Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Are the Devils a serious contender for the Cup this season?

I know the standings in the East change on a nightly basis, especially between the Flyers, Pens, and Devils but with the win in Montreal we're 4th in the conference and tied for second in point overall in the conference. We're also 6th overall in points in the NHL. Those are some pretty high spots to be in. I know we have over a month of hockey left to play but what do you guys think?

I was pretty confident to start the season that they’d be a bubble team but ultimately make the playoffs, and my feelings haven’t much changed since then.

They’re currently playing and seeded better than I expected them to, but there’s time yet. Their remaining schedule isn’t exactly easy—3 vs. Rags, 1 vs. Boston, 2 vs. Philly, 2 vs. Pittsburgh, 2 vs. Ottawa, 2 vs. Toronto, 1 vs. Washington, 2 vs. TBL, 4 vs. NYI (which, due to a quirk of the schedule, NJ plays them three times in 6 days. They’re consecutive for the Isles, but part of a 4 game set for NJ with a Rags game squeezed between the 1st and 3rd), 1 vs. Carolina and 4 against the West which includes Colorado, Vancouver, Chicago and, oh yeah, at Detroit where apparently no one else is allowed to win.

As good as it feels that they’re in 4th now, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they slipped back a few spots by game 82.

To answer the original question though, no, I don’t feel they’re contenders. Anything could happen and if Marty keeps playing like he has been then that could go a long way toward proving me wrong, but by my estimate they’d do very well just to make it to the second round.

I second this opinion.

No disagreement there, though again it depends on the matchups. If the first round is Ottawa and the second round is Florida (not exactly sure how that re-seeding would happen, but hypothethically), then I’d extend the hopes a bit further to a conference berth.

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

4/5 = Devils/Ottawa
3 = Florida
One of 7 or 8 wins their first round matchup against 1/2.

Therefore, 1/2 plays 7/8 and 4/5 Devils play #3 Florida.

by Marty 4 Prez on Feb 20, 2012 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Well, there ya go.

Assuming the top NJD could get is 4th, that’s actually possible b/c Ottawa is in the mix. The problem is that they’ve played a few more than NJD-PHI-PIT so they’d need to go on a run.

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Of course not. Still problems that need to be addressed(injuries, lack of a legit PMD, inconsistent offense/goaltending).

by Marv95 on Feb 20, 2012 1:56 PM EST reply actions

It mostly depends on the goaltending. If the Devils can get .915 goaltending, then sure. If Brodeur plays like he did in the first 3 months of the season, forget it.

I would say goaltending and a solid bottom 6 is what pushed this team from average to below average into top 10 status.

by dkball7 on Feb 20, 2012 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Right. Then if you can count on getting Tallinder and Zajac back and maybe staving off the injury bug to major players, all the sudden you’ve got a pretty deep team. But it’s not likely to be able to overcome .900 goaltending like a top offense would.

Driving Play - The Blog with Three First Lines

by Triumph44 on Feb 20, 2012 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair about the goaltending, it does seem as though this years’ Devils are a “high event” team (low shots for/against, high shooting percentage, low save percentage). I’ll take a .900 sv% if it comes with a team shooting around 10%.

by dkball7 on Feb 20, 2012 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve always considered high event teams to be high shots for/against. I don’t see any reason to assume the Devils would have a good shooting percentage besides Kovalchuk, who hasn’t been his Atlanta self shooting-wise in NJ at all, or perhaps all the scoring chances on the PK. Likewise, the only thing that should suppress NJ’s save percentage is, perhaps, save percentage while on the PP.

I’d call them the ‘Dark Horse’ team in the East.

Rangers & Bruins have to considered the favorites. After that who has a better chance in the East then the Devils? I say they are right there with anyone in the East.

If they keep playing well, I think they’ll surprise many people in the playoffs….

"Don't mess with the Devil buddy, were number one, we beat anybody! WE'RE THE DEVILS! THE DEVILS!"

by andy6637 on Feb 20, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe.

But not until they get their defense stabilized.

Tallinder & Larsson. Once their bodies recover. Let’s hope the break has sharpened their minds. The Devils haven’t suffered while they were gone, so that’s good. Foster, Taormina, & Harrold. Young guys who’ll get more shifts until T & L return. We’ll need more than one of them to be on-point for the playoffs.

