New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers - Gamethread #49
New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils, Jan 31, 2012 7:00 PM EST
The Time: 7:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast: TV - MSG+; Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Game: The New Jersey Devils (26-19-3) vs. the New York Rangers (31-12-4)
The Previews: My preview from way, way earlier this morning is right here. As for the opposition point of view, over at Blueshirt Banter, Joe Fortunato has called this game a "must win" and Bryan Winters has keys to the game.
A Song for Tonight: With three straight losses, or non-wins to be precise, and only one goal scored in each game, the Devils are in some kind of funk. What's the solution for funk? The Funk. Thankfully, Plainfield's own George Clinton has given the world all kinds of it. Here's one of his more legendary songs with Parliament: "Flashlight" originally from the 1978 album "Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome." The song became a #1 single back then and features Bernie Worrell making the most out of his synthesizers. At least if the Devils aren't winning, there's a reason to groove.
Gameday Info: The New Jersey Devils will welcome Andy Greene and Brad Mills back into the lineup along with debuting Steve Bernier. Tom Gulitti reported earlier today that the defenseman and fourth liner will return from injury and the right winger will play on the third line tonight. Matt Taormina and Cam Janssen will be scratched to make room for Greene and Mills. Gulitti also reported that Martin Biron will start for the Rangers tonight. That's right, Henrik Lundqvist isn't starting. Biron's numbers are still high and unsustainable, so the challenge remains. Andrew Gross has the projected lines and pairings for the Rangers in this post at Ranger Rants. If there's a particular pairing I'd like to see the Devils pick on, then it is Michael Del Zotto and Anton Stralman just at a first glance. They're not good defensively; besides, Stralman couldn't make the Devils in camp for a reason.
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss tonight's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Every game.
Every game has equal weight, though they are not of equal importance. To me, this is a make-or-break game (even though it is not).
Coming off a long break. At home. Against the rival. Who leads the conference. To start the second-half/ down the stretch (technically 2+ full months) before the second-season.
I’m going to go take my pulse. I’m just so excited. And I can’t hide it.

On a serious note- I hate these games. Either i’m incredibly smug or i’m incredibly ragey. And considering how this season’s gone, it seems like the latter will happen.

Im starting to get seriously sick of these tuesday/thursday night Devils games. I have Bio lecture and Im tired of not being able to watch them. Atleast I can follow on here.
That happened to me last year
Had Bio and Chem lab 6-9 and got sick of it (especially when the Jets played on Monday night), so I made sure all of my engineering labs were in the afternoon this semester.
Yeah, I am a biology major so I like this class, but this particular class was only offered 7-10 tuesday/thursday

Here’s to hoping for another good game between us. May the best team win.
I know you all must be upset Lundqvist isn’t playing tonight also.

foster
needs to sit and become the puck/water boy – he’s just not worth being on the ice for us – tao – is more creative offensively, and decent defensively despite his size. Foster is a big oaf, who’s offensive “talent” is far outweighed by his buffonery
Hopefully when Hank gets back that’s what happens. Or if PDB really wants to keep him around, put him on the 4th line as a winger so they can use him on the PP

we don't look
good again, in our own defensive zone, foster, sykora, man we look like headless chickens when things don’t go smooth in our defensive zone, where’s niedermayer when you need ‘em – we have no defensive leadership? that’s our problem, that and we don’t hold onto the puck long enough, we can make the telegraphed pass most of the time – and the other team’s D picks up on it – they anticipate our foregone conclusion of where we’re going next with puck – we need to hold on to it more than just getting rid of it so quickly esp in the offensive zone – don’t do the expected thing – we’ve had flashes of it, but not enough – the rangers remind me of us when we used to dominate them – you know they’re going to score and win no matter how hard we forecheck/skate/play our hearts out – Deboer is not a good coach esp with the talent we have -
i dont see how sykora gets defensive blame but yes the defense sucks

There are four (4) specific conditions that must be met in order for
the Referee to award a penalty shot for a player being fouled from
behind. They are:
(i) The infraction must have taken place in the neutral zone or attacking
zone, (i.e. over the puck carrier’s own blue line);
(ii) The infraction must have been committed from behind;
(iii) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the
Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the
puck) must have been denied a reasonable chance to score (the fact
that he got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from
the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the foul was from behind and
he was denied a "more" reasonable scoring opportunity due to the
foul, then the penalty shot should be awarded);
(iv) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the
Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the
puck) must have had no opposing player between himself and the
goalkeeper.
(i) True
(ii) True
(iii) True (no shot was taken)
(iv) True (clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) He had control until he was interfered with.

If you can successfully get the pass off on a 2-on-1, it’s the higher percentage play. The goalie has to commit to the puck carrier in that situation, meaning the other guy usually has a very good chance of finding the back of the net if he can get the biscuit.
A lot of players try to force that pass, even if they’re the better shooter/scorer among the two. Lousy players can hit an open net, but even the best players have trouble getting one through the goalie 1-on-1.
Kovy probably should have shot in that situation…. but I can’t fault him for trying to hit Parise for the one-timer/re-direction.
The target practice or speed skating event?

