I wish I could begin with some highlights but there really weren't any. The first period was looking to be fairly even until the Devils took to dumb penalties (too many men, closing hand on the puck) both resulting in quick goals for the Monarchs. From there it was pretty much all down hill.
Wearing the Captains C this season is Leach, with the assistants Henrique and Sistito. If the game was noteworthy it was for what did not happen. On the devils power play neither Henrique nor Larsson where on the starting unit. In fact they weren't even on the second unit! Considering their NHL experience their absence is very puzzling. The Power play by the way was its old anemic self. Most of the time they were lucky to set up yet alone get off a decent shot.
No single player distinguished themselves positively during the game. Kelly had a nice ten foot slide across the defensive zone to break up a play, but that was about it. I felt Kinkaid in goal was sporadic. The Devils lacked anyone showing the intensity of their former Captain Stephen Gionta.
I remain concerned regarding the abilities of our Swedish defensemen Urbom and Larsson. I've eaten Swedish meatballs tougher than these two. At 215, 6'5" and 205, 6'3" respectively you would think they would do something on the boards. Anything, other than a half hearted arm check. They were not paired together and it is no wonder. No forward needs to worry about a crunching body check or being driven into the boards by this pair. They are not going to fight anybody, but they need to. They never get angry. I'd fight them myself if I thought getting pummeled would help the Team. And this is what you say to a Swede to get them going; "din Mamma bar hockey skridskor". Chew on that for a while.
