New Jersey Devils vs. Florida Panthers - Gamethread #55

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils, Feb 11, 2012 1:00 PM EST

The Time: 1:00 PM EDT

The Broadcast: TV - MSG+2; Radio - 660 AM WFAN

The Game: The New Jersey Devils (31-19-4) vs. the Florida Panthers (25-17-11)

The Previews: My preview from far earlier this morning is right here. For an opposition's point of view, John Beatty has this preview over at Litter Box Cats.

A Song for Today: One Cool Guy was a staple of the late-1990s third-wave-ska boom here in this part of the country. A bunch of them joined up with Tomas Kalnoky to form Streetlight Manifesto after they broke up, if I recall correctly. This is one of their better cuts: "Best Intentions."

Gameday Info: There's not much this early in the morning, so keep on the lookout if Gulitti or Chere has something closer to gametime.

As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss today's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Do you like margaritaville? Well, Florida’s goalie likes it; Clemmemsen will get the start for the Panthers.

by NJGuy on Feb 11, 2012 1:50 PM EST reply actions

fayne

seems to be out of position a lot – take the man if you’re down that low, let the goalie see the shot, and make sure the stick of the guy you’re covering isn’t flapping around.

Another observation, florida’s forwards love to fly into the zone with speed but then pull up, and look for the late man – a lot of their scoring chances are off that kind of play – our D has to pull up to them, and not allow them to make that pass.

PS. bring urbom up

Somebody on here or Blueshirtbanter explained that MSG+2 has either different technology, bandwidth, or licenses from the FCC because it was purchased from another network and incorporated into the MSG family of networks.

So, that could be why it lacks HD.

There’s a reason why they’re commenters for the Panthers, and not a team that’s done something more than miss the playoffs 10 years in a row.

Not really. I mean, they certainly weren’t great in the third, but it was just a blah effort overall by them. Florida didn’t look impressive at all, just capitalized on the opportunities they were afforded and sat back and watched the Devils play sloppy hockey for the last 30 minutes.

by nyynygnjd on Feb 11, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

This. Game. Sucked.

The whole team looked sluggish. Kovy didnt look like he had his usual legs today, he seemed a bit off.

Then u take a sluggish group, shorten the bench because of the dead weight on the 4th line, and u get…..3 even more sluggish lines to play a weak 3rd.

by JTdevs on Feb 11, 2012 3:47 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Well guys, ill take credit for the loss this game. My first hockey game in person. However, I was bending down to my soda under my seat, and a puck went flying off the ice and smashed the aisle post right next to me. Lucky souvenir … I would have traded it for a win though.

by JerseyKid. on Feb 11, 2012 3:50 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Understandable that the Devils were a little sluggish. They have played a lot of hockey since the break. On top of that, they played a lot of fast paced, hard hitting hockey (against the Rangers, Flyers and Pitts). Still haven’t had much time off. They need a couple of days to gain their legs back.

Hopefully they come out flying against the Sabres. We owe them a beat down.

Let’s hope that’s all it was. Understandable to be fatigued after a stretch like that. This game felt like one long third period: start out strong, get worn down over time and make tired-body mistakes. Missing Larsson hasn’t helped since it means more ice for Foster.