Ilya – Zach – Patty time

Kovy learned from the earlier breakaway that was thwarted. This time he took the five hole and made the Rangers pay.
Agreed. His hands are too fast to rely on dekes and the like. I was hoping he’d snap a snipe on the breakaway.

I gotta be honest
I doubted pretty hard there after the MDZ goal.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
Those offensive dynamos – Stralman, Boyle, and Delzo. Those goals had me shaking my head.

Thank Marty for this win, kiddies. While the third goal was certainly soft, Brodeur was responsible for the Devils being in this game for quite some time and he came up huge in the Skills Competition.
I feel like the Devils stole two points tonight. Maybe not so much to make it Grand Larceny, but it’s certainly Petty Larceny.
I agree. If Clarkson didn’t score that goal late the Devils wouldn’t have come out with 2 points, or even one point.

So you're saying Marty isn't finished?
His .885 SV% in this game begs to differ.

Its how the game is played. Eat your crow.
by Chris Calabrese on Jan 31, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions
yeah whatever. Ill eat this crow i keep hearing about, whatever that means. fact still remains, hes a poor skater, makes terrible choices, and scores these unbelievably lucky goals that people register as him being talented.
Wikipedia says… Eating crow is a U.S. colloquial idiom, meaning humiliation by admitting wrongness or having been proved wrong after taking a strong position.
He isnt super talented, that sir you are right about. But there are guys who make NHL careers doing what he does, picking up the trash. Thats 17 lucky/garbage/fluke goals that we wouldnt have if not for him.

A few goals are tuck-ins of other players’ shots. That’s true. But, right place-right time is a skill, right?

GREAT WIN!
No trash talk though, guys. It was a shootout.
"I'll drive the bus to make this team." - Petr Sykora, 2011
This was HUGE for us. The confidence that this can intstall in this team can be tremendous. I truly hope this leads to a long winning streak and a good run. similar to last year although i dont know if we can duplicate that. As long as we play well and win many games in a row and dont lose many in a row

Unfotunately I had to read the end on here
Fire alarm went off in my building and I missed the shootout. Good one tonight folks, hopefully the red tide keeps rolling along.
Loved the fight the Devils showed tonight. Kept battling and were finally rewarded with a nice bounce for an opportunity, and Clarky put it home. Yes, the goal given up immediately after Kovy scored was immensely frustrating, but you’d think the Devils we’re in 15th place by 10 points with the way people were talking. Glad the team shut the boo birds and negative Nancys up tonight.
Status quo.
While this game, even if lost wasnt the end of the world, that was not just frustrating rage quit worthy.
by Chris Calabrese on Jan 31, 2012 10:07 PM EST up reply actions
I totally get that
That would be a horrible ending and I’d be head-desking all the same as anyone else; it’s just the sweeping comments about how bad so-and-so is and how a team is going nowhere after one bad sequence that drive me crazy. It was a bad play, and would be an infuriating game, no doubt, but the generalizations anger me.
Status quo.
Great, emotionally and psychologically fulfilling 2 pts.
The goals against were awkward and, while not predictable, they were preventable and frustrating from both a defensive and goaltending standpoint.
Hopefully this game will put the wind at the Devils back and leave the Rangers’ sails empty for awhile.

Late battery dying pre recap comment
A Rangers fan said to me: better to be lucky than good. I said: story of the Rangers season.
Lucky? Sure. But they were lucky to get opportunities. They made the most of enough of them en route to victory. Welcome to sport.
Lastly: whooooooooooooo

i told every rangers fan near me tonight “congratulations on your 2nd good season in the last 100 years”
by JTdevs on Jan 31, 2012 10:13 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
That is a gross exaggeration. I think the Rangers had two Stanley Cups before the Second World War (20+ years), two or three finals appearances in the Original Six and expansion era (30+ years), and then 1994.
So, that’s at least 5-10 good years out of 85. Would a team that’s not from a major metropolitan area – or is a founding member (ahem… Boston, Chicago, Toronto…) – survive such mediocre results?
by Alan Wright on Jan 31, 2012 10:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
haha 5 / 85 then. listen, what u said is true. but, my comment wasnt an attempt to factually reconstuct the rangers culture of losing, just meant to get under their skin and it did. also, not 1 rags fan had half of what u just laid out there to say in response, and thats what i expected.
by JTdevs on Jan 31, 2012 10:41 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
Sorry, yeah, I agree with you on that. Good point about the culture of losing. I was trying to emphasize their shameful history: the history where their fathers and grandfathers allegedly became Rangers fans and passed it down to them.
Or, as I’ve seen in many cases in NJ, some people were just brainwashed by the falsifications about the 1994 Messier guarantees, the Messier hatty, etc. And in that 1994 time, their die was cast.

At one point during the game the idiot Rag fan in my row said they have the better Marty.
We yelled at for the next several minutes.
Even before we won in the shootout I was ready to say that was the game of the year.
For the team. For our fans. Everyone brought it tonight.