D-man trades. It doesn’t look like Marek Zidlicky is a factor anymore. Still, I’m anxious to see what Lou will do in the next week. If not Zidlicky or someone like him, maybe another big dude? I’d be content with that.

Second issue: to win the Cup you need 82 regular season games + 16 to 28 playoff games. That’s 98-110 total. Can Brodeur-Hedberg handle that, especially since Marty has been carrying most of the load lately?

I will say this:

So these are the kinds of posts people make when the team gets on a hot streak?

Sure it’s been a fun past 15 games but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If the devils make the second round I’d say anything can happen, but I still think if they made the second round this year that’d be a nice achievement for them.

Marty’s going to have to play great and i’m still not sold on his “turn back the clock” type of two weeks he’s been having.

So I went on my friends computer who’s clearly a Rangers fan and goes on Blueshirt Banter a lot. I thought I signed him out and went onto my account but I guess not. What a fail on my part lol. It said I was signed in, but oh well I guess it’s not working.

See the message in your error. It was not a failure to improperly sign out of your friend the Rangers fan’s account. It was your error in befriending a Rangers fan in the first place.

I have plenty of friends that are Rangers fans

Their pretty good about the whole thing and while we clash on some subjects their knowledgeable hockey fans for sure, and don’t say the Devils won 3 cups because of “Fatso” or the trap.

by Mr. Boom on Feb 20, 2012 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a plausible explanation. Here’s another: you’re a Rangers fan with two accounts: one for BB and one for ILWT. You use the second to spread disinformation and rancor.

I’ve see it all before…

nah but seriously I was house and wanted to post here. He tried to tell me that this site is filled with communist propaganda and posting here would get his computer flagged by the FBI. I told him the Devils had 3 since 94’. He shut up and let me post.

oh man, the cold war has been over for 20 years. i guess it makes sense though… the Devils are the red menace

I think you are confusing our team with the Detroit Red Wings circa the 1990’s.

I thought that stuck tothe lineup with all the Russians they had. Now they have Datsyuk and maybe 1 other eastern European (or Czech, not Russ?) and a gaggle of Swedes.

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 8:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

So… it’s been reassigned. NJD has the scary Russians now

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 8:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don’t think any of us are getting ahead of ourselves. While we’re all very happy about the team’s performance, we understand that they may be overachieving and could come back to earth. Personally, I think we’re two years away. We have a lot of kids on the blue line that need time to develop and we need to sort out what our goaltending situation will be for the future.

On the other hand, maybe the team is better than we’ve given them credit for.

by HouseRich on Feb 20, 2012 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with your point, I just want to see what other people think. In my opinion I think we’re playing well but not quite there yet.

this season or next...

stanley cup champions. guaranteed. i’ve been saying it since preseason. don’t know which year, but we are set up roster-wise for 2 shots at #4 for marty(he will re-sign for at least 1 more year).

without a single move, fully healthy(larsson, tallinder, zajac), we can ice forward lines such as: parise-henrique-kovy, elias-zajac-sykora, ponikarovsky-zubrus-clarkson, bernier-josefson-palmieri. just for example. firepower-yes.

defensively: salvador-volchenkov, tallinder-fayne, larsson-taormina. ok, greene. no foster, though. defense/talent-yes.

in net: shame on you doubters, marty will get another one if it kills him. hedberg is an excellent backup. best tandem in the league, and battle-tested. look at philly.

you may start celebrating now, but it may be 1 year early(early’s ok!). we may need another season for this center situation to settle in nicely(zajac-henrique-josefson-carter?), and wingers can become wingers again. this defense for the playoffs will be excellent, if healthy. might need to add 1 here. that’s all, folks…

taste my blintzkrieg!

the 3-man rush is an admission of lunacy, cowardice, and defeat.

by davecheffy on Feb 20, 2012 6:15 PM EST reply actions

i wish i had your enthusiasm. i think it’s possible, but the Parise situation sometimes makes me nervous.

WHEN (not if) he re-signs, it’s a clear statement that he thinks his best chance to win in is nj. it’ll be a sign to kovy, elias, and everyone else that he’s here for the long haul. i think that would push them into overdrive next year.

IF he doesn’t re-sign, then it will be a dark day in new jersey.

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

I'm going to agree.

I’m not going to go as far as guarantee. But healthy, with Marty in top form. Yes they have as good a chance as any of the top teams.

