Schenn for Tedenby?
Just wanted to put it out there to get some feedback from others. I just think that from what I see is that the Devils rely pretty heavily on Volchenkov and Salvador as a shut down pairing and if one of them goes down, were toast.
Even when Tallinder gets back, he won't be in great shape to jump right in and contribute very effectively. To tell you the truth I don't think he's tough enough to begin with. But thats just what I think.
Taormina is pretty small and as we head down the stretch I think teams are gonna try to key in on him to create turnovers.
I know Schenn has had a bit of an off year but maybe the change would help. Same for Tedenby. Also the Devils seem to have too many left wingers anyway.
So anyway, just wanted to put it out there to see what other people think. So give me your thoughts and other trade talk?

Well considering Luke Schenn is a four year veteran Defensman on pace for a career year.
What else are you going to toss in with the AHL’er Tedenby?
Schenn is playing atrociously this year. I don’t think this is a fair deal, but it’s pretty close.
But I don’t see any need for Luke Schenn.

Admittedly I haven’t watched Toronto much. But is that atrocious based on expectations or just bad? 2-15 and +8 is pacing a career year.
For defensemen, a good guide if you’re not into advanced stats is ice time. Schenn’s ice time is WAY down, and that’s a pretty bad sign for a guy entering his fourth year on a team not exactly blessed with a ton of great defensemen.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
I did notice that. He is only playing about 16mins a night. That pretty much tells me the coaches don’t have the confidence in him.
I not high on advanced stats. I feel to many factors play into them. Sorta like +/-. If not more so in some cases. I’m not saying they are worthless stats or not relevant at all.
Just feel there is to much chance involved.
Even a traffic cone on the ice with 4 other good players can look good in corsi and fenwick. Just because you’re a +8 or something, doesn’t mean it’s YOU that’s pushing the play forward. Same as +/-, they’re team stats as much as they are individual; maybe more so.
Go Devils
Go Jets
That’s why you can compare with guys the dude is frequently taking the ice with. Like, Bieksa’s Corsi profile is better than Hamhuis, and they play together, so their success is likely more Bieksa than Hamhuis.

Scuttlebutt has it that Schenn could fetch James vanRiemsdyk straight up. Mattias Tedenby isn’t fit to carry JVR’s jock, let alone replace him in a trade.
It’s sad to say, but Mattias Tedenby can’t fetch the Devils anything wonderful right now, at least not as the headliner in a package. He could serve as filler in a larger deal, but his value isn’t particualrly high.
I think that scuttlebutt is mostly just Toronto folks’ wishful thinking. They’re close to equivalent players right now but JvR is on an upward trajectory while Schenn has stagnated.
And yeah, I get the sense that the Devils will give Tedenby another chance to prove himself next season but include him in a package deal a la Bergfors if he doesn’t entirely please the brass. It’s too bad, because I like a lot of what Tedenby does and I don’t think he’s the defensive liability he’s being portrayed as.
I don’t believe it is as much “wishful thinking” as you do. I think it’s a reflection of what each team is looking for and what each team has as surplus.
The Flyers have a glut of young forwards. The Flyers have an aging defensive corps that needs some reinforcements given Chris Pronger won’t be back this season (if ever). Toronto needs a Top 6 forward to help support Kessel & Company, while they do seemingly have a surplus of (young) defensemen.
I think a Schenn/JvR swap would be a case of each team dealing from a position at which they have greater depth to address their shortcomings. Those are the sorts of deals that make sense and often happen even if they don’t look equal “on paper” to the casual outside observer.
As I said, the change might do him some good. Leafs nation wants him out.
I think Schenn would address our needs. We could use another big shut down d-man especially if one of the other two get hurt. Taormina and Foster won’t cut it.
Your right that Tedenby wouldn’t be enough. I agree with you there. Mabe throw in a draft pick or something?
No way this trade happens. Few GMs would trade a proven commodity for a young player with potential. And no GM would do such a trade with a direct competitor.*

The Devils aren’t exactly rivals to the Leafs on the level of Ottawa or Boston. And with the NHL pretty intent on eventual conference realignment, even if it’s not this year, the Devils and Leafs couldn’t possibly meet until the 3rd round of the playoffs.
They’re not rivals, but they’re in competition for a playoff spot.

