New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres - Gamethread #56
New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres, Feb 14, 2012 7:00 PM EST
The Time: 7:00 PM EDT
The Broadcast: TV - MSG+; Radio - 660 AM WFAN
The Game: The New Jersey Devils (31-20-4) at the Buffalo Sabres (24-25-6)
The Previews: My preview from way, way earlier this morning is right here. Please go check it out if you haven't. Die by the Blade will have a game-related post up closer to gametime.
A Song for Tonight: Hailing from Bridgewater, Shades Apart became part of the sea change in Revelation Records lineup in the mid-1990s, when the label focused more on alternative and post-hardcore music rather than, well, hardcore. They did pretty well, they got some major label notice later in the decade, and eventually signed to Universal. On their first release for Universal, Eyewitness, they even had an actual hit single. Appropriate for this day, that single is "Valentine."
Gameday Info: Stephane Veilleux isn't the only call up from Albany. Tom Gulitti reported this morning that Nick Palmieri arrived in Buffalo to skate with the team. However, Gulitti later reported that Palmieri will not play; Veilleux, Jacob Josefson, and Cam Janssen will act as the team's fourth line. So close, Peter DeBoer, yet so far. John Vogl of the Buffalo News reported that Lindy Ruff will be behind the bench tonight for the first time since his rib injury. That's good to see. Also: Vogl reported that Christian Ehrhoff is sick and Marc-Andre Gragnani will return to the lineup in his place. That's good for the Devils as Ehrhoff is an offensive threat and seemingly constant presence on the blueline. Lastly, Gulitti did confirm in this post that the starters tonight will be Martin Brodeur and Ryan Miller.
As usual, you can use the comments in this post to discuss today's game before, during, and after it happens until the recap is up. Please remember the rules at all times. Namely: keep your comments clean, keep them on topic, and keep them legal (read: nothing about illegal streams - no links, no discussion, no requests). Go Devils!

Can we make a separate Chico thread? Or at least one for his mustache and the crazy things it makes him say.

No, Chico comments can stay here. It’s not like talking about his hilarious quotes and his stache are incredibly off topic.

I was yelling at Elias for re-passing that. Well Done Patty . . . and Kovy. Miller had no idea either.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
That passing play was unbelievable, that’s how you score a goal!
And Kovalchuk speeds away, great moves, busting through, DID YOU SEE THAT?
It’s the kind of thing I’ve seen from the Bruins this year. Devs have a few in the past 2 wks, including Anton’sgoal. It’s a sense of confidence/ dominance.

First period over
A late PPG puts the Devils up in a period that wasn’t always kind to the visitors. Buffalo definitely has their skating legs, they actually do have Ehrhoff playing, and the Devils defense has been caught with turnovers and being beaten to pucks several times. Fortunately, Martin Brodeur is playing great, the Zubrus line is doing work, and Kovalchuk has 3 shots on net, 5 attempts, one goal post and, of course, a goal.
Shots are even at 8-8; Devils down in Corsi -1. I want to see the defensive effort be less of an adventure because the Sabres got a lot of point blank shots off loose pucks. Brodeur got them all so far, but the Devils need to stem that now before they get them in spots Brodeur can’t get to it.

Second period
More even than we may think. Devils only outshot by 1, 12-11; down in Corsi -3. Buffalo threatened and Brodeur did well against the Sabres. He can’t stop his teammates though, as Zubrus scored an own goal by accident to make it 1-1. Devils drew a good amount of power plays, now they got to take full advantage.
By the by, it would be awesome if Kovalchuk would stop hitting Sabres with his shots. He had 7 attempts at shooting and 6 of them were blocked. He is helping Parise out as Zach has 4 shots now.

Getting outplayed. But I’m biased by how tenacious the Sabres have looked in getting the puck forward, making up for their errors, and getting shots on net as opposed to shots at players.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
I’d seriously think about trading half the farm system for Nash. Columbus wouldn’t ever bite on that deal, but I’d love to have Rick Nash playing with the other guys here.
Me thinks more and more that Nash could not worth it… Just a thought… I’m going to behindthenet right now…

