park on or around Bruen St. (the other side of Rt 21, where Hells Kitchen is) every game. I’ve never had a problem. Anywhere in walking distance of the arena is well lit, and there’s usually people around. I don’t know if I’d recommend hanging around there on non-game nights, but thats only because I’ve never hung around there on non-game nights. I did park there for the Viewing Party at Edison Ale House earlier in the season, and as usual had no issue.
As for the improved area, I can honestly say I was never in Downtown Newark before the Rock, but just in the last few years the options have greatly increased. I went from hanging at Hell Kitchen, to the Arena, to Brick City before games. Now I’m at Loft 47 before every game. I still haven’t tried Uber Burger, but definitely want to.
As for Mulberry Pizza, I’ll definitely add that to the list now. And once that Mariott opens up, I’ll be excited for the next Friday night, Saturday afternoon back 2 back on the sched.
No area is perfect. Especially not the areas that Stadiums and Arenas tend to be built in. But being a Yankee fan as well, I can say that I much prefer the surrounding area of the Rock to Yankee Stadium.
I’m more than happy to be in Downtown Newark 44 or hopefully more times a year…….
na-na-na-na HEY! You SUCK!!
How is the food at Loft 47?
I am going to explore the Ironbound more often this season.
It’s so close to The Rock, I sometimes forget that.

Dunno.
The arena seems well-placed because it’s equidistant to many hockey fan basesof the past 30 years: Boston, Hartford, HockeyEast & ECAC, Rangers, Flyers, Isles, Capitals, and even Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Southern Ontario and Quebec are within driving distance ad well. And then there are the transplants who now live in New York: a few thousand from everywhere… and hundreds more who’d use the pretext of the ASG to spend some tourism dollars around here.
Sure, the local Devils fanbase is too watered-down amid a busy sports marketplace, but it’s still an impassioned bunch.
All-in-all, I think the Devils will get the ASG within 2-3 years. Next year, Columbus. Hmm. I bet that’ll be as good for Big10 hockey as it will be for Columbus.
