Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

What about this Defenseman ?

We were talking about several Defensemen out there, it seems that we missed this one: Mark Streit

A real Powerplay specialist with a tremendous shot and a quite decent defenseman as well. A bit aging (34) combined

with a respectable cap-hit ($4.1M). Signed until the end of the next season.

Still he would cost us less in return than a Visnovsky.

Islanders and Devils are trading partners moreover... It would be interesting to see what will happen if the Islanders are going to sell at the deadline.

What are you thoughts about Mark Streit ? would he fit in the Devils system ? who would you to trade for him ?

i’m under the impression that, since he’s got the “C” on the island, they’re going to try to build a defense around him so he can mentor guys like DeHaan, while building up frount around tavares. of course johnny T would get the C if streit did move anywhere, but on some teams even if they don’t make the playoffs it’s good to have a veteran presence around or two to guide into the future.

that being said, i think that’d be an awesome guy to have even if his +/- is terrible, it’s probably not indicative of his defensive play. might be tough with his hit for next year, it’d be like we make a run with him and then try to unload him after the playoffs to make him a rental and minimize salary taken on. then we’d have to recoup some of the losses by trading him right after the playoffs so another team has him even before training camp and with a full year left on his contract.

but yeah, i’d love to get him, i think it’d help a lot he’d be a great fit.

+/- ratings are terrible and completely overrated statistics indeed. It’s true that he’s getting a lot of offensive zone starts, but that does not necessarily mean he’s protected or a defensive liability but more that he’s just a good offensive defenseman,

yeah, that’s pretty much what i meant. not like the islanders are tearing it up either.

Although I have to say I was really impressed when he was a combined +6 from 2008-2010, on the Islanders, which as a team had a really bad goal differential.

Pass.

Maybe a few years ago, but he’s slipping and on the wrong side of 30.

by elesias on Feb 15, 2012 7:56 AM EST reply actions

I don’t get your comment, how is he slipping on the wrong side when his advanced stats show he’s still doing fine ? He could easily play this way for 2 or 3 good seasons again, he’s defenseman. Too, he would be there only for one season and a half or could even be traded during the off-season.

If you find an offensive defenseman, with a decent all-round game under 30 without selling the whole farm, I would take it for sure but that won’t happen in my opinion.

And hearing about the Zidlicky trade rumors, Streit looks like an All-Star compared to Marek.

He’s still doing fine, but he’s not doing as fine as he was a few years ago, thus, he’s slipping.

Pointing out his age is to possibly help explain the slippage as well as a reminder that he’s not a young buck with time to get better but rather an older player likely to only get worse and more injury prone—remember, he missed all of last year with a shoulder injury.

I coveted him a few years ago, but he’s not the same player any more and not really worth $4.1m.

by elesias on Feb 15, 2012 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

And yet he still costs the same as Zidlicky, who looks to be headed here any minute now. For my $4M, I’d take Streit every day of the week and twice on sunday to get me a beer while the Mrs is in church.

and it looks like any defenseman with a tiny bit of an offensive upside is reaching the $ 4millions cap-hit at minimum. Look at Doughty, that’s craziness.

If Streit is overpaid it’s because they (offensive dmen) all are.

I probably would too, but if those are the two options I’d opt for door number 3 and acquire neither.

by elesias on Feb 15, 2012 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

agreed. The part that worries me the most is that maybe we haven’t gotten the truth about Hank or Adam and their expected returns.

Sorry but saying you wouldn’t take Streit to play over Fosters or Taormina is stunning. Streit would be on the Devils top pair if he was there. His advanced statistics are not only consistent, but they’re pretty good too.

Anyway it’s your opinion, gotta respect it.

Sorry but saying you wouldn’t take Streit to play over Fosters or Taormina is stunning.

I didn’t say that, I said that I didn’t want him. Larsson should be back soon enough and that’ll send Taormina packing and Foster is, while not ideal, much cheaper, a bit younger, not signed beyond this year and, anecdotally at least, seems to have helped the power play.

Streit would be on the Devils top pair if he was there.

Perhaps, but I expect he’d be on the second pairing and on the second PP unit.

His advanced statistics are not only consistent, but they’re pretty good too.

I’ll give you consistent, though a case could be made contrarily depending on the stat, and they are pretty good, but they’re in an understandable decline.

His TOI/60 has been steadily increasing, and his CorsiRel has been all over the place, though mostly good. It’s up again this year, but notice he’s playing against negative QoC for the first time in his career and getting more offensive zone starts.

OnIceSh% has declined every year since 2008, and the OnIceSv% is currently the worst it’s been during the regular season as far back as BtN goes.

He’s also on pace to score 7 goals, the fewest since his rookie year, and 38 assists, which is more than acceptable, but matches his total two years ago and falls short of his two peak years of 49 and 40. He’s also on pace to score 3 PP goals, which would be his 3rd worst career total.

His shots are down (on pace for 144) as is his shooting percentage.

So yeah, he may be an upgrade over Foster, but I don’t know that they’re necessarily comparable players in terms of expected role. With the apparent decline, his injury last season, the contract term and cost and what it might take to pry the Islanders Captain from them… I’d pass unless he fell into our laps.

by elesias on Feb 15, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

I get it, he’s starting to show his age but to make a fair comparison we’ve got to compare his current numbers with our defensive line-up. He would be our most complete defenseman easily. Reliable and way above any other dman offensively hands down (we suck so much there).
He"s an upgrade over Foster on PP not only but he would take Greene’s position at evens too in my opinion.

I won’t discuss the cost and contract terms seeing that the offensive defensemen are all overpaid as well.

Ps: Yes he was severely injured last year, but he’s nowhere near an injury prone.

wow he's 34?

I would have thought he was a lot younger. I guess this being only his 6th NHL season would contribute to that.

But regardless. He’s gotten over half of his career +/- this year, in a season where the Isles are improved over recent seasons. No thanks.

Would be too expensive. Streit is a good player but if he wanted to leave the Island, he would’ve done it when he was UFA a couple years ago. So in conclusion, keep dreaming.

by popp on Feb 16, 2012 1:10 AM EST reply actions

Um, Streit went to the Island when he was a UFA a few seasons ago (from Colorado). The groupthink at the time was that the Islanders got him because they were willing to pay more money (both years and per-season) than anyone else.

by acasser on Feb 16, 2012 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

He never played for Colorado. What’s your point anyway? That he wants to leave NYI and the Islanders want to trade away their captain?

by popp on Feb 16, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Streit played three seasons for Montreal before going to the Isles. Like popp says, never for Colorado.

Yup.
