Division and Conference Points Distribution
I just did some quick calculations to determine the points distribution between the divisions and conferences.
As of 2/14/11 at 10:05 pm:
Atlantic Division: 339 points
Northeast Division: 307 points
Southeast Division: 291 points
Central Division: 326 points
Northwest Division: 303 points
Pacific Division: 308 points
Eastern Conference: 937 points
Western Conference: 937 points
Atlantic division is the best in the league by a decent margin. The Southeast sucks (duh). Eastern and Western conferences are dead even. Maybe realignment wouldn't be so bad for the Devils after all. Thoughts?

Well the Atlantic currently has 4 teams in playoff contention. 1 leads the conference and 3 are jockeying for 4th/5th/6th place. It’s not unusual to see NJD/ PHI/ PIT in contention like that but the wild card is NYR pulling so much weight.
The Atlantic might not be the “best” division but it has the strongest overall this year. Imagine a Conference semifinal with NJD vs. PIT and PHI vs. NYR? Holy crap.
In terms of playoff berths/ standings, alignment could help the Devils and the Atlantic and disadvantage the Southeast at present. Still, I’m not convinced it’s the right approach long-term. Hockey is fickle and if the Devs ended up in a limp division, then we’d be whining about the inequity of it. The re-alignment has bigger problems/ risks than that, though.
The Central is also strong this year. But I think the proposed realignment would be a bad idea for the Eastern teams in general. There are too many teams that have shown a propensity to spend up to and even beyond (when accounting for minor league demotions and creative accounting) the cap – the Rangers, Flyers, Penguins, Devils, Bruins, Leafs, Canadiens, Caps, and now even Buffalo. Limiting each division to 4 playoff teams each would create inequality a la what we have in baseball. Teams like the Isles, Canes, Panthers wouldn’t quite be as bad as the Orioles, but they’d be lucky to make the playoffs three times a decade (granted, the Panthers actually have not been to the postseason in a decade, but their division has tried to help them out as much as possible). And under the wrong ownership situation or an extended playoff drought the Devils could well end up in that situation.
In contrast, the West has maybe three teams that would consistently spend up to the cap (Detroit, Chicago, Vancouver), two teams that have only spent as much as they have due to the strength of the Canadian dollar (Calgary, Edmonton), and another couple of teams who really need to win to maintain a fan base (San Jose, LA). St Louis, Dallas, and Colorado are wild cards in the West – they’ve shown a tendency to spend a lot when in contention, but also don’t balk at the idea of spending a few years rebuilding.

What kind of realingment would you propose?
Something like the structure that was proposed earlier in the season in which we have four conferences and no more divisions? Or would you shuffle the divisions around with possible expansion/relocation?