by Elektrostal_Kid on Feb 14, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions
I’m sure the advanced metrics grade Nash out horribly. But let’s be fair: he’s had less help in Columbus than Kovalchuk ever had in Atlanta.
He’s not having a great season indeed, but it’s a hell of a good player anyway… I’m more questioning his mindset lately….If you know what I mean.
"It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win"
by Elektrostal_Kid on Feb 14, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions
honestly, so would I.
Nash is a good player, and being who he is, if you pair him with the right players, you would have another elite player right there.
It would cost the likes of Urbom, Merill, Burlon, Josefson, (no to trading Henrique!) and a few picks plus others, but I think that it would be a tremendously good move on the offensive front. But that sets us way back on defense. I’m looking forward to having Urbom and Merill in a few years. The two of them and Larsson will be our anchors for years to come.
If i'm trading those assets, it's for a top-pairing D.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
It would mess up our cap for a few more years, as we will have to resign Zajac and eventually give others raises. Wedgewood will be relatively cheap for his first three years, so that helps things. But with 25MM in cap space, I think we would be able to work it out.
7.8 to Nash
~=7.0 to Parise
3.0 to Marty
3.0 to Fayne
1-2 to Tao
4-5 to Zajac in a year
That leaves us with some cap space to deal with.
If you brought Nash in, I’d consider using Zajac as trade bait with the idea that Elias and Henrique are my top two centers.
Who do you think Zach would prefer to play with? Zajac or Nash?
I would think Nash, but he definitely would want to play with Zajac no matter what. I don’t think that would happen.
Do you really think there’s much “Parise/Zajac” chemistry or magic left at this point? It isn’t like the two have shared the ice recently…. they barely played together last season and haven’t played together this year.
I agree with that, but still, loyalty. Zajac is certainly one of Zach’s best friends, he wouldn’t want him traded.
Plus he only has a year left on his deal, which means he could walk in a year without an extension. He is also damaged goods right now. Lou also is high on loyalty, is he not? I would think that Lou knows how great Zajac is when healthy, and is vaulable as a trade chip, but should be untouchable.
hold on… more coming.
I think that Lou really should offer Zajac a contract extension this year. Let him get healthy and play, then offer him a contract. It would help to keep Zach, plus we lock up a good center for a few more years.
However, that also could be an indication that he would use him as a trade chip, but that of course is bad business to sign a player and then turn around and trade them. I don’t think that would happen though.
Yes, Lou is high on loyalty. But Lou Lamoriello has never been timid — he’ll trade guys he’s had for a long time, even guys you’d think were “untouchable”. Think about Jason Arnott being shipped out less than two years after scoring a Cup-winning goal. Think about Petr Sykora being exiled a few months later. Bill Guerin and Johnny MacLean in the late 1990s.
This team has done very well this season without Zajac. I don’t know what the advanced metrics said for last year, but Zajac didn’t have a particularly wonderful year. I think this team would be fine without him in a scenario where you import Rick Nash.
As for an extension, Zajac cannot sign one until July 1st, if I recall my CBA correctly…. and it would be a poor idea to sign him to one not knowing what the next CBA will look like and without knowing if he’ll be anything close to the player he was before this injury. Not only can’t you re-sign Zajac before Parise hits the market, but I don’t know that it would be a sensible move for the Devils in any event.
With the number of teams that are always on the prowl for Top 6 forwards, I imagine you could create a pretty fair market for Travis Zajac in trade if you wanted to…. short of a medical setback that destroys his value.
Off topic, but Arnott and Sykora got traded because the A line stopped producing, and when they tried splitting the three of them up they constantly complained (in public) that they should be playing together. Lou’s got rules besides loyalty, and one is keep your mouth shut in public and another is do what your coach says.

If you offer me a stud like Nash for a bunch of maybes like the guys you named above, I’m taking Nash and letting you have the bag of magic beans. In any team sport, if you’re offered a dollar (Nash) for a fistful of nickels (prospects), you take the dollar every time…. especially a guy like Nash who is locked up long-term.
And couldn’t you imagine how much fun it might be if you had Kovy/Nash/Parise for years to come? I bet having another star in Newark would help convince Parise to stay.

This is how teams get destroyed. If you invest in scouting, the worst thing a team can do is trade their future potential for a single star player.

I’d like to see Nash on the Devils. But it’s going to be way too expensive. Howson’s in a bind and there’s no way he takes any low offer on Nash.

If you traded Clarkson + Greene and Merril for Nash you would freed more than $5 millions of cap space.

ESPN doesn't think that trade makes sense for Columbus.
Carter is a misunderstood, hard-working Canadian boy. Kovy is a lazy Russian.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
They gonna praise him like a bunch of mofos now… That already started since the Schenn’s spanking…..
And in a few years when we gonna grab our 2nd stanley cup., they’ll tell ya about Kovy… I TOLD YOU SO !!!

I believe their words were something to the effect of...
“Lou is probably hoping the new CBA includes an amnesty clause so they can dump that horrible contract.”

Devils PP% at a season high 17.01%
Has Adam Oates given up PP responsibilities? Gotta wonder.
Go Devils
Go Jets
Dave Barr took over. Probably explains everything.

I think you’re simply seeing things “regress to the mean”. With all the top-end talent the Devils throw out there (especially on the first unit), things were bound to improve.
Maybe its been mentioned.
4 point night for Kovalchuk.
