During today's game against the Canucks, it was announced that we have acquired veteran offensive-defenseman Marek Zidlicky, whose contract extends to the end of next season.
Although I am excited about his start, and how he will affect us for the rest postseason, it got me thinking about our defense for next year.
Personally, I don't think we should re-sign Salvador. He's been fantastic, but next year could be the perfect time to start showcasing our future defensive talent.
Our defense will consist of:
Veterans:
Zidlicky, Volchenkov, Greene and Tallinder
Youngsters, Rookies and Prospects:
Larsson, Merrill, Urbom, Taormina
Include Fayne (so long as he is re-signed)
I think this looks like a great group of vets and youngsters, potentially the best defensive core since the days of Dano/Nieds/Stevens/Rafalski. It would take a long time to even compare our budding prospects to such NHL greats, but considering that our defense has been lackluster the past few seasons (although good, it hasn't built up to the Devils reputation) we could be watching the start-up of a new great defensive core. Add Parise to the front with a fresh long-term contract, and with our offense solidified, next season could be very promising—so long as we can fill the whole in net if Brody retires.
I figured I'd post this simply out of excitement for our teams future. I've been waiting several years to see a strong defensive core like the days of old.