Lets hear some other trade opinions.
What about Hall Gill? What kind of a trade could be made for him?
Once Montreal decides to sell, Hal Gill is going to fetch a pretty good return between his experience, his skill-set, and the number of teams hunting for a D-man. I don’t think Tedenby would be enough to secure Gill…. some team will dangle a pretty good prospect or at least a 2nd-round pick for him.
In another “trade deadline targets” kind of thread, I made mention in the comments of the guy I’d like to see don a Devils’ uniform. Rather than regurgitate chapter and verse in this thread, you can just follow the link for the guy I want and why I think he would make sense. Not that he’d come cheap, but anyone who would be an upgrade for the Devils either in the Top 6 (forwards) or Top 4 (defensemen) isn’t going to be.
what, no. hal gill will not fetch that kind of price at all. he’s hal gill. he’ll be traded for a 2nd round pick, maybe a 2nd round pick with a body.
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
Just hope Hal Gill calls Montreal a bunch of losers, and we’ll get him for a tenth round pick.

Trade deadline is coming up. Lou is gonna make some kind of a move, he has to. If a defenceman isn’t what we need, then what?
I don’t think there’s a move out there that Lou “needs to make”. A top-tier defenseman is likely going to be out of the Devils’ price range in terms of what will be available on the market and what it would cost to acquire one — especially when compared to the teams that will be shopping for one to bolster their own rosters. A Top 6 forward is likely the same song in a different key.
If the Devils are fully healthy — and that’s a mighty big if — they’re probably set the way they are. Their defense won’t wow you, but they’re six deep with Foster and Taormina as your next two bodies up after that. Some additional scoring depth amongst the forwards would be nice to have, but I don’t know how much is really out there and what the price will be. Another pickup similar to Ponikarovsky (both in terms of ability and trade price) would be nice, but I don’t know what will be out there.
If Elias, Parise, Kovalchuk, Zubrus, and two of Sykora/Clarkson/Henrique/Zajac are your Top 6 plus two from that hodgepodge and Poni are your third line, you’re left with Josefson and Bernier and Carter as your 4th line. Sure, you’d like to have some better depth behind that — after all Mills, Boulton, Sestito, et al aren’t guys you really want to give much ice time to in the postseason — but how many guys out there are going to be a substantive upgrade over your Bottom Six and be available/affordable given all the other teams that will be looking for the same?
Here’s another one. It’s a little off topic. I got to thinking about this while I was watching the Panthers/Devils game. Because of the Goaltending situation next season, there might be a chance that Clemenson could end up back in New Jersey next year. He is a free agent and you know how Lou likes to bring back ex Devils.
Thought?
From Columbus
Radek Martinek would be a good rent (pending UFA), with a not that awful cap-hit (2.2M).
Though I would go after Fedor Tyutin since the Blue Jackets should be sellers this year. But I really don’t think they gonna make him available, it’s a consequential cap-hit with $ 2.8 Millions in 2012 then $4.5 millions until 2018. But overall, he’s a complete underrated hockey player (just playing for a bad team right now)
The asking price would be high, with something like Tedenby+Burlon+2012 third round in return just saying.

Martinek is out for the season (concussion). Find a new trade target.

I was never that impressed with Tyutin when he played for the Rangers. $4.5M would make him our highest paid defenseman – is he really worth that? I think Columbus threw extra money at him to entice him to stay.
Advanced statistics say he’s worth it or close at least. He’s doing more than ok against a tough competition, logs major minutes and has not been relying on luck lately. The guy would be our #1 Dman hands down.
I see 2 possible version of trade for the Devils and nothing more: A rent or making a splash for the long term.
Tyutin is typically the kind of guy I would go after for long term. A “young”, solid, complete and healthy player. Yes, I would include Greene in a trade for this kind of defenseman.

With hindsight pretty sure Tedenby+Burlon+2012 third round wouldn’t be enough for getting someone like Tyutin. apologies

I’d definitely spring for Hal Gill, but only for the right price. Same goes for Visnovsky and possibly Kubina.
See if they’d take a 2nd and one of our mid range defensive prospects like Burlon or Gelinas. Anything higher and they can walk away.
Hal Gill is playing 17 minutes a night. He’s not very good at even strength. The Devils already have a phenomenal penalty kill. Why are they interested in Hal Gill?
Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines
He’s a proven post-season performer, simple as that. And he’d certainly be a better option (in my mind) than the liability Foster is.
But he couldn’t QB the PP to save his life.
Hal Gill would be the opposite problem of Foster but we need someone to fix the whole thing… That’s why people here are talking about bringing a stud or bring nothing.

Proven post-season performer how? Relying on Halak to bust out a 96 Sv% against the Pens and Caps doesn’t strike me as proven other than not being all that good. Yeah, he’d be better than Foster, but that’s like replacing a skateboard with two weak trucks with a rusty bicycle.

I would be devastated to see Gelinas traded, he’s making a lot of progress this season in Albany.