The way I see it. Kovalchuk is good enough to win/steal one round and you can say the same for a top form Marty. From there they are deep enough to give them a real good shot.

by NJDOhio on Feb 20, 2012 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I like your enthusiasm – and while I won’t guarantee a cup as you have, I do think that if this team is healthy we can certainly make a run deep (only teams I think can beat us in the east are boston and Rags).

Only think I’d disagree with on your post is Greene. Really? You’re not sure if he’s top 6? He’s 1 or 2 for us right now.

by RoBo_Cop on Feb 20, 2012 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Who’s the best pairing for Greene? He’s only been back for about 10 games now, right? I think he’s been pairing with Fayne, but maybe Greene-Tao and Fayne-Larsson would work also?

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 9:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Hm, maybe not. Just checked and that puts twp L-handed and two R-handed together.

by Alan Wright on Feb 20, 2012 9:12 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Best tandem? You seem to forget Tim Thomas is backed up by Tukka Rask.

I am looking for a deep play off run either this year or next but no cup and you know what…I am ok with that. I am sure Marty is going to resign for another year but it is going to have to be a very cheap contract. We need the cap room to re-sign Parise and some others.

by dandello9 on Feb 21, 2012 2:14 AM EST up reply actions

Best goalie tandem is LA or Boston…
But I too think the Devils have potential for a deep run.

The only two teams that worry me a little are the Rags and Boston. But anything can happen vs the Rags considering its a huge rivalry (and we might not see them until later in the playoffs) and Beantown hasn’t been all that impressive as of late.

Agreed with Alan that it’s match-ups. Ottawa would be ideal. Pittsburgh I’d take second. If we draw Philly, I actually think we can beat the Flyers as they’re playing now, but think it will be exhausting enough to leave us toast for the 2nd Round.

As for Florida, I’m still not sold that DeBoer can vex his Panther demons.

The Panthers have been tough on the Devils. All team has to do is cover the Veersteeg line and they don’t do that well at it. At all.

Versteeg 5 G 1A
Weiss 1 G 4A
Fleischimann 1 G 1 A

Should be easy to coach against, but may this emphasizes that a shadow type of player could be a cheap rental come deadline time.

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

by Cherno77 on Feb 20, 2012 9:37 PM EST reply actions

Not favorites, but definitely

…a dark horse team. It really comes down to goaltending. If Marty can keep his play up close to a .910-.920, then we can definitely get a round or two. The defense isn’t nearly as bad as some make it out to be, but one more solid member would solidify the top 6 and allow Foster/Tao to be played as a 7th D/4th liner/PP specialist, which would be great. The forwards are pretty much set once everyone comes back, but I would love to pick up a big body who could play the pk and give us 10 competent mins a night.

Our lineup, as currently constructed, looks like this when healthy (PLEASE disregard lines, this is just to get the names out);

Parise-Henrique-Kovy
Sykora-Elias-Clarky
Poni-Zajac-Zubrus (he can play all 3 forward positions)
Carter-JJ-Bernier
Ex; Bolton/Janssen

Salvador-Android
Fayne-Tallinder
Greene-Larsson
Foster/Tao

Not that bad. Personally, just a decent to good defenseman that can make a good pass (not even put up points), who’s big, and who could give us 15 mins a night along with maybe a veteran 3rd, 4th liner and we could surprise some people.

by skly27 on Feb 21, 2012 12:32 AM EST reply actions

Definitely a dark horse team this year and I do think we win our first round matchup. If Parise signs long term and we build up the defense, then I think we could be solid contenders soon enough…

by Goalvalchuk on Feb 21, 2012 8:36 PM EST reply actions

we have the horses

parise, kovy, elias-can’t beat that trio. we will re-sign parise to keep it together until elias skates off in the sunset. on andy greene, i don’t like him. not a lick. i should make a post of it, but opinions differ. i will take our goaltenders over any in the league-add up the playoff success and cups. consistent, proven, and ready NOW.

the rangers, whoever? if you’re worried about the opposing goaltender, we can score on anyone, anyway. best forward group in a long time, and deep. where exactly are the major holes in this team? oh, and we’re a little motivated after: missing the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, the kovy bs from the league, and the media perception that this team(and marty) are done. ridiculous, i say

taste my blintzkrieg!

Once in the playoffs, anything can happen

However in order to make a deep run they have to be more consistent
